This place is pretty underrated. Let me start by saying how much I appreciated the service and the attention. The outdoor seating was really pleasant, especially on a 74° day on Vashon Island. They immediately brought us our chips and salsa, and the salsa was really good. I made my own burrito with steak only to be out ordered by my wife who had the carnitas. The steak was fine, good. That being said the carnitas was fire. There are leftovers in the fridge. I might sneak into them without my wife knowing. We also tried the Margarita flight with the standout being, The Cadillac. As far as the ambiance didn't, we did not eat inside. But outside was lovely. If you're looking for Mexican food on the island, these folks will do just fine. read more

*vegan review* WOW. This place is fantastic!!! After exploring Vashon Island for the first time, we were hungry and hopeful that somewhere would be open on a Memorial Day Monday. Casa Bonita to the rescue! The waitress was extremely friendly, kind, and attentive, the ambience was charming, and THE FOOD! SO GOOD! They have a full page of vegan options that all sounded great so it was hard to decide, but we ended up going with the daily special, which was a vegan steak covered in a rich mushroom gravy, accompanied by rice, beans, and a salsa-slaw-salad. The vegan steak looked and tasted more realistic than anything I've ever experienced before, and was seasoned perfectly. I was floored about how good it was. Our meat-eating friends also loved their enchiladas and burritos, so this is really a place that will make everyone happy. I enjoy going here, but honesty I feel like someone local telling tourists it's awesome. Vashon has no really all round good knock your socks off restaurants - but if you order wisely you can do ok. At Casa Bonita there are specials, like beef tongue, which I think was a bit dry (but wow, you don't see tongue on the menu at any other Vashon restaurant. To be great Casa Bonita would need to expand the ingredients to more kinds of chilies and as someone else suggested, up the quality and variety of tequila. The margarita's are fine - but again, not GREAT. You are never going to have a great basic margarita using a mix. There is an option for house lime juice which is a bit acidic. Orange liqueur could be "house made" - no need for Cointreau, and the bottom shelf stuff tastes like a jolly rancher. But maybe we should step back and consider what a "Mexican Restaurant" is.. read more

My daughter and I were visiting Vashon on a Saturday. My daughter really wanted Mexican so we walked right over to Casa Bonita after shopping at Granny's attic. I was pleasantly surprised with the whole experience! The restaurant itself is super cute and has adequate seating inside, was actually really packed! Once we were sad, they immediately brought over tortilla chips, salsa, and a really, really yummy slaw (seriously, so good!!). For how busy they were service was really great! We also had to order the spicy queso- a little pricey for what you receive, but it was super tasty!! I absolutely love that they had a combo meal because I could never choose just one thing! Oh. My. Goodness. This place is THE best Mexican I have had in a very very long time and I am so sad I will have to travel back to Vashon to eat here again. I love that they have an "Enchilada bar" where you get to customize yours. I naturally did the cheese and onion filled with traditional red sauce and everything about it was just perfect. I haven't finished an entire plate of Mexican like this in as long as I can remember. The cheese used in my enchiladas was a white cheese and tasted just like you'd get in Mexico - I feel like not many places use this outside of Mexico and it was perfection. Even the salsa served with chips was delicious. The rice was delicious. The beans were delicious. All of it - just delicious! This place is small. It's inside a converted house. But do not let this mislead you - the staff is very friendly and the food is delicious (I don't think I've said this enough already hehe) . The restaurant itself is small and modest. It seemed mostly clean, though definitely showing signs of wear. The staff were friendly enough, though they often seemed more interested in laughing with each other than serving guests. Sadly, things go downhill from there. The food was really disappointing. The chicken in my husband's meal and the steak in mine were both terrible. The chicken was dry as a bone. The steak was bland and tough as jerky (most of it ended-up in the garbage). For some reason the corn tortillas that came with our meal were dripping in oil - so strange. Even the guacamole was unappetizing (which is something that I've rarely experienced - even at mediocre Mexican restaurants). While we were grateful to find this place open (when most restaurants were closed earlier than we'd anticipated), we cannot recommend this place. Perhaps you'll have better luck (there certainly seems to be quite a few reviews from people who really like this spot), but we were told that Zamorana is the better choice if we want Mexican food on a future visit to the island. read more

You know you're going to have yummy Mexican food when the first taste is their homemade salsa and chips and they knock your socks off! The red salsa had a perfect spice to it and they also have a super fresh corn and cabbage salsa that was some serious flavour. We were a table of 4 and decided to all split a few things so we got to all try several dishes and everything was a 10/10! We tried the steak fajita, tamales, chile relleno and the Birria. Holy wow it was all super delicious. The portions are also very generous so we had a nice box of leftovers too! Vashon is one of my favourite places in the world and Casa Bonita will be a place I will very much look forward to coming to again. I live in LA and we are spoiled with so much amazing Mexican food so I think I am a review to trust ! It's a cozy and lively place with very friendly and pro service. read more

This was quite an unfortunate experience. Let's start with the service, our server had a blunt personality and yelled directly in my brother's ear for the plate being hot when he attempted to reach for it. I understand it's hot and the intention is to be safe, but you don't have to yell and create a scene in the restaurant and embarrass your paying customers to express that. The same thing could have been said at a normal tone or the server could simply step back. We did not appreciate this at all, super unprofessional behavior with a huge lack of mannerisms and respect. Visually the food looked good until you bite the undercooked chicken. It was very tough and chewy and disgusting. I could not finish nor enjoy my meal. The rice and black beans were okay but it was very overpriced for below average quality food. The restaurant itself was also very dirty looking, there were dripping beverage stains from Lord knows how long ago all over the walls where we sat. It was our first and last time there. I believe this is the only Mexican restaurant on the island. It seems to me authentic Mexican vs "touristy Mexican". It's also 1 of the 2/3 places open on a Mon and Tues on Vashon. Their menu has a wide variety. I ordered their homemade margarita which was orange colored and definitely not lime flavored, but delicious! And the shrimp and mushrooms lunch. Which was amazing!! Homemade tortilla chip and assortment of salsas and bean dip came out as soon as we were greeted. read more

Wow! We were so pleased! This is the Relleno Burrito! Huge and so creamy, smooth and mellow with a lovely relleno taste and a very rich red sauce. We started with the mussels. They were in a lovely sweet and savory sauce. It was plenty for 2 people. This meal was so much beyond my expectations that I had to write a review. The carne asada was so tough that I could not eat it, basically had a $30 scoop of rice. They forgot to ask which beans I want, so I had to avoid the cheese-laiden beans. WARNING! FOOD POISONING! Me and my family have been eating here off and on throughout the years and almost every member has experienced food poisoning or something similar at least once. My mom and my dad have both felt incredibly sick the day after eating here and now i am experiencing that as-well! Ive had a similar experience too when i was younger where I woke up in the middle of the night because i had this agonizing abdominal pain after eating at casa bonita prior. It doesn't happen every time but I think it's happened enough times to rule out it being a coincidence. The Burger I ordered was low key suspicious. It tasted fine, but you could just tell there was something off about it. The patty was very dry and it looked quite charred and shriveled. It might have been old considering they're probably not serving up many burgers at a Mexican spot. It pains me to give this review as i actually have fond memories of this place and the food overtime has been quite good, the inside is a little small but its not too distracting, some of the booths are a little worse for ware and the lighting is dim, but the place does overall have that pleasant cultural flare. But if the food is making others sick then thats a case that should never be taken lightly, eat here at your own risk. read more

I made my first trip to Vashon in the early 2000's. At that time, I noticed a Mexican restaurant at the dock. I also said if I returned to the island, I would check it out. I don't know if this is the same place, but I did see that same eatery was there, it's just no longer Mexican. The service here could not have been any friendlier. Prices weren't the lowest, but the portions were generous, so well played on their part. Originally, I wanted to try the pork carnitas, but decided to fall back and try the carne asada. The chips were light and crisp. The salsa however was uninspired. When the plate came, I was impressed with the portion of steak. I got two pieces that were the size of two large chicken tenders. Flavor was pretty good, but I could have used a little more smoke and seasoning. Both the rice and beans were flat. The beans lacked the pork infused flavor and the rice lacked the chicken stock base. There was also a generous plop of guacamole, about the size of a golf ball, unfortunately, it didn't have much flavor. I was also pestered by flies and despite my server seeing me swat at it, nothing was said or done. Once the fly finally settled in my salsa, the meal was over, even though, I had no plans to use the salsa. It had just become too much of a struggle. I had hoped to find a place that could be a seasonal treat or way to impress a date, but when you combine all of the traffic, wait and cost of a ferry ride to get here to have such a disappointing experience, it's clear to me, that this is not a destination location. Also, people that choose to sequester on an island do it for a reason, so unless invited, let's just saw everyone doesn't make you feel welcome. read more

This was our last stop on our little day trip to Vashon Island. This place was recommended to us by a friend so we thought we would give it a shot. It is located a block behind the main drag and directly behind The Pharmacy. So it is a little hidden away. The outside was less than "nothing special" Just your run of the mill Mexican looking restaurant, maybe a little dumpier with no landscaping and big beer signs in the windows. So when we got here we were unsure we wanted to go in. Because this was a date and we were expecting something a little nicer maybe a little more romantic. But we went in because like I said a friend recommended the place. Inside looks like they took an old house, took down some walls, called it a restaurant. But the staff was super friendly and sat us right away. The place was pretty empty when we arrived around 4:45 but the Seahawks playoff game was going on and the only tv in this place is in a small bar area to the right as you come in. So I am not surprised. But there was music and it made it easy for my wife and I to enjoy talking to each other. They brought out a huge basket of chips with 3 different salsa options. I recommend the Salsa slaw. SO GOOD. Their menu is filled with so many unique items I have not seen on a normal Mexican restaurants menu before. Which in my mind made this place stand out. The Fajitas with authentic barbacoa were great AND they don't charge for extra tortillas like literally every other place I have been. One annoying part of the night is the phone ringing. It was so loud and filled the entire restaurant. And their caller ID would speak out the name and number of who was calling for all to hear. Made worse by the fact that they seem to do A LOT of take out orders. So the phone was always ringing. They should find a way to put it on vibrate or just have it in ONE location not 2 or 3 places throughout the restaurant. We are visiting from Phoenix for ten weeks on Vashon. It is hard to believe that such authentic food like this is represented here. I make my own salsa and hot sauces from garden fresh produce from my own garden in Phoenix. The salsa here is amazing. The margarita are in the top 2% of any I have had worldwide. Time travel: that is the best way to describe Casa Bonita on Vashon Island. I felt like I stepped back to some 70s idea of Mexican food, with giant combination plates, refried beans galore, black velvet paintings on the walls, sombreros, 50s pink walls, red vinyl cafe seating, a hot water heater exposed and chained to the wall in the ladies bathroom, the 70s carpet, and service that really takes itself seriously in a classic family-style restaurant way. The best thing on the menu at Casa Bonita turned out to be the chips, which appear to be deep fried in house (always the best, when they do this) and are complementary, and served with warm bean dip and salsa. The rest of the food was generic, traditional mexican food. Some dishes less successful than others, with lots and lots of cheese. The refried beans were particularly bland. Still, if you have a hankering for Mexican food, while on Vashon and keep expectations in line, you could have a pleasant meal here, especially filling up on those homemade tortilla chips. read more

First, the food. One of the main ways I judge a Mexican restaurant is their salsa(s). I didn't care for their red salsa, I suppose it may have been that they use roasted tomatoes, but overall I didn't care for it. The pico that they serve is pretty tasty though. I asked for a salsa verde and it was bad enough that it sat untouched after the initial try. The chile relleno was small and pretty standard, nothing to rave about. The red sauce that they smother it with had a bbq sauce edge to it, but it was okay. The person I was with enjoyed their tacos, so that was good. As for the service, I was irritated by the time I left and I would never go back. What greets you first as you look at your table? A big pump bottle of hand sanitizer. I appreciate the appearance of cleanliness, but this place in general has seen better days. Marla was our server and I have to say, I felt like she was friendlier to her other customers. When I was a server for quite a few years, I poured the charm on thick, even if I didn't feel like it, it's just what you do. She just wasn't a great server. I asked for the salsa verde and she brought it out, never mentioning she would charge me for it. I've never been charged for salsa at a Mexican restaurant. She took it off the total, when I asked her to, but she was unapologetic about not telling me there was a charge for it.
