I walked into the Burien Azteca on a mission to find a good spot for my boy's bachelor party...I left wanting to find somewhere else to throw my boys bachelor party! The server who greeted me in the bar was not very welcoming at all! Sometimes I don't think people realize how much their tips rely on their approach and their demeanor while in service! She asked if I wanted to start with a drink and I asked for water...that's when her half happy face disappeared! I'd just arrived and was more hungry than thirsty but her actions turned my stomach completely. She returned again with my water and I inquired about flautas, made with ground beef, they're not regularly made. She did offer to inquire with the chef but I declined and returned to the happy hour menu. As she walked away she snapped that happy hour food required a drink purchase. I am glad she told me but her tone stunk; she was short and rushed but I was 1 of maybe 5 customers at that moment! I ordered my happy hour drink, a rum and sprite with a lemon, I got a rum and sprite with a lime...no fuss, I took the drink to the bartender and kindly asked to exchange the lime for a lemon and he complied. Later in passing, I jokingly asked if he had any liquor with worms in the for my friend to shoot at his party, he snapped "No!" and walked off...I thought I was in the Bad Day Bar n Grill!! I quietly finished my drink without ordering food, ate my chips and salsa, paid my bill, leaving no tip because their service deserved no tip...I did leave a tip within a tip, lol! I noticed 2 things while I was there... 1. I was 1 of 2 black people in the establishment, the other black person was with a group of white people. 2. I was alone. Neither factor should've affected my service but they did. I can honestly say, I will NEVER return! I'd rather waste gas driving all the way to Mountlake Terrace than to ever step foot in this establishment EVER again!! Just imagine a server smiling and kissing every other white ass in the bar then when she gets to me, she was short with vague responses. She NEVER made any menu suggestions. When she brought my drink, she didn't say anything or make eye contact; she dropped it off while walking behind me to another table. Simply pathetic service! We were starving so we are like there was no tomorrow, i pretty much order the same thing everytime, im a creature of habit and i like what i like .. My go to plate are always NACHOS, either its made perfectly or its not ! Well i was starving, i ate it all but it didnt matter to me, burned, little cheese, not their best one but far from it being the worst, the Federal Way location take the trophy for that one, the worst nachos ever ! Elizabeth never asked me how was it, I would have said something but I didnt want to wait for a new dish, so im glad she didnt ask me ... It's been a while since I've gone to a Mexican restaurant and dined in, I'm glad this place met most of my expectations. I appreciate that they offer good portions of food at a reasonable price and gave speedy service. I had ordered Burrito Dos Amigos, imagine bull burrito split in half, and half is pork and the other is beef. Nicely plated with a generous amount of chile verde and Mexican rice; they do not skimp on the protein and Monterey cheese so each bite you're guaranteed a bit of everything. You're given freshly made and warm tortilla chips, paired with mild salsa upon sitting down; these chips are unlimited. Our server seemed unenthusiastic, but that's fine with me as long as the meals arrive in a reasonable amount of time and checks in with us regularly. Azteca was honestly a huge letdown. The service was terrible right off the bat, and the chips they brought out were so stale they were basically cardboard. When I asked for a fresh batch, the guy caught an attitude and said "they're all the same," which tells you everything you need to know about how much they care. Then my order came out wrong on top of it. And the chicken? Super mid. It honestly felt like I was just eating plain, dry chicken breast with zero flavor. They barely put any sauce on it, so it had that bland, almost canned chicken taste. Definitely not what you expect when you're paying for a full meal. To make it worse, I could hear other tables complaining about the same issues, so clearly this isn't just a one-time thing. Go to lunch spot when craving for fajitas. They have a great lunch special with many options. And the portions are enough for 2. One of the visits, we decided to try the ceviche. It tasted fresh and portion was huge. It didn't have enough acidity to it and did need to be seasoned with more salt. The tostadas that came with it tasted like it was on the verge of being stale. -yeah, not pleasant. As any normal dinner, we started off with their deep fried ice cream as an appetizer lol. It did disappoint. Did not come out warm, the flakes on the outside was stale and not crunchy nor hot. My wife and I use to love this place, and I don't know what has changed. 4/14 is my wife's birthday so I decided to take her here, when we arrived lady in front with blonde hair had a messed-up attitude we asked, if possible, to sit on patio she said no I said no problem. I asked do you guys sing happy birthday and can I order in advance to Suprise my wife she told me they do not do that there. Our waitress was nice bur she was rusty. While we are eating our food I see the staff singing happy birthday to someone else and I felt really disappointed because 20 minutes before I was told they don't do that. My wife and I are eating, and another lady is literally taking our plates away while we are still eating. When I told her we are still eating 10 minutes after we are handed boxes. I'll just say shame on me for giving this place a try. The food was horrible, the service was terrible, and I didn't get any value for my money. I will start by saying I grew up on Azteca, and used to love them. I think about the time they closed the locations I loved, was the sign that they were not the same people that opened their doors decades ago. Growing up, we ate the Bellevue location. It probably closed about 1992 and relocated. The food was never the same. We used to also eat at the Eastlake location on lake union, also closed for some time, Totem Lake and the list goes on. This was my first time at this location, and I had heard good things about it over the years, but nothing recently. It honestly may have been the best-looking interior I've seen for an Azteca, but the praise ends there. We ended up here, because our first choice for lunch was closed. I had a lunch special which was soup ad a tostada. First, the glop they put on the table wasn't salsa, it was tomato juice mixed with vinegar and pickled peppers. GROSS! No one in Mexico would call that salsa. The tostada said seasoned ground beef, but it was 100% bland. It tasted like Taco Bell and I don't care what you say, Taco Bell is not Mexican food. The Tortilla Soup actually had a zippy kick and I liked that, but the broth didn't taste like chicken stock and they was so little chicken in the soup, it was an absolute scam. I don't care how many blonde hair blued eye people sit and smile at you, this isn't quality Mexican food, and everyone associated with Azteca should be 100% embarrassed and ashamed that they allowed they name, brand and quality slide to this degree. Now that I have had this experience at multiple locations, it's clear to me that no one here care about their country, original family recipes or legacy. I just got the carne asada burrito for dinner, and it was easily the best plate of food I've ever eaten. And I'm old AND fat, so I've had many. This is not just another US style Mexican restaurant; yes, they have the standards like enchiladas and chimichangas, but they also have a few dishes much more rich and complex. The aforementioned carne asada burrito chief among them, but the Plato Mexicano is also incredible, and the Molcajete also comes to mind. Lamb shank too...so many others. From its original location, now Wizards Casino, to its two decker location now I have never had a bad experience here. I use to come here for every family occasion. Birthdays. Graduations. Came here for a lunch meeting with a coworker. I ordered the Azteca Burger. It came on a huge platter with two sides of the burger buns separated and contents laid out. The patty was a decent size, there was a TON of lettuce, and it also came with a small side of fries. The burger itself was delicious. The beef patty was juicy and the bacon was crisp! I requested grilled onions instead of raw onions and it made a huge difference. They literally gave me enough lettuce for three burgers. Not sure why, but I would've loved to have more fries instead. But again, who wouldn't right? You can look at my photo for reference. Also seen in the photo is a small serving of fries with my burger. I can legitimately count 10-15 pieces of fries. This place is fantastic. Their customer service is fantastic, the food is fantastic, the margaritas are fantastic, and their happy hour menu is fantastic. Oh, and did I mention they're fantastic?? Seriously though, I love the Burien Azteca. Actually, if I've been informed correctly, this was the first Azteca that started them all. (Their headquarters are across the street.) And I don't know about the other Aztecas, but this one has a happy hour menu with $1.00 menu items and discounted drinks. And be sure to get the Macho Ramos Rita (on the rocks, with salt!) with your scrumpdiddlyupmtions. Arguably, it's the best margarita I've ever had. (And HUGE.) Azteca will always hold a place in my heart. I've been going there since before the "new" building opened up, back when it was across the street. It's good is "okay"/so-so. It's not what it used to be, but it's not terrible. I've been coming her for way too long (not complaining) to the point that I do generally always get good customer service because the bar staff recognizes me. That being said, the food is okay. I think for people wanting to have intro-to-Mexican food it's a good place to start. The flavors aren't terrible, but it doesn't taste fresh and I tend to feel extremely heavy afterwards. It's very fatty/greasy in a half-good/half-bad way, good that it helps make it taste good and bad that afterwards you want to block out the remainder of your day because you'll be lethargic. This is such a great Mexican restaurant despite being a chain. We were greeted with big genuine smiles from the staff and had warm chips with salsa within five minutes of walking through the front door. All of our food was delicious and well presented.
