Moonlight Cafe has been my favorite Phó place in Seattle. I used to live close by and used to frequent this place whenever I wanted some Phó. The restaurant itself is nice but could use some updating for the price you're paying for their food. I was a little worried because the bathroom looked recently renovated but still looked like it needed work. It didn't have a soap dispenser and the soap they offered was a soap bottle that was all used but had water added to it and actually was out. I was barely able to get some to wash my hands. When you 1st walk in you'll notice that they use a table to the left as prep space (which is interesting). We both enjoyed our Phó (1 chicken the other a combo) as well as their fried wontons. One thing I couldn't get over is how much the prices have increased. Granted it's been 10 years since the last time I've visited but a 180% increase is quite the sticker shock. There's a small parking lot shared with others. The cafe was no frills with a karaoke setup which may have a busy crowd on the weekends. Service was pretty slow - dishes came out one at a time instead of all together. Additionally, there was a bit of wait in between dishes. I got the black pepper beef and although the dish was tender and flavorful, it was on the pricier end. The dish as $26 and if you wanted rice, that was an additional $4. Loved the broth! So delicious, very kind service, waitress was pleasant when I asked her to repeat the question of if I wanted thick or thin noodles as I'm hard of hearing. Delicious lemonade. Parking lot whoop whoop, not very common in Seattle. As it gets colder definitely consider coming here for a warm soup, I hear the restroom door doesn't lock easily so consider using the bathroom at home or your next destination but nowhere can be perfect (and it might just be fixed by the time you're considering coming here and reading my review). Seating is nice and spacious, finally a place I don't feel like I'm sitting on people's laps to eat or constantly getting bumped into. Music isn't overpowering or loud, nice low volume. I hate to say it, but this place is dead to me. I ordered a vegetarian Pho which was decent and had good broth, but my partner had a much worse experience. She ordered the vegetarian pad Thai, which was $19 and the only thing it had in it was a little bit of bean sprouts and some tofu. The sauce was goofy and way too sweet, almost like somebody had mixed together, ketchup and sugar. When I asked about the vegetable charge, I was told that the bean sprouts constituted the vegetables, a rip off to say the very least. We didn't even take home the leftovers because it was so bad. A basic dish like this should at least be edible, and it turned me off to the entire restaurant. While I had had previously decent experience experiences here I'm sorry to say that I won't be going back. read more

An amazing piece! We have lived in this neighborhood for four years and their food has only gotten better! We have a daughter with a serious gluten allergy (celiac) and they always make accommodations from their menu for us to make the dish gluten free. This place has some of the best vegetarian meat I have gotten. Every time I have to ask if it is vegetarian when it comes because of how convincing it is. We always get the sesame beef and it always is spot on. The crispness and juiciness of the protein is wonderful and the vegetables are perfectly cooked. Combined with a side of rice and it is a great ratio between the sauces/juices of the dish and rice to soak it up. It is also a good portion too. My wife and I shared one and were perfectly content with the amount of food. They start you off with some good tea on the house that is a good palette cleanser and nice way to start your meal especially on a cold wet day. A preface: I am scoring them only 3 stars because they way they have jacked up their prices in the last couple of years is unreasonable. Wow, I can't believe I wrote a review a while ago and haven't since! Well, over 10 years later and the food is delicious. I hadn't been here in a long time until I recently became vegan and I absolutely am on a mission to try every vietnamese vegan restaurant there is to try. This place has just really good quality, decent service, and consistently good food. My review is based on the vegan menu as I haven't had their meat options here. I'm honestly a creature of habit and really like what I like. My go to is usually the grilled pork with tofu pie and shredded tofu (com dac biet) - aka the rice combo. I love the tofu pie and shredded tofu. The tofu pie gives you the egg pie essence and you do not miss egg or pork at all. The grilled pork is addicting as heck - slightly crispy parts with a tender and chewy bite of meat that really resembles pork. I love it. The veggies that come with it (pickled carrots and daikon w/ cucumbers and lettuce) are also fresh tasting. I also have had their "pork" fried rice and that is also delicious and savory. My other go-to dish is always going to be the combo claypot stewed meat with tofu, mushrooms, and fake meat - i always add steamed eggplants with this dish, and is the most heartiest, warmest, most comforting dish ever! A bite of tofu or eggplant with some vegan chicken on a bite of rice with their pickled jalepenos... that is chef's kiss right there. Great sweet and savory bite of sauce that is "stewed" with the pot. their sesame beef is also great - i'd recommend. hearty, tasty, and super addicting. Their stirfry tofu with veggies were great as well - sometimes a little too watery for me, but overall, a very nice cook to this dish. the other day I had their sauteed gai lan with mushrooms (and gluten protein) - that was pretty good. I really appreciate how thoughtfully they cook - the food is always hot, fresh, and cooked really well. You cannot beat the quality and the price. You must eat their pickled jalepenos, my favorite! and their chili sauce is good too. Service is typically pretty good, they wait tables and refill your water. Occasionally slow, but they're really nice. Parking is ample in the lot, usually never an issue. read more

Stumbled upon this by accident and now it's my favorite place to get vegetarian food in all the greater Seattle area. They have an extensive meat and vegetarian menu using lots of Asian imitation soy meats. Their sauces are very flavorful, especially in their clay pot dishes. Their veggie bbq pork on a skewer tastes AMAZING and any dish that has it, like the pork and eggroll fried rice, is guaranteed to be delicious. The veggie chicken nuggets appetizer was okay. Great crunch, but the nuggets were quite bland. They do provide a dipping sauce with it, but i preferred to dunk them in the sauce in my claypot. read more

We have been going to Moonlight Cafe since we moved to Seattle in 2019 because of their varied vegan options. They have gotten very expensive in that time. Today we ordered a simple sautéed veggie with tofu and viet chowfun with tofu and vegetable, and our meal came out to $60, with tax and tip. When I first dug into it I immediately noticed how little ingredients there were (a very tiny portion of noodles, kid size almost) and very few toppings which was disappointing. Moonlight Cafe has been a gem for many decades ever since my family and I moved to Seattle back in '96. The restaurant is well known for their vegan/vegetarian menu which features a plethora of mouth watering, savory Vietnamese dishes. During Chinese New Year when tradition is to eat vegetarian all day (in respect to Buddha), I would find myself thinking about dinner here at Moonlight. To name a couple of my favorite dishes, I highly recommend their bún bò Huế chay (spicy noodle soup, made vegan) and mắm lóc chưng gừng (fermented bean curd with ginger) served with a bowl of jasmine rice. Attached are a couple of images. Their do-it-yourself roll platter is also amazing with tofu, bean curds and fresh vegetables to accompany vermicelli noodles and tangy sauce. I can't believe I've never been here before! This is definitely the place to check out if you're craving homey Vietnamese food- they have it all! We originally came here for the canh chua (sour soup) and the bo tai chanh (rare beef in lime salad), but they didn't have any of the latter. We ended up ordering the bo luc lac (shaking beef), ca kho to (claypot fish) and a large of the canh chua ca (sour soup with catfish). Bo luc lac- mostly vegetables and the beef was way too well done. But overall the seasoning was good. Ca Kho To- I absolutely love the sauce, but I feel like I didn't penetrate the fish as well- maybe it needed to either be marinated longer or they needed to cook it at a lower heat so the flavors could seep through rather than just coat the fish. Canh Chua Ca- this has to be my favorite- seasoned well and the fish was very fresh. I also appreciated the amount of vegetables in the soup. Service- this is pretty much a miss, you definitely have to ask for them to help you. They never refilled our waters or checked in on us once all of the food was out. The owner was really nice and stopped by to help rearrange the foods on our table so everyone could access it! Dishes- beware! Sometimes it's dirty, so check before you use. Vegan friendly Moonlight has an all-vegan menu. I highly recommend their Hot Pot and amazingly delicious tomato-based soup. The soup "wowed" me with complex flavors. Like many Vietnamese soups it came with mildly spicy pepper slices, lime wedge, bean sprouts and fresh basil on the side to add as you like. Hot Pot: Moonlight offers an array of vegetable protein shaped into succulent bites that resemble meat, poultry, and seafood. The ambiance has had a recent upgrade. Woodwork gleamed and festive lanterns hung from the ceiling. read more
