Tides is on our list as one of our favorite places to grab a meal. The tavern is 21 plus all of the time so make sure that you get a sitter and leave the littles at home. Every time we've gone to Tides, it's been a great experience. The staff is very friendly and professional. The space is large and they offer indoor and outdoor seating when the weather cooperates. You can even get to this place by boat as they have a dock that you can pull up to from the Gig Harbor. You can choose from a large variety of beers, wines and spirits and they have a few TV's that are usually showing sporting events. The menu is well rounded, and they offer a plethora of items to suit most moods, but the specials are usually where you'll find something divine. If you're looking for good fish-n-chips, look no further and Tides makes all of their own sauces from scratch! In my book, that's HUGE! This place is always packed so be prepared to wait a bit for your table, but they text you when it's available so that you can go out and enjoy the views of the harbor and walk down the docks if you like. We went here once before and had a great experience but this last time we visited it was just okay. It was beautiful outside and had a nice view of the water so the atmosphere while loud, was very pleasant! We ordered a pound of fries with tartar sauce, the Greek Salad with grilled Halibut (dressing on the side) and a half Caesar salad with grilled Halibut. Our server asked us if we wanted the fries to come out first and we said yes, that would be great! Then shortly after, our salad comes out ...before we saw any fries. The server asked if everything looked good right after our food was dropped off and we said yes, but we never got the fries. He then apologized and said that was weird and would check to see where they were. No big deal. Eventually the fries came out. Our salads were good (for the most part) and halibut was delicious. Then I ordered a Diet Pepsi but it was apparent that our waiter had forgotten it, as we were getting full by the time he came back around to check on us again. At that point I figured it wasn't even worth asking for. So we got some boxes to pack up the food. Then as I was boxing up my salad I noticed that it actually had the dressing on it, it was just pooled at the bottom of the bowl. However the top of the salad had no dressing on it and it was so huge I never got past the no dressing portion of it until I was boxing it up. It was very strange! It was almost as though they made the salad with the dressing mixed in and instead of remaking it, they just put more of the undressed ingredients on top? This came to me as a recommendation as a good place for lunch with a nice view. Never again, it was terrible. I got there around 11:30; they opened at 11. Must be popular with the locals, because the patio was packed when I got there. Not mad about it, because I got a window seat and didn't have to deal with the heat and direct sun, as there's no umbrellas on the deck. The views were very nice. The staff is not very friendly, didn't get greeted, they just asked how many. It was a busy Saturday morning for lunch rush. For a place like this, they really need AT LEAST a couple of Bussers and Food Runners to keep the service running smoothly. Service was very slow, the Servers did everything (except write the orders down). My order took forever and was also wrong because the Server didn't have a pad to write anything down. After all that, I had hoped the food would at least be good, but I was wrong. I tried a few different things, and was surprised they didn't have a raw bar. The calamari was either freezer burned or left in the fryer too long; basically disintegrating into crumbs when you tried to eat any of it. The Chicken Parm pizza was terrible, the crust was undercooked, the toppings were strange; it looked like it had shrimp on it, which I'm allergic to. I ordered a crab BLAT on Rye, it came out on Pita bread (barely any crab), and by that time I had already been there an hour and 40 minutes and just didn't want to deal with waiting another 30 minutes for them to remake it and it still suck. I had them ox it up and got the check which also took forever, paid the tab, and left. Terrible place unless you're a drinker. The chowder was tasty but I felt it was way overpriced for the small cup. My service was okay but not as attentive as I've had in the past. Next time I will sit at the bar which is usually the better service for me. The ambiance was good and the location is perfect. For whatever reason, we find it most magical in the midst of the fog and winter rains. We love to go explore the surrounding area and enjoy the food the Gig has to offer. Tides was the first plae we ever ate at in Gig and they did not disappoint. Parking is easy, which is a consideration when you drive a large truck that doesn't fit in most standard spots. The food is really good, we have never had anything we havent enjoyed. It doesn't matter if you are sharing or doing singular meals, it's always good. We had a server change halfway, and I think we caught the first server either at the end of her shift or on a bad day because it felt like our service was a little rushed. Known for its direct access to the dock, anyone can dock their boat and drop in for breakfast, lunch, dinner or just a drink from the full bar! What a total disappointment! First we were given grief by the host when we asked (before ordering food) to move from a center table to a window table that became available. Our waitress (not the host) said it was OK to move. Then our Prime rib sandwich was basically bread with a couple of slivers of "meat". We paid extra for cheese & extra for additional au jus. The sandwich was tiny. The server should have been embarrassed to put it on the table. The au jus had no flavor. The sandwich had no flavor. The whole thing was unpleasant. We've driven past Tides Tavern many times over the past few years on day trips to or through Gig Harbor. We'd never stopped though, until December 13 after enjoying the Poulsbo Yacht Club Lighted Ships Parade as we were looking for a festive waterfront dinner option. Tides Tavern was so much better than we anticipated I regret that it took us years to visit. It's a fun sports bar, family owned, and the family clearly has a great deal of pride in this thriving business. The building is over 100 years old, but extremely well maintained. Despite it being busy, we were seated promptly and our server was a cheerful, friendly young woman (I can't stress enough how genuinely warm and welcoming the server was). As great as the service was, the food was next level great. I had the halibut fish and chips, substituting a salad for the chips (because it's Christmas and I'm trying to balance out the inevitable excessive calories). It was honestly, objectively, I've eaten this dish countless times before, the BEST battered and fried fish I have EVER eaten. Typing this makes me want to drive back to Gig Harbor and order another plate of it. The batter was just thick enough to coat the chunky piece of halibut, seasoned perfectly, not greasy, crisp and yet also tender. What put it into absolutely next level perfection was the house made tartar sauce along with it. Perfection. Every bit was perfection. Even the salad was way above average, with a mixture of very fresh baby greens, not some lame iceberg lettuce nonsense. Impressive in the dead of winter at a sports bar and grill. My husband had the special, lasagna soup. I'm intrigued to see what future specials they have, because this was unusal yet extremely good. I can't explain it except that if a really tasty Italian soup and a perfect lasagna had a baby, that'd be this, in a bowl. You must have the garlic herb bread also, to sop up every bit of the tasty goodness. I know that eating out has become expensive, and it's no longer an easy decision to spend way more money than you would on relatively the same food prepared at home. I'm a pretty good cook myself, but I can't make beer battered fish this good. The quality of the food and the services at Tides Tavern was worth the cost. Everything about our experience was delightful, the cheerful young woman serving us, the food itself, the warm happy atmosphere. It was the perfect cap to the evening at the nearby Christmas boat parade. Don't wait until next Christmas to visit Tides Tavern though.
