The person at the register had a really impatient vibe, like "hurry up and get your order in before we close" I asked for a sandwich without one ingredient I don't like. Service was great. But the goods were overbaked. All the goods I saw from the counter had brown color on the top and sides. This is a classic sign of overbaking. Plus, we tried the chocolate and cream cheese(?) on puff pastry dough, cinnamon pull aparts, bread sticks, hazelnut and ginger cookies and rosemary rolls. All had dryness around the edges. For reference, I worked the oven in a small bakery for seven years. Most small bakers are overly concerned about underbaking the center of their product. To compensate for thus fear they overbake. What they should be doing is turning the heat down and baking longer. Every oven is different. Experiment until you get it perfect and then do not vary. The top should be golden. read more

I've had a neighbor/friend rave about Village Baker for years, but I just hadn't gotten around to trying it out. That changed yesterday when we were looking for a new sando place to try out. I went with the Turkey-Bacon sandwich and it was pretty damn tasty. You can see from the pics, the toppings are really generous. The sandwich by itself was a full meal, without feeling stuffed. In fact, one of the guys took half of his home for later. As you would hope, the bread has a great texture, soft in the middle, with a nice tug on the crust. The standout for me was the Garlic Mayo! Picked up some breakfast pastries, coffee drinks and a couple items to bring to a dinner party for dessert later. The pastries were nice- a chocolate croissant that was nice and flaky without being crisp, and a blueberry lemon scone. It was tasty but not really lemon flavored. The blueberries were fresh and it was a good texture. The espresso drinks were quite nice and I even enjoyed the almond milk which is usually not my top alternative milk flavor. The dessert items were the chocolate cream cheese pastry and apple tart. They traveled well and everyone enjoyed both. They also had some tarts you could take home and bake and a few other refrigerated items that would be fun to try. Having lived in Europe I find most bread in America barely passable, but Bend has a few bakeries that make a valiant effort. TVB is the best I've found in Bend for traditionally baked / hand loved bread and bread that doesn't suck. I haven't tried their pastries but they look good. I'm not a fan of sparrow and find Jackson corners just ok. Same with Midtown market, but their bagels are better than BigO and Daves (though still a heart break for this NYer). I LOVE that TVB does a Norwegian bread, even if I never had bread like that In Scandinavia. Overall, the breads are not copies of what I'm used to eating abroad--they are more like cousins, but they are crusty, fresh, hearty, and not pathetic American "bread" -- stop for a loaf and get a taste of what you're missing everywhere else. read more

The striata is the tits. Crusty on the outside but soft and pillowy inside. The poppy seeds make the bread. Recommend dipping in pesto--it's heaven. Also, I'm not a huge chocolate lover but per the recommendation of the employee helping me, I got the chocolate eddy and it did not disappoint. A great bakery in Bend with a wide selection of breads and pastries. 5 stars - Shortbread: toasted coconut, candied ginger, poppy seed and lemon, peanut butter, and gluten-free chocolate hazelnut. Five types of shortbread. So good. They sell them by piece or by the dozen. I'm a fan. More crispy than crumbly. Which I like. And the flavors are not too dominant. It's still the neutral taste of a buttery and not-so-sweet shortbread. 4 stars - Rosemary pandura. The rosemary adds a great herby taste to the bread. The pandura is more of a chewy bread and not dense. This would be good dipped in some olive oil and balsamic! I would stop by here again. It's a good place to find a sweet treat! read more

First time visiting this bakery but it won't be the last! My husband had a blueberry and lemon scone, which he said was delicious, while I had the "Chocolate Eddy", which was essentially a galette with a chocolate center. The chocolate was not overly sweet and the dough was perfect; little crunch on the outside, nice and tender inside. We ate our treats outside and as soon as I finished, I went back inside and purchased two more chocolate eddy pastries to go (along with a peanut butter shortbread, which also delicious). We've been customers of Village Baker for more than a dozen years, enjoying their remarkable artisan breads and pastries. We said "yahoo" a few years back when they added bagels to the mix - big, chewy bagels that make a native New Yorker like my husband very happy. Village Baker arguably makes the best sandwiches in Bend. The key to great sandwiches is great bread, so they start with that and add all other fresh quality ingredients. Soups are wonderful, in particular the house creamy tomato specialty. Salads are among the freshest in Bend and the dressings are housemade and just right for balance of seasonings. Don't miss the corn rye bread when it's available, Black Butte Porter, wheat Levain and all of the rest are wonderful. But Village Baker probably best known for their remarkable Ciabatta and Striatta. Challah Is available as Friday special. Their cinnamon pecan raisin bread is a periodic offering. And the relatively new addition is the Parmesan black pepper "bread stick" that is absolutely addicting. Pastries are luscious; lovely crumb and sweet enough but not too much. Try the pecan schnecken or cardamom brioche or the caramel apple tart.. On Wednesdays and Fridays (Farmers Market days) in summer months they make galettes, filled with seasonal fruit. The crust is so perfectly buttery tender and crust and fruit are all sweetened just right but not too much. Were we rating for top quality product and friendly staff, we would provide five stars. But the limitations of space both inside and out at this location lead us to four. It is very tight quarters but there really is nothing that can be done about that. If you plan to eat in, seating in and out is very limited and good to now before you go. The same wonderful breads and all other items are available on the east side of Bend in Village Baker's store there called The East Village. For those who find the original west side location a little tough to get into for parking, limited seating space or access for people with disabilities, you might want to visit the larger East Village store. read more

I'll keep this short, but I just wanted to say I have yet to try something from here that I do not like. A few highlights for me: - Chocolate Eddy: The center was lightly sweet and borderline brownie-like, which is a mixture of cream cheese and Callebaut chocolate. The chocolate wasn't too rich or fudgy and the slight tang from the cream cheese paired so well with that magical crust. - L'Orangette: Yum! Imagine a buttery, flaky, and lightly dense croissant that has been filled and rolled with candied orange sugar and poppy seeds. The orange perfumes every bite and the poppy seeds lend a pleasant fruit note. The sugar is caramelized, sweet, sticky, and very addicting. - Marionberry Galette: Whole, ripe, and juicy marionberries were showcased very well and wrapped in a hearty pie crust. Oh and guess what.. YOU CAN PURCHASE THIS FROZE TO BAKE FRESH AT HOME! OVERALL: Wow, I LOVE this place! This is a bakery with a few tables on the side -- and which, yes, is the same general floor plan just like Sparrow or other bakeries. Solid wooden chairs and a green interior give it a clean atmosphere. Due to that more modern (perhaps 1980s?) decorating angle, it appears slightly less hospitable, or that I-am-at-a-cool-bourgeouis-café feeling for sitting down and enjoying your purchase. Just like the other times I visited, the kind, patient and knowledgeable staff allowed me several different samples of their breads. Their wheat version without a sour dough base does have that peculiar tangy aftertaste, which being brought up in the Netherlands with yeast based breads, tastes strange to me. I actually ended up buying a way more expensive loaf with a sour dough base, but with lots of lovely sunflower seeds. But may I make one small note here? We have been customers with the Village Baker since 2011. The breads are often served at local restaurants and can also be purchased from Newport Market. The breads are always crispy but the sandwiches is where the restaurant shines. All of the sandwiches are made using baked breads and fresh veggies and meats. Some of our favorites include the Tuna, egg salad and Another Turkey. The sandwiches are very hearty and will satisfy even larger, slightly overweight men like myself lol! The soups are fantastic and can be purchased cold or ready to eat. I highly recommend tomato. The pastries are to die for but a little on the pricey side. The Apple Carmel tarts are 4.99 but absolutely amazing. This is definitely our go to picnic lunch pickup spot. If you want to try one of the best sandwiches in town check them out. read more
