The chicken pho was just okay. The spring rolls were very tasty. Order a small versus large as the small is absolutely massive.

Folks may notice a trend in my reviews lately, so yes. I admit I have a problem. But it is cold, and gray out... and I have a Pho-bsession. Can't get enough of the broth and noodles and rare beef. So, in order to convince myself I am not in a pho-rut, I decided to go somewhere new. Each time I want pho! Soon folks, every pho joint in the ID will be reviewed by me. But I digress... 1st up on my "new" pho place is Thanh Vi. Some of the older reviews questioned the cleanliness here, but I don't see it. This place was clean, cute, and full of friendly staff. The menu is rather large -- more than just soups here, but I have that problem so a rare beef pho (w/chinese doughnut) was ordered by me and the broken rice special by CW. Tea was sipped, water was brought out -- and then our orders came. True to pho-form, my "small" bowl was inordinately large -- chock full of rare beef and onions that I obnoxiously picked out. The broth was good -- not the best I had, and got better the longer the basil/lime/sriracha got to meld with it. The noodles were thinner than what I was used to, but still perfectly done and delightfully slurp-able. I had to remind the staff about my chinese doughnut -- obviously forgotten considering I was nearly done with my soup by the time I was actually able to remind them about it (staff kept disappearing into the kitchen). They brought one out quickly though with an apology. It was tasty and sopped up the remainder of my broth nicely -- if not a little to soft for my tastes. I nibbled all the meat choices on CW's plate -- none of the flavors really settled well with me. Not bad, but not something I would have liked myself. Prices are average, and cards are accepted. Woo. So all in all, an alright place for a quick bowl of soup and possibly more. read more

After discovering that the wait at nearby Dong Thap was still upwards of 30 minutes at 1PM on a Sunday, I decided to appease my hangry stomach by walking around the corner and coming to Thanh Vi. Thankfully, we were seated at once--I was definitely way too ravenous to stomach the thought of yet another wait. I was extremely dehydrated that afternoon, and it was cold and rainy outside. Thus, soup was the only choice in terms of what to order. My SO ordered a large bowl of pho with exactly the combination of cuts that he wanted. I opted for the pork and shrimp wonton soup instead. Within minutes, two large, steaming bowls of broth, meat, and noodle goodness were plopped down in front of us. Both our broths really hit the spot--meaty, flavorful, delicious. The noodles weren't the best in town (Dong Thap wins that crown for pho; Mike's Noodle House does so for Cantonese noodle soups), but they were fine. All in all, it was a very satisfying meal for $10 a person, and definitely a great option to keep in your back pocket when lines out the door keep you from eating elsewhere in the ID. read more

After being kneaded at a local Chinese foot massage salon, my friends and I ventured up the street to this pleasant restaurant where we indulged in plates of stir fried, pan-sauteed, and grilled meat & noodle dishes, plus my huge (I ordered a small - still huge!) bowl of chicken pho and fresh tofu & veggie rolls. This was my first time to the ID Than Vi--and I prefer it more than the Ave one. I ordered a small #21-charbroiled pork and egg roll with noodles and fresh veggies. It was yummy! The food is light and fresh--all the veggies were in good shape--nothing wilted! Everyone else seemed satisfied with their selection. And the best part was that it was filling and only costed me $5.50!!! I haven't eaten that cheap and had my stomach so happy for a looong time! :) The staff is very friendly and they don't annoyingly come around every 4 minutes to make sure you are doing ok or to fill up your water. I love how you can just pay at the register. On Fri. or Sat. evenings, parking might be a pain, you might have to just park at Viet Wa-the grocery store, or park across the street. read more

I'm a fan! I read through all the reviews carefully - and wanted to experience this place on my own, with a fellow Yelper. Excellent food! Good service! Had their chicken pho: seasoned well, and good portions of noodles and chicken. Plus, all the sides were fresh. Chicken wings: good Spring rolls: excellent! Egg rolls: excellent! Vermicelli dishes: excellent! Vietnamese coffee: giant! The two times I've been here the same thing happened: in the middle of our meal, the music (which was off upon entering) was turned WAY up, then down, then off, then up. WTF? The first time it happened, one of the staff members kids was singing along to Hannah Montana on her laptop, while the TV was playing something differently, and the music was being turned on, off, up, down, and back up. We absolutely love Thanh Vi. Their Bun (vermicelli bowls) are exactly what we want whenever we get a hankering for that kind of food, and they come in 3 sizes, depending on our hunger (small bowl, big bowl, and tray, though itthe tray is listed as a separate item). I get the Barbequed pork and sugarcane shrimp, and my Vegetarian girlfriend gets the lemongrass tofu. She passes on the sauce, which is called house fish sauce, but tastes nothing like fish, just like sweet vinegar goodness, but might be non-vegetarian, who knows? There's plenty of taste without the sauce, too. The waiters do their job, and bring me what I order. I am satisfied and pleased. It's good, and after the meal, if I want sugar, I can always count on super sweet bubble "tea" - actually more like a smoothie/shake. read more

Since my friend comes here a lot because it's on his way home he wanted me to try it to see how I liked it. We had gone to Lemongrass a couple weeks ago so I wanted to check out other Vietnamese restaurants in the area. First of all, parking is a pain here. That's not really the restaurant's fault, but get ready to deal with finding somewhere to park. Every other spot is reserved for other store's customers. I ordered my regular bun rieu which has shrimp patties, tofu and tomato based broth. It was pretty tasty but they serve what seemed to be smaller portions than other restaurants. For $7-8 dollars for some broth and noodles, I usually feel stuffed (gross, I know) but this time..hmmm not so much. Overall this place is ok. If I were craving some Vietnamese soup I wouldn't rush to this place since the soup didn't stand out to me. One thing I did like is that they did have a lot more dishes than other restaurants in the area. I will try other things on their menu, but not quite sure when I will do it. read more

Thanh VI is one of my favorite Vietnamese restaurants. I grew up coming here often because my uncle used to own the supermarket around the corner from the place. The menu offers a lot of unpretentious Vietnamese cooking at a very good price. If you have visited many Asian restaurants you know that compared to them that Thanh VI is one of the cleanest Asian restaurants you will probably ever visit. The bathrooms are clean and that's a good sign of how their keep their kitchen as well. You cannot compare Thanh VI to Tamarind Tree, for one the food style is quite different and secondly the class of restaurant is different. For some home cooked Vietnamese food without the frills or the fancy price, I would recommend Thanh VI as one of the better choices within the ID. read more

Went to Tamarind Tree once and never went back. Not because it wasn't bad per se. Just super unmemorable. I rather get my Vietnamese fix here at Thanh Vi. Order the Banh Rue and Catfish Clay pot. Perfect pairing in my opinion. The restaurant was super low-key for a Friday night. A HUGE plus since I'm an introvert and crowds tend to make me cringe. Come here for the eats. I tried a lot of Pho in town but this is my favorite place. The broth is so good. The only thing I don't like is I have wait too long

We came here for dinner on a Friday night, around 8 p.m. There was nine of us and they didn't have a large table so they put two tables together. The customer service here is great: we had four waiters who went back and forth to deliver food, straws, napkins, extra sauce, etc. I had Com Tam Suon Bi Cha, which was steamed broken rice with grilled marinated pork chop, shredded pork, baked ground pork, and egg. My favorite was the marinated pork, which was tender and had a good flavor. Other people in our group wasn't so lucky: Bun Bo He and Bun Thit Nuong were among some of the dishes that were considered so-so. read more

This place sucks. When I went into the restaurant, there were only two tables served. I was wondering why customers were so few in the lunch peak hour and after I tasted the food and interacted with the sole waiter in the restaurant everything became clear! Terrible food! the veggies served on the place had already withered, including the basil for pho!! I've been to numerous vietnamese restaurants and this is the first one ever! I order House Special broken Rice. The canned carrots are too soft. My boyfriend ordered House Special Pho and he couldn't even finish the bowl because the beef stinks so much! A vietnamese restaurant should at least have decent "house special" food, right? And these two disappointed us both! Rude and awful service. when I told the waiter the dish was not fresh and unsatisfactory the waiter responded "that's enough!" He went on explaining that I offended him by pointing the chopsticks at him. I was eating when he came and asked for my comments on my food and of course I was holding chopsticks in my hand! Only come here for the Com Tam Bi Suon Cha (broken rice with shredded pork, pork chop and egg pie). From when I was a kid until now, this is my favorite place to eat that specific dish. Everything else they serve you can pass on. We ordered beef skewers and it came out with thinly sliced beef strips. They weren't even on skewers! The meat was overly sweet and chewy. Pho Dac Biet looked tasty, but ended up being bland. The Banh Xeo had 2 tiny shrimp inside and was super thin and crispy. Now I love a fresh crispy Banh Xeo, but this was like eating a Tims Cascade potato chip. It was so crispy that After eating a 1/3 of it, it hurt the roof of my mouth. Came here for the first time as a celebration after my college graduation ceremony. BEST CHOICE EVER MADE! I've been ordering the same food I had on that day, coming back and forth, and not once was I not impressed with their service or food quality! This is definitely an excellent place to find Authentic Vietnamese food with almost similar taste. Bring a friend or two, I've seen this place in action, it can hold up to abt 30,40 people! Despite the fact that I live closer to the U district Than Vi, I find myself frequenting the one in the ID - go figure - but it's just that good. This is a Vietnamese place, yes, but have NEVER EVER *gasp* had the pho here. That's because there' is a ton of other stuff to try, from the rice platters to the vermicelli noodle bowls to the rice paper plates, where you slap together your own concoctions (so you can't complain if the whole thing falls apart when you're trying to bite into it). Than Vi is one of the first Vietnamese places I frequented, before Spring Garden, before Five Seasons, but it's still one of the best. The service is always prompt and the food good value for the money. Still a winner after all this time! read more

i've eaten in this restaurant a few times, whether with family or by myself. I usually opt for the duck bamboo shoot noodle soup (love it in general). Their dish is ok, momma makes it best. I personally think that they short me on the noodles. I like my "more meat, more noodles, more greens" ordeal =) So most of the time i ask for extra noodles and bamboo shoots plus the greens. their, duck isn't bad, can't go wrong. it's about the salad sauce that makes it bad or not. which in this case ehh, it was okay; do-able. mmMm i swear, every review i've done so far i would drool and crave for it..so in this case. Came here because I've heard a lot about Thanh Vi, but never have a chance to eat here before. Plus, it was a bit chilly that day so I wanted some noodles soup. We ended up ordering the shredded pork spring rolls, the combination Pho, and the grilled meat balls plate that basically is like a spring rolls, but you have to do it yourself. First of all, like every other asian restaurant service suck, so don't even expect anything. After we got our food, our server never came back to ask how we were doing. We didn't even get any veggie for our Pho and it took forever to get the servers attention because they were too "busy" sitting around eating and talking. The shredded pork springroll was alright, on the slim side, we regretted not getting the basic spring rolls though. The pho broth was alright, but without lime it was really bland, so we had to walked up to the counter to ask them for some lime. Also there was not enough tendon and tripe in the combination, way too much noodles though. I thought the grilled meat balls was really good and flavorful and fun wrapping my food, however, I found a hair on one of the rice paper that really spoiled my apetite. -2* for the hair -1* for the poor service read more

I get to go here with some relatives almost every weekend I visit... and they absolutely love this place. There's only one good thing about this place and it's the brown rice. If it wasn't for that, I probably wouldn't even step foot into this place. I've tried the pho (mediocre), banh xeo (1 single vietnamese crepe for almost $7), and various rice dishes. One time I ordered the lemongrass grilled chicken..and .they brought out grilled chicken stir-fried with soy sauce/oyster sauce. Seriously? You think I wouldn't notice? Oh. and the brown rice was cold. Ugh. Parking is bloody awful. Yes...service is slow, and you might have to scream for attention when you want your tea refilled. But overall, the food is good, brown rice is available, and the price is reasonable. This place is ok for a quick casual bite. I have been going here for about 18 years. Since I can be indecisive I appreciate their very large and varied menu. I wouldn't suggest the bubble tea. Unless, you don't mind powder mix. I personally prefer fresh ingredients; blended bubble tea. The prices are decent. The service is quick, adequate and friendly. I don't have a favorite dish which is good because I'm not a creature of habit and order different dish each time. Their dish portion is generous and flavors are tasty. Fresh vegetable condiments. I'm a fan of many asian restaurants, this one included! I had the House Special Fried Rice and a Tiger Beer (post-new sign: Beer & Wine Fusion!). This was very good. One thing about the meat(?) paste stuff wrapped around the sugar cane is that after you eat the wrap-around goodness, the sugar cane ends are still tender. See those grill marks? You can suck a bit of the juice out of those ends. Sooo good. The center-90% is tough as rock, but don't forget the ends! read more

If you've been to the U-district Thanh vi, don't get it confused with this one. The food and service are not comparable because the U-district one is by far better. Of the dishes I tried here,( Banh Xeo [viet pancake] and rice dish), only the banh xeo was impressive. Along with this, my pork on my rice dish was under cooked. The person I was with had the pho and ended up barely touching the bowl. Service isn't anything special either; the guy isn't all that friendly and when we went to pay, it was like we were a burden to him. Overall...I'm not impressed. read more

Don't try to order food to-go from them 15-30 before they close. I had an unfortunate experience with them attempting to call in an order. I ordered two dishes, both vegetarian, but one had to be modified veggie using tofu instead. The guy receiving my order seemed disinterested in taking it and I asked him to verify that he understood, he confirmed yes, but screwed it up and we picked up some luke-warm chicken curry. Standard, middle of the road vietnamese fare. We went here since Vietnam House around the corner was packed. Service was a bit slow, but the food came out decently fast. Gotta love asian food. Got the rice combo with the bone in pork chop, fried egg, and all the other side things (shrimp rolled around sugar cane, meatloaf type thing...etc.) all for $13. Pretty standard and good. The vermicelli was the same (we always get the charboiled pork with egg rolls)- there's nothing spectacular, but nothing wrong with it either. We shared a ban xeo (vietnamese pancake) and this was a noticeable difference- it was a lot crispier and thicker (thicker batter) than most ban xeo's I've had. Not particularly better or worse, but I think I prefer the thinner version. The veggies were a little wilted and not that clean, and the meat they put inside the ban xeo is mostly pork fat, so not my fave either. Good, not great. read more

This food is always great!. I've been coming here for what seems like 20 years now. It's my wife's favorite place to eat. The spring rolls are terrific. The chow mein is awesome. I like the squid with rice, the beef stew, the vermicelli bowls and the deep fried tofu. The veggies are always fresh. The folks working there are very kind and decent. I must say I have never experienced anything but great food and kind service there. I have never experienced any of the alleged problems that the lady from CALIFORNIA claims to have had. Must be a shill for another restaurant. These folks at Thanh Vi are hard working, and their product is excellent. Some pansy might have an issue with their bathroom, but toodley fucking doo -- don't come back; more food for me and the rest of us who don't have a huge stick up our ass. I have eaten here literally HUNDREDS of times, and never had a bad experience. And I am going to keep coming back. Park on South Main behind the restaurant, it's the easiest way to get in there. read more

Great Vietnamese place in the international district. I enjoyed a tofu vermicelli bowl which was off menu - they let me swap tofu for another protein. The tofu was cooked perfectly, very tasty, and the noodles were super spicy. A little too spicy for my meager taste, but good. My lips were buzzing by the end. Very inexpensive.
