Home style Vietnamese cuisine with no frills. Simple, cozy, and down home. Portions are huge and you can feed a family of 5 on a budget. The grilled meats and seafood are good and the vermicelli bowl is classic and balanced with flavors of lemongrass, fish sauce and a nice char on the protein. My go to is the grilled pork chop with broken rice, pickled veggies and side of bind broth. The char is great and the meat falls off the bone. There are lots of good options for vegetarians and the menu is light and bright. Ambiance is reminiscent of many Chinese restaurants and you don't get a Tamarind Tree or Monsoon vibe. You do get value and this is a trade off. Door dash is expensive and I recommend parking in the CID and walking up. You can also park in front of the restaurant but over the years, there are a lot of sketchy characters, flea markets, and fentanyl slumps that occur outside of the restaurant. read more

I accidentally ordered from this Thanh Vi rather than my usual (U District). After reading the reviews, I prepared myself for the worst. And while it wasn't quite that bad, it also wasn't very good. The chicken was ice cold when it arrived. The broth didn't smell very flavorful but I was hopeful (despite numerous reviews to the contrary), and pumped it full of sriracha and hoisin. To no avail, it seems. The broth is eternally flavorless. It's edible and there was a ton of shredded chicken, which won it the 3 stars, but there's no way I'll order from here again. We came here on Labor Day Monday around 8 pm. I swear most of the Vietnamese restaurants around the area were closed. We wanted something cheap and quick and settled on this spot. At first I wasn't too excited because of the ratings, but I am so glad we went! They had the best smoothies/bubble tea drinks! Too bad they were out of boba, but the jelly they added to our blended mango and papaya smoothies was yummy! They also add the crispy stick in the spring rolls! Peanut sauce was a lil runny though. Thanh v rice combo. Their egg cake (ch trng ) was cold, and their shredded pork skin (bì) was like clear noodles and cold as well. The plazas parking lot is so tiny and so bad. People are always parking where they shouldn't. And your biting your nails in fear staring out the window of people trying to park only an inch from your bumper. Like most Asian restaurants not to much customer service. Not a bad place for some Vietnamese grub in the International District. I started with the Vietnamese Chicken Wings and ordered the House Special with Broken Rice and per the recommendation of the server, instead of the pork chop that it normally comes with, I substituted for the short ribs. It didn't take long for us to get our food. I really liked that the House Special with Broken Rice provided different items, to try. However, I did find that there were some items I liked and some I didn't care for. The texture of the short ribs was a little too rough to break apart, but overall, they were fine. The salad with the fish sauce was a night addition, adding a light element to the overall plate. The fried egg was especially yummy with the broken rice - and I do like that you can substitute white rice for brown rice. The Baked Ground Pork and Egg was something I didn't care for since it was served cold, and hardly tasted the meat. And I really did not like the Sugar Cane Shrimp, as the texture was sandy, so was distracted by the texture and couldn't really taste any shrimp. As for the Vietnamese Chicken Wings, they were good, but wish they weren't so drenched in the fish sauce. Since it was also caramelized in the fish sauce - the flavor was way too abundant, distracting from the flavor of the chicken itself. I'd like to try other dishes in the future. Thanh Vi is located in the Vietnamese section of the International Distract and does have a private parking lot that it shares with in the shopping centre it's located in. Staff is super, super friendly and I would happily return just for that alone, as they try to accommodate you as much as possible and remember frequent customers. read more

As a native to the area, this area has changed a lot in the last 2 years forgot the last 20! This spot sits right behind the VietWah facing the street. Parking is tight but there's a decent lot all around the building. Service is bad here. The boys that work here wear there heart on their sleeves and practically throw the plates at you when they're upset. And will straight up ignore you. I get it, we have bad days, you don't have to smile. But at least have some manners. Food makes up for it though. The mango salad is delicious. They were not that busy at that time. If they want to keep their business run well, they need to change; "unless" they're trying to sell out all food in the storage before closing the restaurant. So I finally came back here to actually try their food. I mean, aside from their extra creamy, yummy avocado smoothies... Luckily, I brought a copy of their menu with me! That's because I am not very familiar with Vietnamese food names or dishes except for pho, so now I can actually write a review using the name of the dish I ordered instead of just describing it. My coworker told me that the banh xeo was delicious. And although it's served as an appetizer, it could be a regular meal in itself because it's huge. It's described in the menu as a Vietnamese crepe and stuffed with bean sprout, shrimp, and pork. I was surprised to find that it's deep-fried compared to their French counterparts. It was actually pretty oily and I usually don't like to eat too much of any food that I need to pat out with a paper towel before I consume it. My main dish was a bun nem nuong - as if I'd remember that! There were also some funny accents in the name of the dish, but I'm too lazy to look up how to display it in this review. All I know is that they were two skewers of charbroiled pork meatballs that I thoroughly enjoyed. Because I like flavorful meat (optional: insert "That's what she said" line here)! Anyway, it was served on top of vermicelli noodles and I poured the complimentary fish sauce that came with my dish all over it. Unlike the appetizer, I definitely would not mind eating this again. Anyway, my bun nem nuong lunch was very filling and I walked out of here very satisfied, but Vietnamese food never really stood out as a first choice for me (except maybe pho), so I honestly could only give this place three stars. But I do like meatballs, and they served good meatballs, so this place is A-OK. read more

Thanh Vi is my go-to-place for pho! I live not far from this place and it always seems to hit the spot! I always order the beef pho with all the parts of the cow (rare rib eye, beef ball, tripe, extra tendon). It always bums me out when a pho place doesn't include tendon or tripe, like it will scare away customers or something. They also have a nice version of crispy sprill roll here. Also recommend the grilled pork skewers which are great! Reminscent of real street food from southeast asia. Parking here can be a bit of a disaster. The few spots adjacent to the restaurant are rare so you end up parking way on the other side of the building by the grocery store. Of course I will be back! read more

I've been coming here for too many years to count. Not sure how many times this place has changed ownership but one thing is consistent....their bamboo duck noodle soup is what has me coming back! I love that the duck salad is a generous size with thinly sliced pieces of duck and not full of bones. Depending on when you come, wait staff can be super attentive and friendly to not so much. The Bahn Mi was delicious (except they went a bit overboard on the cilantro - easy to pull off the sandwich though). The Pho was delicious as well, I'm not a Pho expert but it was yummy to my tummy. I am however, a fried rice expert.. and the fried rice was more fluffy rice than fried rice. With a few pieces of protein and bits of peas and carrots scattered about. I refrigerated the fried rice (as day old rice is best for fried rice) and refried it the next day. I added some veggies, homemade kimchi and bits of bacon. It was bomb. I didn't have the best experience here. I walked in and was seated at a dirty table. Food on the seats and on the table. I cleaned it off myself. A couple tables were seated after me and were given water and tea immediately. When waitress finally came to take my order I asked if I got tea and water like everyone else. She brought me water only. Literally EVERYONE else had hot tea but it wasn't offered to me for some reason. I ordered calamari and bun bo hue which is a delicious, spicy stew. Calamari was gross and tasted old. Waitress brought it out with no sauce. I started eating it and when I was almost done she brought out the dipping sauce. The three stars are for the stew.
