Cesar Salad with salmon I love a good Cesar salad, easy to do without much. The Hardware version, lettuce, out of the bag croutons, sprinkle Parmesan cheese from Costco or some such, some stock marginal dressing, slab salmon on top to wilt lettuce. This is a $45. To go box presentation. Some minimal effort on ingredients and application would help. Suggest chef's go to Elliot's and order a Cesar with blackened salmon. $25 and delicious. Roasted Veggies with salmon, Mostly potato's with carrots and a couple tiny mushrooms, farmed salmon so so. Again, out of the bag potato mix from some frozen food section. We stopped here for brunch while we were on Vashon and were glad to find this jewel. My son got the Burger and ordered it medium rare. He reported it was delicious and cooked perfectly. He also had, in his estimation, the best hot chocolate he ever had. My wife had the breakfast burrito, and I tried a bite as well. It was very good and quite large. I had the Vashon Breakfast and the eggs and hash browns were cooked perfectly. The service was great. I would say that 3.5 stars is more accurate. We were seated promptly and checked in with frequently. Ordered the blueberry gluten free pancakes (1 is $8, 2 is $14) and it came with a very small pat of butter and syrup. The pancake was not my thing, I don't like buckwheat and this pancake tasted more salty. My partner got the fried chicken salad and that was super good, the breading on the chicken was light and crispy, the salad tossed heavily with ranch. Weekend lunch service was good and efficient, which was great!!! and the walls have had a nice coat of off white to brighten up the space. I have notes on the food though: The move to shoestring fries from steak fries deserves a round of applause but... they were over-seasoned (on a scale of "no salt" to McDonalds, they were a Spinal Tap 12, burning my tongue a bit and requiring two or three glasses of water later. Maybe people just eat that much salt now? You decide. Spicy Chicken sandwich was ok but unnecessarily wet and messy as it is sauced with pan drippings; the plate becomes a pool of watery sauce. No time wasted on a reduction or "demi-glace". So much flavor diluted with H2O! As an aside: I remember Mike at the old Sound Foods making Chicken Dijon, which is made with pan drippings, Dijon mustard and dairy. Legend. This is a cool place. Luckily we were seated next to the chimney on a cold day so we were toasty! Our server was very quick to greet and take our order. Despite having visited Vashon Island a handful of times over the years, I finally had the opportunity to dine at The Hardware Store (9/11/21). After taking the ferry from West Seattle/Fauntleroy to Vashon Island, my timing was perfect to find street parking along the main retail area and to stop in for some breakfast. Looks like they serve breakfast, brunch, and lunch. Make sure to check their restaurant website for current scheduling updates. There was a brief wait to get other groups seated, but as an only, I was able to dine at the counter area facing the kitchen area. Lots of activity with items being grilled in the convection oven, the line cook dealing with orders coming in fast and furious. Eggs being cracked, various pots and pans being watched with a careful eye on the range, folks going to and from the other kitchen production area. The restaurant has various seating configurations in the main dining area, bar area, kitchen counter, larger back room, and outdoor seating. There's also well displayed merch at the front host stand and also towards the back adjacent to their art gallery and pastry/espresso machine cafe areas. I had the house salad with Salmon, Blue had the Pear Salad and Lu had the pork souvlaki and Greek salad. Jack the server was fast, friendly and attentive. The food was alright but not super distinctive. TBH I think something other than salad might have been a better choice. Much to be desired after visiting The Hardware Restaurant today. I think the business survives solely because of the lack of other options in small town Vashon. The facility looks decent, and they have indoor/outdoor seating. The bar counter is currently closed due to covid. Service was slow, yet friendly. It was SO hot, with the lack of A/C or any fans. We were told we were waiting on clean dishes before we could receive water. With limited capacity in there, I find that surprising. The biggest turn-off of the night was the fish and chips. The unseasoned, previously frozen, tiny portion was unacceptable. I thought it was a joke, or it was a kids meal. If you look at the other photos on Yelp of fish and chips at the Hardware restaurant, you might agree with me that the recipe and quality has changed as all the photos are different. We will never wait 45 minutes for this food again. Drinks were ordered and gross. The smash burger was decent. The final bill leaves the value of the meal that much more bitter. Stellar experience at the Hardware Store! Our family four went for dinner and really enjoyed the service, the food and the ambience. Christopher was an awesome waiter who anticipated our every need and was so incredibly friendly. Fish and chips, burgers, and Caesar salad along with focaccia bread made for a delicious meal. Heidi at the front greeted me with a huge smile and I was seated promptly. Servers Erica and Christopher were so friendly and helpful with their knowledge of the food and drinks. Stood at the front waiting to be seated for nearly 10 minutes without anyone even acknowledging us. Multiple servers looked at us, then kept walking by and handling their tables with nobody saying anything. Food is unfortunately overpriced for what it is. A basic burger with bacon and fries is $25. My daughter's kids cheeseburger meal, with bacon was $22 and somehow ended up with more fries than my adult meal? After ordering, took about 40 minutes to get my order and my daughters. Asked for a side of ranch from 3 different people and nobody brought any at any point. During this time nobody checked on us, nobody said what the hold up was, nothing. Just left wondering. The "expeditor" in the back was bare hand grabbing multiple peoples foods and changing which plates they go on then working on a touch screen computer then bare handing other peoples food. My meal was $25 which was the cheeseburger with bacon, then I got charged an extra $1....for cheese? Burgers don't come with any condiments. Basic lettuce, pickle, tomato, onion. Fries were pretty basic. I got a Diet Coke and daughter got a strawberry lemonade. All in all, $60 for two cheeseburgers with bacon, fries and drinks. Wish I could find something redeeming about this experience but just couldn't. Should have gone somewhere else for lunch. read more

Switched it to peanuts instead of sunflower seeds, which is cheaper, and my friend is allergic to peanuts. This restaurant used to be the best place to eat on the island with a decent menu and excellent and welcoming customer service. Yet it is now a shadow of its former self. I am grateful for the competing businesses that will now get my business. I remember going there as a kid picking out screws and nails for projects with my father. Sorry, I'm not giving this crew of misfits one more undeserved dollar. This place has poor service, odd hours of operation, peculiar menu, combined with elitist and rude attitudes of some of the staff. Last time I went in with my two teenage girls for a light lunch, the career waitress seemed to be having a tough day, was likely further disappointed that my family didn't fit the "Seattle visitor" stereotype, as none of us had blue hair, visible tattoos or piercings. She was impolite, clunked our dishes down, rapidly followed by the check, felt rushed out. It seemed that she was blaming me and my two girls for her continuous string of poor life decisions that brought her to this misguided horrible place of waiting on our table. Visited on Sunday for brunch and was eager to try as I've heard great things about the menu. I settled on the steak and eggs while my friend had the fried chicken salad. My steak was very flavorful but also a small amount. My friend's salad needed more seasoning on the chicken snd it was on the dry side. For cocktails we ordered a mimosa, old-fashioned and a Bloody Mary. All were very delicious. Was on a ferry run across the Puget Sound and stopped on Vashon Island around supper time. Service was prompt and staff were extremely friendly. We were seated next to the window where we could people watch. Had clam chowder and fried chicken. At first, I was disheartened that there was no meat on the bone nor skin (thinking along the lines of Popeyes or KFC), but the chicken was well breaded and fried. Being a long time resident of 40 years I enjoy supporting local businesses and with THS we have tried and tried again but after tonight I'm over this place. We had been so spoiled when Melinda was running the restaurant because she cared about quality control and quality of the food that kept locals coming back. Not anymore. If you can seriously charge $16 for a kids meal of "parmesan" noodles which was just spaghetti noodles with butter and another $16 for kids chicken strips you're insane. We try and try but when our kid got ridiculously moldy fruit as a side we sent it back only to get more moldy fruit, it's called quality control folks, not here apparently. They offer sprite on the menu as a drink for the kids meal but got charged 6$ for them to ad a cherry and some grenadine to make a Shirley temple. The crab cakes were trash looking like they shoved surimi out of a play-doh machine for $26 and the fish and chips were good because I stole malt vinegar from the neighboring table. All I can say is that it has gone way down hill, we keep trying to support them but damn it's hard with such bad food. When we have family and friends in town, we usually show them around Vashon Island and have lunch there to support local business. We sat down and looked at the Menu and noticed that they only serve Sandwich & Burger around $20 for lunch. If 'substitute' French fries to salad or soup, add $4. We have 4 adults and 3 kids (4, 6, 14 years), and the bill is $238.93 with 20% gratuity included ($36,60). We didn't see on the Menu or website about the 20% gratuity, or we would have gone to another restaurant. With that price for a sandwich and burger lunch?!
