An unfortunate event lead to our trying this most excellent restaurant. A broken piece of artwork needing restoration necessitated a trip to Bend, OR. Between the exceptionally good food at Hook and Plow, a most pleasant hotel experience, and a memorable trip to the High Desert Museum; our trip to Bend turned out to be a pleasure instead of the miserableness I expected. We had the Steak Tartare, the Chef's Board, the Blackend Crabcake, the Pear and Burrata Salad, and the Bone-in Pork Chop. We each got the cheesecake for desert and split the other dishes. This was more than enough for the three of us and we left full, happy, and with three large to-go boxes. The flavors of the various dishes were amazing. Bend, OR has its share of delicious fine dining restaurants and The Hook & Plow is no exception. While the food is on the high end side, the vibes were definitely more casual. We were greeted by the host and seated quickly. We started our meal with a delicious non-alcoholic drink and the Chef's Board: a charcuterie with an assortment of cured meats, rustic bread, and various spreads. That came out pretty quickly. Unfortunately, our main courses came out much, much later and lukewarm. Luckily, the food was good enough that it made up for the temperature. I had the NY strip steak. The steak and the Boursin mashed potatoes alone were very good. The pickled onions and chimichurri complemented the meat very well. The meal was supposed to include brussel sprouts but came with a grilled broccoli cauliflower assortment instead. My wife had the Scallop Risotto which was also a great recommendation from the server. In reality, The Hook & Plow deserved 3 1/2 stars but that's not an option on Yelp. It may have been an off night for the staff, so I will give them the benefit of doubt. We would be open to trying it again sometime in the future. read more

Parking is rough but we found a spot on our next circle through. The waitress was very patient with all my questions about gluten. My menu had "gf" crossed out for the fish and chips. They changed the recipe so now they're beer bartered and no longer gluten free. You are limited to a few appetizers and salads. I tried the steak tartare and it's not great. It was my first time so I'm not sure how it compares to other places. One friend said it had a strong sesame oil flavor? The ahi poke was fine. I did like my salad- pear and burrata. The pomegranate molasses and cheese and pears were nice together. Overall, I wouldn't go here again as a gf person. While I enjoyed my meal overall, this just isn't the kind of place I enjoy. It's very white and bright, for Bend, and the food preparation seemed a little too "California" for me. I had the New York Strip steak, and it perfectly cooked. But I didn't enjoy the brightness of the sauce. I think lots of folks will enjoy a meal here...just not my kind of place! read more

My partner and I went during Happy Hour on a Tuesday and it was so good! Walking in, it feels elevated and rustic. Very nice vibes. I loved the open windows on the other side of the room but the side we were on was nice and quiet. Food and drinks wrre incredible!! The chef's special bread and butter were really good and the appetizer board had such a good variety of items. The selection of wine was also great and I chose a Syrah! My partner had the Kentucky Buck, the Oaxacan Old Fashioned, and the Watermelon Julep and every one of them was so good! Our server was very nice and professional. Went for my son's Birthday-his choice. It was VERY loud so I couldn't have conversation with anyone around me, I had a salad loaded with parm ch ear that I think would've been delicious if it hadn't been dumped with salt. I love lots of salt but this was extremely salty I couldn't even eat it. Tried to get someone's attention to take it away but by the time the waitress came to check on us everyone else was finished. We had such a wonderful dinner here. As soon as I walked in, I love the open bright, modern decor, and the servers and staff are all very friendly. They have the best happy hour food options. From the happy hour menu, we got the diverse scallops, chicken wings, and the Ahi Poke tostadas. Chicken wings came with delicious Sriracha sauce. The poke tostada was perfect with fresh tuna creamy sauce and a crisp tostada shell. It only comes with one so I would get multiple to share . From the dinner menu, we got the carrot hummus, which was so deliciously surprisingly amazing for being carrot based - it was one of my fave dishes of the night . Wish I could buy this hummus all the time ! The fresh catch of the day was a halibut. It was a good portion, perfectly cooked very tender, and we loved the unique twist of it coming on top of a crisp potato latke. Had a wonderful dinner last night in Bend with my family! The atmosphere is lovely, lots of windows with natural sunlight and the decorations & accents matching the nautical theme. The food was absolutely amazing, I think with our group we got to try a little of everything, which I'm grateful for. To start, for appetizers we had the house made bread and the peach and burrata salad, the small details really added to the food with the nuts on the salad and even the bread&butter was something special. Then for mains we tried the fish and chips, scallops paired with the risotto, and the crab cake paired with the carrots. I can honestly say everything was so good, the crab cake, scallops, and even fish and chips were some of the best we've had, and the sides of risotto and carrots are both a must try!! (My family said they were the best carrots they've had.) It was my mom's birthday and the staff and everything about the night was wonderful. Hidden in plain sight. Excellent service, quality meal! We've visited Hook&Plow several times now for a variety of reasons, girls night, happy hour, family in town, date night, etc. and have consistently had a great experience! The oysters are well shucked, the drinks are great and the menu changes to reflect the latest trends. We went last night and had the lobster risotto, steak, oysters and spicy margaritas. The food was excellent but the service is really what sets this place to five stars. We did have a slight hiccup with cook on one of our meals and not only did our server take the feedback with grace she proactively comped the item and made sure the replacement dish came out quick. Really a masterclass in customer service and something a lot of places are missing. Hook&Plow is somewhat hidden in the apartment complex but don't miss out. It is a bit tucked in across from an apartment building that is part of giant complex that had several bussinessess. I went to get the gluten free fish and chips but unfortunately it had been discontinued. I pivoted and got the salmon salad it was one of the best i have had. The crispy skin and charged veggies mixed with a yummy saffron balsamic was very unexpected and delicious. The staff is very nice and helpful. What a fantastic meal and experience! From the warm welcome, inviting decor, and relaxed atmosphere, we immediately got the sense that we were among friends. Nick took excellent care of our group of 4 - he knew the menu and ingredients and made great suggestions. He brought water to the table and included lemons and cucumbers as well. It's a small touch but one that lets you know this would be a well curated experience. Great options for drinks from beers to cocktails. Do not skip the bread and butter - again sounds simple but the local bread was perfectly toasted with creamy salted butter. All of our meals were some of the best food that each of us has ever had. The seafood chowder got rave reviews, the burrata salad was fresh and bright, and the short rib with Tillamook cheddar polenta was outstanding. Got there on a Thursday evening, having traveled from Portland and hiking at Smith Rock State Perk. We did not have reservations, but the hostess was gracious enough to find us a spot at the bar. We started with a dozen oysters and everything about them were good. Next we had the roasted pear and burrata salad. Always open to trying something new, this was a different taste. When combined with the burrata, it was a good taste The surprise of the night was the "Fresh off the Hook" pan roasted halibut with ricotta gnocchi, mushrooms and dashi broth. The halibut was cocked to perfection. The gnocchi was creamy and melted in your mouth. However. The dashi broth completely made the dish. Everything combined together was excellent For dessert we had the bread pudding. The outside was crispy, the inside soft and moist, and it was excellent. We had a really nice evening. What a great spot to end off our trip to Bend! We went here for dinner on a whim, and it was a great choice. The space was light and airy, coastal vibes. The service was great, our server was so attentive. Our glasses of water was never not full! The Oysters tasted fresh, but I've had better ones, especially at this price point. Celebrated our 22nd wedding anniversary here last night. The bread and butter is a must have and the pear and burrata salad was really good too. Bend location of a CA based small chain (they may have an eatery in Seattle now too) with casual, "farm to fork and hook to plate" focus. Our dinner here was the end of September and the restaurant had been open for a couple of weeks so we understood the new-eatery-wobbles for process and food issues, which is not unexpected anywhere. VIBE: Added to their challenges is that they opened without the right tables given their furniture order was long delayed and had to soldier on using awkward temporary tables covered with white cloths. The menu and vibe of the place is not white-tablecloth-fine-dining by any stretch (example, nautical fishing ropes at edge of bar space) for theme and I think it may throw things a little off kilter for guests who may interpret white cloths equal fine dining. So go with casual menu and dining in mind. But some schtick made us chuckle and groan, like serving water in Ball canning jars alongside a menu with $36 scallops and $40 flat iron steak. ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING: They are trying and in illustration of that I'll share that when the hostess (front of house manager too and I assumed an owner) joined the server in bringing to our table a missing piece of one of our apps (we would not even have known it was missing) to apologize she said something like this: "We will make mistakes and when we do we will make things right." As the evening went on, that seemed to be true as a laudable focus on getting things right for all guests. Although, I will also note that some guests were not as happy about that, as the table next to us impatient with snafus between kitchen and front of house processes and food issues who gave their college age server, who like most here seemed well trained but new to the gig, a hard time. I applaud the team for trying. MAKE RESERVATIONS: If this review is TLDNR for you, I'll provide an important tip up front and it is this: make reservations. We had early ones, 4:30 on a Friday night and they were turning away walk-ins as early as 5:00 for being fully booked for the evening. SERVICE: I'll mention our server by name, Savannah, because she did a great job and she is a student who is also new to the work of hospitality and restaurant service although she clearly demonstrated past experience in customer facing work. She made us feel welcome at the outset, she could answer all of our questions about the menu and food and made good suggestions for libations. As long time former Bend residents who now visit several times a year, we also appreciated that she engaged with our comments about new things in town. I used to work in this industry and hiring people with this kind of customer focus is key to success. Service skills can be trained, stellar attitude is something the employee needs to have to start and she does. MENU: Similar for all in the chain. Farm-fresh focus seems a bit off kilter for a menu that featured asparagus near'ish October in Central Oregon with the fish of the day. Giveaway to the chain roots. (Although the fish was Oregon caught ling cod as I recall.) Something good to be had for all diners is a menu with options that include a handful of raw bar choices ($16-18 plus oysters A.Q.), several starters from $8 (local bakery bread and butter) to $21 (chef's board), four salads $14-24, four sandwiches $22 (burger) to $24 (seared ahi), several entrees $27 (vegetarian mezze plate) to $40 (flat iron steak) and desserts $12-14. LIBATIONS: Full bar and the mixologist rocking the man bun (from San Diego I think he said) knows his stuff so this is the place to indulge in a house specialty cocktail (about $14-17). OUR MEAL / $: $113 (after tax / before tip) for two diners included: *two cocktails ($15 each), *two apps (falafel and grilled oyster mushrooms), *shared entree (scallops and risotto), *shared dessert (lemon posset), * coffee (small French press for two). The mushrooms were, alas, the worst dish of a six day food focused vacation, arriving at table undercooked and cold, as if they sat in the kitchen waiting on the falafel, but the aji verde with them was very good. Delicious falafel and the harissa on top. Scallops and risotto dish was just right but served in a near room temp cast iron skillet which was not the cooking vessel for the warm risotto that had clearly been added to it to serve and so seemed an odd-schtick-choice. Save room for that lemon dessert. ACCESSIBILITY: All on one level, some tables have clear floor space room for wheelchair users. Path of travel, the ADA requirement is 36" behind tables when diners are seated so disabled diners can get to and from tables, may be iffy. Didn't check the loo. Lot has accessible parking at back side of restaurant and at the end of sidewalk near Raw Bar eatery and around corner from Viaggio Wine Merchant (go there!). four of us went to Hook and plow tonight Saturday and I have to say it was really underwhelming on just about every level. The guys had fish and and my friend had the lobster risotto. I had the roasted salad with scallops on the side and a cup of soup also had dirty martinis, and the guys had some bears. The martinis were OK, but just about broke a tooth with unexpected in the olives! Minor sidenote there was nothing to put the olives on after you ate them. The risotto was OK not and the salad was merely adequate. The soup was pretty good a little but pretty good and the scallops were pitiful. All in all nothing to write home about certainly would never go back and it was interesting that we were not asked how our food was. What a great find in Bend OR, great vibe in a well designed commercial area. Open air with lots of windows and a local feel. Our server was very good, happy and pleasant to serve. We started with some of their cocktails, very refreshing. Then some fresh oysters on the half shell and shared a cup of their Fish Chowder, both were delicious. The house baked bread and salted butter were very good as well. Our entree's were the fish and chips and the salmon salad with green goddess dressing, asparagus, mixed greens, radishes and toasted nuts. I was very happy to be able to experience this place, and glad we went early. We did not have a reservation but went early. It filled up fast including the bar. If you find yourself in Bend and looking for an amazing casual place to enjoy a cocktail and nibble or dine this is your place and worth a try. Unfortunately on my first visit, I found my menu choice very lacking. I had chosen the lobster risotto ($40). It was basically very dried up rice and a small piece of lobster tail. I asked for some more sauce which they added but nothing in the meal made me think it was worth the price. My partner had a side salad and while there was no ranch or blue cheese dressing, they did have ceasar. He asked for more and they only had a very small amount left in the restaurant. We ate dinner there recently by recommendation. Ambience was a C. Noisy, "industrial"(that's what I call the open ceiling exposed pipe horrible acoustics) vibe which I know a lot of people like. Service was very good but server had little warmth. Food was well... certainly not as good as the reviews speak of. Especially for the high prices. I had short ribs which were good but I've had them at other high end restaurants and they remove more of the fat.My carrots were mush. My husband had chicken which was a D. Overcooked, sauce was interesting and excessive rice to one tiny dry breast. Presentation in all the meals was D- Sorely disappointed and would not recommend. DRY af, with ZERO seasoning, I had to ask the server for lemon and melted butter, along with salt & pepper just to make it edible.
