We were in town for bid day and excited to try Acre, as it was the first time we have been able to get a reservation. This is my first ever review on yelp. I travel 30 weeks a year. Maybe the ambience, bar, drinks, all gave us false hopes. Being seated with a reservation, the fried okra app was by far the best dish of the night. My wife got the Whole Pompano, it was decent but the sides left much to be desired. I got the Redfish, it was a generous size piece of fish, but the seasoning on top was horrendous. It was like they dumped a whole bottle of blackened seasoning on top. The crispy potatoes came out luke warm, like they had been sitting under a heating lamp for 2 hours. Maybe we caught Acre on the back end of a busy weekend. Very disappointed dishes for $40. read more

This might be my new favorite restaurant in Auburn, quintessential southern cooking of the highest quality with clever twists and unique fusion. It was a Saturday afternoon and I was watching the Auburn football game on television. A sideline announcer showed off some "chicken fried" bacon from Acre. And that's about all the inspiration I needed to start placing my to-go order IMMEDIATELY! Indeed, the "chicken fried" bacon is stunning! It's an unusual and splendid combination, the ultimate crispy batter flaking off in delicious chunks like you're biting into fried chicken, but surrounding a thick, salty strip of bacon! It comes with Vermont maple syrup, sawmill gravy, and barbecued pecans. The okra with a house-made creole remoulade white sauce is among the better fried okras you'll ever eat. Then came the pepper jack chicken sandwich, a huge work of art with spicy cheese, pickles, a rich barbecue-style sauce, pepper jack cheese, and smoked bacon! This sandwich is stellar! The crispy catfish tacos have impossibly flaky catfish with a delicious slaw, fresh cilantro, aioli, and jack cheese. Just add a sizable dollop of the accompanying house-made condiment akin to cocktail sauce and a squeeze of the lemon provided, and you'll have your own masterpiece! There were only two shortcomings for me, but not enough to revoke my 5-star rating. The homemade paprika chips need a trip back to the drawing board, and I really prefer my bacon tender and juicy, not hard and crispy. But Acre is a stunning overall experience! read more

Stopped in for dinner during a college visit with a group of parents. The server was super great and attentive to our table of 8. She was awesome actually. Getting the original round of drinks was a little slow, but to be fair there were a couple other large tables that had just arrived slightly before us. So not a big deal. The food had great presentation and were all very prepared. Very tasty. The menu is a little limited with 3 seafood entrees, a steak, and poultry dish. There may have been one more special. All really good. The only slight complaint was that the restroom could have been cleaner and seemed to need some slight maintenance and cleaning. But not anything specific. read more

The food and service here were both quite good. The fried green tomatoes with a small scoop of pimento cheese were a great start. I had the duck breast and it was delicious. I have duck whenever I'm at a restaurant that I think might serve it nicely, and they did. The accompanying goat cheese risotto was disappointing though. It was kind of tasteless (or maybe just couldn't stand up to the duck?). At first it looked like a riced cauliflower dish, but then when I tasted it, I realized what it was (yes, I know, it said it in the menu, but all I saw was DUCK!). There was not a vegetable in sight on that plate, so I just ended up eating meat, which was delicious, but game fowl can use an earthy vegetable to go with it, and it was missed. My husband had the shrimp pasta which he demolished. I barely got a taste, but what I tried was delicious. Here's why I knocked off a star. We arrived 15-20 minutes early so we could sit at the bar and enjoy a cocktail. We do this all the time at fine restaurants where we live and it works out fine, even if we end up finishing the drinks at the table. But as soon as we checked in with the hostess, it was like they were in a race to get us seated to turn the table over. We sat at the bar and ordered and the hostess came over twice to see if she could seat us, while even the bartender pleaded with her to give him a minute to make the drinks. Had we wanted to be seated quickly, we would have skipped the bar part, but it was like we couldn't even enjoy our usual cocktail part of arriving early for the hostess literally pulling us away to sit down at a table and start talking about food with the server. Did it ruin the whole experience? No. Was it annoying as hell? Yes. It makes for a hurried first minutes at a restaurant where you are spending your money to relax and enjoy. read more

Acre is a wonderful farm-to-table experience. It is located in the heart of Auburn, and they have maximized the use of their prime real estate. It is actually an acre of land (hence the name), and includes a standalone building with a private parking lot - valet parking only. There are on-premise gardens where vegetables and herbs are grown and used in the daily dishes. My daughter Kristine and I dined here on a Thursday night to celebrate her birthday. What a treat for both of us. We started with Fried Green Tomatoes appetizer. Slices of fried green tomatoes are served on a bed of pimento cheese. Then topped with lump crabmeat and garnished with fresh greens and chopped tomatoes. Simply amazing. I would be satisfied with this as my main course. Kristine ordered the beef tenderloin for her entree. It was a beautiful filet that was cooked to perfection. Seasoned, tender, and flavorful. The best steak I've tasted in a long time. It was served with roasted red potatoes and crisp green beans. I ordered the Gulf Red Snapper. The generous piece of fish was seared and cooked just right. The fish was topped with a reduction that was flavorful and complemented the fish nicely. The dish was presented with field greens and jalapeño that came straight from the garden. We also ordered a side of Brussel sprouts, and they were delicious too. They were prepared with garlic and sweet pecans. Interesting combination that we both loved. For dessert we shared a peanut butter pie that was fabulous. There is a reason Chef David has been a James Beard nominee for best chef in the south. Acre is an automatic choice when visiting our Auburn student. Been multiple times and loved it every time. They are on Resy for reservations. Last night they had just changed their appetizer menu and added a couple of fish items on it. I really enjoyed the Pompano ceviche with dill pita chips, it had a little kick to it, but not overpowering. For my entree last night I had the grouper, which is more Cajun than I thought it would be, but with crawfish, sausage, and potlikker, I should have known...it was so flavorful but be warned that it was spicy. Our server Emily was outstanding! She recommended for dessert cornbread with salted butter ice cream, which is one of the more bold dessert recommendations I have been given, but I am always up for a challenge...unbelievably great choice, however! The menu sucked, waited over an hour for our food, food was decent but I was so hungover I couldn't even enjoy it. Didn't like my waitress, she wasn't very outgoing and her attitude kinda sucked. Dont even get me started on the Valet. Kids were nice and doing their best, but cars were so backed up I was trapped in the parking lot for like 10 minutes. We travel from the West coast every year to stay and dine in the area which always includes Acre. This year we were celebrating our wedding anniversary. It has always been a highlight for us to dine here during our stay. The food is consistently 5 star (as was this visit) however, this time the service was beyond terrible. Bar tender was bothered that I asked to order drinks. Then when our table was ready the young lady told us that she could sit my wife, but that I had to "settle up at the bar" before I could join her. Our waitress could have cared less about her tables or making sure that patrons had a good experience. She also had limited knowledge of menu and ingredients in dishes. Never acknowledged our anniversary or anything else for that matter. During our time in Alabama we met a prominent Auburn business owner who had taken his parents to Acre for their 45th wedding anniversary, just a few months before our visit. They too had a terrible experience, leaving his mother in tears. Needless to say, we most likely won't ever go back. read more

We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner at Acre. The atmosphere was very relaxing, with low lighting and southern-style accents. We were served quickly and I appreciated the recommendations given by our waitress. The Boudin balls were my favorite! My husband and I really enjoyed the spicy mustard and pickles that came with it. He had the flounder and I got the wolffish (both were special features this evening). The food was fresh, though the portions are small. We were expecting this, so it wasn't anything to complain about. Onto the cocktails! I got the Beet Bama and it was SO GOOD. My husband ordered Sweater Weather followed by a Call Me Old Fashioned. We went here for a birthday dinner this week. We started with the boudin balls and the Cesar salad. My husband really enjoyed the boudin balls, as he really enjoys brisket and anything bbq. The Caesar salad fell short. Something in the salad was very bitter and we couldn't taste the dressing very much. The sourdough croutons were the best part about the salad. For our entres, we ordered the scallops and the rigatoni. My husband really enjoyed the scallops and the grit cakes. The coconut sauce lacked flavor though. My rigatoni was OK. The sauce was great, the sweet corn was fresh and sweet, but the shrimp tasted very fishy, and the noodles were undercooked. I'm sure they were going for an al dente texture, but the noodles had a hard bite to it. I had my husband try it just to make sure it wasn't me, and he agreed that the noodles were not cooked enough. We had to wait almost an hour to receive our entres. We had to wait at least 20-25 minutes just for our starters to come out. The caveat to this was that they were busy, but we were very hungry. Our waiter was great! We were just expecting a little bit more from Acre especially with the buzz surrounding its reputation. We would come back, but I would order something different. read more

We have gone to Acre often over the years and generally like it, but it's been a while. Tonight, a serious disappointment. I ordered the duck, medium rare, came medium well. My husband ordered the ribeye, no more than medium rare, came medium well. Mentioned that to the server, he offered us dessert (which we declined). When the food isn't up to par, elan is important. In a good restaurant you would expect the server would pour an $80 bottle of wine. But no. And in a good restaurant there is generally someone from management who walks around all evening, says hello, asks how things are going, you know, makes you feel like they are glad you came to their restaurant. Again, no. Once upon a time this was the only really good restaurant in Auburn. That isn't true anymore. And much of the competition DOES make the effort. So it will be a long while before we try again at Acre. read more
