Wow! This place is cool. I ordered the watercress appetizer per the recommendation of other yelpers. This was astonishing. I had no idea what to expect but it was lovely. The peanut sauce with it was so flavorful. I also had the pad see ew which was good. I played it safe with the entree but next time I will try something different. I added the second cup of peanut sauce to the pad see ew and it was great. The atmosphere of the bar was cool. It's dark and beautiful. The bartender served me water from a chilled bottle while I waited for my order (I got it to go). This place will make a fun location for a birthday, a date or girls night out. Grabbed dinner here on a Saturday night. Food was overall good. The deep fried trout appetizer was lovely, pad see ew was pretty standard and not overly sweet (and I tend to not like sweet food) like some comments have mentioned. We got the house red curry with pork. The spice level was great and the veggies were crisp and delicious. We enjoyed our cocktails too. The only item truly lacking was the tom yum soup. It honestly tasted like water infused with lime juice. No hint of all the wonderful flavors that make tom yum so delightful. Perhaps that was a bad batch. Otherwise everything was nice. According to our friend this was the best Thai place in the Seattle area and we knew we had to try it while on Vashon Island. Reservation is highly recommended on weekends. We didn't have a reservation and had to wait for about an hour for a table, we got there as soon as they opened to put our names down and then went off to explore the area while we waited for our table to be ready. We found unique items on the menu and took us a bit to decide what we wanted to try. With some suggestions from our waitress, we got Pad Thai, Gaeng Faak Thong, Grapao and Kaidao. Grapao and Kaidao was amazing, we loved the spice with green beans and chicken, and the fried egg on top. Gaeng Faak Thong was great too, we loved the taste of the curry. Pad Thai was great. Living on Vashon has its challenges, like being at the mercy of a ferry system that continues to become less and less reliable. But we're spoiled because we have the best Thai restaurant in the area. We've come here numerous times -- by ourselves, with out-of-town guests, and we've even lured local friends onto the island with the promise of incredible Thai food. And nobody has ever been disappointed. The dishes are packed with so much flavor and the service is fantastic. Came here for an early dinner so we were able to walk in. Unfortunately the young man at check in sat us at a high table top. When I asked for a shorter table, he said we'd have to wait another hour and a half, so we sucked it up and I was about to give my elderly mother a leg up. to vault onto the high chair when a manager saw what we were doing and she insisted on getting us a low table. She talked to the check in guy (hopefully to tell him that you can't endanger the elderly by making them vault onto a high chair) and then had a just emptied table cleaned for us. Thank you, manager for being mindful and seeing that a disaster was waiting to happen. Mom picked the Pad Thai and I ordered the Pad See Ew. I thought my dish was the sweetest Pad See Ew i'd ever had, but it was good. Our waitress, Calliope was very friendly and when she brought my mom's Pad thai out, she assembled it table side, explaining why each component wa there and how it functioned in the dish. We weren't expecting a show, but that felt really fancy. We also had live entertainment- a guitarist playing some light favorites. We'd heard such great things about this restaurant and they definitely lived up to the reputation. This is a beautiful restaurant with old Thai decor, wood carved walls, and romantic lighting. Service can be a little slow when orders get backed up, but the servers are very nice. The Planet Janet with vodka, butterfly pea flower tea, lemongrass syrup and lime was pretty sweet. In fact, many of the dishes were on the sweeter side, from the sauces for the spring and egg rolls, to the noodles and curry. They did have other herbs and spices, so the dishes were flavorful. They also have some great chili sauces on the side for added heat. DO TRY: Papia Phak Sot ($14.88): fresh spring rolls comes with 12 pieces - good bang for your buck. Yum Phak Boong ($14.88): flash fried Siamese watercress served with a coconut lime chili oil sauce. Very light and unique! Yum Pla Trout ($26.88): the rainbow trout was tender and fried to perfection. The mango salad that comes with it is delicious too! Just okay for me: phad Thai (although I loved how citrusy it was, noods all stuck together), phad kee mao, phad see iew, gaeng massaman (yellow curry), and kaow phad sapparod (pineapple fried rice) - I've had better elsewhere. Pass on the satay. It was over cooked and dry and the sauce didn't make up for that. Overall, not bad for the limited options of cuisines and sit-down restaurants in this town. read more

It seemed like more take-out orders were leaving the kitchen than tables getting served - Too much sugar! Everything had a sickly sweetness to it. Our meal left me feeling like I'd just spent 90 minutes eating dessert. - Cramped, dark and loud atmosphere. We were packed in so tight everyone was shouting and I had a headache when we left (probably amplified by the overly sweet food). - Small portions. The serving dishes were large but it was mostly liquid with barely enough solids to feel satisfied afterward. Spent the day on Vashon visiting my partners family. Stopped in for dinner here. Ambiance - heavy curtains are put up to keep the restaurant dark and vibey. A lot of wood with some Thai touches all over, no complaints. Food - We started with the pork satay. The Pork was a little dry but the flavor was delicious. The sauce was amazing and even the cucumber salad on the side was a nice pairing and so refreshing. My partner ordered the pad see iew. She enjoyed it but said, it was nothing special and could have been spicier. I liked it. I had the PHAD PHED GAENG DANG which is basically a spicy curry with chicken. It was delicious, could have been spicier but overall the flavor was nice. Why 2 stars? Service. Just bad. We were seated right away and came just after opening. Took a minute for our waitress to come by, but when she did we gave our drink orders and needed to review the menu more. We didn't see her for 15 minutes and when she came back she still didn't have our drinks. We put in our order, about 30 MINUTES later we got our drink and appetizer. It took another 30-45 minutes for us to get our entrees. If you're keeping track, that's an HOUR+ from placing our order, to us getting our food. During this time we saw other tables seated, served and checked out, plenty of to-go orders going out the door while we were still waiting for our food. Not even a check in. Amazing that a tiny place like rural Vashon Island has such a good Thai restaurant. Our "appetizer" was the Papia Pham Sot: excellent! Had the chicken Gaeng Massaman. Absolutely outstanding. I love curry, and this was one of the best I've had in a long time. As we did takeout this evening, I can't comment on the staff and ambiance, but the food was outstanding. I was so excited to come here for my birthday, but am a tad disappointed. To explain, the watercress appetizer was mind blowing- I can't believe I've lived this long before having this delicious dish! I also enjoyed the green curry, really nice flavors but needed more meat and veggies in the sauce. The service was not great. It took awhile to have someone come to our table, and she never asked if we wanted another drink or offered dessert or a dessert menu (do they not have dessert??) - she just brought the bill and never cleared the plates. It was the end of the night, so I understand, kind of, but we felt rushed out of there even thought it was before 9 pm. So, if I was rating the food I would say 4.5, service 2. read more

Very good, almost great. We ordered old fashioned cocktails, papia taud (spring rolls), thom ka soup, and red curry with prawns. The food was excellent, really nice flavors and nuances. Everything was amazing. My only desire (food-wise) was to have a bit more spice (or the option, none was given when we ordered). The drinks were disappointing. Our old fashioned drinks were very watery and lacked the whisky burn and flavor profiles one expects from a decent old fashion. Each cocktail had a huge brick of ice---so big I could barley sip the cocktail without the huge ice brick blocking the alcohol from reaching my lips. I wish the cocktails had the nuance and subtle complexity that was given to the food---that would have bumped May Kitchen and Bar to a 5 star review. I would definitely go back for the food. Turns out, May was the only appropriate restaurant to enjoy my first Thai brunch. I mean outside of Thailand that is! And it was perfect! Super cozy brunch with lots of yummy menu items! The top for me was the son in law eggs! Crispy fried (what seemed like hard boiled) eggs with fresh cilantro and beautiful tamarind sauce. The mushroom and cheese omelet was stellar and everyone was raving about the khao Tom soup! I loved that they had lychee mimosas. The donuts were served with bright green pandan custard which was a beautiful aesthetic to complement the colors of the restaurant and as a bonus, tasted like fruity pebbles! This was such a great find while we were visiting Vashon Island! They don't open until 4pm for dinner. We ordered the fried watercress and shrimp for appetizers. The watercress was incredible. We also ordered the Tom Kha soup which was super creamy and flavorful. It was a different twist on the soup but still with the classic flavors. May Kitchen transports you out of Vashon and into a different sensory experience upon entry, which is intended according to their website. All of the windows are covered so the main drag of the island is out of mind and your sight is consumed by the 150 year old imported teak wood and atmospheric lighting. The food is as delicious and gorgeous as the surroundings. Choices are hard, but on this particular night we opted for the whole fried trout with a mango cashew salad, pineapple curry fried rice with chicken, and spicy green beans with beef. The whole trout is beautiful presented and the server will filet for you at the table. Spices on all dishes were balanced, and it was notable that the saucing was just right. Ingredients weren't drowning in sauce, letting vegetables and meat shine. There is a reason May is considered one of the best Thai restaurants in Seattle, even though it technically isn't in the city. It's worth the ferry ride to experience May's food. read more

The reason why I am giving 2.5 stars for the service is because they called me 30 minutes before the reservation time, and asked us if we could come to the restaurant early. We told them that we couldn't do that due to where we were located at that time. Then they called us back asking if we could place our order on the phone. What restaurant rush their customers to show up 30 minutes early, and ask them to place an order beforehand!? The person told us that the restaurant was slowing down, and the kitchen staff wanted to leave. If you want to prioritize the worker's request, why would you take the reservation at 9 pm??? I could hear that the caller consulted the owner, May, about us not being able to show up earlier or place an order on the phone, so we figured that this call wasn't made without the owner's knowledge. It had lots of fish sauce and tasted like noodles in fish sauce. The strong taste was with every bite. I guess I ll have to wait for this weird taste to go away till I eat Thai food again. We were excited to come to this restaurant had been reccomend to come by our airbnb host. So we made reservations for 7:30, luckily cross checked their hours with the reservation options online, as they are open till 8:30 but on their website you can make a reservation up until 9:30... should have been the first turn around hint.. when we arrived the place looked closed down, kinda abandoned, my partner opened the door though and it was open for buisness. We had heard wonderful things about the art, that it looked like a museum and with the door handle and the wooden partitioner I assumed behind the big red curtain, but sadly after waiting 25 mins to be sat for a reservation we went thru the curtian to see it just blocked the view of the clean open tables. We were seated and waited 15 mins to be given water (not greeted) and over 30minutes to come take even or drink order. Once they finally came we made our food and drink order all at once. We asked that everything come out spicy. The thai iced tea I got tasted like they forgot the tea, and it was sweetened condensed milk.. The appetizer we got was bland without the sauce so we asked for a bit more since there wasn't enough without it. We got larb and it came out bland and kind of grey color we got a spice tray and nothing we did to it could fix it. We sent it back to the kitchen. We also got red curry. Which was also extremely bland, and weirdly sweet. Took the whole spice tray to fix it. The bill came and the extra sauce was 1.50. Another plate was charged $7 for adding protein. Just a heads up as they didnt even say there would be an additional charge. We went to pay cash and the busser kept checking in on us as we counted up. Which was strange, if you wanted us to leave earlier, don't leave us sitting in your restaurant for over an hour without asking us for our order. I ended up paying exact what the bill was as the service was non existant and the food was bland. I would reccomend skipping this place. read more

May Kitchen is always on the list of best Thai restaurants in Seattle and it is worth the hype. The restaurant is on the main drag on Vashon Island and it was open for takeout, but closed for dine-in. I went in at about 3pm on a Saturday to place an order. The guy at the counter took my order of yum makua (fried eggplant with a lime/cilantro dressing) and pad see iew with fried tofu. He told me that they were a little backed up (at 3 in the afternoon!) and it would take about half an hour (which was totally ok with me - mostly letting people know that there can be a wait even at what seems like off-peak hours). There are tons of cute small shops around the main street to pass the time (the Vashon Pharmacy across the street is really fun to look around in). The dining area to the right of the bar is partitioned off but I took a peek and it really does have a nice interior, so it's too bad dine-in wasn't an option. The story is that the wooden teak interior comes from a 150 year old building from Thailand that they brought over piece by piece. My food was ready in like 25 minutes! The makua/eggplant was AMAZING. I have never had an eggplant dish from a Thai place like this before. The lime/cilantro flavor was DELICIOUS. It was so refreshing. There was like fried onion bits in it too that tasted so good with it. And the pad see iew was great too! The noodles were cooked perfectly. And the fried tofu was yummy - it was fried on the outside but they had used like a silken tofu which was actually really nice. Getting here requires a ferry boat ride (no roads/bridges lead to Vashon Island), but if you're ever in Vashon and you're a fan of Thai food (who isn't tho??), definitely try to make a stop here! read more

So happy we decided to eat here during our visit to Vashon! Per COVID restrictions we made a reservation to eat on their patio. We had to order our food when making the reservation so when we got there our takeout food was ready as well as our seat. The outdoor area was a perfect setting! We ordered the fried spring roll for appetizer and the green curry with tofu and pad Thai with tofu for entree. I was SO happy to have good, authentic Thai food in WA! Everything was so good I want to go back and try more. If you're looking for great tasting Thai food, this is the place! We were not disappointed and this place lived up to all the hype!
