Terrible service, the waitress Violet was completely confused. We waited over 20 minutes for our drinks and over an hour for our food. When the food came it was cold. However the resteraunt did comp our meal so that was good. After being told twice that the meal would be comped the confused waitress still tried to give us a bill. Would not recommend! My wife cant have gluten. So when we go out to eat it involves research and planning. On our day trip to Vashon we decided The Hardware Store was the best option for lunch. We had some delicious lunch cocktails here including the Ronin and a few styles of bloody Mary's. Our waiter was super kind and helpful and said the Ronin was named after his son, which is also the name of our 8 yo son who was dining with us! I love a small world moment on a small island in the giant Pacific Ocean. The table had the spicy chicken sandwich (yum), the clam chowder (good, and these were Rhode Islanders with us!), the monte Christo sandwich (different, in a good way!), the club sandwich (nice with the grilled chicken, and the fries were well done), and a kid's bacon grilled cheese with fries. There may have been second cocktails like a negroni, etc involved in the meal too! We love the history of this space being a hardware store turned restaurant on the corner of small town Vashon. This place is fantastic for gluten free and dairy free. They can make almost any menu item gluten free. The gluten free fish and chips are very good. The ambiance is nice and it's a cute place. They have an amazing banana chocolate pie (that is not gluten free). That is the best part about this restaurant. The prices are too high though. They charge $5 extra to sub sweet potato fries for regular fries and $3 extra for gluten free bread. It doesn't cost them close to $3 for 2 slices of bread. Please don't make extra money off of gluten free people. It makes us feel taken advantage of when you charge so much more for gluten free subs. $1 or so is reasonable to cover the extra cost to the business. read more

Can you leave less than one star? I feel like the, "Hardware Store" should have the hammer brought down on it! I came into town to take my girlfriend to a nice lunch before I flew out (layover from a work trip), and I was absolutely shocked at what happened in the restaurant. This was March 6. We were seated quickly, and treated wonderfully by our actual waitress, a VERY pregnant woman. She was great! We no sooner sit down before I see what I can only assume is a HIGHLY intoxicated man in a plaid shirt literally yelling at one of the chefs. Every second word was the F bomb. The entire restaurant could hear it. When I asked our server about the person, wondering if it was a drunk customer, she very shyly responded, "No, that's our manager, and his family owns the restaurant." I don't work in HR on any level, but is this true? Is this the way to run a restaurant? By screaming obscenities at employees within full view of the customers? The food was okay, unfortunately not worth the price, but also definitely not worth the environment. They seemed a little understaffed, but we're very patient people. The reason I thought this might be a disgruntled customer was that he continued to consume at the bar after we witnessed the incident that I am describing. I feel as though the manager could have helped with a couple of tables if the people in the drink could have stopped and stood up long enough to help out, but that never happened. Slamming plates down, the atmosphere, all of the things, not to mention the price of underwhelming food? Means we will never return. I don't know if this is the norm here, since I've only been there once, but if this were my restaurant? I'd be bollocking if I didn't say I was embarrassed by what I saw. I've been to a few other restaurants on the island, but I've never experienced ANYTHING like this before. Will steer any of my other visiting relatives and friends away from this place. We have seen many iterations of this space, having lived on Vashon Island for almost 30 years. We used to buy seed potatoes there when it was actually a hardware store. This most recent iteration is our favorite, though. The food is consistently good, but what makes us come again and again is our favorite waiter, Christopher. We always ask for him when we make a reservation. He makes us feel like every visit is a celebration with his attention to detail, his repartee, and his generous pours. This is why we meet friends here, bring visitors, have book club gatherings, and come for regular date nights. No one likes to ask for a glass of wine and feel like it is begrudgingly given. My Bloody Mary was perfectly spicy, but I had the BEST meal of our group!! The wedge salad with salmon!! Perfection!! Wowza sooo good! Came over from Tacoma to work a wedding today on a Saturday. On our break we decided to come back into town to eat. The food was excellent. We split the Brussels ... oh myyy yummy! I had cup of chowder ( which I thought was exzuberant at $10) and a Cesar salad. My friend had a wedge salad and she took some of that home and her salad. I ate all mine!! Ordered the blueberry gluten free pancakes (1 is $8, 2 is $14) and it came with a very small pat of butter and syrup. The pancake was not my thing, I don't like buckwheat and this pancake tasted more salty. My partner got the fried chicken salad and that was super good, the breading on the chicken was light and crispy, the salad tossed heavily with ranch. I really like what they've done to it as far as atmosphere , photos and, new paint, seats redone etc. My wife and I went 2 days ago to check out their new renovation. We ordered a burger and a lox & latke The food Could have been great IF it had only been HOT! We sat and waited for our food,had a great waitress (very friendly). Then received this great presentation of food only to find when we began eating that the food was lukewarm! I have to say, I have lived on the island for 20 years I've been here before, and the food has been good, but for some reason they can't get it to you hot. I've noticed in the past that my bacon was cold at breakfast and realized it was due to it being cooked ahead of time (which is 1 reason was stopped going there for breakfast). Cesar Salad with salmon I love a good Cesar salad, easy to do without much. The Hardware version, lettuce, out of the bag croutons, sprinkle Parmesan cheese from Costco or some such, some stock marginal dressing, slab salmon on top to wilt lettuce. This is a $45. To go box presentation. Some minimal effort on ingredients and application would help. Suggest chef's go to Elliot's and order a Cesar with blackened salmon. $25 and delicious. Roasted Veggies with salmon, Mostly potato's with carrots and a couple tiny mushrooms, farmed salmon so so. Again, out of the bag potato mix from some frozen food section. We stopped here for brunch while we were on Vashon and were glad to find this jewel. My son got the Burger and ordered it medium rare. He reported it was delicious and cooked perfectly. Wow! Just a really delicious, top quality dinner enjoyed on a recent Friday evening! Fabulous flavors in salad dressing, sauces, everything was top notch and very gourmet. Stopped for a quick bite. They only had their bar menu available with 5-6 items on it. I have a soy allergy so I asked the first guy and he said no they don't use it but would check to make sure. Had the second waiter double check after the first guy didn't come back and it turns out they do use it in their fryers. One item available for a non red meat eater that wasn't fried, the ceviche. That's fine. No problem. As someone with a soy allergy, I come across that a lot. I'm very accustomed to navigating a menu around it. It also had an aioli with it which would likely have soy (mayo usually does unless made in house). So I asked for the ceviche, no aioli, no tostadas (they are fried in the soybean oil). The waiter said that's just going to be a small amount of food for the $18. I said that's fine, I understand, but I can't eat anything else on your menu, it's ok that it's not a lot of food. My husband and mom even said it's fine!! I don't know if he thought I would complain, but he was so rude about the fact that it was going to be such a small amount of food. He kept arguing and arguing with us about ordering it. I understood! I'm not an idiot, I just have a food allergy. And I was starving and they had zero other options. Once you've told me the first time what a small portion it will be, and I still want it, please just let me order it!! We just got up and left. Just terrible service. Unfortunate. However, the lunch menu is fairly limited and the prices are a bit insane for what you're getting. $25 for a basic burger? $24 for the Buddha bowl WITHOUT A PROTEIN?! I get that Vashon is technically an island (very short ferry ride), but you're not in the middle of an ocean, nor do you have a view. The food is at least 25-40% priced too high for what it is. The ambiance is classy but preserves many of the original hardware store decors. The hostess stand features the original wooden nail and screw bins. The hardware is all gone now, replaced by delicious food. Today I'm here for weekend brunch! Steak and eggs, but many of the menu items feature Northwest Salmon. The specials are always interesting. My flatiron steak was Cooked Perfectly medium rare. Served on a bed of ranchero sauce with 2 over medium eggs and house potatoes. Delicious! The service is decidedly small town friendly. And the bartendress will happily strike up a conversation with you. The restaurant is also great for lunch or dinner, but is not open every day of the week. Despite having visited Vashon Island a handful of times over the years, I finally had the opportunity to dine at The Hardware Store (9/11/21). After taking the ferry from West Seattle/Fauntleroy to Vashon Island, my timing was perfect to find street parking along the main retail area and to stop in for some breakfast. Looks like they serve breakfast, brunch, and lunch. Make sure to check their restaurant website for current scheduling updates. There was a brief wait to get other groups seated, but as an only, I was able to dine at the counter area facing the kitchen area. Lots of activity with items being grilled in the convection oven, the line cook dealing with orders coming in fast and furious. Eggs being cracked, various pots and pans being watched with a careful eye on the range, folks going to and from the other kitchen production area. The restaurant has various seating configurations in the main dining area, bar area, kitchen counter, larger back room, and outdoor seating. There's also well displayed merch at the front host stand and also towards the back adjacent to their art gallery and pastry/espresso machine cafe areas. Service was efficient, especially with the initial onslaught upon opening. Breakfast was tasty and guaranteed a good base before attending a wine/sabrage class at a nearby farm. read more

This is a cool place. Luckily we were seated next to the chimney on a cold day so we were toasty! Our server was very quick to greet and take our order. Checked on us just the right amount of times (and not when our mouths were full!). The fish and chips were crispy and fish tasted really fresh. Not a big fan of their tartar sauce (a little runny). Much to be desired after visiting The Hardware Restaurant today. I think the business survives solely because of the lack of other options in small town Vashon. The facility looks decent, and they have indoor/outdoor seating. The bar counter is currently closed due to covid. Service was slow, yet friendly. It was SO hot, with the lack of A/C or any fans. We were told we were waiting on clean dishes before we could receive water. With limited capacity in there, I find that surprising. The biggest turn-off of the night was the fish and chips. The unseasoned, previously frozen, tiny portion was unacceptable. I thought it was a joke, or it was a kids meal. If you look at the other photos on Yelp of fish and chips at the Hardware restaurant, you might agree with me that the recipe and quality has changed as all the photos are different. We will never wait 45 minutes for this food again. Drinks were ordered and gross. The smash burger was decent. The final bill leaves the value of the meal that much more bitter.
