Man's greatest folly is his delusion that he can conquer nature. Herein I provide anecdotal evidence to that end - a man, his nascent business but an ambitious extension of himself, has enrolled to provide many central Texans the unnatural comforts of chill air, ne'ery to be seen an Austin summer. It was a bright morning. The air, heavy as maple syrup on my Waffle House hotcakes, lazily wet my brow, beckoning to all, as if a Sunday sermon, the dire extent of my need. The unit to my three-bedroom-two-bathroom central Austin bungalow had given up. This was a fatal draw, and I knew as such. The syrupy sugar did nothing to relieve my pain, though my synapses were now firing overtime. A memory - fleeting as a hummingbird on a midsummer morn - was there and gone, the presence and the absence both filling and voiding my quest for resolve. "If you want to be The Coolest, you have to call The Coolest." And so I did. He was a ragged fellow, the man who called himself "Air LeGare." At six-foot-eight and 13 stone, there was no doubt he was forged for the battlefield or rugby pitch; perhaps both. Despite his titanous appearance, he had a warm smile, a soothing aura. It couldn't have been more prescriptive for this harried and hopeless homeowner in the searing Texas heat. With a bit of obsequious wit - enough to make an Irishman blush - he executed our contract on a blue chip unit, labor, and interest-free financing. The very next day, the deed was done. I can't say my sweat dried immediately, but the panting white Labrador that sauntered by my modest porch on that late August afternoon could have lapped more condensation from a cactus. I was cool, and for the first time in 24 hours, I was calm. Humans are magnificent. We toil and tool our way out of our troubles, in the hopes of a less circumspect existence. The difficulty of which goes unnoticed, often. The journey to our cool and comfort is overlooked, and, if done correctly, is properly lost to the memory. Our air conditioned worlds, the new normal; the Texas summer, waiting to waste us. Mark and his team at The Coolest are the mere middleman in our opportunistic time on this planet. There are a billion stars, and each one shines more brightly to some other. But in Central Texas, we will always know who is The Coolest. I know this time is hard for a lot of companies. I know sales are down, I know it can be scary not knowing what comes. Some companies out there are handling the changes well and adjusting others are in panic mode. Last week I had an incident with a company in panic mode but I was lucky enough to know honest people in the industry. Last week my landlord called and asked to set up a annual check in for our AC unit and get it ready for the hot summer months that are coming. We set it up, because of the corona-virus the technician never came inside. Our AC has been working great, with no problems. So to my surprise my landlord calls back frantic because the technician told her the AC compressor and unit are going out, he isn't sure if its still under warranty but it probably isn't, and she will need a new one but they have a great deal for 12k going on right now with financing options! A little confused she asked if I knew any one else in town that I trusted to take a second look at it. I immediately called Mark LeGare and his team at The Coolest - Heating and Air Conditioning. They set up a second opinion call and were out later that day. James Chelette came out and quickly realized every single thing from the compressor being broken to the condenser going out were lies, but also he was able to find out my landlord was still in warranty for the whole unit with a quick phone call. Even if there was something wrong with either of those parts, she would not have needed a whole new unit. Strand Brothers Service Experts took a look at something, without even coming inside the house to check the rest of the unit, and tried to get a $12,000 dollar sale on my landlord during a pandemic. James had me come outside with him, while keeping social distancing, and walked me through every test and showed me what he was doing and explaining everything. I never even saw the other guys face, he just expected that we would believe what he was saying, with no proof and our landlord would finance a new system. I understand companies are hurting, sales are down, but lying to people who trust you as a company is NOT the way to go about it. She had been a customer of theirs for over 10 years. Once she turned down their "great deal" and let them know she was getting a second opinion, she has not heard a thing from them. My landlord is extremely grateful for Mark, James and the entire Coolest team for their honesty and integrity even during a pandemic. My old AC stopped working a little over a year ago in the heat of our ever painful summer, and that was when I first was recommended The Coolest to replace my old unit. Everyone I've talked to from the Coolest has been incredibly nice, knowledgeable, and quick to respond. I've worked with Mark practically every step of the way from determining that my old unit was in need of a grave - to finding the right replacement - all the way up to today in figuring out why I am having some hiccups with the new system. He's been amazing with being able to schedule in last minute appointments so I'm not suffering in what feels like Satan's taint bc my AC isn't working (which I should probably mention is more due to the poor design of my apartment rather than my awesome-and-still-pretty-new AC unit). Seriously, never have I come across an AC company that's able to make same day appointments happen during summer in Austin! Our really old HVAC unit (1989!) finally kicked the bucket mid-August 2021. We'd known its time was coming, but had been putting off replacing because it's such a workhorse and they really don't make things like they used to. Of course it goes out during the hottest month of the year. The Coolest came out and got us cool again within a day! Mark, the owner, was super-responsive and patiently answered all my questions (I ask a lot of questions). His guys worked hard all day getting the new unit installed in our super-tight, overheated attic space and will come back to check the heating when it gets cold. I've also had a few questions since the works been done and they've always followed up promptly. They're located in the St Elmo industrial area in south Austin and were also the least expensive out of 3 quotes because they don't have the overhead of the bigger companies. Even tho they are smaller, they've been around for 5 years and on Austin Energy's contractor list for rebates, so I feel confident they'll be around if there's an issue. A couple of years ago, we set out to renovate a 1930s house that had never had air conditioning. Working within the existing structure was challenging and we quickly came to the conclusion that a mini-split system would be our best option for the retrofit installation. I met with a few companies but was impressed by Mark's knowledge about the various mini-split options and his willingness to suggest options to keep the project cost down. Due in part to some good ideas he had to streamline the install, his bid was the best value and we went ahead and signed. The job was not an easy one, as we had to figure out a way to make each refrigerant and drain line work within the existing framing. They figured it out nonetheless and the system has been functioning well since it was installed. We ran into some unrelated complications during construction that caused an almost yearlong delay between The Coolest having completed the rough-in installation and us getting power to the house so they could hook everything up and complete the install. Mark was exceedingly patient during this time, both in terms of waiting on the final installment and storing the equipment for us until we were ready to proceed. It was a hot blistering July day in Austin, Texas when our AC decided to die last week. The Coolest was the 3rd company we interviewed. Mark Legare, Owner and Operator responded to our call promptly, had his technicians out the same day and they diagnosed the issues with and scotch taped our old system together so we could be cool through the night. He met with us and presented as honest and straight talking. We signed up for a Bryant Evolution Extreme and installation started at 8AM the next morning. After 17 long years, it was time to replace my HVAC in the middle of Austin's sweltering heat wave. I reached out to around 7 companies and was given The Coolest as one of the contacts from one of the neighbors. Reece did the initial assessment, climbed up on the roof 3 times to take very specific measurements. He confirmed the same day which model would be required and I had my first quote in hand before he left. Bianca helped with all of the coordination, scheduling, and paperwork. I just finished working with with the coolest! This was the most positive experience I have ever had was able to get new ductwork, insulation and HVAC unit all done in one day. Reese came out about a week prior and was extremely consultative and aware of what I was looking for and provided various different options to get the job done. I asked The Coolest to take a look at my HVAC system since I just purchased a new home and wanted a bit more instruction on how to maintain the heating and air conditioning. Mark was able to come out the next day and give me a great tutorial on how to effectively save energy with my unit, as well as maintenance techniques and signs as to when a problem may be on the horizon. It was the end of a Mon workday about 3:30. I checked Yelp and called several co.'s that looked familiar to see the earliest I could get service, and all were booked up the rest of the week!
