Overall I would return to this restaurant. The food was reasonable. Our party ordered veggie burger, pub burger, fish and chips, and a breakfast burrito. Kids shared buttered parmesan noodles. Our server did not know what beers they had on tap and had to get a manager to tell us. My son dumped a whole glass of milk on my crotch and then threw a tantrum so that influenced my experience but it's not the restaurants fault. The main problem was that they messed up our bill three times and took them darn near a half hour to fix it which caused us to miss a ferry to Southworth which cost us two and a half hours time. All in all the food was pretty good and the restaurant is clean and has a good atmosphere. Something has happened to the Hardware Store. The quality of the food is still okay the menu has become a little more limited and expensive. Breakfast is still a good deal. But the service has really ebbed. They've lost some of the better servers and the remaining crew aren't up to the task It's particularly noticeable during breakfast when typically it can take literally 10-20 minutes for a server to ask if we want coffee. We've started asking the hostesses if they can get us coffee. In some cases we've tried to order when the waiter finally comes over for the first visit only to be told we had to wait because he had other tables he hadn't gotten to yet. Another big issue is the speed the food comes out. Sometimes it's incredibly fast; under 10 minutes. Other times not so much. The last visit every table around us had our food but us. I could see that the cook working the pass was backed up and confused, which has happened with this particular cook before(owners, he needs supervision. And it's embarassing watching him yell at the waitresses)When my burger finally came out it was raw, not rare, but raw with a light sear on the outside. I complained but was hungry and ate it but was very unhappy. They did take the burger off the bill. But it's one of only a few restaurants on the island and it needs to try harder to keep being a local favorite. read more

We waited almost 15 min for our server to arrive and then didn't see her until it was time for the bill. Thoughtful in spacing patrons out by 6-ft and opening their outdoor seating spaces this pst weekend. Our burgers arrived a level under cooked so we had to get them redone- chef put absolutely no rush on the adjustment and pretty much put our order behind all of the new orders coming in. Our party was practically done their meals by the time the two of us got our burgers back. Extra star was for our server who gave us extra beverages and looked anxious that our food was not coming anytime soon. He expressed his apologies which was a nice gesture. The burgers were good once they were done correctly but the natural flavor wasn't amazing. I loved the seared halloumi and truffle fry appetizers. I would give them zero stars because the service was very poor but I'll give them one star because the food was good. From the moment we walked in, the bald guy behind the bar had an attitude. At the table, we were ready to order and he refused to take our order until he was ready to do so. He gave me more attitude when I asked for a straw and never once said your welcome anytime we said thank you. I will not be returning simply because the service was bad. It's a shame, really. Had a really good lunch there today. Service was great and the tables were nicely spaced with doors open for maximum fresh air. Mom got the muffalata sandwich with carrot ginger soup. Both were very tasty and the sandwich was stacked with meat. I got the grains salad and it was delicious with a lot of fresh herbs, feta and not overly dressed. Where to begin? First the guy serves me cognac in a glass with unwanted ice cubes. Then he takes it out and the cognac upon return is cold. We received a gift card as a Christmas gift. So, we tried to use it around three weeks ago, and it wouldn't register to place an order. Finally we were able to talk to a real person to ask them about it. She took the number from the card an said that she could see that it was purchased but somehow it wasn't ever entered into their system. After clearing that up, we ordered two fish and chips orders, two dinner salads and a slice of key lime pie. My partner went in to pick up our Togo order and she was charged 94 Effin dollars!!! WTF??? She told them to keep the six dollars left on our 100 dollar gift card. That's part one. Part two. We get home to eat and the meal is cold, old stale fries, and extremely dried out fish. Frozen french fries with a 20$ burger? Seriously? This place has gone through a few owners and has deteriorated along the way. It went from a community hub - with live music and good atmosphere - to relying on tourists which means they don't need quality to bring people back. There are a number of smaller spots on the island - I suggest trying those instead. If you are comfortable with these prices, at least try someplace that sources from local farms and businesses (like the Ruby Brink across the street). read more

We came to Vashon island for the day. Online this place had a large menu, appealing to all. The actual menu upon arrival was much smaller. Service staff was good. Prompt and polite. It was really hot this day. No fans or AC indoors. Normally wouldn't complain but we had our infant with us. Thought inside would be cooler than outside. Kind of a wash it was hot everywhere. To their credit they did give us plenty of water and a wet cloth to try and cool the baby. I had fish and chips. Portion was really small looked like a kids meal. Under seasoned and just not all that good. Wife said the burger was good. My friends salad was the best item we experienced. Drinks were ehh. I had a Tikila, tequila lime and some kind of almond flavor. Personally wasn't my favorite. Friend order a mojito wasn't impressed. read more

So first time here had the steak frites and my friend had the clam chowder and macaroni and cheese. So on the steak frites I upgraded to truffle fries with Parmesan and man oh man the veal Demi glaze for the steak and the truffle frites were amazing. Now when it came to clam chowder it was delicious and had excellent flavor but the macaroni and cheese WoWed me the noodles are made in house from scratch and the cheese was perfect amount not too cheesy and not runny but perfect in addition for dessert there brownie came out piping hot with deliciously imported Carmel that tasted like butterscotch from France it was heavenly delicious. This is definitely my favorite spot here now and I remember when this place actually was a hardware store in 2000. read more

We ate here years ago and knew it to be good food in a central location of Vashon. It was a busy Saturday but we were sat within 20 minutes. It was nice that they called me when our table was ready which meant we could visit the local Strawberry festival vendors while we waited. We ate outside (on a side patio in the shade next to a quiet street) and enjoyed good service. The hubby ordered a salad with a generous portion of steak added to it for $20. I ordered the "spicy" grilled chicken w/basil sandwich. There was zero spice but the flavor was still enjoyable due to the sweet basil. Yesterday afternoon we sat on the outside patio for lunch. We received great prompt service for our drink and food order. We split the fish and chips and felt the fries were too salty. Not happy. They have screwed up on my order not just once, but twice. I ordered food a second time and service was just as bad. Had us waiting an additional half hour to and hour for food we made sure to phone order to get on time. When you phone order ahead to get your food on time and they give you a time when to pick up. Just to have you wait even longer. Also... We pay the extra take out fee... The food is already pricey, the service was poor and the additional fees make this place not something you would look forward to visiting again. read more

This was our first time on Vashon and after a trip to the Tacoma ferry when the Seattle ferry had a 2 hr line we were famished. There was a very small line when we got there, the hostess was very friendly. When we got to our table the waiter was slooow and minimally attentive. The bonus is that there is a team of folks helping with water and questions. The food is filling but taste is nothing special. Portions are good. This place sucks - and with so many wonderful new choices for fine dining on Island, I don't know why anyone would continue to torture their tastebuds and wallet buying this overpriced horrible food. Go to Gravy - Go to Thai - Go to Bramble - there are so many better places. The food might have tasted less like goat piss if they had let me order a drink with my legal ID, but because my license was VERTICAL (intermediate) - even after I provided another form of identification (another legal ID) - they would not serve me a beer. I was having lunch with my father - I am 22. It was ridiculous. I am posting some valuable info for the manager and owner - a guide on how to read a vertical ID. THS has hit a new stride/ I've been going here for years but my meal last night was the best ever, The food was fresh and delicious but the shining star of our experience was our server Lucas! Today is the 29 of June 2019 We are staying the weekend on Vashon Island, Washington. For breakfast we stopped by the Hardware store. It's not an actual hardware store anymore but a vibrant restaurant with beautiful art from local artists. The food here is also a work of art. We have eaten here many times and have always enjoyed the atmosphere and the food. Dave was our server today and he was great with the kids. His customer service was great, and he was very attentive to all our wishes. Today I got the open faced egg sandwich on Brioche bread. It came with perfectly cooked chorizo, thick bacon, melted cheddar and fried mozzarella, a poached egg with a delicious hollandaise sauce and served with potatoes. If your going to stop by and grab some grub I would recommend coming early, the place does fill up fast. Also remember that they are on island time so food and service are speedy they don't try and rush you out the door. read more

Poorly-operated bistro that clearly benefits from a prime location and lack of competition on Vashon. Significantly under-staffed, which means that half the tables sat with dirty dishes on them while we waited over 45 minutes. The hostess is clearly inexperienced at managing reservations, using a server's order book to take tiny notes - and getting them wrong more often than not. The place was absolutely filled with flies on a late summer afternoon. It was disgusting. We took my sister and brother in law there, they were staying with us, on the island, after an Alaska cruise. It was absolutely embarrassing! There were like twenty flies on the booth behind my sister, we had to shoo them away from the food. Most of our goto places were closed but we've mostly found the Hardware Store to be acceptable in the past. We've seen a bit of a fly problem during the summer months before but nothing like this. Waiter was a total rookie. I doubt if I'll ever return. Reason I gave them two stars is that we've found them acceptable in the past and this could have been a quirk. Although, given the fly problems we've seen before, maybe not. They have some stiff new competition in town now and maybe it is impacting their quality and service. read more

Venue is fine, service was great, and the presentation was fine, but we tried the fish and chips, and the pork katsu... we were very disappointed. Over cooked, dry, and flavorless all around. It was flavorless to the point that I couldn't even say that I wanted to wash the taste out of my mouth other than to remove the feel of grease from my mouth. Maybe it's our fault for ordering fish and a specialty dish from an American-style restaurant, but if it isn't going to be done right then it shouldn't be on the menu. Took the family (6) to dinner...seated inside. Staff wore mask. Fish and chips, burger, GF fish and chips and the hunk of lettuce swimming in Bleu Cheese dressing. Fish and chips were as good as you can get with cod, GF not so good, fries delicious as was the burger and salad. Finished the meal with a couple slices of banana cream pie. First time went with the vegan sauteed kale and spinach dish which with some added hot sauce was a nice change from the usual. The second time I went traditional and got potatoes, eggs and ham. We came in on a Sunday night with friends and were glad we made a reservation as the place was pretty busy. There doesn't seems to be to many places on the island to chose from so I recommend making a reservation as we were seated right away. Our server was very friendly and came over right away to get drinks going. We started with the Brussels sprouts and the husbands got two wedge salads both were awesome. The boys both preferred steaks from the specials menu, my friend got the steak salad and I had the salmon bowl. The steak was pretty straight forward not very thick but decent and cooked to their liking. The steak salad was excellent My salmon bowl had excellent flavor I would have loved it , however the rice was so hard and undercooked it could have broke my teeth. I didn't send it back because I felt bad and dinner took quite a while to come, but I should have said something so they didn't serve anymore like this. Could have been a five star bowl read more

The food was very good, but the service was beyond slow. I sincerely believe they forgot about us after seating us...15 minutes before waitstaff came and asked for our drink orders. Food came quickly, and the Benedict and Fried Chicken salad were excellent, but it took 25 MINUTES TO CLEAR OUR TABLE. I had to go up front to get our check, and it took 15 MINUTES TO GET THAT. I was worried that something was happening to my card because it took so long to get it back to me. When I spoke to the front desk person, she apologized and explained their lack of staff, but it seemed they managed to get checks to other tables in a timely manner. Very disappointed read more

Best items ordered, ranked best to worst: Clam Chowder- not too heavy, lots of bacon Margarita Lavosh - decent but over cooked as cheese was hard All of these were sub-par: Caesar salad: romaine was ridiculously bitter and overwhelmed any other good flavors Mac n Cheese: this is so easy to do well yet somehow missed the mark completely. Coagulated hunks of cheddar swimming in oil with over-cooked pasta. Mussels: good flavor, looked the Apple & bacon combo but waaaay too greasy without any yummy nectar broth. Fish & Chips- meh...why not use buttermilk batter from fried chicken! ? Breaded fish was bland with chewy, over cooked fries. Service- nice server but that's about it.
