The Hat is near and dear to my heart. It was my first job when I was 14 years old back in the day! I worked at the original one in Alhambra on the corner of Valley & Garfield in Alhambra where I grew up. My family still lives in Alhambra and still frequent The Hat often so when they come to visit me in Ontario we always go to the one in Upland. My Momma loves a good pastrami sandwich, and so do I! So today Mom and Dad were visiting and here we are! Is it great? You betcha! Nevahhhhh disappoints! After all....they've been doing pastrami sandwiches for over 65 years! Honestly....I've been here easily a couple hundred times and every time is pure satisfaction. Here's why: *Pastrami: it's unlike any pastrami you'll have. It's tender. It's juicy. It's savory. It's packed with tons of flavor and they pile that pastrami on. No stinginess here my friends. I like mine on rye bread with mustard and pickles and au jus on the side. But you can order it on a French roll. Extra pickles? No problem. I always ask for a container on the side and they give me tons. The au jus is super rich and tasty. I advise getting it on the side so you can dunk each bite and savor that rich flavor. Just damn yummy! *Potato Salad: I'm going to admit it's not my favorite. I'm a potato salad snob. It's one of my favorite foods. But for fast food potato salad it will pass. It's super creamy. Has a sweet lush balanced taste that I love to counterbalance the pastrami. *Efficiency: I wanted to bring this point up because in all my years coming here they have never gotten my order wrong. Everything is always fresh hot and ON POINT. There's truly a reason they've been in business over 65 years! *Safety: All employees had masks on and everyone is friendly. I love that they have yellow chili peppers to nosh on with your pastrami. And they have tons of condiments....including relish and horseradish. And they always give me plenty. I didn't get French fries today but when you do they fill up the bag for you. And they're delish. It was a truly enjoyable sandwich today! The Hat has a couple locations in southern CA. I have been to multiple locations and they are good at keeping the quality the same across the board. The Hat is mostly known for their pastrami sandwiches and pastrami burgers. They also have awesome chili fries. Pretty much everything here is good. Not a place to eat if you are on a diet or looking for vegetarian options. This location has a big parking lot and drive through. They also sell T-shirts and gift cards. After watching an Instagram reel about how The Hat is the best chili cheese fries in California, I quickly made my way over to one. Luckily, I was within 10 minutes of one and decided to treat myself. I consulted my friend and The Hat enthusiast Chris about what to order. "Their pastrami dip is pretty decent... I always get chili cheese fries with pastrami on top and a side of gravy...Their onion rings are pretty good" Because I'm a bad listener and have shitty memory, I did not get exactly his suggestions. I ordered a pastrami sandwich and chili cheese fries. The pastrami sandwich was so good, but I definitely wish I got the dip with it. The chili cheese fries were good, but I wish there was more salt as the fries that were drowned under the chili didn't seem to soak enough flavor from it. I will definitely be back for the pastrami and will maybe actually try one of the combinations that my good friend Chris suggested and loves. read more

The worst thing to me is great food with bad customer service. I ordered chili cheese pastrami fries. I got home to no pastrami. I went back and they charged me for the pastrami and wouldn't remake my food only offered me a side of pastrami. When asked for fresh food because I drove home and my food was beginning to get soggy I was told that wasn't going to happen. I wasn't issued a refund or anything. This isn't my first non favorable experience but I thought maybe it was just an off day but get the last couple of years this has been how it's gone it's unfortunate. read more

I was craving for some onion rings and my co workers have recommended this place to me. I ordered the large size onion rings with tuna sandwich while my husband ordered the roast beef sandwich. The tuna sandwich was delicious and a decent size. Also, it wasn't very expensive. The onion rings was crispy and yummy with ketchup and ranch. I would definitely come here again and try other items on the menu. If you haven't been here, you should give it a try. The staff were friendly and there is tons of parking spaces. read more

I have so many nostalgic memories at The Hat. I have been here with my family, close friends and even a few former paramours. Growing up in Upland, this was one of the only things we have going for us... and probably one of the only decent spots to eat at late hours. My go-to item to share is the Chili Fries ($6.99). It is HUGE!! I would say it could feed 4 people. If you group is feeling extra hungry or the need for protein, you can also Add Pastrami ($?). The fries are crispy for the pieces on the edge and softer towards the center where they are smothered with chili and cheese. If you choose at add the pastrami it adds a salty meaty element to each bite. If you happen to be alone, and that Chili Fries is too epic, any pastrami or chili product has my endorsement. Such as the Pastrami Burger ($9.99) or Chili Dog ($4.39). Definitely not a healthy meal, but a great place for late night or drunk munchies. There's a reason The Hat has been in business for more than half a century, its amazing. Anytime I am visiting California we stop and get some delicious pastrami's. It's not a East coast style pastrami sandwich. It's all Californian! One sandwich is plenty for two and if you want fries, one order is plenty for four or five. You can also order fries with gravy, or chili cheese or perhaps you could go cray and have the pastrami fries. They have other items on the menu but honestly I have never made it past the pastrami sandwich. They seem pricey but after you taste the savory sandwich it's worth it! The restaurant is clean and so are the restrooms. There is always plenty of staff in the kitchen getting your order cooked to order and out out to you. At the register taking your order I always seem to get the same gentleman. He is always friendly and in a great mood making you feel welcome. Looking forward to next California visit. read more

This is the second time we have tried to eat here . First time I unwrapped my sandwich to find a fly we called and got told to come back for a remake. I was so grossed out I didn't want a remake but that's all they offered. The pastrami burger is my favorite item from this place. It's massive! It's filling! And since it's not doing any favors to my cholesterol, I only try to get one once or twice a year. The service is also prompt at the registers and I like to watch the workers make the food. The location is normally busy but there is always a clean booth to sit down and eat. Wow what a major disappointment this was . Late Sunday night 11pm Pastrami sandwich and Chili Cheese dog. Way to much cheese and the onions were sliced way to big. Now the real mess the Pastrami was the greasiest sandwich I have ever gotten grease dripping onto the paper they wrap it in it wasn't the dip it was grease because it felt slimy and gross the bread was uneatable because of all the grease it was a big ball of dough. Whoooaaaa... I haven't been to the Hat for years, and suddenly I show up at the City of Upland location. Yep, came here with another friend during the day at around 2pm when it wasn't so crowded. I'm not sure how long this location has been around, but it's visually on the newer side. We saw pictures of the original Alhambra location and also the Downtown Los Angeles location that was taken many years ago. The Hat has a lot of memories indeed since its inception. The food here is delicious! We had the Pastrami, the Roast Beef Dip, and an order of Chili Fries. Very tasty and satisfying as it hit the spot. Everything was freshly made, and it came out faster than I thought. I was quite impressed by their speed. The Pastrami and the Roast Beef Dip was cut in half (by request) so I could try both. Not the most healthy meal along with its chili fries, but again it was wonderful! Just eat and don't think. Lol. They proportions are huge. Both sandwiches and the chili fries costed $30.00, which is about average for two people anywhere. Plenty of parking during the time we went. A very clean eatery, and the employees are friendly. If you live pastrami, this is the place! My husband and I shared the chili cheese fries this time. It was hot, the cheese was gooey and melted to perfection. The chili is perfectly spiced and not overly greasy. The fries are still crunchy when served and slowly soak up the goodness. We cannot finish the serving. It can probably feed four. This place brings back so many childhood memories for me. I started visiting the original hat in Alhambra as a small kid back in the early 80's (guess my age?) and the nostalgia of an original burger stand still holds true at most of these chain locations. Each time I go, it's pretty much the same order. Pastrami cut in half extra pickles (because I can't finish it at one sitting) , small fries (which is always enough to share) & a Root Beer ( I know Soda isn't idea but man, it tastes so good with this greasy goodness!)
