Elly's was a great place to visit while I was in Bend! I visited late on a Saturday evening, and given the line, I could tell this was a popular destination. I appreciated the friendly service, and I sampled a few different ice creams to get a sense of what was on offer. They also have soft serve if that's more your speed. I ended up ordering a vanilla milkshake, which had a great texture (thick yet smooth) and flavor. I liked my treat so much, I hoped I could visit again before I left town! Tucked inside The Grove food hall on Bend's west side near Northwest Crossing, it is a destination visit to buy Elly's Ice cream. Alas, our experience was that while there are several reasons to have The Grove on destination list, Elly's is not one of them. The ice cream is, in Central Oregon speak (I lived there for nearly 20 years) "spendy" and while I am very happy to pay for excellent product that is locally made (I'm talkin' to you Bonta Gelato https://www.yelp.com/biz/bont%C3%A0-natural-artisan-gelato-bend-3 ) the Elly's we tried was pretty unremarkable for texture and flavor. This is supposedly a super premium ice cream made for them by a Seattle maker, per the girls at the counter, and the shop carries the first name of the wife of the husband wife local owners so I'm sure there is pride in the product. I go out of my way to support "mom n pop shops" but if this is the outcome, as I heard in owner interview, of extensive travel to taste the very best ice cream to have these custom made...well, boy howdy...I'm perplexed. Different strokes for different taste buds. I am reluctant to post a "just so so" comment for local owned business but were I thinking I was going to brave the lousy parking near The Grove (small lot, overflow is on neighborhood streets and can be a bit of hike to get here) just to try this ice cream I'd want to know in advance. As for the service at this counter, there were four friendly young women who were having a good time together and managing to do the work of two people. And the entire counter / shop space looked like it could use a once over to spruce up. It was a mid afternoon on a weekend so maybe it had been busy earlier to make it so, but as we sat inside to enjoy the soup of the day from Sebastian's Seafood and Specialty Market Cafe (this is worth the destination visit, parking hassles and all, https://www.yelp.com/biz/sebastians-seafood-and-specialty-market-bend) we noticed only one group of four stopping by Elly's. read more

Really wonderful service and ice cream. We had the Cookie Monster, strawberry and thyme and root beer. Strawberries and thyme was fabulous.My son has a peanut allergy and the worker Cooper asked if we needed a new scooper and went out of his way to make sure no peanuts or peanut products touched his ice cream even while getting a topping. Terrible service. There was a young man watching a young woman work. He never offered to help. Owner's child? Unsure. He was about the same age as the young woman. He acted as if he was superior to her and to every woman in the place. They ran out of lids for the pint I got. The young man just said he'd put some plastic wrap on it. No apology or anything. Was really excited to try this place based off the pics and other reviews. I love marshmallows and chocolate so I went with Gone Glamping. But... they were out of chocolate ice cream. Strike 1. It was decent, but nothing extra ordinary. Probably would have been better with chocolate. The reason I'm going with 3 stars is because of my wife's sundae. She got the Mornin Sunshine. The description reads "fresh fruit". It was clearly frozen strawberries in syrup. Yuck. Strike 2. After diving through the small layer of whipped cream, honey, and NOT fresh fruit... 3/4 of the cup was just plain vanilla soft serve. $10 for a cup of vanilla soft serve with minimal toppings... not worth it at all. Elly's was first opening when I visited this summer. They had some really awesome options for ice cream. Their shakes were most appealing to my family. Our family loved the Peanut butter bomb and the Cookie crumble. If there is a line, it might take a little while to get your order but it's way worth the wait. It is inside so you'll need to get out and wait in line to order. There is plenty of space to park and no worry about that. The employees were all so kind and attentive to our needs. read more

This shop is an absolute delight. I loved their little corner in the back of the building. The staff is really sweet with a great sense of humor. The younger red-headed guy with tattoos was serving the ice cream. He was quick to help me out with some suggestions and ultimately I decided on the cereal milkshake. It was totally worth it. It pains me to write a bad review about an ice cream shop. They should all be happy and joyful! I ordered the seasonal ice cream (off the board) and it turned out to be sorbet. When I went to explain my confusion and seek a scoop of actual ice cream, I was treated rudely. When I suggested they add a note to the seasonal board (signaling that the flavor is not ice cream - to avoid any future confusion), I got shot a "really lady (?)" face. Also, I paid for my replacement scoop, and even though I wasn't asking for a free replacement scoop, had I worked here I would've comped it...because I would've given grace to the customer for MY confusing signage! And a happy customer is worth the $5 replacement scoop value. it's ICE CREAM! It's not supposed to feel like this!!! read more

Great location. Friendly staff. Ice cream tastes sweet but lacks flavor. They charge extra for a second flavor in the same cup. So a small portion that is normally $4.75 bumps up to $6 if you want two different flavors. It's not really worth it because it isn't even good ice cream. read more

Very good ice cream. Premium prices - fair enough for the location. Surcharge to use credit cards on top of premium prices when paying conveniently is a stand part of premium dining experience? They even have a legitimate Little Jem ice cream mixer. Their menu is really simple, with only two types of base, one vegan, one dairy, and four different fruits. They offer two different sizes, but I'm not sure how much larger the regular is vs. the small. The little display in the front doesn't make the regular seem much larger. Perhaps they should actually display the volumes to make it clear? Regular, Vanilla Base, Marionberry ($8.50) - They use a really, really stretchy base here, stretchier than most ice creams that I've ever eaten, almost like it has mastic gum added. Other reviews mention they use Tillamook as the base, but I'm a little skeptical. Tillamook is certainly stretchy since they use guar gum as a stabilizer, but I can't recall it being quite that stretchy! I believe most other NZ real fruit ice cream places use sweet cream as the base to really allow the fruit flavors to shine, but Birdsong uses vanilla, which adds a delightful note that enhances rather than covers up the fruit. It's a complementary flavor and works very well together, although I personally still prefer having sweet cream only. The fruit is blended in very well so there aren't any icy pieces at all, with the only textural difference coming from a small bit of crunch from the seeds in the marionberries. It's otherwise a sweet, berry fruity dessert. I guess the one downside is that the portion size is kind of lacking for the price. I get more from the real fruit ice cream places in Seattle for cheaper, despite Seattle being much higher cost of living. (4/5) Birdsong serves a pretty decent representation of New Zealand real fruit ice cream, at least to my limited knowledge! It's certainly worth a try, if not just as a sweet frozen treat.

The steak and the Boursin mashed potatoes alone were very good. The pickled onions and chimichurri complemented the meat very well. The meal was supposed to include brussel sprouts but came with a grilled broccoli cauliflower assortment instead. My wife had the Scallop Risotto which was also a great recommendation from the server. In reality, The Hook & Plow deserved 3 1/2 stars but that's not an option on Yelp. It may have been an off night for the staff, so I will give them the benefit of doubt. We would be open to trying it again sometime in the future.
