I came into Sporty's (this is on my last trip through the island) but I was massively impressed, despite the exterior appearance. Katina? Katrina? Was our waitress and she was just delightful. A little spacey, like both of us, but just absolutely delightful. The food came out quickly, as ordered, and hot. The prices aren't bad either compared to other places on the same strip. It's diner food, as you'd expect. However, it's good!! The only criticism I have, and the only reason I didn't leave a 5* review is that there really ins't an evening menu. I don't know the clientele after it gets dark, but the evening menu is very limited, and since they're open so late I'd love to see more options. Thank you, Katina/Katrina! We were staying in Vashon and came in here for breakfast. This place was busy on a Sunday morning with just two women running the front area. Our waitress was really nice but she was running around non-stop doing everything. We had to flag her down a few times. The dishes had good portions. I ordered the classic egg plate and the sausage patties were a bit too salty. My friend ordered the pancake plate and they loved it. Said it was really fluffy and delicious. Dang. I wanted to like this Sports Bar. Meh food. Service was friendly, but a bit off their game. The vodka soda drink I ordered took SO long we figured our server didn't turn in the order bec my partner's drink was served quickly. When we saw the bartender make a drink for themself, REALLY!?! we assumed my order hadn't been turned in, so we ordered one from the bartender. In the end I got a duplicate order. (But were only charged for one. Fair.) We asked for the French burger to be cooked as rare as possible. I joked I liked it to "moooo". It was served medium well. Zero pink. ZERO PINK! All gray. Yuck! Fish and chips were served piping hot, but nothing special. Drive thru window food. My skinny fries were not piping hot so I didn't care for them. The interior was so chilly that the few patrons there left their coats on the entire time. My partner never took off his parka the entire meal. We mentioned the very chilly air to our server upon our arrival, and she said they just bumped up the thermostat before we walked in. They must have a very slow HVAC. The overhead bright LED lights did nothing to create a cozy ambiance. Quite the opposite in fact. I was dear friends w a restaurant owner for many years, and he taught me to check out the restrooms of any new eating establishment first. (Restaurant Owners will often keep the customers restrooms cleaner than the kitchen.). The bathrooms here seemed pretty clean, but my quick peek into the kitchen as I was walking by was appalling, ...grungy doesn't begin to explain what my casual glance saw. A stiff scrub brush and bleach would transform the kitchen. I wasn't snooping, I literally walked past what anyone could see on their way from the restrooms. Lest I forget to mention that the menu I saw online included Reuben sandwiches, ...YUM, and Montecristo sandwiches WHAT MY PARTNER WAS JONESING FOR... and fried chicken.. OUR FAVORITE. Sadly we did not realize until we got there that only the skimpy bar menu is offered at 6 o'clock on a Sunday. So pretty much everything on the menu was "fast food". Frozen food then Deep fried. This is definitely the spot to go for breakfast or brunch if you are visiting (or living on!) Vashon Island. It's easy to find, easy to park nearby (on the street or in a parking lot around the area). Service was amazing - one person doing everything in the front of the house and let me tell you she was rocking! Thank you! Friendly and smiling, fast and efficient. The place was moderately busy when we came in - it's clearly a local favorite as well as a stop for visitors. We got a selection - we heard they were famous for giant pancakes so one of us tried the indeed enormous plate-sized buttermilk pancake. Also tried the eggs benedict and the biscuits and gravy (we heard those were good). Everything was satisfying and filling. And tasty! The ambience was low key and relaxing. Stopped by Sporty's after a day of shopping, hiking, and exploring Vashon. Sporty's is right on the main strip downtown, very unassuming, I almost missed the entrance. Inside is ample seating, sporty pub-like vibe. We sat at the window and our server came over right away. Food is made fresh, hot, and totally hit the spot! I ordered a philly cheesesteak. Sides you can choose from a fries, potato salad or onion rings. We both wanted to try the potato salad because it's made fresh in house! The server suggested half fries, half potato salad - PERFECT! While waiting for the days Yelp event to start I decided to stop by the local watering hole of the island Sportys! Sportys is diner-eque sports bar showing off both when you enter. I wasn't even sure where the entrance was at first as it has one of those solid windowless doors that night clubs and bars have. Emblazoned on the wall is a huge banner for the Seahawks along with a few flatscreens letting you know immediately - you should come here to watch games. There are plenty of tables and a counter fit for a diner as well as bar. I had a few pints and chatted with the waitress/bartender who was very friendly. She promptly brought out the next beer as I ran low along with some ice water. There were a few presumed locals in the bar as well who were chatty as the Olympics were being shown, so the vibe here on a quiet Sunday afternoon was nice. If the entire staff is as nice as the waitress here is, I could see Sporty's being a great spot for drinks and/or breakfast. read more

Got up early while on Vashon and was hungry after a little hike. Sporty's was the only place open in the early am. I didn't realize it was a bar and restaurant! I didn't partake in any spirits, but it looked like Sport's had a great selection of beer, wine, and mixed drinks. It wasn't crowded but several tables were full when I walked in. I was able to grab a seat at the bar and was given a menu right away. I had the special - one pancake, one egg, and one choice of meat. My food came out right away and was what you would expect at a diner. The pancake was light and fluffy and covered the entire plate! Wanted to check this place out because their menu looked awesome online with the giant pancakes and some of the pics looked delish. We walked in, wasn't greeted with a hi or hello. Noticed the server looking at us from the bar, seemed to be annoyed. Then she grabbed menus, I said "hi, do we seat ourselves" I was met with a gruff nod rather than a word and as she dropped the menus on the table, she said flatly "we only have our bar menu" and began to walk away. I then asked "just the bar menu, non of the other stuff?". She dead pan stared at me "no, just the bar menu" and walked back to the bar. Nothing on your menus or doors said anything about limited menu on Sundays, if that was the case since she never clarified. I headed to the restroom and told the rest of my party, who was also going to the restroom, "let's go somewhere else, she's rude and doesn't really act like she wants our business." As we came back from the bathroom the other half of my party had ordered an appetizer. I informed them that we were leaving due to service and lack of a menu but they wanted wanted something in their stomach. Fine, we stayed for the appetizer. Appetizer came with a 'here ya go' thunk on the table. It was your typical bar food, frozen - fried quick and cools down fast. Nothing to write home about. How do you advertise a full menu and that you serve breakfast till 4 on Sundays but when we arrive at 3pm, you have the bare minimum menu items! And have a crappy attitude server as well. Over this past summer we were looking for something fun and different to do for date night. We decided to hop on the ferry at Pt. Defiance and see what Vashon had to offer. Realizing that a lot of the island closes fairly early, we were thinking our adventure was going to be a bust. We continued driving for a bit until we spotted Sporty's. While it definitely has the local hangout vibe, everyone has always been friendly and welcoming to us. They have a nice covered patio in the back with some cool decorations and plenty of seating. This was a nice place to hang out during the summer when it was warm. There are heaters out there now that the weather has turned and it is still just as enjoyable. The inside is friendly and welcoming, too. Most times, the regulars hang out in the area nearest the bar. There is always friendly banter going on while music or local sports are on in the background. There are also plenty of tables in the dining room if you prefer a bit more space. We haven't made it out early enough to try much of the menu, but Caz sure makes a tasty BLT and a bacon cinnamon roll that you'll definitely want to try! Overall, the bar staff is what brings us back to Sporty's, week after week. Both Caz and Kristen are very friendly and fun to talk to. They always make us feel like family even though we are not island locals. Because of them, we have made Sporty's one of our favorite weekly date night adventures. *If you're coming from the Tacoma side, make sure you leave by 10:30 so you can catch the last ferry home. read more

It was my first time on the Vashon Island so of course, we took it to Yelp to tell us where to eat! We talked to people from the island about where we went to brunch and they told us this is where the locals go! In other words, go here! Dined in and got the Island Hash (corned beef hash) and I was expecting "fancy" corned beef if you know what I mean. My meal came out, I saw it was canned corned beef and the Filipino in me was so happy! LOL. I rarely find Corned Beef Hash this way but when I do, I remember it! I'm glad I came hungry because I cleaned my plate! I got a half order and it was a good amount but I wish I ordered a full so I could've had leftovers. It also came with hashbrowns, eggs and toast. ONLY BREAKFAST OPTION BEFORE 9:00 AM ON VASHON. Yes, there are a couple of coffee places, but if you want steak and eggs or pancakes etc., this is pretty much it, especially since the Hardware Store Resturant has been temporarily closed. I'm staying at my in-laws on the island and discovered this place yesterday. The wait staff is friendly and Island locals will quicklyy strike up a conversation with you. The food is pretty good, especially the pancakes which are gigantic! Today I ordered the Pancake Special. Which is one gigantic pancake along with one egg and your choice of sausage. It was delicious, but I was surprised that it only came with one egg. To be fair, the menu DOES say "with egg" not eggs. It was good though. I mean the pancakes are the thing here. They are big fluffy and filling. Yesterday I ordered Steak and Eggs. This does come with 2 eggs and potatoes. I asked for the steak medium rare and came out medium. The server (owner?) asked how it was and I lied and said "fine". Hey I was hungry. It's difficult to expect perfectly cooked steaks from a place like this. For one thing. The cuts are thin, so it's not as easy to get a perfect temperature like you can with one inch. Although not Impossible. Service is slow. They are swamped on Saturday morning and appear to be understaffed. I waited 20 minutes for my order, although my Bloody Mary came out immediately and it was very good. I went back for lunch the following day and ordered their cheeseburger. Very good. it came with a soft bun open and sat on top of the top bun half so you could doctor it up with the pickles tomato and relish they give you on the side. I ordered mine with sautéd onions. I added the pickles, a little relish (sweet relish,) and mustard.They also gave me some mayo but I was not interested in adding it. So kudos for an excellentt custom burger experience. That patty, although thin well seasoned and delicious. So, this place is a sports bar, with like 6 TVs and a full bar. It is actually a delightful combination of a sports bar and diner.You can't go wrong for breakfast and even lunch. The food is well-seasoned and it's really the only game in town for breakfast. So, Good food, good conversation,the place is clean. Howeverer, I will have to deduct a star for sloooooow service. Solid dive bar in the center (more or less) of the small town that anchors Vashon. Everything out here is relaxed and eschews the hustle and bustle of city life; Sporty's pours some drinks and turns up the volume slightly without being obnoxious about it. Just enough to get your foot tapping, I'd imagine, after having been out on the beach all day (or wherever). It's a standard-issue joint with big flat screens and space in the window for a stage. On Saturday they hosted a big crowd for an international soccer game, wore out the sweet gals who hoisted all the drinks, cleared everybody out, then immediately started setting up for sound check because they had a live band that night. As busy as they were, the other main goin'-out places along the block were so packed that it was impossible to even find a place to sit and have a beer; Sporty's filled the void with no trouble. The bar area is cordoned off from the front part of the room by big divider walls; it probably gets pretty damn packed in here some nights. There are stools along two sections of the bar, which has a few shelves of basic liquors and a relatively solid lineup of tap handles. They might have something pouring that The Hardware Store and Vashon Liquor don't have in kegs, but if you're looking to fill growlers for a weekend at the cabin, I'd probably stop here third. Prices were fair, and everybody knew everybody but everybody, their whole families, and real estate history. Small towns are like that. All the patrons and staff all greeted each other by name. The staff were really friendly, fun gals, even after a long hectic shift with another long hectic shift revving up. Anyone from the city knows that good dive bars are an endangered species. I mean this in the best possible way... to me, "dive" is not a negative connotation, but signifies an informal ambience with community feel. Sporty's definitely has this going on. On Vashon Island, everyone knows your name, and if they don't, it's pretty obvious you're trying to catch the next ferry of the island. The drinks here are cheap, the food is good, and the wait staff is nice as long as you leave your hipster city attitude at the door. It's 10 minutes from the ferry dock, so check the schedule and stop in for a quick drink before heading back to the city... you'll be hard pressed to find as good a dive bar in your neighborhood. read more

Came here during a trip to Vashon to meet my brother at the Coffee Roasterie. The last trip to Vashon we tried the Hardware store for brunch, and weren't impressed. We figured we'd give some other place a try. This place is a sports bar that happens to do breakfast. Just setting expectations here. The waitress was friendly, and took our orders quickly enough. Refills however were not forth-coming. We didn't get any offered until we were ready to leave. The food itself was okay. Very bland. The portion sizes were adequate. The prices were average. Largely, the experience was unremarkable. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. It was much like eating at a Denny's, but with less lighting, and large TV's showing football games. read more

I guess I'm the tie-breaker since there's been one review from Seattle and one from a local on the island. My wife and I had a late breakfast there on our anniversary last month and we both loved it. The portions were gracious to say the least, we both ordered omlettes and they were awesome. The atmosphere was between a mom and pop place and Cheers. The service was good, about 5 minutes after our order she checked in on how we liked it and again once we were finishing up after a stop in between to refill our drinks. It was our first time on Vashon Island and when we go back we'll be sure to stop by there again--as good as it gets for the very reasonable price. read more

I so wanted to like Sporty's because of it's whole "Where the locals eat" thing, but it was basically a dark dirty dive bar with a crappy neon mural and folding chairs that served breakfast. We were there for breakfast and I'm sober and don't like sports so all of that was a minus. My eggs and bacon breakfast was serviceable but unmemorable. My bacon was delectable and I was wondering if it was local. Extra big bonus points for been so generous with the coffee, that stuck out for me. Some of my family got these intimidatingly enormous pancakes that they didn't like much. If you like local diners and dive bars you'll love it. read more
