Service and food were fantastic! Had the focaccia bread which was quite flavorful. Then had the crab cakes which were delightful. They came with a red pepper cilantro aioli with some arugula. They were cooked perfectly and full of lump crab. Lastly, we each had fried chicken. Had the fried chicken basket and my partner had the friend chicken plate. The chicken had a great crunch and was tender. Our server was sweet and friendly. Overall a great experience and would definitely return. Ended up returning twice! Had the crab cakes again burrata. We were staying in Vashon for a wedding and our Air BNB hosts suggested we come to this spot for breakfast, lunch, and/or dinner. So glad we did! We had five people in our party and the wait was only 20-30 minutes so we shopped around while we waiting. The restaurant was clean, super cute and full of character, and our booth was so comfortable. I liked the higher ceilings, local art... Everything was very fairly priced and the food was *excellent*. Everyone enjoyed what they ordered - a grain salad, fish and chips, house salad, sweet potato fries, burgers, a breakfast meal, coffee, etc. Service was good, not great. Our server was busy and not very attentive to us/ seemed annoyed when we were ordering and would add other things to the order. Couldn't find her to flag her down, so got more tartar sauce/an extra fork on our own. Not a big deal, but that's why the 4 stars. I went here with my family during Mother's Day weekend and forgot to review. We forgot to make a reservation but got in within the hour. First of all our server was amazing and nothing was too much trouble for her (long blonde hair). We loved the salads and truffle fries and the desserts were amazing. We used to love visiting The Hardware Store! We visited twice a week if not more and it was wonderful. But, yuck! $20 for frozen fish? Their burger used to be AMAZING but now they serve frozen patties for $16!?! It was fun to have a night out with good food before. My friend and I came here for lunch and can't say we'd be back. The moment we stepped inside we felt uneasy about the place. When we walked in we assumed that we needed to wait to be seated, so as we were looking around for staff, but the three employees who spotted us from different areas of the restaurant never came up to us, and just went along with whatever they were doing. With that said, we just assumed that we seat ourselves and walked over to a nearby table because we were standing in front of the restaurant longer than should've been. So as we were seating ourselves, of course an employee comes over and my friend asks if we're allowed to sit here because no one came up to us and the server says, "We're supposed to seat you, but that's fine." She gave us our menus and placed two water glasses at the table and quickly left, as our server came to take over. For food my friend ordered the House Signature Burger and I ordered the Fish Tacos with Fries. Once our food arrived our server asked if we needed anything else and at the time we didn't. That was the last time we saw her until we had to track her down for the check. And the food was not good. My friend's burger was overcooked, bland and she did not taste any garlic aioli as the menu described. Unfortunately, I had a similar experience with my fish tacos as they were super bland, even with the crema on them. It tasted like the fish and the batter weren't seasoned at all and the tortillas were more on the stale side, as they didn't seem to be warmed up. We both agreed that we were glad we had our fries to fill us up, as they were decent, fortunately. I would've ordered another beer had our server checked in with us, or asked for a refill on water, or asked for an aioli for the fries, etc...but we decided to jet outta this place as soon as we were finished and check out what more of the island offered. Every Google search and trip advisory will tell you to eat here for its historic charm and all-American food, but I wouldn't recommend it. Unfriendly service and bland food. read more

Grew up on Vashon and very much remember when this was an actual hardware store (Today's special, so is tomorrow). And then it became the restaurant. There are only a few options for breakfast on the island. This has generally been the hot spot for islanders and tourists alike. I have generally been pretty favorable of the place. Enjoy the open space, atmosphere, service and certainly the food. However, I returned this morning with my folks after a years away, and I have to say I was somewhat disappointed. We got there right at 9 when they opened, and the music was wayyyy too loud -- I couldn't even carry on a conversation with my parents let alone concentrate on anything else. They did finally turn it down a bit, but it was still a distraction. We generally felt rushed, even though it didn't seem to be very busy. The food was pretty much the only part I did enjoy throughout the hour we were there. I almost always get the Vashon Breakfast, and I wasn't disappointed with it this time. As I was just finishing my last bite, the hostess quickly grabbed my plate in haste, as my dad was still finishing his meal. Maybe she's new and just didn't really know to give us a little more time. I was looking forward to giving this place a try again after some time away, but I doubt I or we'll be back anytime soon, if ever. Sporty's a few doors down has always been a good backup and will most likely get more of our business in the future. read more

The Hardware Store is one of my favorite places to visit when i'm on Vashon, it's almost like 'coming home' the people are always friendly, and when it's just me dining alone or with a friend, it's easy to walk in, there's a table by their fireplace I love to sit at, I can read while I wait for my food, and enjoy a glass of wine that is extremely reasonably priced, I have a regular server, Christopher, who is a complete treasure!! always friendly, remembers the wine I drink, and has it on the table as I sit down, (that is service!) and usually guides me to whatever epicurean delight I will partake in, the entire experience is familial, and I love it! The menu is constantly evolving, I know they have gone through several Head Chefs, and it has not seemed to cause a hiccup to the restaurant at all, I love the fried chicken salad, it's regular selection of mine, the chicken breast is boneless, and is big enough for me to take part of it home with me! this past week, I was told about their King Salmon, it was a special for the evening, and of course worth trying something new, sweet potatoes, and asparagus, and such a perfect piece of fish, I don't recall what sauce was accompanying the fish, but it had ginger and white wine in it and it blended so well with everything on the plate, I couldn't have asked for a better entree! lately they have had this wonderful tasting menu, with all sorts of enticing appetizers, I will definitely be back to try some of these this summer!If anyone is considering coming to Vashon, you should make a point to stop in for dinner at the Hardware Store, I know I will ;) read more

Something has happened to the Hardware Store. The quality of the food is still okay the menu has become a little more limited and expensive. Breakfast is still a good deal. But the service has really ebbed. They've lost some of the better servers and the remaining crew aren't up to the task It's particularly noticeable during breakfast when typically it can take literally 10-20 minutes for a server to ask if we want coffee. We've started asking the hostesses if they can get us coffee. In some cases we've tried to order when the waiter finally comes over for the first visit only to be told we had to wait because he had other tables he hadn't gotten to yet. Another big issue is the speed the food comes out. Sometimes it's incredibly fast; under 10 minutes. Other times not so much. The last visit every table around us had our food but us. I could see that the cook working the pass was backed up and confused, which has happened with this particular cook before(owners, he needs supervision. And it's embarassing watching him yell at the waitresses)When my burger finally came out it was raw, not rare, but raw with a light sear on the outside. I complained but was hungry and ate it but was very unhappy. They did take the burger off the bill. But it's one of only a few restaurants on the island and it needs to try harder to keep being a local favorite. read more

Thoughtful in spacing patrons out by 6-ft and opening their outdoor seating spaces this pst weekend. Our burgers arrived a level under cooked so we had to get them redone- chef put absolutely no rush on the adjustment and pretty much put our order behind all of the new orders coming in. Our party was practically done their meals by the time the two of us got our burgers back. Extra star was for our server who gave us extra beverages and looked anxious that our food was not coming anytime soon. He expressed his apologies which was a nice gesture. The burgers were good once they were done correctly but the natural flavor wasn't amazing. I loved the seared halloumi and truffle fry appetizers. This was an awful experience...we ordered breakfast and asked for a side of crispy , and asked for our potatoes to be crispy we received very floppy bacon. We had a an egg over easy and it was clear. I would give them zero stars because the service was very poor but I'll give them one star because the food was good. From the moment we walked in, the bald guy behind the bar had an attitude. Overall I would return to this restaurant. The food was reasonable. Our party ordered veggie burger, pub burger, fish and chips, and a breakfast burrito. Kids shared buttered parmesan noodles. Our server did not know what beers they had on tap and had to get a manager to tell us. My son dumped a whole glass of milk on my crotch and then threw a tantrum so that influenced my experience but it's not the restaurants fault. The main problem was that they messed up our bill three times and took them darn near a half hour to fix it which caused us to miss a ferry to Southworth which cost us two and a half hours time. All in all the food was pretty good and the restaurant is clean and has a good atmosphere. It was really hot this day. No fans or AC indoors. Normally wouldn't complain but we had our infant with us. Thought inside would be cooler than outside. Kind of a wash it was hot everywhere. To their credit they did give us plenty of water and a wet cloth to try and cool the baby. I had fish and chips. Portion was really small looked like a kids meal. Under seasoned and just not all that good. Wife said the burger was good. My friends salad was the best item we experienced. Drinks were ehh. It was nice that they called me when our table was ready which meant we could visit the local Strawberry festival vendors while we waited. We ate outside (on a side patio in the shade next to a quiet street) and enjoyed good service. The hubby ordered a salad with a generous portion of steak added to it for $20. I ordered the "spicy" grilled chicken w/basil sandwich. There was zero spice but the flavor was still enjoyable due to the sweet basil. We received a gift card as a Christmas gift. So, we tried to use it around three weeks ago, and it wouldn't register to place an order. Finally we were able to talk to a real person to ask them about it. She took the number from the card an said that she could see that it was purchased but somehow it wasn't ever entered into their system. After clearing that up, we ordered two fish and chips orders, two dinner salads and a slice of key lime pie. My partner went in to pick up our Togo order and she was charged 94 Effin dollars!!! WTF??? She told them to keep the six dollars left on our 100 dollar gift card. That's part one. Part two. We get home to eat and the meal is cold, old stale fries, and extremely dried out fish. Frozen french fries with a 20$ burger? Seriously? This place has gone through a few owners and has deteriorated along the way. It went from a community hub - with live music and good atmosphere - to relying on tourists which means they don't need quality to bring people back. There are a number of smaller spots on the island - I suggest trying those instead. If you are comfortable with these prices, at least try someplace that sources from local farms and businesses (like the Ruby Brink across the street). read more

This was our first time on Vashon and after a trip to the Tacoma ferry when the Seattle ferry had a 2 hr line we were famished. There was a very small line when we got there, the hostess was very friendly. When we got to our table the waiter was slooow and minimally attentive. The bonus is that there is a team of folks helping with water and questions. The food is filling but taste is nothing special. Portions are good. So first time here had the steak frites and my friend had the clam chowder and macaroni and cheese. So on the steak frites I upgraded to truffle fries with Parmesan and man oh man the veal Demi glaze for the steak and the truffle frites were amazing. Now when it came to clam chowder it was delicious and had excellent flavor but the macaroni and cheese WoWed me the noodles are made in house from scratch and the cheese was perfect amount not too cheesy and not runny but perfect in addition for dessert there brownie came out piping hot with deliciously imported Carmel that tasted like butterscotch from France it was heavenly delicious. This is definitely my favorite spot here now and I remember when this place actually was a hardware store in 2000. read more

Not happy. They have screwed up on my order not just once, but twice. I ordered food a second time and service was just as bad. Had us waiting an additional half hour to and hour for food we made sure to phone order to get on time. When you phone order ahead to get your food on time and they give you a time when to pick up. Today is the 29 of June 2019 We are staying the weekend on Vashon Island, Washington. For breakfast we stopped by the Hardware store. It's not an actual hardware store anymore but a vibrant restaurant with beautiful art from local artists. The food here is also a work of art. We have eaten here many times and have always enjoyed the atmosphere and the food. Dave was our server today and he was great with the kids. His customer service was great, and he was very attentive to all our wishes. Today I got the open faced egg sandwich on Brioche bread. It came with perfectly cooked chorizo, thick bacon, melted cheddar and fried mozzarella, a poached egg with a delicious hollandaise sauce and served with potatoes. If your going to stop by and grab some grub I would recommend coming early, the place does fill up fast. Also remember that they are on island time so food and service are speedy they don't try and rush you out the door. read more
