Also compliment the young man who cleaned and set up tables AND made sure we had a full glass of water. He said it was his third day on job and he did a wonderful job for being "new". The water has an earthy, funky flavor that is somewhat concerning. Nobody got ill. But I consider offering people gross water a little inhospitable. I believe it effected some of the flavors of foods that were boiled in it, too. Gnocchi had some of the same off flavor. In addition, some of the flavors just feel way out of whack for totally unrelated reasons. Sauce that the duck came in was thin and overwhelmed by honey. The risotto it was served with seems like it should be rich and homey. But despite a crazy amount of added dairy still tasted thin and flat. Can't tell you why. Wonky seasoning? None of the dishes reflected any familiarity with acid to lighten or balance a dish. Fried green tomatoes were pretty mid despite a quality remoulade and a bunch of pimento cheese. Ingredients seem like they're decent quality. Desserts are legitimately top notch. Everyone recommends the peanut butter pie. And it is excellent, though pretty obviously not long out of the freezer. The affogato Is legitimately fantastic. And I'm not even talking about the pageantry of dumping the espresso on the salt ice cream. Oh boy - if I've said it once I've said it a million times: fine dining isn't about the food, it's the service. Acre is slow, and the staff isn't terribly knowledgeable because they're college kids. I get that it's "farm to table" but I don't think that means driving out to the farm and slaughtering the animal after an order is placed. Anyway, the food is unimpressive. And despite the accolades of the head chef, I question his choices. Raw oysters don't need huge grains of kosher salt on top (they're already seasoned by the saltwater they're harvested in.) A fried green tomato with remoulade is good, but cold pimento cheese underneath adds nothing. Dry, mealy brisket on a burnt tostada desperately cries out for a squeeze of lime. This is just a recurring theme I've noticed with Auburn restaurants generally. A friendly staff member and a waiter who cheerfully took our drink order escorted us to our seats. The menu was appealing, and we placed the order, which took some time to arrive. As we waited for our plates, we enjoyed the conversation and observed the other patrons' orders being served while we enjoyed a wonderful salad. We had finished our salad and a second glass of wine before our plates arrived. It was a generous and delicious portion. Quite full, we skipped dessert. This was a super nice surprise. We were so frustrated that we couldn't get a reservation on the only night we were in town but decided to try walk in. And we were lucky to find four seats at the bar. Such a swanky farmhouse like feel. drinks were expensive but tasty. They forgot our oyster order so provided complimentary pimento cheese to tide us over. My hubby got the duck breast and my son got shrimp rigatoni. My daughter got a Caesar salad and I had the sweet potato from their shared community garden. All was good tasting food, even if maybe a little too rich and fancy for a college town experience. Recommended for special occasions. I stopped in for lunch recently, and let me tell you--it was the kind of meal that had me thinking, "Why don't I eat here more often?" We started light with the Murder Point oysters, and they were everything you want oysters to be: cold, briny, and fresh enough to taste the Gulf in every bite. The fresh horseradish on top gave it that perfect sinus-tingling kick. Then came the fried okra basket, which was honestly dangerous--golden, crunchy, and bite-sized addictive. If I had a bottomless basket of those, I'd be in real trouble. For the mains, the fried green tomatoes were a solid southern classic done right--crispy edges, juicy tang in the middle. But the star, no contest, was the duck flautas. Holy smokes. The duck was rich and melt-in-your-mouth good, and the crema balanced it out like it was made to be there. One of those dishes where you're low-key sad when the last bite is gone. Dessert sealed the deal: a peanut butter pie that I'm still thinking about. Creamy, nutty, just sweet enough--I could've happily taken one to go and eaten it in the parking lot. Service was spot-on too--our waitress was friendly, easygoing, and kept the lunch vibe relaxed. Very disappointed with our dining experience on my wife's65th birthday celebration! After being seated at our designated reservation time, we waited 25- minutes for the wine and then 45- minutes for the entrees which were both cold. We returned them only to wait an additional 35-minutes to get the second entrees... which were actually our first meals only slightly warmer and dry. It's difficult to reheat fish a second time! A positive result, management reduced our bill taking meals off ! A class act! We gladly paid for the wine and salads! Acre is beautiful inside and out. From the valet, to the hostess, to the server, everyone at Acre was welcoming, friendly, and helpful. We decided on a variety of starters to share as our meal, followed by dessert. We tried the "gas station" boudin balls, lacquered cornbread, fried blue crab claws, and fried green tomatoes (the star of the meal!). The fried green tomatoes are topped with fresh lump blue crab and plated on dollops of delicious homemade pimento cheese. The breading on the fried blue crab claws was heavy and mealy, which made them our least favorite. They would be amazing sautéed instead. Good, but I was still a bit underwhelmed. I had high hopes for this place, given that I had been driving by it since it opened up when I was in college, but never got a chance to try it. I ordered the boudin balls, summer chicken orecchiette, and fried ocre. The boudin balls were the best part of the meal. They were filled with beef brisket from what I could tell, and the spicy mustard and pickles were excellent complements. The orecchiette was great - creamy, soft, and well-garnished. I also really enjoyed the ancho chili-honey sauce - that was a unique combination of sweet and spicy. The okra was good, nothing to rave about though. The reason I was underwhelmed was because the chicken was underwhelming. As the center piece of the entree and meal, I expected it to be the best part, but it took a back seat to the sauce and pasta. It just seemed too plain to be paired with such a creative sauce and fine pasta. I would recommend a braised half chicken or roasted cornish hen - something that stands out. First of all, I what a really cool vibe you get at this restaurant. The place just looks awesome. I ate at the bar because I was traveling by myself and had really great service. For my appetizer I ordered the "Gas Station" Boudin Balls. They come with a mustard based sauce and house made bread and butter pickles. Don't think your normal Louisiana type boudin balls. Those have been kicked up in a huge way, and they were fresh and hot. If you have ever read my reviews, hit food should be hot. There were fresh out of the fryer. And so good, and you get 5 with an order. I had to get three of them to go. Then the Smoked Brisket with Over Easy Eggs, Brabant potatoes and toast (the brunch menu is available, at least on Friday). This is a tricky combination. You have three things that are hard to get right. Brisket needs to be tender with a really good bark and a sauce that does not overpower it. Next the fried eggs. It is tough to get over medium right. Most people don't cook them enough, and many go too far. These were just right. The potatoes were on point, crunchy on the outside and creamy on the inside.. This wasn't our first time to visit Acre, as it's become an automatic stop whenever we visit Auburn. Anna Grace was a phenomenal waitress, super happy to be doing her job and had a smile the whole time-- all while taking care of multiple tables spread out throughout the restaurant. She was also training a new waitress, so she was really hustling. My husband had the ribeye. This was hands down the winner for the night with amazing flavor that I never thought we'd like on a steak! I had the diver scallops. They were cooked perfectly and had an amazing broth poured over them table side. We also tried the carrot cake for dessert. I didn't realize when we ordered it that it's also gluten free. Neither of us are gluten free, but it says a lot about the pastry chef to be able to create something that's friendly for food sensitivities and you don't think something is missing when you taste it. We were in town for bid day and excited to try Acre, as it was the first time we have been able to get a reservation. This is my first ever review on yelp. I travel 30 weeks a year. Maybe the ambience, bar, drinks, all gave us false hopes. Being seated with a reservation, the fried okra app was by far the best dish of the night. My wife got the Whole Pompano, it was decent but the sides left much to be desired. I got the Redfish, it was a generous size piece of fish, but the seasoning on top was horrendous. It was like they dumped a whole bottle of blackened seasoning on top. The crispy potatoes came out luke warm, like they had been sitting under a heating lamp for 2 hours.
