Incredible, simply incredible , best Brussel sprouts I've ever eaten, great service, incredible quality

Visited on Sunday for brunch and was eager to try as I've heard great things about the menu. I settled on the steak and eggs while my friend had the fried chicken salad. My steak was very flavorful but also a small amount. My friend's salad needed more seasoning on the chicken snd it was on the dry side. For cocktails we ordered a mimosa, old-fashioned and a Bloody Mary. All were very delicious. Definitely will try some of the lower priced items next time as it has a great vibe an excellent place to watch the games. read more

I'm new to the island and have been here a few times already with fantastic service. The food and service is absolutely wonderful. Heidi at the front greeted me with a huge smile and I was seated promptly. Servers Erica and Christopher were so friendly and helpful with their knowledge of the food and drinks. The Pear Salad is amazing!! I didn't want to knock off any stars because I'm certain I'll be coming back here for years. it was relativity busy and bustling with people, there was someone in the kitchen who seemed to be either yelling or just talking so loudly with a deep voice and it was a bit distracting. I could hear what he was saying from a back booth. That's my only critique but I'll be back very soon because the vibe of this place is amazing!! read more

This restaurant used to be the best place to eat on the island with a decent menu and excellent and welcoming customer service. Yet it is now a shadow of its former self. I am grateful for the competing businesses that will now get my business. I remember going there as a kid picking out screws and nails for projects with my father. Sorry, I'm not giving this crew of misfits one more undeserved dollar. This place has poor service, odd hours of operation, peculiar menu, combined with elitist and rude attitudes of some of the staff. Last time I went in with my two teenage girls for a light lunch, the career waitress seemed to be having a tough day, was likely further disappointed that my family didn't fit the "Seattle visitor" stereotype, as none of us had blue hair, visible tattoos or piercings. She was impolite, clunked our dishes down, rapidly followed by the check, felt rushed out. It seemed that she was blaming me and my two girls for her continuous string of poor life decisions that brought her to this misguided horrible place of waiting on our table. Wanted to enjoy this place as the atmosphere seemed nice, but too much wrong. Went there with my 5 1/2 year old daughter. Stood at the front waiting to be seated for nearly 10 minutes without anyone even acknowledging us. Multiple servers looked at us, then kept walking by and handling their tables with nobody saying anything. Food is unfortunately overpriced for what it is. A basic burger with bacon and fries is $25. My daughter's kids cheeseburger meal, with bacon was $22 and somehow ended up with more fries than my adult meal? After ordering, took about 40 minutes to get my order and my daughters. Asked for a side of ranch from 3 different people and nobody brought any at any point. During this time nobody checked on us, nobody said what the hold up was, nothing. Just left wondering. The "expeditor" in the back was bare hand grabbing multiple peoples foods and changing which plates they go on then working on a touch screen computer then bare handing other peoples food. My meal was $25 which was the cheeseburger with bacon, then I got charged an extra $1....for cheese? Burgers don't come with any condiments. Basic lettuce, pickle, tomato, onion. Fries were pretty basic. I got a Diet Coke and daughter got a strawberry lemonade. All in all, $60 for two cheeseburgers with bacon, fries and drinks. Wish I could find something redeeming about this experience but just couldn't. Should have gone somewhere else for lunch. read more

Was on a ferry run across the Puget Sound and stopped on Vashon Island around supper time. Service was prompt and staff were extremely friendly. We were seated next to the window where we could people watch. Had clam chowder and fried chicken. At first, I was disheartened that there was no meat on the bone nor skin (thinking along the lines of Popeyes or KFC), but the chicken was well breaded and fried. The chicken was not dry and absolutely delicious! Brussels sprouts were nicely roasted and had great consistency. The potatoes were nice and smooth. read more

bought some brussels sprouts, kind of pricey for what it is, but was delicious in the past. Came with sunflower seeds and a balsamic reduction. I get it, Those ingredients are expensive. Didn't mind spending a little more since it was tasty too. I went to order it without looking at the menu, which I guess is my bad, to split with my friend. Switched it to peanuts instead of sunflower seeds, which is cheaper, and my friend is allergic to peanuts. The price didn't go down, but the quality ingredients sure did. $23 plus tip for this. definitely not worth it, and didn't taste all that great. read more

We had a bit of a mixed bag here. The service from Lora was great and the food came out within a reasonable time. I loved the Clam Chowder, though my wife didn't because it was so thick. The thickness didn't bother me because the taste was awesome! What was disappointing was the Old Fashioned Burger. We heard and read so many rave reviews, we just felt it was flat. The meat was a bit tasteless and there were simply too many onions. While the place certainly maintains the hardware store vibe, the food just didn't come together for us. read more

This place was a pretty typical restaurant made for the convenience of tourist, who visit Vashon Island. The service was great and reminded us of a home owned diner. We ordered fish and chips, spicy chicken burger, and a side of clam chowder. Nothing really memorable and the food lacked luster. The fish and chips were heavily battered but were greasy. The clam chowder had a hint of tartness almost like ketchup that was not a flavor note I liked in chowder. The chicken sandwich was a bit dry. Being a long time resident of 40 years I enjoy supporting local businesses and with THS we have tried and tried again but after tonight I'm over this place. We had been so spoiled when Melinda was running the restaurant because she cared about quality control and quality of the food that kept locals coming back. Not anymore. If you can seriously charge $16 for a kids meal of "parmesan" noodles which was just spaghetti noodles with butter and another $16 for kids chicken strips you're insane. We try and try but when our kid got ridiculously moldy fruit as a side we sent it back only to get more moldy fruit, it's called quality control folks, not here apparently. They offer sprite on the menu as a drink for the kids meal but got charged 6$ for them to ad a cherry and some grenadine to make a Shirley temple. The crab cakes were trash looking like they shoved surimi out of a play-doh machine for $26 and the fish and chips were good because I stole malt vinegar from the neighboring table. All I can say is that it has gone way down hill, we keep trying to support them but damn it's hard with such bad food. Reply how you want but it's obvious that management preys on tourist season making that money on one crappy service knowing they won't come back and they'll sucker in the next group from off island on the next sunny day. read more

It was more than an hour wait the day after thanksgiving around 1pm. We were starving! And our patience was rewarded. The Hardware Store was fabulous! I had the best burger in my life and at nearly 71, I've eaten many, many burgers - perfectly cooked and seasoned - truly the best! Great fries as well! The Hardware Store is one of those classic Vashon places that you are going to eat at if you spend any kind of time on the island. It's got longevity, consistency, comfort for a group, good service and classic American bistro food with options for all of the "frees" in your life (gluten, meat etc). As the name suggests, it was once the island's original hardware store and the oldest building there. It probably has the best ambiance of any place on Vashon, which tends towards "eclectic ramshackle" in most other places. There is a nice bar area, wood floors, lofty ceilings and a sizable dining room. The kitchen is open and adds a warmth to the vibe. Their outside awning reads "great good food!" I would say "good good food." You can visit for any meal of the day and my latest was breakfast. We had a several items on the menu: the standard egg/potato/meat plate, sautéed greens with eggs, blueberry buckwheat pancakes (GF), and a house made strawberry scone. The breakfast plate wasn't special in anyway, but the greens, pancakes and scone were ample and very good. We had leftovers, which was nice since our breakfast bill with coffee came to $85 before tip. Are there more exciting places to eat on the island? Depending on the day/time/year, yes. But who is always going to be there for you? That's right, this place. read more

We got to the island late on a Friday evening on our way to a weekend craft retreat. This was one of the only places still open with good reviews. I decided to order the fried chicken and share it with my friend since it was late, and that was a good choice. The chicken was moist and crunchy (no bones), the roasted Brussel sprouts were superb, and the mashed potatoes were fresh and creamy. The plates were fairly pricy, but I can understand that for being on a small island. The clam chowder was expensive for a small cup and was mostly liquid, but it could have been that way because that was all that was left an hour before closing. We were hoping for much better from the reviews. The service was fine and the place was fairly loud, but cozy with the candles on the tables. I might go there next year and share another meal with some friends on the way to camp. We agreed that it was another overpriced and overcharged meal from Hardware Store restaurant. When we have family and friends in town, we usually show them around Vashon Island and have lunch there to support local business. We had lunch at Hardware Store restaurant in Sept 2024, and it was a totally different experience when we're there two days ago. We sat down and looked at the Menu and noticed that they only serve Sandwich & Burger around $20 for lunch. If 'substitute' French fries to salad or soup, add $4. We have 4 adults and 3 kids (4, 6, 14 years), and the bill is $238.93 with 20% gratuity included ($36,60). We didn't see on the Menu or website about the 20% gratuity, or we would have gone to another restaurant. With that price for a sandwich and burger lunch?! We saw another review that they charge 18% service charge for take out! read more

Another visit to the so, so THS Restaurant. My burger was ok, but my spouses fish and chips were disappointing. She said one piece of the 2 piece dinner was "nasty", either old frozen fish or way overcooked. She wasn't sure. There weren't any sides, coleslaw etc with her dinner. The service wasn't great at all. Server forgot my salad, then asked if I wanted it after main dish was served even though I'd said at the order I wanted it before the main dinner. We've been going to THS since it opened and except in the early years, it continues to disappoint. I understand the off islanders going here, it's one of the only games in town, but to spend over $100 on a crappy fish and chips and a burger, 1 wine and 1 beer, come on. I'll wait another year or two before I go back to dinner. Not in a hurry to return even being stuck on the island. I'll go the the Thriftway deli next time!!! read more

Can't say enough good things about this place. So many delicious food options that are safe for celiacs (we're talking gluten free buttermilk fried chicken, made in a separate frier!) Yummy drinks, beautiful outside dining options, and the warmest/most personable service. What more could one ask for? Only stayed on the island for two days, this was the first place we ate, and the last. Both times were equally lovely! Highly highly recommend, especially if you're gluten free. read more

If I could give it no stars I would. It was incredibly loud in the building and the hospitality was horrible. We waited there for at least 10 minutes with people standing at the front desk and not saying a word to us. When we were sat down the menu was very limited. I had ordered the buttermilk pancakes while my grandma ordered a hamburger with fries. When we got our food the pancakes were in an unhealthy portion size that was impossible to eat. The outside of the pancake was burnt while the inside was mushy and under cooked. My grandmothers fries were semi cold and seemed frozen not fresh. The burger was sloppy as well. All in all unless you want an unpleasant experience I would not recommend coming here. Even the flies wanted to get out of the building. We celebrated Fathers Day at the Hardware Store Restuarant on Vashon Island right smack in the middle of all the action on the main street through town. The restaurant was packed Sunday at noon so we chose to eat in a new addition to this long established location, its adjacent (part of the same property) called "The Yard". evidently this addition is very recent and we heard the restaurant was under new management as well. Five of us arrived at noon, the Yard had just opened. Its a cozy outdoor full bar that looks like its been there for years, there's a retractable roof for rain days. We heard they have had live music here and more is planned for the summer! We were presented with a bar menu and a sample of a blended "boozy" Pina colada which was excellent. The theme is BBQ and a large smoker is in full view smoking away with pork shoulder, the scents were intoxicating. Paul was running the bar and was attentive and friendly also serving our food. The menu is an enticing eclectic mix of delicious options, we basically ordered one of everything, it was ALL fantastic. The chef obviously knows what he's doing. We had the Brisket sandwich, the pulled pork sandwich with a warm lovely bun that held together perfectly, both were bursting with smoky flavor. At our table we tried the corn salad (fab) there was beautifully prepared rockfish tostada, ceviche's, gourmet tots and more. Every dish was scrumptious and beautifully presented. We ate everything in site and very much enjoyed the casual friendly vibe. This is a great addition for Vashon Island. Nick, the new General manager was everywhere and couldn't have been more helpful and friendly, we will be back next time on the island!! read more

A waiter (not even the one serving our table) yelled at the guests at our table at the top of his lungs. A restaurant customer walking by even said "Wow. That was unbelievable." In all my years dining out, I've never experienced such a thing. I've never even observed or overheard a waiter shout at restaurant customers. Multiple generations of my family has been coming here for years through different owners and different chefs. The interior of place looks fancy. However, we took to go die to covid. The adjucent tables were occupied. There was no social distancing. The staff wrote masks and was polite. The chicken burger was ok. Nothing great, nothing bad. The salad was also Ok. The croutons are excellent. But that does not justify the price. The quantity was just sufficient. Started off by having to wait 10 minutes even though it was past lunch, there were 4 booths open, and nobody else waiting to be seated. Obviously not a huge deal, but worth mentioning. The service was good and the restaurant is clean, but the food was decent at best with extremely undersized portions. Overpriced to say the least. Spent $60 on a lunch for two and we both left hungry. THS has always been inconsistent with portion size from day to day, but to portray a slider as an entree burger is ridiculous. If you order a large bowl of soup, expect to receive a cup size (see attached pic). I used to frequent this place, but after sub par experiences over a year ago I swore I wouldn't go back. I was hopeful that things might have changed, but unfortunately they haven't. I won't make the same mistake again. I held off posting this review because I try to be understanding of local businesses during these challenging times, but I left there feeling like I had $40 stolen from me. Stopped in for lunch with wife and friend on a Saturday afternoon.  We were hungry that always make food taste better. Wife had fish n chips, friend and I both had the cod fish sandwich. Love a good fish sandwich. They were excellent. Fish was fresh and perfectly cooked. Wife said the same for her fish. It was served on a soft bun, which I prefer and enjoyed. The restaurant was busy and they had people spread out.  Staff was super friendly.  Interesting decor, had some cool art displayed in the back room and hallway. Street parking only. There's a parking lot up the alley way behind the restaurant, that is easy walking distance away. read more

How I heard of this place: On our first overnight visit to the Island to visit some old friends, we were introduced to their go-to brunch spot. And here we are! Type of cuisine: "Not just any restaurant, but one that would serve 'great good food', perfectly prepared and gracefully presented, the ingredients locally-sourced, organic and all-natural, hormone-free, and in many cases gluten-free -- and would do so from breakfast through dinner, seven days a week." Ambiance: "...a community gathering place that embodied the unique spirit and character of the island and the people of Vashon -- relaxed, informal, welcoming, caring....The Hardware Store is a place where regulars are embraced and strangers become friends, a place for friends to visit together, for milestones to be celebrated, and for all customers to feel at home." What I ordered: Signature Omelet's ($12 each) for each of the three of us, we all enjoyed the Havarti, bacon, spinach and basil pesto stuffed omelet with signature potatoes and selection of toast. Two drip coffees, one each for my dining companions, and a special treat for me, a Mocha ($4.50) to warm up my insides on this chilly morning. For our little one, we were pleased to see a mini selection of Kid Sized Breakfasts, each priced at $5.50. Our little gourmand selected pancakes and bacon, his breakfast of champions. What I loved: The creamy, dark chocolatey mocha hit the spot right off! The pesto stuffed eggs, with crispy bacon and gooey Havarti truly made for a perfect first meal of our day. Why I loved it: A fun, vibrant, neighborhood joint, bustling as everyone on the island - or so it seemed - was ready to meet and greet their neighbors over a cuppa java and hot breakfast. This place used to BLOW. But thankfully they've cleaned up their act recently for the better. But man, back in covid times, ordering takeout from this place was rolling the dice on if they were gonna burn your burger to a black crisp or not. Horrendous. Nowadays they've improved their food quality and presentation by leaps and bounds. Pricey yes, but worth it in my opinion. This restaurant also has a special place in my heart for the kids slider burgers they used to make when I was younger which are sadly no longer with us. The atmosphere is seriously great too! The wood colors in contrast to the walls combined with the tastefully dim candle lighting, the open kitchen and of course the BIG CLOCK! I love the nostalgia I get every time I walk in from all my times here back then. 4 stars for nostalgia and food quality but not 5 because I can never forgive how they absolutely murdered my take out back then! 2020-21 were the dark ages for this place and I'm so glad they returned to form! read more

When looking up places to eat on Vashon Island, this place kept popping up. I did not make reservations so when we got there on a Saturday morning, there was a 30 minute wait. This place was popping with tourists and locals. It seemed to be a popular breakfast, brunch, and lunch place. There are tons of items on the menu to choose from. We ordered the clam chowder, a burger, and a salad with chicken breast on top. The clam chowder was my favorite. Nothing special about it but it was like your usual comforting creamy clam chowder a lot of places serve with lots of hearty ingredients. The chunks of potatoes particularly stood out. The burger was giant and came with shoe string fries. It was cooked just like I ordered and had a ton of fries on the side. Overall this is a nice casual place to grab a bite to eat. The menu caters to everyone and you will find something to eat from the list of options. read more
