The cocktails all seem to be named after nautical terms, likely a nod to their island locale. I got the Buoy, which was a tequila-based cocktail with blackberry, Campari, and rosemary. It was quite refreshing. We split the smoked salmon chips and dip, because we both love smoked salmon and Old Bay. This was tasty, but I think a cream cheese dip requires a chip that's sturdier than a potato chip. I ordered the seared ahi and my spouse ordered the burger. We both enjoyed the seared ahi, though I wish it had more of the whipped tahini and harissa. We agreed that the burger was solid, but not the best restaurant burger we've had. We finished with the key lime pie and pot de crème. Recommend both (though maybe avoid the pot de crème if you don't like coffee)! read more

Excellent food and service. We were seated immediately (2pm Saturday) at a nice booth with a warm welcome. The booth was located in the front so it was a bit drafty, but we had hot drinks to keep us warm. My mom ordered the fried chicken sandwich and said it was the best sandwich she's ever had!!! We waited almost an hour for our food. We ordered two meals and a soda. Our waitress never refilled our water or asked if we needed another drink. The restaurant was only at half capacity and it took this long to bring out meals I hate to see the wait time for dinner service. My husband's fish and chips were cold when they were brought to the table and my meal had to be remade. When it did come it was not cooked probably nor did it have the side I ordered. You guys, we were SO SO looking forward to eating here. Loved the idea of its being in a historical building. Loved the name. Loved the whole idea of it (did not try the new addition called "The Yard" which is open whenever the Hardware Store is not open, and serves BBQ (?)). Anyway! It was a hard choice whether to come for breakfast/brunch of dinner and I'm going to say we chose the wrong one. We went for dinner and it was, sadly, a disappointment. There is a fashion for char on food and it works for some items - the chef here on this evening seemed to think it was applicable to ALL items. Every single thing we ordered was overcooked, dry, and much of it was burnt inappropriately. I have, for instance, never in my life been handed a very charred piece of pita bread to go with...anything! The accompanying sauce and cucumbers for the satay were good. The burger my friend ordered was nowhere near her request for medium/medium rare - it was cooked all the way through. FYI, many menu items shown online are not on the menu at this time. 2nd visit after 4 years. We were on an excursion with our retirement community and I remembered that we had a good lunch there before. The atmosphere is welcoming and we were seated quickly. As before, I found the lunch offerings to be a bit expensive. Almost every item was $22-25. My wife had a generous and tasty breakfast burrito. I had a Cuban Sandwich which was served on a nice artisan roll that a Cuban is know for. I expected ham but he meat seemed like beef that would be served in a Phila. cheese steak. It was still tasty and had just the amount of spicey jalapeños. It was served with a generous portion of fries. My wife also had a crabapple cider which was good. It was a good meal with good service at a high price, $53 before tax and tip. On my next visit to Vashon, I think I will try someplace a bit less expensive. read more

Terrible service, the waitress Violet was completely confused. We waited over 20 minutes for our drinks and over an hour for our food. When the food came it was cold. However the resteraunt did comp our meal so that was good. After being told twice that the meal would be comped the confused waitress still tried to give us a bill. I've heard fantastic things about this restaurant so I brought my parents last month when they came for a visit. I got their chicken salad and it was amazing! I've literally been thinking about it since. My mom got a Monte Cristo, my dad got their fish and chips and I have no idea what my kids got. There was nothing leftover and we all left full & happy. I will say that it is a bit pricey but if you plan for it, you should be fine. Also, if you go at a prime time, expect a wait. Well... The Hardware Store used to be amazing. As locals, we ate here often and brought visiting friends and family regularly. A huge part of what made this place special was the outstanding gluten-free menu. Truly the best gluten-free fried chicken anywhere. Gluten-free clam chowder? Yes. Gluten-free fish and chips? Yes. It was rare, thoughtful, and incredibly well done. Tonight, however, we were told the "gluten-free" fried chicken is now only "sort of" gluten free because the chicken is dredged in regular flour. For anyone with celiac disease, that is not just misleading -- it's dangerous. There is no such thing as "sort of" gluten free. In an area with so many people who rely on gluten-free options for medical reasons, it's baffling to see these choices quietly removed or redefined. We were loyal customers and were absolutely willing to pay premium prices for safe, well-executed gluten-free food. Unfortunately, trust matters. Once that's gone, so is the experience. Can you leave less than one star? I feel like the, "Hardware Store" should have the hammer brought down on it! I came into town to take my girlfriend to a nice lunch before I flew out (layover from a work trip), and I was absolutely shocked at what happened in the restaurant. This was March 6. We were seated quickly, and treated wonderfully by our actual waitress, a VERY pregnant woman. She was great! We no sooner sit down before I see what I can only assume is a HIGHLY intoxicated man in a plaid shirt literally yelling at one of the chefs. Every second word was the F bomb. The entire restaurant could hear it. When I asked our server about the person, wondering if it was a drunk customer, she very shyly responded, "No, that's our manager, and his family owns the restaurant." I don't work in HR on any level, but is this true? Is this the way to run a restaurant? By screaming obscenities at employees within full view of the customers? The food was okay, unfortunately not worth the price, but also definitely not worth the environment. They seemed a little understaffed, but we're very patient people. The reason I thought this might be a disgruntled customer was that he continued to consume at the bar after we witnessed the incident that I am describing. I feel as though the manager could have helped with a couple of tables if the people in the drink could have stopped and stood up long enough to help out, but that never happened. Slamming plates down, the atmosphere, all of the things, not to mention the price of underwhelming food? Means we will never return. I don't know if this is the norm here, since I've only been there once, but if this were my restaurant? I'd be bollocking if I didn't say I was embarrassed by what I saw. I've been to a few other restaurants on the island, but I've never experienced ANYTHING like this before. Will steer any of my other visiting relatives and friends away from this place. Another solid three star establishment.....everything is just "ok". Let's start with the hours. They close at 8pm, even on Friday at Saturday nights. We got there at about 7:45pm and they seated us (thank you!) but we could tell they weren't excited about it (sorry!). Now let's talk about abidance. It's a great location and the space has a good vibe. The bartender was kind but the rest of the staff was cold. On to prices - and this is where everything goes sideways - my GIANT salad was $21 and my friends bite sized crab cakes were $22 for two. We couldn't figure it out. Our total after tip and a $30 bottle of wine was over $90. My Buttermilk Fried Chicken Salad was supposedly already dressed, but there wasn't any dressing on it. It didn't come with any sort of cheese - I had to ask for that. And half the plate seemed to be just tomato. The chicken was fried alright - in fact the ratio of chicken to breading was completely off and I felt like it was all just fried skin. So while we appreciated the generosity and being seated, I honestly can't wrap my head around a $90+ total. I've had far better meals for significantly less. But - there's not many options on Vashon so I guess this is one of the best...? By default? I'd suggest going anywhere else if you can. I personally won't be coming back any time soon. read more

I really like what they've done to it as far as atmosphere , photos and, new paint, seats redone etc. My wife and I went 2 days ago to check out their new renovation. We ordered a burger and a lox & latke The food Could have been great IF it had only been HOT! We sat and waited for our food,had a great waitress (very friendly). Then received this great presentation of food only to find when we began eating that the food was lukewarm! I have to say, I have lived on the island for 20 years I've been here before, and the food has been good, but for some reason they can't get it to you hot. I've noticed in the past that my bacon was cold at breakfast and realized it was due to it being cooked ahead of time (which is 1 reason was stopped going there for breakfast). I'm writing this not to be mean but to let them know that this IS a real problem that persists -- hopefully it can be fixed for future visits! read more

If you're looking for a good, hearty, and filling breakfast this is the place for you! I really enjoyed myself here and definitely will be back! There is plenty of space and the menu has something for everyone. I especially enjoyed the rustic modern feel of the inside - it honestly feels like you are in a hardware store (or maybe farmhouse?)! The food was very good! Whatever you get you have to make sure to get some potatoes... So. Good! Their coffee was decent, too, and they had fresh juices for non-coffee drinkers. Very filling meals are served at The Hardware Store so be prepared to bring a to-go box home they also have great vegan and gluten free options!! The only thing left to be desired was the service. The staff was really nice and friendly, and we even got seated pretty quick. However, it took us a while to get our drink order placed and even a while to get more napkins. It did get kind of busy soon after we arrived (I think Church just got out?), so we were trying to be understanding, but it was a little frustrating. The other thing that irked me was that the server/barista added whipped cream on my mocha without my request, but apparently added whipped cream is an additional cost! We had some delicious lunch cocktails here including the Ronin and a few styles of bloody Mary's. Our waiter was super kind and helpful and said the Ronin was named after his son, which is also the name of our 8 yo son who was dining with us! I love a small world moment on a small island in the giant Pacific Ocean. The table had the spicy chicken sandwich (yum), the clam chowder (good, and these were Rhode Islanders with us!), the monte Christo sandwich (different, in a good way!), the club sandwich (nice with the grilled chicken, and the fries were well done), and a kid's bacon grilled cheese with fries. There may have been second cocktails like a negroni, etc involved in the meal too! We love the history of this space being a hardware store turned restaurant on the corner of small town Vashon. Wow! Just a really delicious, top quality dinner enjoyed on a recent Friday evening! Fabulous flavors in salad dressing, sauces, everything was top notch and very gourmet. This place is fantastic for gluten free and dairy free. They can make almost any menu item gluten free. The gluten free fish and chips are very good. The ambiance is nice and it's a cute place. They have an amazing banana chocolate pie (that is not gluten free). That is the best part about this restaurant. The prices are too high though. They charge $5 extra to sub sweet potato fries for regular fries and $3 extra for gluten free bread. It doesn't cost them close to $3 for 2 slices of bread. Please don't make extra money off of gluten free people. It makes us feel taken advantage of when you charge so much more for gluten free subs. $1 or so is reasonable to cover the extra cost to the business. read more

We have seen many iterations of this space, having lived on Vashon Island for almost 30 years. We used to buy seed potatoes there when it was actually a hardware store. This most recent iteration is our favorite, though. The food is consistently good, but what makes us come again and again is our favorite waiter, Christopher. We always ask for him when we make a reservation. He makes us feel like every visit is a celebration with his attention to detail, his repartee, and his generous pours. This is why we meet friends here, bring visitors, have book club gatherings, and come for regular date nights. No one likes to ask for a glass of wine and feel like it is begrudgingly given. I had cup of chowder ( which I thought was exzuberant at $10) and a Cesar salad. My friend had a wedge salad and she took some of that home and her salad. I ate all mine!! Stopped for a quick bite. They only had their bar menu available with 5-6 items on it. I have a soy allergy so I asked the first guy and he said no they don't use it but would check to make sure. Had the second waiter double check after the first guy didn't come back and it turns out they do use it in their fryers. One item available for a non red meat eater that wasn't fried, the ceviche. That's fine. No problem. As someone with a soy allergy, I come across that a lot. I'm very accustomed to navigating a menu around it. It also had an aioli with it which would likely have soy (mayo usually does unless made in house). So I asked for the ceviche, no aioli, no tostadas (they are fried in the soybean oil). The waiter said that's just going to be a small amount of food for the $18. I said that's fine, I understand, but I can't eat anything else on your menu, it's ok that it's not a lot of food. My husband and mom even said it's fine!! I don't know if he thought I would complain, but he was so rude about the fact that it was going to be such a small amount of food. He kept arguing and arguing with us about ordering it. I understood! I'm not an idiot, I just have a food allergy. And I was starving and they had zero other options. Once you've told me the first time what a small portion it will be, and I still want it, please just let me order it!! We just got up and left. Just terrible service. Unfortunate. However, the lunch menu is fairly limited and the prices are a bit insane for what you're getting. $25 for a basic burger? $24 for the Buddha bowl WITHOUT A PROTEIN?! I get that Vashon is technically an island (very short ferry ride), but you're not in the middle of an ocean, nor do you have a view. The food is at least 25-40% priced too high for what it is.
