Weekend dinner turned out to be a great experience all around. Chef specials are worthwhile. We ordered burrata, surprising us with seasonal tomato with balsamic vinegar-fresh and not over seasoned. Steak tartare was also well seasoned, flavorful and tender. The accompanying bread was delightful. I heard another diner exclaim in surprise to her companion upon greeting the chef's special lasagna, which I ordered; it featured thin hand made pasta sheets, mint and basil, ricotta and parmesan with local yellow squash cut thin on a mandoline--rich, satisfying and vegetarian! Did the fried oysters disappear off the menu? Good riddance, I look forward to more chef's specials! read more

1 star for this place is me being generous. We stopped by this morning around 9:10 and there wasn't anyone else in the restaurant. Maybe that should have been my queue to find a different spot. We were seated quickly, and ordered the French toast. For $22 I expected to be blown away and have it be the most amazing plate of French toast I've ever eaten. What I was served was a plate of BURNED toast, a few blueberries and some sliced strawberries. There wasn't any whip cream, nothing special but can we go back to how it was burned. Like black. Not carmelized burned. (You can see how black it is in the pics. Do better. No one else was there) Our served came over gave us our bill so we could pay and never did ask how our meal was. Probably because she knew it was bad. I paid. I'll never go back and I caution anyone else that's in the area. read more

We recently had dinner at The Hardware Store on Vashon Island and overall enjoyed our meal. The fish and chips were decent, but not a standout. The fish was a bit greasy and somewhat dry, and personally I think cod or halibut would have made for a better fish. I've had better fish and chips elsewhere on the island, so this probably isn't something I would order again. The highlight of the meal was the local rockfish. Two nicely seared pieces of fish were served over a flavorful tomato and vegetable medley with a couple of fried artichokes. The fish was cooked perfectly, and the broth at the bottom of the plate was delicious. I only wish there had been some crusty bread to soak it all up. This is definitely a dish I would order again. The kids' meals were also solid. The chicken strips tasted fresh and looked great, and the cheeseburger appeared to be a generous quarter-pound burger. I especially appreciated that the kids' meal can be served with a fruit cup that contains actual quality fruit instead of the typical melon-heavy mix. My only hesitation with the kids' menu is the price. At around $17 for chicken strips or a cheeseburger, it feels a bit expensive. Families may find better value by having kids split one of the larger entrées. We also tried the grilled spring asparagus, which was delicious and paired well with the sauce, but at $19 for six spears, the portion felt a little underwhelming for the price. Service was friendly and attentive throughout our visit, and the overall quality of the food was good. I've also been here for weekend brunch, which is consistently excellent and one of the reasons I keep coming back. Whenever I'm on Vashon Island, The Hardware Store remains a place I'll happily stop at for a meal. Overall, a very good dining experience with a few dishes I'd order again and a few I'd skip next time. read more

The decor and ambiance of this place is very welcoming and clean. I had a party of 3 adults and 1 toddler. We ordered 2 margaritas, unsweetened tea, lemonade, fish and chips, chicken skewers, the sailor's plate and a kids cheeseburger and fries. The food was absolutely delicious. It was a little pricey but absolutely delicious! The homemade tartar sauce was great, the fish was crispy on the outside and soft and flaky on the inside. I rarely leave negative reviews, but my experience at the Hardware Store on Vashon Island was extremely disappointing. From the moment we walked in (party of 4) on 6/14 Sunday at noon, there were one male and one female hosts.  The male host was friendly, greeted us with warm smiles. On the other hand, the blonde female host gave us dirty looks, not saying a word and acting as if she wanted us to leave.  She even turned her back on us while we were trying to ask her questions about menu.  A restaurant's hospitality starts at the front door, and unfortunately this experience left a very negative impression before we were even seated. At that, the experience there was ruined from the moment we came in because of this one female host and the whole experience was a total disaster. Great service, our server who was also the bartender was an absolute hoot and we enjoyed the conversation immensely. Made the meal more enjoyable. However, the food is still just so so. I had a grilled shrimp Louie which was just odd. The shrimp was so over seasoned it was difficult to eat. There was no lettuce to speak of, just some what looked like shredded cabbage. The real off putting part was the hard boiled egg which was soft in the middle, not sure why they thought that was a good thing. My friend had the buttermilk fried chicken salad. She said the chicken was good but only a couple of pieces and the rest was lettuce. Not sure I'd eat there again. read more

It had been a few years since we visited THS and we heard that they redid the interior and possibly changed management, so we decided to give it another chance. The cocktails all seem to be named after nautical terms, likely a nod to their island locale. I got the Buoy, which was a tequila-based cocktail with blackberry, Campari, and rosemary. It was quite refreshing. We split the smoked salmon chips and dip, because we both love smoked salmon and Old Bay. This was tasty, but I think a cream cheese dip requires a chip that's sturdier than a potato chip. I ordered the seared ahi and my spouse ordered the burger. We both enjoyed the seared ahi, though I wish it had more of the whipped tahini and harissa. We agreed that the burger was solid, but not the best restaurant burger we've had. We finished with the key lime pie and pot de crème. Recommend both (though maybe avoid the pot de crème if you don't like coffee)! read more

The Hardware Store has great food and service and a very cool story behind it too. Fans of Gilmore Girls may be reminded of Luke's Diner once they learn more about the building's history! Excellent food and service. We were seated immediately (2pm Saturday) at a nice booth with a warm welcome. The booth was located in the front so it was a bit drafty, but we had hot drinks to keep us warm. My mom ordered the fried chicken sandwich and said it was the best sandwich she's ever had!!! I ordered the fried chicken salad and it was beyond delicious. The presentation was gorgeous with the watermelon, radishes, seaweed sprinkles, cucumbers, tomatoes, avocado, and bacon. The Hardware Store keeps getting better. The refreshed space and menu feel perfect--modern but still cozy in that classic Vashon way. Food was outstanding, hands down the best around. You guys, we were SO SO looking forward to eating here. Loved the idea of its being in a historical building. Loved the name. Loved the whole idea of it (did not try the new addition called "The Yard" which is open whenever the Hardware Store is not open, and serves BBQ (?)). Anyway! It was a hard choice whether to come for breakfast/brunch of dinner and I'm going to say we chose the wrong one. We went for dinner and it was, sadly, a disappointment. There is a fashion for char on food and it works for some items - the chef here on this evening seemed to think it was applicable to ALL items. Every single thing we ordered was overcooked, dry, and much of it was burnt inappropriately. I have, for instance, never in my life been handed a very charred piece of pita bread to go with...anything! The accompanying sauce and cucumbers for the satay were good. The burger my friend ordered was nowhere near her request for medium/medium rare - it was cooked all the way through. FYI, many menu items shown online are not on the menu at this time. The affogato for dessert was tasty. The truffle fries were good. The one bright spot - our server was incredible. Thank you, Colby. You were so agreeable and friendly, so helpful and cheerful. I've heard fantastic things about this restaurant so I brought my parents last month when they came for a visit. I got their chicken salad and it was amazing! I've literally been thinking about it since. My mom got a Monte Cristo, my dad got their fish and chips and I have no idea what my kids got. There was nothing leftover and we all left full & happy. I will say that it is a bit pricey but if you plan for it, you should be fine. Also, if you go at a prime time, expect a wait. There are fun shops around to kill time in (especially the pharmacy next door). read more

We had an uncomfortable experience at The Hardware Store. Even with several empty tables, we waited a while for the host to seat us, and again before our server finally approached. His attitude was immediately off. He was grumpy, impatient, and sarcastic. When I asked if fries came with the burger and what kind they were, he responded condescendingly, "they're fries." Our food took 20-30 minutes to arrive. The black bean burger tasted processed, and the fried rockfish was mostly batter. After finishing, we waited another 10 minutes for the check. What made the experience even more confusing was watching the same server be friendly and attentive to guests who arrived after us. We left feeling dismissed and disrespected. read more

2nd visit after 4 years. We were on an excursion with our retirement community and I remembered that we had a good lunch there before. The atmosphere is welcoming and we were seated quickly. As before, I found the lunch offerings to be a bit expensive. Almost every item was $22-25. My wife had a generous and tasty breakfast burrito. I had a Cuban Sandwich which was served on a nice artisan roll that a Cuban is know for. I expected ham but he meat seemed like beef that would be served in a Phila. cheese steak. It was still tasty and had just the amount of spicey jalapeños. It was served with a generous portion of fries. My wife also had a crabapple cider which was good. It was a good meal with good service at a high price, $53 before tax and tip. On my next visit to Vashon, I think I will try someplace a bit less expensive. read more

Took the $7.50 ferry from West Seattle to Vashon, then the Bus for $3.00 to middle of downtown Vashon. Simple. In the back alley of The Hardware Store is a secret oasis called The Yard. A hidden gem with a chill vibe and music to match. Tim runs this shows with his witty banter, hospitality and island lore. We enjoyed an unexpected take on the classic Caesar salad which was bright and flavorful. The Rose was on point as well as a seasonal cocktail of Sparkling Rose and Campari. This is a must visit for a sneaky escape away from Seattle. We will definitely go back! read more

The restaurant has a comfortable atmosphere, and it's clear that a lot of effort goes into the food. The dishes we ordered were fresh, well prepared, and nicely presented, so there are definitely things to like here. Unfortunately, the overall experience felt inconsistent. Service was polite but not very attentive, and it took longer than expected to get assistance during our meal. While nothing was seriously wrong, the visit didn't feel as welcoming or smooth as I had hoped. I'd consider giving this place another try because the food has potential, but I think improving the overall customer experience would make a noticeable difference. read more

Stopped here for lunch after seeing the Troll and Light House. Very casual restaurant. Service was good. It's a little bit pricey. I ordered a BLT ($19), I wouldn't recommend it. They used cherry tomatoes, which was awkward on a sandwich. I only was able to eat half. My son and his wife had the fish and chips ($25). They said it was good, and said the coleslaw was very good. Strawberry lemonade they charge $6 for the lemonade and $3 for the flavor. It's also a very limited menu. read more

The restaurant was only at half capacity and it took this long to bring out meals I hate to see the wait time for dinner service. My husband's fish and chips were cold when they were brought to the table and my meal had to be remade. When it did come it was not cooked probably nor did it have the side I ordered. My two friends and I have celebrated every single one of our birthdays with breakfast here for years. We absolutely love the food, the service, and the general atmosphere. It has been our go-to tradition for a reason! However, there is one consistent problem that is making it hard to enjoy our visits: the music is simply too loud. Every time we visit, the volume is so high that we can barely hear each other speak or enjoy our conversation. Each time we ask to have it turned down, the staff is polite and lowers it briefly, but the sound system inevitably returns to the original loud volume shortly after. We truly want to continue our birthday tradition here, but the noise level needs to be addressed. We hope management can find a permanent, comfortable middle ground for the volume so loyal guests can actually visit while they eat. read more

Well... The Hardware Store used to be amazing. As locals, we ate here often and brought visiting friends and family regularly. A huge part of what made this place special was the outstanding gluten-free menu. Truly the best gluten-free fried chicken anywhere. Gluten-free clam chowder? Yes. Gluten-free fish and chips? Yes. It was rare, thoughtful, and incredibly well done. Tonight, however, we were told the "gluten-free" fried chicken is now only "sort of" gluten free because the chicken is dredged in regular flour. For anyone with celiac disease, that is not just misleading -- it's dangerous. There is no such thing as "sort of" gluten free. In an area with so many people who rely on gluten-free options for medical reasons, it's baffling to see these choices quietly removed or redefined. We were loyal customers and were absolutely willing to pay premium prices for safe, well-executed gluten-free food. Unfortunately, trust matters. Once that's gone, so is the experience. Another solid three star establishment.....everything is just "ok". Let's start with the hours. They close at 8pm, even on Friday at Saturday nights. We got there at about 7:45pm and they seated us (thank you!) but we could tell they weren't excited about it (sorry!). Now let's talk about abidance. It's a great location and the space has a good vibe. The bartender was kind but the rest of the staff was cold. On to prices - and this is where everything goes sideways - my GIANT salad was $21 and my friends bite sized crab cakes were $22 for two. We couldn't figure it out. Our total after tip and a $30 bottle of wine was over $90. My Buttermilk Fried Chicken Salad was supposedly already dressed, but there wasn't any dressing on it. It didn't come with any sort of cheese - I had to ask for that. And half the plate seemed to be just tomato. The chicken was fried alright - in fact the ratio of chicken to breading was completely off and I felt like it was all just fried skin. So while we appreciated the generosity and being seated, I honestly can't wrap my head around a $90+ total. I've had far better meals for significantly less. But - there's not many options on Vashon so I guess this is one of the best...? By default? I'd suggest going anywhere else if you can. I personally won't be coming back any time soon. read more
