Yay! What a fabulous find. Got a resy during move in and was exactly what we needed to relax and unwind. Packed but felt fun and alive versus loud and cramped. Drinks were fabulous (try the Peach Mule) and we crushed the bacon flight (fought over who could get the last maple bite). Then we had shrimp and grits, bison burger and a Caesar. All were flavorful and some of the best we've ever had. Our server was training tonight but his apprentice was just as knowledgeable and attentive - in fact he helped us with drink selection and ensured we had bottles of water flowing since we were so dehydrated from the day. The wings were wayyy too big and felt undercooked, and the bacon flight was unremarkable. The entrees were also okay. The best was the shrimp and grits which I would return on this dish only. Evrything was just too too salty. My palate was ruined after a while. The rest were just okay, but I did like the greens. Standout was that bread pudding. If you're looking for a place that feels like a high-end hunting lodge married a modern restaurant and raised a family of delicious food and strong drinks, The Hound is your spot. I started off with the Moon Over Madagascar, and let me tell you--if this drink had a fan club, I'd be president. The black tea and vanilla combo sounded like a weird dare at first, but it ended up being shockingly amazing. Whoever came up with that mix deserves a bonus and maybe a parade. Now, let's talk about the shrimp and grits, because these were not just "good." These were "call your mama and tell her you've tasted greatness" good. The chef is from South Carolina, and you can taste every bit of Lowcountry pride in that bowl. Perfectly cooked grits? Check. Pile of blackened shrimp? Double check. A sauce that made me rethink my entire life? Oh yeah. If they sold that sauce by the gallon, I'd be bankrupt but extremely happy. Erica, our waitress, was an absolute rockstar. Very good food and cool atmosphere. Their specialties are bourbon and bacon so I recommend the bacon flight and a bourbon drink on their cocktail menu. My wife wanted the pepper jelly app, which was a good balance of spicy with the jalapeño and sweet of the jelly. I really want the bacon flight next time so will likely not get this again but it was good. Then I had the Big Nasty which is a fried hot chicken sandwich with fried egg and aioli. We started with the Flight of Bacon and the fried quail served over a Johnny cake with pineapple chutney, both were outstanding. For our entrées, we tried the meatloaf and the shrimp and grits, and they were equally impressive. We ordered the bread pudding for our desert and it was out of this world!! This was the cutest spot ever. I visited on a Sunday after 1 pm and there was as 15-20 minute wait. While I waited, I visited the bar to have an orange-pineapple mimosa which was delicious. The wait wasn't long at all so they exceeded my expectation. The environment was not loud or crowded. It was just right! Cindy was the waitress and she was such a pleasure. She provided information on what "Bacon and Bourbon" meant, recommendations on popular meals and suggested nearby sports bars to watch a little NFL since I was in the mood for that. However, there are televisions there at the bar. I order med the Farmer's Omelette without potatoes with a side of cheese grits and bacon which was made in-house. The omelette was HUGE!!! I had tons of leftovers. I look forward to visiting this establishment again in the near future as it was a quick trip from Columbus, GA. So I'm very particular about a mushroom and Swiss burger. I have my favorite place back home in White Bear Lake, MN and any other mushroom and Swiss burger usually lets me down. So, with some trepidation, I ordered the mushroom and Swiss bison burger at The Hound. I was not disappointed. I ordered "some pink" and they got the cook on it perfect. It was delicious as were the fries. I ordered a local pils and it was a great pairing. Sat at the bar and service was attentive. Ambiance was on point. This was a great meal. It's been about 10 years since I've been, so I was glad to see that this place is still alive and well. I ordered the Berkshire porkchop. It was a massive cut of porkchop served over bacon fried rice. The porkchop had an Asian style marinade with sesame seeds on it. The marinade and cut of porkchop was primetime on point. However, it came out pretty much well done. Still a fantastic cut of marinated meat, but the medium finish would have made it more juicy and flavorful. The bacon fried rice with pepper jelly-sweet chile sauce was an excellent combination of savory and sweet. It had a smidge too much soy sauce (saltiness) to me, but otherwise, I really enjoyed it. Great food, would have rated higher if service were better. One in our party uses a wheelchair and this venue is very tough. Old-style "lift" tucked behind the server stand and behind a curtain makes for a very non wheelchair-friendly experience to navigate the stairs-only path between spaces. We were made to move tables no less than 3 times which was not an easy task with a wheelchair. No servers approached us for us to order food/drinks. We ultimately ended up on the patio which was fine. We enjoyed the shrimp and grits and the bacon flight. read more

We feel today's flavor selection didn't pair extremely well with the bacon and was lacking in texture (floppy rather than crispy). My partner had the country fried steak and I had the chicken. The fried layer of the steak was rather impressive. The amount of flavor it contained was quite nice, but the short rib was about 2 inches thick and didn't complement the flaky outside. The chicken was tasty, but the macncheese lacked character. Cheesy, but needed both salt and pepper to taste. Both entrees were $32, and I think they were both worth $20 at most. I would try this restaurant again once a new menu came out, as I think today's selection was rather bland. Would've given 2 stars but service was top notch! read more

After 2 years of trying to get a reservation in time for our trip down there, we finally got in. Just remember to start a week out or sometimes a month out on football game weekends. Started out with sourdough and pepper jam spread. Drink choices and atmosphere were good even though you are right on top of your neighbor sometimes. The food was excellent. I had the port chop that was pictured. My wife had the meatloaf and son had the Brisket. We all loved what we got and traded bites to learn the other plates were also good. I will say the dessert menu lacked some variety besides 2 choices but we were full anyways. We will definitely be back but got to remember to get reservations in advanced enough. read more

We had dinner at The Hound while visiting Auburn University and were very impressed with The Hound. The atmosphere has a great vibe and our server was great. The food and drinks were delicious as well. I would highly recommend the Meatloaf (I never thought those words would come from me but it was soooooo good) and the Fried Rice - it had really unique flavors and I wish I could have it all the time. Came on a Saturday night, this is not our first time here. When we go out, we want to enjoy a meal without struggling with over salted and lack of taste in a dining experience. The Brussels sprouts dish was so over the top salted, and sweetened I wonder if the chef tries these dishes at all. If you're providing this as a main, it would be wonderful to balance it out with a complimentary flavor. I know everyone has to make $$$ but 18.00 for a bowl of burnt oil/salt laden crisps is not nutritious or appealing. The burgers were so thin, please don't call them burgers. 2 grown men left hungry because a double burger was probably 6 oz of meat. Over salted fries...how about a baked potato? Very limited menu. Be better. Provide normal portions, or creative dishes using good protein sources. Bread and large amounts of over salted/sugared mains only makes people question why they bothered. We felt swollen, bloated and hungry for something satiating. I won't mention the bill, if you are going to run a restaurant (I have opened and operated a number of them with amazing chefs) , provide options without looking purely at profit, or change your menu. read more

So impressed with the hound. We had a reservation and were seated promptly when our entire party was here. Everyone from the host to the waiter was so friendly and made us feel comfortable. I'd heard a lot about The Hound over the years but had never been. Honestly, I had passed by it a dozen times and never realized that's what it was. First off, parking is not great. Not exclusive to The Hound, there are just a lot of businesses packed into downtown without a lot of parking. We lucked out and got parking in the shared lot in front of The Hound (by the deck). Smallish menu, which is not a bad thing, and there seems to be options for anything you might be wanting. I like the atmosphere, and the food was good. I had a chicken sandwich and fries, though next time I'm back I will probably go for one of the more curated specialty dishes. read more
