sparrow bakery in bend is operating at a level that doesn't fully make sense this is S tier. not "good bakery" not "great local spot." this is top of the system everyone talks about the ocean roll and yeah... correct. cardamom, sugar, whatever else is happening in there--it works. you take a bite and immediately understand why people bring it up like it's a shared reference point but the real thing is everything else all the small moves. the way the line flows. the timing. how orders land. how people are acknowledged without slowing anything down. it's a bunch of tiny decisions stacked perfectly and no one even notices because it feels natural morning crowd is serious. you'll see deals happening. laptops open but not in an annoying way. people choosing this place on purpose and it's busy. consistently. like if you're trying to figure out if something is good just look at the door situation. it tells you everything honestly the only concern is the pricing feels too reasonable for what they're doing. like i almost want to step in and say guys you might be underestimating yourselves but maybe that's part of it elite spot. bend is lucky this exists read more

I love this bakery and always stop into one of their retail stores or pick up some goodies at any local grocery store that carries their things. The Ocean Roll is a great "bun" and tastes like nothing else. I think it's the cardamom? I'll take it home and warm it back up in the oven for a delicious treat. Heard about their famous ocean rolls and stopped to get some for our mini roadtrip. The space is bright and inviting with plenty of seats. Easy street parking. Ordered ham & cheese roll, ocean roll and a lemon twist. The savory roll was quite tasty especially when warmed. The lemon twist was surprisingly moist. What I was really looking forward to trying was the World Famous Ocean Roll. This roll has quite the reputation of being a baked delight. It is made with vanilla cardamom sugar rolled into a croissant. I think it The roll definitely lived up to the hype with its unique flavor and was delicious. We also tried the Waldorf - Chicken sandwich which was fresh tasting on a hand rolled croissant. No drinks except for orange juice as we were heading to hike. Was visiting Bend for the weekend and came across this sweet little bakery! It's walk-up/counter service and then you grab a table after you order. Was there on a chilly winter day and the line extends outside when busy (I have a feeling it's always busy) so dress warm and be ready for a line! They have breakfast food and pastry options. I got the "non-bacon breakfast sandwich" which was egg, avocado, melted cheese, and arugula (I asked for it with no aioli) on a house made croissant. It was so good! I also had the chai with oat milk and it was also delicious with a wonderfully cinnamon flavor. I got a banana loaf to go for a little snack later and as with everything else it did not disappoint! We stumbled upon Sparrow Bakery when venturing around Bend. I was told their ocean roll was unique and great if you like cardamom. When we got there around lunch they had already sold out. Side note: we walked across to west coast provisions and they had one last ocean roll which they mentioned was brought in that morning. I was excited to try it and it was interesting but not as sweet as a cinnamon roll. I found the bakery to be so big and bright which was great for pictures and enjoying the beautiful Bend weather. I got the pavlova to try because it is such a beautiful dessert that I can't seem to find at home nor want to make without trying it first. The pavlova was tart, sweet, and very delicious. I wish there was more lemon curd in there. I also tried a cookie and a ham/cheese croissant. The croissant was buttery and flakey with the cheese providing such great richness. The cashier wasn't very knowledgeable to the ingredients in the pastries for someone with a nut allergy. The employees seem like one big family! I could feel their warmth while I was in line. I waited a long time (30 min) in line to get to go pastries. I didn't mind because I know the pastries are good, but I wish they had an express lane for pastries (they have an express room to the right of the bakery but it seems like it was just for quick sit down dining). This is worth whatever wait you encounter! At 8:45am on Monday morning we walked into a long line and I was ready to bolt but we waited it out and was so glad I did. It went super fast despite some idiots waiting until they got to the cashier to figure what the options are. Lordie people. We had the ham and Gruyère croissant sandwich, which is 100 stars on its own. Coffee, a cinnamon pull apart, a blueberry scone, everything bagel with cream cheese and a cappuccino. Every was delicious, fresh, and well worth the wait. Tables seem to turn fast and the coffee can take a bit but if you aren't in a rush, it's no big deal. They have a refrigerated case full of colorful and fancy dessert and lots of baked goods. People were buying things to take home as well as eat in the restaurant. Next door is a walk up window for coffee and treats. Love the vibe here too, it's fun and well organized to seat from 1 to 8 people. Stopped by The Sparrow Bakery for breakfast and tried the breakfast sandwich. It was really good, with fresh avocado and all the other fixings, and the croissant bread was fluffy and fresh. The coffee was also good. Our only note is that the food took about 25 minutes to come out, and the price was a bit high, but the quality made it worth it. We got lucky - around 9:30am on a Friday, the line was short. I also ordered an iced vanilla latte, which wasn't too good. It was quite watery - either the ratio of milk to espresso was off, or it was only a single shot of espresso. On our last morning in Bend before heading home, we made our way to The Sparrow Bakery. We arrived a little bit later than I would have liked and the line to be seated was out the door. Rather than waiting in line, I decided to place an order online for takeout. While we waited for our order to be ready, my husband and I enjoyed walking around and checking out the shops nearby. All of that aside, we ordered the infamous ocean roll as well as one Croque Madame and one breakfast croissant. The ocean roll was delicious with perfect level of sweetness. The Croque Madame was decadent and rich, very filling. And my husband thoroughly enjoyed the breakfast croissant with its buttery and flaky pastry, the crispy bacon, and fresh avocado. I appreciate that they have the option to order to-go in a separate area from those patrons wishing to be seated. It definitely helped to expedite the process and sent us on our way. read more

I have eaten here several times and the food is very tasty But I'm my worst experience I ordered a latte and a ham cheese croissant to go and it took 45 minutes. They gave away my order to somebody else and when I asked about it after a half hour they didn't apologize that didn't explain what was going on. Then when they finally gave me my order after 45 minutes, they didn't apologize, they didn't acknowledge that anything at all it happened they just handed me my food and said "here you go". I understand things happen but acknowledging a mistake when you make one for a paying customer is the least you can do and they failed to do that So if you don't mind waiting a very long time for very expensive food that tastes good and getting very bad service then by all means keep patronizing this establishment. Take your break when the line is gone (no one behind me). When the cashier was finally ready to take my order there was no eye contact, smile or greeting. No indication of "I'm here for you!" Don't just go through the motions, engage with your customer. In addition, the bathroom needed attention - out of toilet paper, full trash can and paper on the floor. Service: nonexistent, the grips that check you out are very nice, but it's like they are scared to ask customers who is next which made the line seem to take longer. Something better would help. I truly appreciate the team at Sparrow; the staff is kind, professional, and empathetic. However, as an out-of-towner who can't easily return to resolve issues, I'm sharing this to help management improve. My $76.35 tab included a missing $6.25 carrot cake. The store was not busy at the time so that cannot be a reasonable excuse for the oversight. For the duration of my order, two people were in the store. Then a second party of two came in behind me. No person was seated at any table. All chairs were empty. Two customer groups, 4 people in the store. More frustrating was the smushed $17 Bacon & Egg Croissants. Putting the somewhat delicate croissant sandwiches in paper sleeves (commonly used and more suitable for baked goods) was not a good decision. Placing those delicate croissant sandwiches into the larger brown shopping bag with four other baked goods (the fifth would have been the carrot cake) and a sandwich box, created sufficient compression on the sides of every paper sleeved item, resulting in the croissant sandwiches being somewhat smushed. The croissant was removed from the bag (to eat it) within 3 to 5 min after the server put it in the paper tote bag. It's not like we went hiking and then discovered the compacted sandwiches later. Of the food items, only the lox bagel survived packing because it was properly boxed and protected. Imagine that. The food quality and quantity didn't justify the "premium" price. The croissant sandwiches were particularly skimpy on filling although the bacon was dominate in volume but not high quality meat. I'll give you a star for adequate avocado but considering the sandwich's condition, I was not able to determine if the avocado was a intended to be a spread or sliced sections. Sparrow needs to either increase the food quality/quantity or lower the price to stop shortchanging customers. I have fond memories of the Scott St. location, but based on this experience, future cash flows into the NW Crossing location have become uncertain. read more

I've been here three times now and make it a point to go every time I visit Bend. Today I went with my partner and his dad. We got there around 11am and the line wasn't too big. We were able to get a table pretty easily after ordering. We got four ocean rolls, three croissants, a strawberry crumble tart, a quiche, a non-bacon breakfast sandwich, and a monte cristo. The baked goods were taken home to share with the rest of my partner's family. The food we ate here was, as always, absolutely delicious. The sandwich is my favorite thing and I think about it often. The people working here are so lovely and love their jobs. They are super efficient and deal with the chaos with such grace. The restaurant is super cozy and clean even during peak times. There's a single small bathroom that is also clean. There's a parking lot behind the building and street parking. There is seating outside as well, and a separate to-go window if you don't want to sit down. They serve Stumptown Coffee and the Barista does knock it out of the park every time (I'm a Coffee Roaster by trade and have been in Coffee for 25 years so that should speak volumes). The staff is always friendly and helpful and this morning was just yet another great experience and a series of over a dozen great experiences. Have loved this place for years, but the life span has apparently run its course here. I tried to order the famous Ocean Roll, but was told they were sold out. Then the people two spots behind me in line throw a fit and mysteriously 6 Ocean Rolls appear from the kitchen. But that's not the end. We ordered a hot Matcha latte, wait 20 minutes, and found chunks of unprocessed matcha powder floating throughout. The food arrived, 48 minutes after ordering, the breakfast sandwich was the third monstrosity to arrive. The bacon was burnt black, the aoli was a joke and there was enough arugula to feed an army of rabbits. Then there is the croque. Essentially on Wonder Bread. Uncooked Safeway ham and burnt black cheese meet enough mustard to cover an Octoberfest. RIP Sparrow, we won't be back. read more

My friend had great things to say about Sparrow Bakery, and I visited this location before I ended my trip at Bend. Based on the line, I could tell this was a popular morning spot, and I was impressed that so many people would visit during a weekday morning. I appreciated how the employee taking my order answered menu questions, and there was both indoor and outdoor seating available. I ordered the bacon breakfast sandwich, which I thought was fine: I liked the croissant but thought that the amount of egg and bacon was overwhelmed by the amount of arugula and avocado. I know that their Ocean Roll is very popular, and I'm a sucker for a pastry that includes cardamom.
