Elly's was a great place to visit while I was in Bend! I visited late on a Saturday evening, and given the line, I could tell this was a popular destination. I appreciated the friendly service, and I sampled a few different ice creams to get a sense of what was on offer. They also have soft serve if that's more your speed. I ended up ordering a vanilla milkshake, which had a great texture (thick yet smooth) and flavor. I liked my treat so much, I hoped I could visit again before I left town! Tucked inside The Grove food hall on Bend's west side near Northwest Crossing, it is a destination visit to buy Elly's Ice cream. Alas, our experience was that while there are several reasons to have The Grove on destination list, Elly's is not one of them. The ice cream is, in Central Oregon speak (I lived there for nearly 20 years) "spendy" and while I am very happy to pay for excellent product that is locally made (I'm talkin' to you Bonta Gelato https://www.yelp.com/biz/bont%C3%A0-natural-artisan-gelato-bend-3 ) the Elly's we tried was pretty unremarkable for texture and flavor. This is supposedly a super premium ice cream made for them by a Seattle maker, per the girls at the counter, and the shop carries the first name of the wife of the husband wife local owners so I'm sure there is pride in the product. I go out of my way to support "mom n pop shops" but if this is the outcome, as I heard in owner interview, of extensive travel to taste the very best ice cream to have these custom made...well, boy howdy...I'm perplexed. Different strokes for different taste buds. I am reluctant to post a "just so so" comment for local owned business but were I thinking I was going to brave the lousy parking near The Grove (small lot, overflow is on neighborhood streets and can be a bit of hike to get here) just to try this ice cream I'd want to know in advance. As for the service at this counter, there were four friendly young women who were having a good time together and managing to do the work of two people. And the entire counter / shop space looked like it could use a once over to spruce up. It was decent, but nothing extra ordinary. Probably would have been better with chocolate. The reason I'm going with 3 stars is because of my wife's sundae. She got the Mornin Sunshine. The description reads "fresh fruit". It was clearly frozen strawberries in syrup. Yuck. Strike 2. After diving through the small layer of whipped cream, honey, and NOT fresh fruit... 3/4 of the cup was just plain vanilla soft serve. $10 for a cup of vanilla soft serve with minimal toppings... not worth it at all. Overall, it had potential but fell short. We didn't receive the value, flavors, or textures we were looking for. read more

Terrible service. There was a young man watching a young woman work. He never offered to help. Owner's child? Unsure. He was about the same age as the young woman. He acted as if he was superior to her and to every woman in the place. They ran out of lids for the pint I got. The young man just said he'd put some plastic wrap on it. No apology or anything. Elly's was first opening when I visited this summer. They had some really awesome options for ice cream. Their shakes were most appealing to my family. Our family loved the Peanut butter bomb and the Cookie crumble. If there is a line, it might take a little while to get your order but it's way worth the wait. It pains me to write a bad review about an ice cream shop. They should all be happy and joyful! I ordered the seasonal ice cream (off the board) and it turned out to be sorbet. When I went to explain my confusion and seek a scoop of actual ice cream, I was treated rudely. When I suggested they add a note to the seasonal board (signaling that the flavor is not ice cream - to avoid any future confusion), I got shot a "really lady (?)" face. Also, I paid for my replacement scoop, and even though I wasn't asking for a free replacement scoop, had I worked here I would've comped it...because I would've given grace to the customer for MY confusing signage!
