I love finding new vegetarian finds in the city, and I am so glad I stumbled upon Tenon Vegetarian Cuisine in Markham! This is a small restaurant located at Kennedy and Highway 7, packed among a lot of restaurants. This place does have take out and dine in options as well. I was skeptical at first because the place was empty on a Friday night, but trust me it must just be a hidden gem! The staff were kind, and allowed me to make modifications to party trays that were on a pre-set menu. Pricing is very affordable and you definitely get a bang for your buck! Now on to the food! This is a vegan sushi restaurant, and the amount of items on their menu is crazy. All different types of rolls, sashimi, appetizers the list goes on. I got a few different items because I wanted to give this place a fair shot. Came here with our vegan friends. The portions were decent for the price. The inside was decorated beautifully. I loved the green curry and pineapple fried rice. My husband's duck was really tasty as well. My friend was disappointed with the peanut chicken because it was too small for him so he ordered the duck as well for himself. Y'all, it was only 18 degrees today, cloudy, and very windy, but the inside was stuffy and hot. When I read reviews here that said it was "cozy", I expected comfortable, not stuffy and unventilated. Also, the spout on the teapot and the INSIDE of the miso soup bowl were BROKEN and chipped! It is IMPOSSIBLE to clean jagged pieces and rid it of all the bacteria. Gross! Know what's also gross? The tables were sticky. Food was meh. Max 3*, average 2*. The most delicious thing was the circular ham looking thing, and second is specifically the salmon sashimi. Other things were meh.. The ebi sushi was kinda mushy and didn't look like a shrimp shape lol. Taste was rather bland except the salmon. Not much complexity and did not taste like their meat counterparts. And why did my sushi roll have a hole as wide as a chopstick?? Check my pics. Barely any service. We had to hunt down the server to get our order taken, and after she brought out the dishes, she never came back. We also had to hunt her down by leaving our seating area to get the bill. My biggest gripe is considering that this is a veg place, why is the sashimi and sushi "meat" cut so thin and small? I finally went recently to a family gathering in which we had vegetarians and vegans in our group. The food at Tenon is very well thought out. They really have got a handle on the food they design. I've had mock meats and plant-based meat alternatives before and for the most part enjoy vegetarian and vegan food. I enjoyed most of the food offerings and some more than others. The service was great and we had no trouble getting a private room for our group. The plates were cleaned almost as soon as the food dropped, as we were sharing most of the dishes. I was lucky to get at least a couple of photos before the food disappeared. We really liked Tenon's take on animal and fish proteins and we will surely be back. My family feels the portion size to cost ratio is slightly off. Generally, the bento offers the best value with different maki and side dishes. Dumplings are perhaps not the best option for takeout. The wrappers are far too delicate and are time sensitive. Sitting in a takeout box, from experience is detrimental to the quality. Overall, Tenon is best for dine-in. I was exploring how good vegetarian sushi could be and my partner brought me to this place. They had sushi with imitations of different fishes. I would say shrimp imitation was the closest in taste. Overall the sushi wasn't bad but not as good as real fish. Also I absolutely loved sweet and sour eel and house special duck dishes which were vegetarian as well but the taste was so good and it did resemble meat in some ways, which was not my intention to necessarily taste the meat. This is my husband and my go to restaurant for Japanese food! We used to come here more often when they had AYCE sushi but their food is still amazing! They have such a wide assortment of vegan sushi and all of it tastes so authentic that during our very first visit, we had to confirm with the waitress that it was, in fact, vegan. We have just recently tried their vegan chicken and vegan beef teriyaki bento boxes for take out and it's our new favourite item to order! The restaurant has a very traditional Japaneses aesthetic and the little boxes and plates that they dishes come in are adorable. The private rooms are also nicely decorated! The staff are also very friendly and attentive throughout the meal. Parking is a breeze here since the restaurant shares the large parking lot with the rest of the plaza. We probably ordered too much food but it's hard to decide when you live far away and don't know when you will be back. This was our second visit and we stick to the Japanese menu and ordered things we can't get at home. Our sushi feast included 4 special rolls, 4 regular rolls, 2 hand rolls, and 1 appetizer. All the rolls had the rice on the outside and one of our special rolls, the Montreal Roll, was tempura roll where the entire roll is battered and fried. After scanning the menu for tempura rolls, In thought there were none so that was a pleasant surprise. Tenon is very generous with the avocado which I very much appreciated. My favorite roll was topped with avocado, a zillion thing slices crowded together. The king mushroom special roll was another favorite. It's five pieces and topped with 5 large bonus pieces of tempura mushroom in addition to the tempura mushroom inside the roll. As soon as we sat down, they brought us a hot pot of complementary green tea. The tea was permeated with the flavor of toasted rice and was quite lovely. A note to vegans - the items on the menu with cream cheese are not labeled with the red dot meaning "contains eggs or dairy" but I do believe they are made with dairy cream cheese. I first this I ordered was Philadelphia roll and the last thing I said was that we wanted the food vegan. The Philadelphia roll came without cream cheese so I can only assume the cream cheese is not vegan. For some reason the red dot only appears next to items with mayonnaise. We ordered the tom yum veggie seafood soup and sushi combo F (comes with 5 sashimi, 5 sushi, and 6 california rolls). Vegetarian sushi and sashimi found here! Tenon Vegetarian Cuisine (天恩中日素食料理) used to be a regular Japanese restaurant many, many years ago. I remember dining here at least ten years ago and remembering the visit to be quite mediocre. Since then, they have either been taken over by new management or switched to being a meat-free restaurant. When we arrived at 12 p.m. on a Saturday, I was surprised to see that there weren't many patrons inside at all. However, the atmosphere and decor of the restaurant was splendid. All the teapots, plates, cups, flowers on the table, and furnishings gave a luxurious vibe. The chef's sushi area was so nicely designed too with Japanese style lanterns. There were actually so many types of sushi rolls and rolls and dishes on the menu. Everything was all vegetarian. Even though a sushi roll may be made with "shrimp" or some kind of "fish", all of them were either soy-based or made from vegetables so that there was no animal by-product at all. I had to inquire about the ingredients with the server since I noticed that some items mentioned "soy-base" while others didn't, so the menu was a bit inconsistent. However, the server did confirm for me that every single one of their item were 100% vegetarian. The Green Dragon Roll had cucumber, tempura shrimp, imitation crab meat, avocado on top with barbecue sauce. It looked no different than a regular green dragon roll with real shrimp actually. It looked great. The "tempura shrimp" though inside the roll was definitely a vegetarian mock shrimp that tasted a bit chewy and dense. The Red Curry Soy-Chicken surprisingly didn't come with any rice. We had to order a serving of rice to go with the dish. It was soy chicken in red curry with coconut milk and basil. The soy chicken was akin to how most vegetarian meats taste like. I was impressed with the red curry as it was very smooth with a strong hint of coconut milk. It wasn't spicy at all. I actually drank all of the curry soup since it was so tasty. There were a lots of green peppers, red peppers, onions, and zucchinis in the dish. The prices here were reasonable and actually similar to what it would cost at a meat-friendly restaurant. Finally got to try Tenon! It's been on my list for so long but I hardly get the chance to go all the way to Markham. We chose the Combo F sushi plate which came with salmon and what I assume is a butterfish sashimi, shrimp sushi, pickled radish sushi, tuna sushi and two inari sushi, as well as 6 Cali rolls. It is wild how similar the experience is to regular sushi/sashimi! All were delicious. We also decided to try the beef teriyaki since my non-veg boyfriend isn't a fan of real or fake fish. The fish was so good and even he loved it! If you are going for a teriyaki fish I recommend going with a rice dish as well to accompany it. You might not like meat substitutes, but I'd argue that Tenon does it as well as anyone. This classy looking restaurant serves vegetarian versions of classic Japanese sushi dishes and more with outstanding customer service... And as much loyalty to their origin dish in taste and texture as I think is possible. What We Got: Chicken Nuggets and Combo B platter What I Liked: Nuggets, and the sashimi! Notable for great service as well What I Didn't: oh man parking is horrendous. Restaurant design imitates traditional sushi restaurants, including decor, staff uniform (including chef)... but of course, everything is vegetarian! It wasn't too busy on a Saturday evening (which I'm mildly disappointed at, but it might just be that they are serving very much a niche audience). Service was fast, friendly, and accommodating of my particular requests. One thing important to know: The meats are not going to taste exactly like meat. You WILL be able to tell the difference. But the texture and taste is probably going to be as close as it gets with current technology. Crunchy things like soy chicken nuggets can be deceptive just on the first couple of bites, but it won't hold up to the exact grain and flavour. Other things like sashimi have amazingly similar texture but lack the same intensity of fishy aftertaste and smell, but the wasabi helps. Both were good. The spicy salmon roll was not made with the small chunks of salmon and mixed with spicy mayo as other places. The roll contained a full thick strip of salmon, tempura bits, and then a small dollop of chili sauce on each piece. It was my favorite item, but also the only non vegan item. The gold roll is filled with a fake crabmeat and topped with mango and sweet mango sauce. I won't comment on the filling of the roll as I strongly prefer really seafood.
