10/9/2022 The Hat 857 N. Central Ave. Upland, CA 91786 My nephew was returning from a Home Depot run and called to ask me what I wanted for lunch. Since The Hat was on the way, I had him get me the Pastrami Dip. It consisted of copious amounts of lean Pastrami topped with sliced pickles between Au Jus soaked roll type sandwich buns for 12 bucks. This place is a mini-chain east of LA in the 10 Freeway corridor and has been around a long time. I last had one of these about 3 decades ago at a different location. The main feature of the sandwich this time was the high level of saltiness, so much so that the pickles tasted bland. Maybe 30 years ago I was more used to the unhealthy sodium content since currently I have reduced my salt intake substantially. The sandwich was a good value, however I will not order the Pastrami again based on the saltiness. Folks with hypertension, like me, beware. There are other selections that may not be so salty. read more

We've been here several times . We dropped by after coming home late from Oogie Boogie bash and my fiancé and I used to come by all the time when we lived in SoCal but this time it seemed different. Maybe I over glorified it back then but having it this time, I thought it was just okay. We ordered the pastrami chili cheese fries and while the pastrami was good, the chili was okay, like it was just sauce and not much "chili" and the fries we a tad hard. The Hat has been on my bookmark list for quite some time. Not this particular location, but when I saw that one was in the area, I removed whatever city the other bookmark was and added Upland. As soon as you walk in, you immediately get team vibes behind a long counter where they all have their areas of focus. Family-like vibes. All of the employees worked closely together and understood each other's muffles under COVID-19 masks (11/17/20). I didn't know it then, but The Hat's working environment during this whole pandemic mess strangely reminds me of the message that Glenn Close's character said in "Hillbilly Elegy." Maybe they work together so well "'cause family's the only thing that means a goddamn." I stood there watching them and told my elementary-aged girls to do the same. But unfortunately they started fighting because they were so hungry. Lol. So for $35.48, you could have the following: + large fries + 3 Orange Bangs + a cheeseburger + a hot dog + a famous pastrami sammy The girls and I all drooled over the pastrami... I mean there was so much of it that we really didn't have to fight over it. Same with the "meh" fries. Yeah, meh. They were not the hot and fresh type that we hoped for. One daughter enjoyed her burger and had very little left over. The other girl didn't enjoy her hot dog so much. There is plenty of parking. A drive-thru. The indoor dining area is closed, but the restrooms are open if you plan to eat outside. I loooooove this place! I'm a huge pastrami fan so I can't think of a better place to indulge my desires! The Pastrami dip sandwich is on a fresh and soft hoagie roll...loaded with meat and pickles and mustard. I skip the pickles and mustard and add onion and Mayo. You do you! I do it like that. It is always always hot and fresh! Usually, I am the only girl in here and the restaurants always full of men. But today there were women in front of me and women behind me and another group of women walked in right after that. So I guess we are starting to figure out that pastrami sandwiches are for girls too. sounds like a funny commentary but just my observations over the past few years. If you get fries or onion rings just know that it's enough for two people. Maybe even three. My son loves the gravy fries. And I just watched a Family devour the chili fries. I've been here tons of times and it's normally always great. Tonight I came in and ordered a pastrami burger with extra cheese and avocado. Extra charge of 1.60 for avocado and 1.99 for cheese. Already ridiculous but then I didn't get either. Burger was beyond burnt. Hate to rate this place low. They are usually amazing. read more

Did love the chili cheese fries, get both pickles and tomatoes! They're massive so bring an appetite for two or another person. Now onto the pastrami - I got the classic and was disappointed. The bun was plain, dry, and untoasted. The pastrami had good flavor but super fatty. This was my first time at The Hat, I've heard about it and their World famous pastrami for awhile now. When I tell you that GREAT customer service makes all the difference in the overall experience of a restaurant for me, I'm not lying. I placed a phone order for 17 people who were waiting to enjoy "Pastrami in the Park" at noon. I had the good fortune to speak with a very chipper and helpful employee named Jessie. She went over my varied order twice to make certain it was correct. I mentioned that I would be taking the order to the park and she quickly added "Ok, well I'll make sure to pack plenty of condiments, yelliw chilies, paper plates and napkins. Everything will be hot and ready for you at 11:30am!" When we arrived, we stepped to the counter, Jessie heard me tell another employee that I was there for a large phone order, she came right over and said that everything was being packed up and would be ready in 5 minutes.
