Another month, another 'new to us' restaurant for our girl date dinner: El Cabrito . FMDrooling, this place was ! Started with the carnitas taquitos dorados and chips, salsa, & guac. Guacamole was so fresh, perfectly seasoned, and it took serious self-control not to just hoover it in minutes. Salsa was also fresh and delish, not too spicy, and complimented the chips and guac nicely. The taquitos were another hit, filled with a decent amount of tender shredded pork and topped with all the right stuff, perfectly crispy but not at all dry. Amazing! The tlayuda was a completely new to us dish, but after seeing a post about it, we had to try. Great for sharing, super unique flavor, spicy and smoky sauce, very filling! The highlight for us, though, without question was the Coloradito mole enchiladas with chicken. Holy Oaxaca!!! I could eat these every week and be the happiest woman alive! I have eaten a lot of mole in my life, but never anything like this. We literally stopped our conversation mid-sentence several times to pause, savor another bite, and then talk about the party happening in our mouths. I don't know what sorcery was in that sauce, but I'm a convert for real. The fact that I live less than 5 min from this magic shop is either going to be a blessing or a curse...man, do I want those enchiladas in my pie hole again! Soooooo good! And the sweetest staff! Was simply blown away by this place. The service was exceptional, the lady who helped us was so kind and welcoming. We ordered so much food and we simply loved all of it. The salsa that was served with the chips was delicious, it had great flavor with a good building heat. We had the molotes which is something I've never had before but it was to tasty! It had a spicy sauce on top that had a great spice without overpowering the other flavors. We also shared the coloraditos mole enchiladas, and it was instantly my favorite mole sauce I've ever had. The black beans and rice that was served with it was cooked perfectly and seasoned well. We also shared an order of the tacos, two pastor and two carnitas. Both were beautifully seasoned and cooked perfectly. Somehow we still had room for dessert after all of that, (we didn't finish everything) and the flan did not disappoint. I loved the decor of the restaurant, you can tell that it was thoughtfully curated, also obsessed with the little pillows that were on the booth we sat on. We tried the chicken mole plate (4 thinly sliced chicken breasts with 4 small corn tortillas) & chicken mole enchiladas (3 enchiladas) Both were really good! The rice was so flavorful with good garlic flavor, wish they gave more rice though!The price was a little steep for the amount of food we got, $18/$20 a plate that included less than about 1/2 cup each of rice & beans! El Cabrito is a small restaurant right off of Ambaum Way. It honestly doesn't look anything that special from the outside, but inside, they have lots of colorful Oaxacan decor including traditional Oaxacan clothing displayed in a small closet. Although indoor seating is limited, they have additional seating out back on the patio. They also have a small gravel parking lot behind the restaurant available for customer parking. El Cabrito doesn't have a super expansive menu, but it has all the essentials - tacos, burritos, plates, and a list of specials. When my boyfriend and I went on an autumn weeknight, they had specials that included Butternut Squash Tacos and Spicy Camarones (shrimp), but I assume they seasonally rotate. After perusing the menu, I decided to just go with the TACOS ($12). They give you a plate of four tacos and let you choose two types, and so I chose the chicken mole and the carne asada. My boyfriend is a big enchilada fan and thus ordered the CHICKEN MOLE ENCHILADAS ($16). All I can say is HOLY MOLE! Their CHICKEN MOLE is the BEST mole I've ever had in my life- slightly sweet, slightly savory, and just a little bit of umami from the chocolate. It is rich, creamy, dark, and everything mole should be. And of you won't take my word for it, El Cabrito's mole is so good that they actually have a short article from a newspaper taped to their window raving about their mole. The CARNE ASADA tacos were good too, but definitely not as outstanding as the chicken mole. Next time, I'm getting all chicken mole tacos or possibly just a plate of chicken mole! Portions are alright, but not huge. My boyfriend was honestly still hungry after finishing off his plate, but I was satiated given that I wasn't super hungry to start. Service was decent. I'm going to update my review of this place, but do the reasons I'll explain, they get no more stars. Last time I was here, the service was slow, too slow. I seriously questioned the mental dexterity of the man working the counter. He was here on my last two visits and is also the reason it's been multiple years since I returned. This time, there was a really sweet young woman working the counter. Her English was a little spotty, but she knew enough to take your order and answer questions. Prices have gone up 25% in the last two years, so I am not at all impressed with the total cost here. I had the taco plate that used to be $12, now it's $16. I think that is a lot when you consider there is no rice and beans, and this isn't full service Mexican. I asked for chips and salsa, and she told me they weren't free. I requested it anyway. Then when I told her I was eating in, she said, chips and salsa are complimentary for dine in. That was bizarre to me. I get it, maybe your cost is $.15 for a paper bag and small plastic cup to go, but I would just assume that was built into your cost of doing business. I've seen places charge $.50 for to go orders just to cover those costs and I think that's fair. I shouldn't be shortchanged just because I elected not to dine in. She brought the chips and salsa, and it was legit about 12 chips, the basket wasn't even half full and the salsa dish had about 2 tablespoons of salsa in it. Don't be so cheap and stingy. Serve a full basket and salsa dish and if you decide to charge $2 for a refill, I won't complain, but that portion was too small to even consider complimentary, it was more of a teaser. I will say, either they changed the recipe or the cooks, because this salsa was 10x better than when I was here before. It was rich, with a zesty kick and I'd put it on anything they served. When the tacos came, they came with a small side of a spicy chili salsa, but the table salsa was far better and should be served with each meal. The tacos were juicy, rich and flavorful, but overpriced at $16. This used to be a low income area and still is in many ways, but as someone told me last year, just west of here, property skyrockets. Instead of small homes that are worth $450,000, you find homes worth $2,000,000. Those people won't bat an eye on a $16 taco plate, but I suspect it's those of us on a budget that are keeping your lights on. This place is also too small. I think the capacity is about 12, so don't come as a group. They did build a covered area out back that probably holds 40, but it's not heated, so unless it's summer or you don't mind the cold, this area goes unused and maybe they need to consider enclosing it and adding lights and heat. I'd be happy to sit out there as long as it's comfortable. I have never been anything less than impressed with the Carnitas here, however, the combination of price matched with small portions, I can't give them anything about 3 stars. It's 5 star food, but the price and portion each take a deduction. Complementary chips go a long way to making my stay pleasant, it also allows you to take more time in the kitchen, because if I have something to snack on, I'm not tapping my toes wondering why it take 5 minutes to make a 15 second taco. From a flavor perspective, these guys are top 3 behind. Caadxi Oaxaca in Snoqualmie and Acapulco Fresh in Kenmore. Both of those places have the area's best burritos, and both do it for less and also offer pinto beans which is my preference. Caadxi will charge you for chips, but it's a refillable basket and they have a great salsa bar. Acapulco Fresh doesn't charge you for chips and also has a great salsa bar, but their chip portion is also 12 at a time, so be prepared to make multiple trips to the counter to have your tiny tray refilled. If you charge a premium price, make sure you are giving a premium experience. That is how you go from roadside taco shack to full size restaurant that has to take reservations due to overwhelming demand. read more

Came here on a whim since I was in the area and the food was pretty good. It's a small place with maybe 3-4 tables but looks like there are regulars that come here often. Parking is a little weird, but we ended up parking at the bank next door. We ordered the molote and the toquito as it's not something we usually see on the menu so we wanted to see what it was. They are cook to order so it does take a little time: Toquitos- meaty and crunchy and goes well with the sauce provided. Molote - fried potato balls??? Popped in for a quick dinner and the restaurant was empty (also 5pm, valid), I got the molotes and my partner ordered the pork enchiladas, we got the pico and chips to share. Food took a bit but it was super hot and fresh. Chips and pico were super good, tomatoes were perfect. The molotes weren't bad but I found them lacking some flavor, the avocado sauce was really good and I wish there was more of that, I didn't taste much chorizo. Wow, what a great little spot! I was in the area and wanted a great experience, and I was not disappointed! First of all, I wanted to say that the lady at the register was AWESOME! Very helpful and pleasant, she even offered chips and salsa to start! I loved the colorful interior and the cool art on the wall. The chips and salsa were fantastic. The salsa was tasty and just a bit spicy! Cleared up my sinuses!! Finally, the carne asada burrito was amazing. The meat was so tender and flavorful! And the sauce they gave you with the food was so nice and smokey! My only even slight critique is having the sour cream on the outside of the burrito, making it a bit messy. I had heard so many great things about El Cabrito via Yelp, various articles, and word-of-mouth, so I was extremely excited to try it out. Tl;dr - it was okay. We arrived mid-afternoon on a Saturday afternoon and we were the only people there, so we were able to order quickly. We ordered the Carne Asada, Chicken Mole, and the Pastor and Carnitas tacos. Maybe my expectations were too high? Maybe they had an "off" day? Either way, I didn't have the same experience that people raved about. The chicken in the Chicken Mole was pounded down, thin, and dry. The mole itself has a great earthy flavor, which I really enjoyed, but I didn't get any other flavor notes coming though, like a smokiness or a sweetness, to balance out earthy flavors, and I missed that. The Carne Asada was fairly dry too. Because it was as thin as the chicken, it was easy to cut through, but it was dry. The tacos were the best part of our meal, in my opinion. The Pastor and Carnitas were both very tender and had a good flavor. The tortillas seemed like your run-of-the-mill store-bought street taco tortillas, which was fine, they just didn't bring much to the table in terms of flavor or texture. Across the board, the food was okay. Nothing shined, but nothing made us regret ordering what we did. It was "okay." My rating also reflects that I've personally enjoyed (in my opinion) better Carne Asada and Tacos in the Burien area, so if I'm in the mood for those, I'd go elsewhere. If I were absolutely craving mole and not willing to go to Seattle or elsewhere, then I'd give this one more try. El Cabrito is a hidden gem in Burien that serves authentic Oaxacan style Mexican food. I think the name means "kid goat" in Spanish. During covid, they are open for take out or outdoor dining. They are located right on Ambaum Blvd. There is a parking lot in the back, but it is really easy to miss. If you are heading south on Ambaum, you'll want to turn right after Marty's Used Tires. There is a little driveway there. If you pass Sound Credit Union, you've gone too far. I ordered the Carnitas plate: braised pork served with rice, beans, and tortillas. It was flavorful and perfectly cooked so I definitely recommend it. My husband had the green enchiladas with pork and he also enjoyed his meal. The people who work here have always been really nice to us. I was also really impressed because last time we got our food pretty quickly even though a large family ordered right before us. Tried the coloradito mole enchiladas, no loges and some chips with pico de gallo. The portion sizes are just right from the amount of beans, size of enchiladas and even portion of salsas. I enjoyed the mole - it was very tasty and comforting. The decorations are unique and interesting to look at. It was a bit cold inside but not an issue. The bathroom light is on the outside of the bathroom - initially i was confused because i flipped the switch inside for it to only turn the fan on. Our favorite neighborhood spot for so many reasons... but primarily because the service is always as friendly as it gets and the food is consistently delicious. This winter I think my fella and I ordered to go from this spot about once a week. I am obsessed with their simple chicken soup (again- winter... and such a nourishing, refreshing option), and we are both crazy for their burritos. But we've explored about half of the menu at this point. Tlayuda is on point, and their Smokey salsa is outrageous. But truly it's the service and personality of the crew that keeps us coming back. The staff has personality- not transactional like so many other spots. And while we see different faces at the register, all of them seem glad to be working there. Felt like I was eating at my friends house :) Tlayuda - can feed two. Never had this dish before but thought it was super decent. Don't know what to compare it to since it was my first time. short story: i stopped in today and will be returning! as a vegetarian who loves latin american food, it can be hard to find things that aren't slapped together as an afterthought or filler on a menu because most of the kitchen focus goes to the preparation of meat dishes. since el cabrito has been in existence i've had my eye on it but i've never given it a chance. in terms of access, it's definitely a whole lot easier to turn right and park behind the building if you're heading southbound on ambaum. if you're coming from the south, i cheated and turned west onto 148th sw and then immediately into the sound credit union parking lot, on the north side of their building. i thought i might be able to access specific parking for el cabrito by doing that but they do not share any common area with the bank so know that ahead of time. if you're coming from the south you might need to go north on ambaum, make a u- turn or a left and come at it from the north. do not be deterred, though, because it's a small family run shop that clearly tries hard and wants to win your taste buds over. they did just that with the roasted veggie burrito i got to go! and thankfully i asked for two salsas--amazing chipotle flavor to go atop my burrito which was packed with rice, beans, sour cream and/or cheese (i honestly couldn't tell!) and sautéed zuchinni and onions along with either jalapeños or nopales (again, couldn't tell but it did.not.matter because it was delicious!) they had gorditas and costillas (ribs) as their special and if the meat dishes are anything like what i ate, i'd wholeheartedly say give them a try! so glad i finally made the effort to pick something up from them so that i can make this a spot i frequent on my trips into and out of burien. read more

This review is based purely on Tortilla Soup, a dish I will almost always choose if it's on the menu. El Cabrito's version is excellent. Listed on the menu as Chicken Soup, EC's version includes chickpeas, an ingredient I am not used to seeing, but really enjoyed. The broth was flavorful and with inclusion of a side of rice, this soup is a whole meal. I would like to try their other dishes, but I might not get past the soup! read more

A hidden gem! This place looks so small on the outside and I guess it is: two tables seating 4 each then a row of 6 or so bar stools facing the window. But then there's the covered outdoor area in the back with the parking lot for those willing to brave the temperatures. Our orders of roasted vegetable tacos and ribeye taco specials were delicious! The veggie preparation & seasoning seemed intentional, not like others that seem to just throw their fajita veggies in a tortilla and call it good. Ask for some Morita sauce for your guacamole...
