Once again it was our annual LSU women's basketball game pilgrimage so Gary, Garrett and I piled into Paul's truck and we headed down to Auburn on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. Garrett suggested Amsterdam for lunch. Located near the Auburn campus, Amsterdam is one of more well known eateries off campus. Students may not have eaten at Amsterdam, but most can point you in the right direction. I've been tricked by appearances before but Amsterdam is in a category of its own. There's a front and a back part of the building. But I didn't know that until we were led to our table in the back. The front part is a typical "smallish" restaurant with tight booths and tables. The decorations of impressionist painters adorn the walls giving the front dining room a warm inviting feel. When we were led to our table, I thought I was being led to the restrooms. We actually went past the restrooms down a small flight of stairs and into another large room. This beautiful back room was oozing the "hidden wine cellar" vibe throughout. There were tables and chairs in the center with smaller tables and chairs lining one wall and booths on another. Then there's a large full service bar lining the 3rd wall and a workstation on the 4th wall. The ceiling with hanging panels of wood moved the light beautifully and impressed me. There was also a large floor to ceiling wine rack next to our 4 top. Gary tried their Omelet. Three eggs served with conecuh sausage, bacon, onions, peppers, cheddar cheese, and potatoes. With the sourdough toast, the plating was immaculate. I didn't get to taste it, but Gary didn't have any deiicions/ Garrett opted for their Brunch special: Apple & Pecan Freeman toast. When it arrived to our table, we immediately noticed the large slices of French toast. As promised, the French toast was topped with slices of peaches and apples and butter brown sugar with white powder sugar as well. Again I didn't get to taste, but I savored it with my eye. Paul and I tried the Amsterdam Burger. He got some fries as his side, but I upgraded my side to a beautifully plated side salad. With the added fried egg, my patty was grilled to a perfect medium with just a hint of pink. Stacked with it was some lettuce, caramelized onions, applewood bacon, spicy pickles, tomato and their traditional burger sauce all squeezed together between 2 bun halves, it has to be stabbed with a long food pick to hold it together. It was juicy, tasty and just Yom Yom Yom Yom. Our server was attentive and checked on us frequently. Other notable menu items include fried brussels, lobster egg rolls, rum salmon, breakfast croissant, snickerdoodle pancakes, steak & eggs, egg white omelet and shrimp & grits. I was told their Crab Cake & Avocado is to die for. Meal prices are on the high end but Amsterdam understands how to elevate Southern comfort food. read more

My friends and I had lunch at Amsterdam Café on Sunday before an Auburn basketball game. The restaurant is conveniently located next to campus and just a short drive from the Neville area. The small storefront is a bit misleading compared to what's inside--the space is surprisingly deep, with separate dining areas in the front and back. The front dining area has a very casual vibe, while the back is still relaxed but features much more sophisticated décor. To reach the back dining room, you walk past the kitchen and restrooms, go down a few steps, and arrive at a large dining space with a long bar. We visited mid-morning, so brunch was being served. The brunch menu offered some interesting options, including Snickerdoodle Pancakes and a Brisket Breakfast Bowl, along with soups, salads, and sandwiches. I ordered the classic Amsterdam Burger with a side of French fries. The burger was excellent--cooked perfectly to a medium temperature. It was large and topped with applewood bacon and caramelized onions, which were a great combination. The fries were good, though I personally would have liked them a bit crispier. read more

Amazing place. There has to be a line three blocks long during football season. And I'd wait for this food. The service is great. It's a very small place. Very local but welcoming vibe. Fried green tomatoes are legit. Wife got seabass. She never does because I cook it. She said this was a tie. The fennel and spinach salad on the top was killer. I got shrimp and the richest grits. Super late night dinner and we are so glad they were available! We made a reservation on the Resy app and sat in a booth near the bar. Staff is super nice, food was amazing. We got the fried chicken Mac/cheese with the egg rolls for appetizers and margarita and a beer. ALL were magnificent! And if you're just wanting a light nibbles and a drink, the egg rolls are filling alone and the margarita was epic! Definitely going back on our next trip to Auburn University area. read more

You have lost a loyal customer. While dining at your Amsterdam SJP location last evening, my family and I were extremely disappointed and frustrated by the way a situation was handled by the manager. We ordered the Blackened Chicken Nachos and requested that they be prepared without pico de gallo. We have made this same request many times in the past. Because the standard rice served with the nachos already contains pico mixed into it, we simply asked that it be substituted with the cilantro lime rice instead. Our server said that would not be a problem. There were six people in our party, and everyone received their meals except for the nachos. After a lengthy wait, an assistant manager came to our table and informed us that the manager had refused the substitution because, according to her, it would be "a waste of product." I fail to understand how substituting one type of rice for another constitutes a waste of product. More disappointing was the fact that the manager would not come to our table to discuss the issue herself. Instead, she chose to send someone else to deliver the message. Our bill exceeded $120. If refusing a simple rice substitution is more important than providing good customer service to paying guests, then the priorities at this location are seriously misplaced. This experience left us feeling unappreciated as customers, and because of the manager's handling of such a simple request, we will not be returning. I hope you will address this issue so that future customers are treated with the respect and consideration they deserve. read more

Definitely a food jewel in auburn! My go to is the pan fried salmon added to the Cobb salad with a side of fries. I would recommend the Brussels and spinach dip for appetizers,though. Recently I visited on game day for their game day menu and I ordered the seabass which was outstanding!! The service is always prompt and warm as well. read more

Love this place. It's bigger than you would think upon walking in as there is a big back room plus a great big patio. Will definitely do the patio next time as I sat in the up front smaller area at a high top table and the vibe was not as good as the other areas of the restaurant. Also didn't like that they kept on MMA fighting on all the TVs during normal dinner hours. This isn't that kind of place and it felt off watching people bash each other's brains in with little kids around. Food and drink were excellent. The old fashioned was great. I like that they used square cubes. One single big cube is best but small square cubes over ice chips are nearly as good. The pork chop was tremendous. Cook was perfect and the sauce was delicious. The real star, however, were the sides. You really can't beat getting THREE sides, all of which were delicious: collard greens, black eyed pea succotash and a biscuit. Service was attentive. They've had the best burger in town for a long time. NOT ANYMORE. Do not get the burger here now. It tastes more like the burgers at McDonalds! The food here is incredible. I was completely blown away by the incredible service, the beautiful presentation, and the amazingly flavorful and healthy food we had. I ordered the Crab Cake and Avocado Croissant Sandwich with a garden salad and it was incredible. The salad was huge and delicious. The crab cake was perfectly seasoned crab magically held together with the lightest crumb that was crunchy on the outside and perfectly teamed in the middle. Nothing soggy or bready about this in the least. All of the extras were perfect for sampling with the crab cake and I enjoyed all the different flavors. The croissant was wonderful, fresh, and very tender. My husband ordered the burger and it looked and smelled incredible. His food came out first, and honestly I was filled with regret when I smelled his food . . . until mine came out and I was blown away by how lovely and delicious it was. Amersterdam Cafe is one of my favorite restaurants in Auburn. The food is consistently good and the service is great, too. Our current visit to Amsterdam did not disappoint. Our waitress was very attentive and our food and drinks were delicious. I had the prime ribeye with mashed potatoes and asparagus and my son had the Chicken Gemelli Alfredo. Stopped in as this restaurant was highly recommended and I'm not from the area. I walked right in and was able to place a Togo order at the bar and had my food in less than 5 mins. Staff was kind and accommodating. The food was absolutely delicious and I'm so glad I made a point to stop in and give it a try. The Turkey wraps were nicely cut into small pinwheels and great for dipping into the honey mustard and ranch I asked for on the side. The sweet potato chips are homemade and very light/crispy. The ranch and honey mustard were also delicious. All in all a great experience here. They have full service seating, a bar, outdoor patio, curbside pickup, and Togo. There is parking for pick up as well as parking for dining in at multiple places around the building. Definitely exactly to come back and try more off the menu! read more

I moved all the ingredients from one half onto the other half to make it an adequate amount of food. So, a half sandwich and fries for $17, plus tax and tip. This is my second disappointing visit. We have loved Amsterdam. This evening we had a reservation at the Gay Street location for 7:30 p.m. for 4 people. As we were seated and enjoying our drinks and appetizers, 2 other guests we invited and thought had declined showed up. We kindly asked to be reseated or possibly divide. The hostess never returned after telling us she would check. Our waitress was highly annoyed when we asked her and said it would be too much trouble to move the stuff (the 2 drinks and 2 appetizers) and that there was no availability. By this time it is 8 p.m. and there are at least 8 empty tables in the front portion of the restaurant including one 6 top and 4 empty tables outside with no one waiting for a table. We asked for our check, went to another restaurant and were immediately seated and served. This was such a disappointment as we previously loved Amsterdam for a nice dining experience. read more
