DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS COMPANY. They do not properly identify what is needed for a successful install, and do not properly address issues when they arise. Sorry for the long review...but please read on to hear my horror story with this sorry excuse of a company. I don't normally write reviews (good or bad), but my poor experience with this company cannot go unheard. I feel obligated to warn others of their frankly criminal business practices. I originally called them out to take a look at my old HVAC that was no longer producing cold air. They identified the Freon was low and filled it back up. Worked well for a bit, but then got low again...indicating their was a leak in the system. The unit was so old, we decided to replace the unit instead of fixing it. The new unit was installed, but not without issue. I chose what they described as their go-to brand - American Standard. Apparently their technicians do not know how to install their go-to brand, because it took several days and several different technicians to get the install completed. A year later, the unit began tripping the breaker any time it went to the 2nd stage. Took them 3 days to come out (when approaching triple digit temperatures), charged $150 service fee and $450 in parts and labor to add a capacitor to the setup (a $50 part and about 10 minutes of labor). Did not fix the problem. Tech came out again, and said it seemed to be an issue with the breaker and that I needed to call an electrician to diagnose and solve the problem. Ended up paying $300 for an electrician to come out. When he took a look at the install, he was flabbergasted. He could not believe what he was seeing! He identified the unit was installed on an aluminum electrical line, that was severely undersized for the unit installed. He said no respectable company would EVER do this kind of shotty work. He said replacing the electrical line would likely cost a couple thousand dollars, since it was on the other side of the house. When I called Smart Air to let them know of the situation, the dispatcher was very dismissive. She said she would have their lead install tech follow up with me, but of course I never heard anything back... That is when they went dark despite several additional attempts on my part, and broke communication with me entirely. I ended up having to pay an electrician to run the new line on my own dollar - several thousand dollars - and now I'm finally back up and running. read more

This review is long overdue, because we've had consistently great service from Smart Air. Ten years ago Shane designed and installed a new HVAC system that dramatically improved our indoor air quality. That system is still working well. Since then, Smart Air dispatchers have been cordial and helpful and Smart Air techs have been consistently competent, punctual, kind, and respectful. Most recently, I called Smart Air after 3 PM on a Friday last June, panicking because our A.C. had just stopped working and my husband was coming home from the hospital on hospice the next morning. The Smart Air dispatcher got right on it, and Smart Air techs showed up after 5 PM to repair our A.C. I will always be grateful to both the dispatcher and the techs for their kindness in ensuring that my husband would not suffer in the heat. read more

I am so impressed with the team at Smart Air Conditioning and Heating. I was so pleased with my initial assistance with my HVAC unit that I signed up for their annual program for both my HVAC units. They are super responsive that really sold me. During the crazy 2021 snow blizzard I had serious HVAC problems and I had to contact them 4 times and they used facetime video calls to help me with my issues remotely and then scheduled me for the first day they could actually drive again after the snow. My service technician Derek was a total life saver as we were having 0 degree weather and he was able to get me running again. I highly recommend! read more

Our furnace had a gas leak. We had Texas Gas out to confirm the leak and they shut off the valve, as expected. I called Smart Air based on a neighbor's recommendation. I asked what it'd cost to get the problem diagnosed (and said up front it was a gas leak) and I was told $99. Tech shows up, is very nice, and is masked. Bonus. After some time, I'm told the leak has been found, and the replacement part will cost me $17, so my total bill will come out to... $500!? Tech goes on to explain that the equipment to find gas leaks is very expensive and they have to spay a special solution to prove they've found the leak. Let me stop here to tell you the special solution is soapy water. Anyone who has ever worked with gas knows this... Back to the story. I tell the tech I was told it'd be $99 and the tech responds that they had already called their manager and had confirmed I was not told about the extra fee. Wait. Hold up. You just happened to call your manager after you were done with the work, before you told me about the bill to see if they told me about one of the fees? Hmm. Ok. Sounds legit. Well, since the manager confirmed I didn't get told it'd cost me $400 to find a leak, and another $100 to fix it, he could do me a solid, and bring the whole bill down to a low low price of $312. At this point, I'm out the $100 "show up at your door and do nothing fee", and I'm doubting that I'll save much money by calling another company. I tell them to get it done. Tech leaves because they don't have the part, comes back and finishes. At the end of the work, the tech confirms that the pipe fitting from the exterior of unit to interior was loose, and they tightened it. ($312 for a loose pipe). I don't normally like working on gas lines, but I'm thinking at this point I've made a horrible mistake. Whatever. While they were in there, they noticed a capacitor is leaking oil, but they checked the voltage and everything checks out. No need for concern. 8 hours later, I get an email. They consulted with a colleague and I really need to replace that capacitor they told me was ok right away. It'll only cost me $160 and $50 for a return visit fee. A return visit fee to fix a problem that wasn't offered to be fixed while they were here, and that 8 hours earlier I was told was fine and didn't need to be addressed. Oh, but good news! For only $420 I can join a maintenance plan and they'll fix the capacitor for free! Do yourself a favor. Call someone else. read more

So, I called these guys because they were really responsive the last time I needed them. My AC unit went out last night and it was going to be another scorcher today. I couldn't leave my wife and two toddlers to suffer. Technician got to my house at 9:40am (which is awesome considering I called them at 7am - worth 2 stars at least). It took him 30 minutes to diagnose and fix the problem (capacitor in outside unit). He was gone in 35 minutes start to finish. The final bill was $350. Service Fee - $99 (just to get him there) Capacitor - ~$20 (most are cheaper but I went higher to give them the benefit of the doubt. I doubt they used a branded replacement). So, I guess the extra $240 was labor cost? So, $480 an hour for labor? I am happy to change my review if any of you HVAC enthusiasts tell me this is reasonable. EDIT: Adding a star for exceptional customer service as the Owner / Manager did call me to understand my frustrations. He explained to me that his labor rates have to account for significant overhead (insurance, continuous training, etc) and that the HVAC industry, in general, suffers from poor margins. He also pointed out that I did not take into account travel times in my calculations above (which is true). Let's just call it an hour of work total including the drive time. EDIT 2: I would also add that the technician did all the work described above without first saying, "Hey, I found your problem. The $20 capacitor is broken. The cost to replace it is $240 more than the $99 service fee. It will take 5 minutes. Would you like me to proceed?" read more

I still feel ripped off by this company after all this time. June 2020, they sent out a tech. He seemed to know what he was doing fixed the 4 year old AC and left. It was hot as hell all night-STILL BROKEN, called next morn, came back did another repair for more money. Left again, still STILL BROKEN. Came back again, still not fixed! They offered to send him out again and we said NO! they sent someone else that was not guessing at fixing it. We spent $2079.00 dollars to get our 4 year old AC fixed by Smart Air. NEVER again! The owner called me after we expressed unhappiness and said he would look into something and call me back. He did not, I called the a few days later and left a message and never heard from them again. BEWARE! Time has made me angrier than I was then. read more

Smart Air is the best! I started out a novice on HVAC systems and after 4-5 days of online research and with the help of my Smart Air Rep., I was much better informed and confident that I chose the best contractor, brand, and specific size unit, etc. for me. Staton Mayfield, my Smart Air Rep. was instrumental in helping me through the process. We stayed in touch and he answered all my questions at every stage, starting with the initial bid proposal, going over every detail of the system to be installed, including financial arrangements, checking on the system as it was being installed and then after installation to make sure it was working right, and then assisting me with the rebate paperwork. He was always courteous and helpful, knowledgeable and professional. Staton was prompt for our first appt. and came prepared with essential information on the American Standard systems they install, including SEER rating, size, 1 stage and 2 stage systems, price, etc. His was the second bid I received and it was less expensive (for the same system) by $543. (I did research some other companies, and found one or two that might be good, but at that point I had an idea of what I needed based on HVAC websites and comments online and didn't see the need to research more companies since I felt confident with Smart Air.) Staton also offered some specials for work ordered in December/January, even if actually installed after that. I was definitely glad to get their special 10 year labor warranty (instead of 3 years) because I chose them in January. In sum, I am very happy with Smart Air and my new HVAC system. Staton took care of my questions and concerns every step of the way. I am now a life-long customer and I recommend him and Smart Air overwhelmingly for any AC or Heating-related job. read more

Ever feel like you've been taken advantage of? On a July Friday morning, my A/C suddenly stopped working and I knew I needed to act before the weekend work slow-down. My long-standing A/C man moved out of town so I went to Yelp and chose Smart Air since they are located close to my home. The serviceman was out within an hour or two and quickly diagnosed and replaced a bad capacitor on the outdoor compressor. He then took a few minutes to crawl up in the attic to give the air handler a look-see. All was fine. Unfortunately the bill was $350, which I thought was high, but still promptly paid. My follow-up email inquiry about the cost of the capacitor part was never returned. Subsequent internet searches revealed that the part usually runs between $10 and $30. So labor and overhead for approximately 20 minutes of work came out to about $330! My old A/C man later said that I got ripped off. I called the manager about the exorbitant price and his answer was basically "A deal's a deal". So if you like overpaying for A/C services and taken advantage of in a crisis, Smart Air is the company for you! read more

These folks are 5 star! You cannot go wrong with them. I came across SmartAir while doing research for getting my old HVAC units serviced close to two years ago. Even during the service calls, they were very thorough and their tech staff great. During the last service call (previous summer) which started off as a cooling problem the tech diagnosed several issues with the old system. That must have been the best $100 (service call fee) which I have spent in a while. She submitted a detailed report (down to the parts) based on what could be done and what the approximate costing would be. This year when we decided to replace both the units, I reached out to Shane. He came out in a couple of days and then sometime after that submitted a bid. I got a competing bid from another highly rated company and SmartAir's bid was competitive though still a bit more expensive. However, given my past great experience with them, I decided to go ahead with SmartAir. We chose the variable speed option, which needs to be babied a bit like the German cars. However once stable, it is a great system and the comfort levels are amazing. This is what Shane had pointed out to me during the initial discussion. We did have an immediate issue in terms of old wiring not up to the task which was rectified in a few days after replacing the wiring. It did take a few visits as they tried simpler things first. The second more annoying issue was with the main water safety switch cutting off our unit every few days. This one took several more visits which included putting a new pipeline, adding more slope etc. However, none seemed to help. We finally decided to rely on the water cut-off in the tray. I will agree that the unit getting cut-off got annoying after a while. However, one needs to understand that most of these issues are not easy to foresee. You try out a solution and then have to see whether it works. I climbed in the attic twice to dry out the cut-off holder and the unit turned back on. That took the emergency bit out of the issue. These folks try hard for customer delight. They did not charge me for the several additional visits and items it took to stabilize the system. They accommodated the request the next day in most of the cases even though with summer their team is all tied up. General issues highlighted in reviews: 1. Expensive: SmartAir will not be the cheapest if that is your primary decision criteria. However, they will come pretty close and the service far outweighs any small deltas. They will be thorough rather than do patch work. 2. Timeliness: During peak months they are booked several weeks in advance. They try to deal with urgent situations before regular ones. They give a rough window of time and try to honor that. 3. Missed communication: If the expectation is to have several email ping-pongs in a day then that will not be the case. There have been one or two instances where I have had to send a reminder but these are acceptable. 4. Continuing issues: Most of the modern systems are complex and it takes a while to stabilize these systems. So be prepared for some surprises or nagging issues for a while before the systems settle down for any new installations. HVAC is a long-term engagement so it is important to keep the service and thoroughness in mind while deciding. They are highly recommended for new systems install. You cannot go wrong with them. There may be other better companies out there but overall I am happy with my choice of SmartAir. read more

Really glad I gave them a call after a long fruitless chase of the warranty company. Scheduling was a breeze, I had scheduled multiple work items as I needed both AC units worked on. I got to meet more than one of the team and they are all super professional and very knowledgeable. Tim came by first to estimate the work and he was very knowledgeable and clear about what is needed versus optional and everything across multiple work items was explained very well so I feel confident about the work. They were able to put in a new Air Conditioner for me when I moved into my house almost 4 years ago. It's been running great ever since without issues. I had compared prices with one other company at the time and found there prices to be competitive. They were also very professional and they were able to get the new unit installed pretty quickly to (think it was within 2 weeks of calling them), which I really appreciated at the time. The were very careful about not making and messes in the house, like dirtying the carpet or dinging walls while putting very big, heavy unit upstairs. They also gave me a free estimate on cost to replace the ductwork and I felt they were honest and the price was better than I expected for such a big job. So hope to still get that done as I had a 15 year smoker in the house prior. Highly recommend them. read more

AC goes out Saturday night, Labor Day weekend. I can tell it's the condenser fan motor that has finally given up after 16 years. I get to work calling companies that claim 24 hour service, armed with my naive diagnosis of the problem with the specs of the motor to make sure they have a tech that either has access to one quickly, or one on the truck. I called all the big names that you see commercials for, they all use answering services, nobody can answer my questions, I have to wait for a handful of drivers to call me, only to not commit to having the part and wanting to do an inspection first, or saying they won't have access to one until Tuesday These guys however.... they had a legitimate employee to talk to, he called his tech to verify he had the part, then worked with me on the perfect time for both of us to get this done. I felt respected as a customer because they didn't just blow me off, they committed to getting this resolved based off what I told them. Frank came out and was polite and had it fixed very quickly. No secrets about price, everything was explained and signed off on by me before they began working. Definitely recommend. read more

I see that SmartAir has written a lengthy response, and honestly I've only briefly skimmed it. To clarify the few points that stood out: 1. At no point have I said anything about any other AC company to Shane or anybody else at SmartAir. I hired them as the first company to do any AC service after I bought the property, knew nothing about any previous service, and used them exclusively for all service. I do not have any idea where Shane may have gotten this from, but I am the only one he deals with on this property and it didn't come from me. 2. RADIANT PLUMBING AND AIR is here now, one month after repair by SmartAir, and the float switch just installed in July by SmartAir IS NOT WORKING. It was wired incorrectly and was easily fixed by the tech from Radiant. I honestly have to thank SmartAir for doing such a poor job in responding to me and sending me looking for a new service provider, or I would be going through another round of water damage after another clog their switch didn't detect in a few months. read more

I saw a coupon for a free air quality audit so I decided to give Smart Air a call. The tech spent about 5 minutes in the attic and told me I needed a full duct and plenum replacement that would cost around $6000. He used several scare tactics that I'm sure would have worked on the average homeowner but I've been remodeling houses for 25 years. What bothered me the most was he kept saying that they "are the good guys". Well, I got two other bids. One of them was for $150 to repair a hole in my plenum (which was the main issue) and seal a few other minor leaks. The other was for $500 for a full plenum replacement. Both of those thoroughly inspected the duct work and found it to be in good shape. Those two companies really are the good guys and will be getting positive reviews. read more

I am a small business consultant and this company did everything right the first time. in the end, it's all about customer experience. My AC in my new 20 year old home stopped cooling late in the day. Shane immediately sent out Ross from Smart Air. Ross was able to fix the problem within two hours. I replaced my old AC system two months later. After much research, I chose Smart Air because this is the only company that appears to use a clean ducting system complete with sheet-metal. What happened was not a serious emergency but a major inconvenience. I planned a trip to see my one and a half year old grandson in Richmond, Va. He was born just as COVID arrived so I had never visited him in person. The afternoon before my departure, the AC stopped working. My extra large dog would be inside most of the time while I was gone.I could not leave my dog in the house without AC. Smart Air was booked up until the next day. I was going to cancel my trip. I thought the staff at SmartAir was very helpful and friendly. The lady who answered the phone was wonderful and the technician who came out (for a flat $85 fee) talked me through the problem and spelled it out for me. I had a bad motor blower. They told me my warranty was expired. A new one would be $890. Labor would be $160. Together, that's $1050. To make a long story short - my motor blower WAS under warranty. And, when I called another company, it ended up costing $250 to replace. As you can imagine, I was upset. For a gal who makes just over $2000 a month (after taxes), the idea of almost paying so much more was upsetting. So, I'll admit it - I got a little nasty on Yelp and felt completely justified doing it. Only...it wasn't that simple and I'll spare you the details, but I was not the only one who was given faulty information. Smart Air relied on a warranty company called Robert Madden/Carrier to supply them with accurate information and, with regards to my unit, that didn't happen. How do I know this? Because Smart Air moved heaven and earth to get to the bottom of my bad experience even though I was extremely caustic and unreasonable to them. They contacted me and Robert Madden and received a letter from the Vice President, apologizing for their mistake and the impact it had on Smart Air. Oh yea, and they got me a completely unnecessary $250 refund from Robert Madden/Carrier for ... heck, I don't know. But, I'm taking it - cuz, you know, I'm classy like that. Seriously, I can say that Smart Air did what I, genuinely, didn't think was possible. They changed my opinion of them and made me realize how wrong I was in judging them as harshly as I had. True - it was not an ideal situation, but Smart Air handled it in the most ideal way possible. So, yea, you could say I'm a fan now. read more

Two years after Smart Air installed our new A/C system, it still isn't cooling the house. So what do we do: keep spending time and money with Smart Air?. Like Melanie below, there's no end in sight. The first summer, the A/C failed because the drain was installed improperly and it clogged. The second summer, the A/C failed. on one of the hottest days. We called Smart Air's emergency number and got no callback (or explanation). When Smart Air did respond, they said the freon was fine but the filter needed to be replaced. We had to bring them back the next day. They discovered a major freon leak and charged us to recharge the system. Well, the leak is still there and another summer is here. Smart Air thinks it's the line to the compressor but will still charge us if replacing the line doesn't solve the issue. There's no accountability. We started off as fans of Smart Air. Now we had to schedule another company to fix the system that Smart Air installed. It's a crappy situation. read more

Imagine a date night on the horizon (which for parents of two daughters means shipping them off to my mom's, with us staying home and making dinner together) only to learn the AC is on the outs. That's right, 90 degrees, inside. Date night in doubt. That's where Smart Air stepped in. A couple of calls with Jeff, who was manning the phones, and Matt (the tech) was onsite to fix the problem and save the day (evening). i could go on and on about their courtesy, professionalism and responsiveness, but suffice to say, I will call them again should issues arise. In fact, I signed up for their bi-annual system check, which saved me 15% on the spot and nearly paid for itself then and there. Thank you guys. Last year at a home we were renting our A/C Condenser unit fan went out. Smart Air sent someone out quickly who fixed it for a fair price. So this year when we bought a house that needed the A/C replaced, we called three companies to bid on the job. Shane Bryant, the owner, came out and did a thorough walkthrough and recommended a reasonable system. His bid was right around the price of the others which was reassuring. With the Texas heat, we didn't want a the job done cheaply. We wanted it done right. They came out on their scheduled installation date and due to another appointment being cancelled, they had twice the guys for the job. Instead of a day and a half installation, they knocked out the whole thing in less than a day. The inspector from the City of Austin came out last week and said he wasn't at all surprised at how good of a job they did as he sees their work all over town and it's always top notch. My only complain would be that getting our estimate took a little longer than expected. But as a small business owner myself, I know how easy it is to get backed up with work and let something like that slip by or get pushed. I really wanted to use them for the install, so I'm glad I waited on the estimate from Shane. All in all, I have been really happy with the service and will definitely use them again. read more

We had a great experience replacing our AC last year with Shane of Smart Air. After submitting a very competitive bid which was more detailed and informative than the competition, he helped us through two major issues that were not related to the install. We have a two story house with one AC unit that uses a damper system to switch between floors. We've been having problems with it working properly. While replacing the AC unit, he debugged the problem and proved that the damper motor was defective. He investigated to find the best replacement motor in the area (Houston, i think) and fixed it for materials cost + no labor, because it was not included in his initial estimate. About six months later we ran into a problem with bacteria growing on our AC coil causing bad smells. This is a random problem depending on the environment of the unit and had nothing to do with the quality of the system or install. Shane did a lot of research on the problem (it's called "Dirty Sock Syndrome") and found the best solution to date--adding a antibacterial coating to the coil. This process requires a new coil and significant labor, so Shane worked with his vendor to warranty the coil, get a new coated coil, and replaced the unit (5 hours of labor) at no charge, even though the problem was not his fault. read more

I have to say, I'm a little leery of businesses with such high ratings on Yelp. Does the company pay strangers to write such good reviews? Do they offer them some sort of incentive? Surely, no company can have such good reviews legitimately, right?? Smart Air Service, I'm happy to say, is the real deal. I had an issue with my furnace late yesterday and was able to have Shane come by this morning to address the problem. He was extremely kind, informative, and went above and beyond what other service technicians I've had in the past were ever willing to do (by that, I mean climbing on to the roof to clean a clogged vent versus the easy solution of just replacing a part.) In the end, it was a simple fix (the clogged vent) that got my heater working again. That certainly saved me some money, too. Shane is awesome! We are in the option period for a house on the east side and we had some concerns about the HVAC unit, so we called Smart Air. We wanted a free estimate and Shane knew there was really no guarantee of work coming out of it, but that didn't stop him from staying an hour and being EXTREMELY thorough in the advice he gave. The space that the HVAC sits is very tight, so he called 2 other contractors to get their take on it, then called the City of Austin to get some clarification on how he could get our exact setup up to code, then he left and called back later to say he called another friend who had another opinion on it. All this for free, when he doesn't even know if he'll get work out of it. If we do end up buying the house and getting the work done, we will for sure be using Smart Air. read more

It's finally starting to get hot here, so if course my AC stops blowing cold air on Saturday night. Sunday morning I get on line, and see these reviews, and think this company sounds pretty awesome. I filled out the "Request Service" form on their website and hit the submit button. About 3 minutes later my phone rings and it is Shane, calling to ask me about my AC issues. I couldn't believe someone called me back, on a Sunday, as fast as they did. I was already feeling good about these guys. So Shane tells me he can have a tech out that afternoon if I would like. This just keeps getting better. I had read that there was a higher charge for Sunday service, but after the Saturday night I just spent in my house with my 2 dogs, cat, and girlfriend all in the bed, there was no way I was going to survive another night without cold AC. So I decided to just go ahead and go with the Sunday service. The tech called me before the scheduled time and said he could head my way if I were ready. I was. So the tech ended up getting to my place earlier than we had talked about. Another plus for Smart Air. He also informed me he brought a part he thought I might need replaced in case that was the issue. Being prepared is another good sign. He inspects my AC unit for a bit, then tells me that the problem is what he had guessed, and what it will take to fix it. I have to say, when I got the quote I was actually kind of relieved. AC business can be expensive business, and it being a Sunday I was expecting the worst. As it ended up, I had the problem diagnosed, the part replaced, and the cold air blowing strong after a total of maybe 40 - 45 minutes. And the total cost was completely reasonable. Definitely fair for a Sunday afternoon call that I had only just inquired about that same morning. I will definitely be calling Smart Air for any future AC issues I may encounter. When we were looking for A/C help this summer I read a bunch of yelp reviews and Smart Air's were outstanding. I had them come out to our house to diagnose our problem (along with several other companies), and everything I had read on Yelp about Smart Air turned out to be true. They were the clear winners among the 3 companies that we talked to. Shane was fantastic to deal with, very focused on providing great service. But the fact that the rest of Shane's team displayed the same care and customer foucs is what really makes us fans of Smart Air. We ended up having to replace our entire system, and felt like we got a fair price and great service through Smart Air. Could not be happier with the interactions we had with this company. -- My AC issues were for a busy barbershop so getting this done ASAP was critical. I picked two highly rated and reviewed companies off of Yelp. Both came out promptly and measured my shop and gave me a bid for what they thought I needed. The other company gave me a choice between a 3 ton and a 4 ton which I thought was odd. Staton the sales guy with Smart Air Service assured me a 4 ton is what I needed and it would do a good job for the size of my space. I was ready to buy whatever size recommended because the working 3 ton I had wasn't doing the job since I had a new 20 foot ceiling. The quote was timely, thorough, and very professional plus it beat the other one I had by a nice amount. Installation was set for the next day! They brought a big team out and knocked it out in one day even with a few unforeseen issues. After installation there was a little water leakage from somewhere and the owner himself came out and solved the problem. They promptly replaced the damaged ceiling tiles and everything from that point has been perfect. This is a real professional company! They are big enough to get the great price and quick installation and small enough to care about every detail along the way. This can be a very stressful time for a business here in Texas, but the team at Smart Air Service will make you feel like they have control of the situation right from the first phone call.
