Mock duck (on top) and mock chicken (hiding underneath)

As I was waiting for my boyfriend to get milk tea from Marathon, I couldn't help but notice the people dropping by to pick up chinese vegetarian food. The customers seems to be regulars as they chat with the lady scooping and cutting the bean curd products that were on display. I peered into the window and had a look at the products on offer. The looked pretty good - don't have excessively vibrant colour and not super oily. I was eyeing the mock chicken and a fried bean curd spring roll looking item. The mock chicken is my go-to item to order when I get Chinese vegetarian food. It was marinated in a diluted soya sauce and therefore you can still taste the bean flavour. The spring roll like product is called mock duck. The outside compose of multiple thin bean curd layers and the center has a slightly more chewy, thicker layer. Both items cost ~$7 and I will definitely come here again to pick up more bean curd products.

The Buddhist Vegetarian Kitchen has been around for ages. It is one of the oldest vegetarian restaurants in this area! While, food can be oily, as with most more traditional Buddhist vegetarian restaurants; their dishes are none-the-less delicious. The oil used in one dish can probably be used for four to five dishes at another restaurant. To avoid "a moment on your lips, a lifetime on our hips/guts" situation, you can inform the kitchen to cook with less oil when the order is being placed. This will reduce the mishaps of the dishes being drenched in oil. My go-to dish is stirred fry rice cake. It's usually enough for 2 meals. it's always delicious. Rice cakes are constantly perfectly cooked with a slight chew and not too soft. Overall, support local and visit The Buddhist Vegetarian Kitchen if you are in the area! Take out and delivery on UBER Eats are available during this physical isolation period.

What can I say? Maybe it was the dishes we ordered but our first experience here may be our last. We are recent vegetarian converts and have been trying out new vegetarian restaurant options. We came here hoping to find a new go to place and to our dismay, that is not going to be the case. Based on reviews and our personal preference, we ordered beef & mushroom soup (meh), taro fried fish (a-ok), fried tofu balls in brown sauce and veg (yuck), salted fish fried rice (the best dish of the night) and a plate of mock duck meat(meh). I still think that eating vegetarian shouldn't mean compromising on flavours and sadly I found food here under-whelming. I think I'll stick to eating at regular Chinese restaurant and just order meatless dishes with full flavours.

I have only ever stopped in to buy the takeout and have never tried their dishes but the takeout vegetarian items are amazing. We usually get their small mix or large mix with an addition of a roll or two of the mock chicken (I think). They are sold in rolls and to me, mimics intestines hah. Their mix is less oily and more homemade vibe compared to the pre made boxes sold at supermarkets. In a mix they have different items to mimic chicken, pork etc. You can order from the staff that mans the cart at the front of the store. Once you order, they will snip the big pieces into a carton for you. Their prices definitely did go up compared to last year but for their quality I would be coming back.

Growing up in Scarborough, I've come to this restaurant often and have been satisfied each visit. When I became vegan, I learned to appreciate this place even more. The prices are low for large portions but I think that they reflect what you should expect from this restaurant as well. Their food isn't outstanding compared to bigger restaurant chains such as King's Cafe, but it's still a great and cheap option! Some dishes are hit or miss but the sweet and sour pork as well as their fried noodle with vegetarian beef have always been a staple when my family orders from them. The restaurant, itself, is on the smaller end, so expect a wait time during the busy Chinese celebration days. The parking, as many people have mentioned, is also hectic since it's in a busy plaza with many other small stores, restaurants and fast food places. I would recommend not parking in the parking area in front of the restaurant but probably the parking lot facing the back of the restaurant, where I usually find some vacant spots.

One of my favourite Chinese vegetarian places around this area. I love the Chinese gluten dishes. Usually, we get the assorted ones that has the curry flavour, sweet and sour flavour as well as items that look really similar to meat such as BBQ pork and the pig intestine. Overall, the dishes are decent priced - roughly $8-$10 each in a relatively large portion that is good for sharing amongst families. We enjoy getting the Fried noodle with mixed vegetable, which is only for $6.95. Fried noodles indicate that the sides of the noodles are crunchy and lightly fried, but since they cover the noodles with a lot of sauce, the noodle are usually soft and covered with sauce. Another one of my favourites are the Fried stuffed yam fish with sweet and sour sauce for $10.50 for dishes to go along with rice. It has always been one of my favourites, and definitely not easy to make as it takes a lot of time to make. Be careful when you eat it though, it can be pretty hot when it comes out fresh from the kitchen.

This place is great. When you order "dim sum", it's really not the usual dim sum that you find in most Chinese restaurant, it's actually a platter of different flavored tofu, tofu sheets, and gluten. You get a sour one, and there is one firm-er than the others which is a mock BBQ pork. A pressed firm tofu would act as a piece of chicken breast, and there is also a curry flavored fried gluten ball. Some of their dishes are just simple stir-fry of vegetables, but there are few amazing dishes that they use gluten and turn it into mock meat that you really can't tell the difference. The Salty fried chicken with fried noddles is one of the best. Even with a sauce over everything, the chicken pieces would still be crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The most amazing thing is, it even seems like it's real meat, that it's bursting with flavor (it's juicy!) when you bite into it! You would see this place packed with people at lunch times when it's weekends, or when it's the first day (or 15th) of the month on the lunar calender. Normally they are really quite, so that when they are busy, the service suffers a little. If you want the "dim sum", you should order it the first thing you get inside, as the only server in the place will have to make that for you, instead of sending that one order to the kitchen. If you trying it for the first time, go there at around 2pm, or early evening at 5 - 6pm, that way you can be sure you get your food in a much more reasonable speed. they close at 9pm, so the "dim sum" wouldn't have any many selection. (you don't really get to choose, so it's a tip that you should get there early.)

Delicious and healthy even though it is far from downtown by my standard. The price is reasonable.

The posters outside caught my eye, and I decided to come back with a group of three friends to try it out. We came a bit late around 8 PM, and most of the fish were already sold out except the original. We ended up ordering the Signature Spicy Grilled BBQ Fish ($40), a whole fish served bubbling hot with three toppings (potatoes, spam, and lotus root). You can choose between catfish and turbot, we chose the turbot fish. It looked extremely spicy, but the spice level was actually perfect. It was a bit on the oily side, but pairing it with rice balanced it out nicely. The fish was very tender and buttery, everything tasted amazing! We also ordered the Stir-Fried Egg with Tomato. The eggs were soft, the tomato sauce was rich. Not to mention the portion size was huge, we even had leftovers after eating until we were full. The restaurant itself was spacious, clean, and had plenty of seating. I think they were doing some sort of promotion so they gave us a $25 off coupon, though it expired pretty quickly so we didn't get to use it. I'd definitely come back for that grilled fish.

A few of their dishes come out on a sizzling plate with flames underneath. They are still in soft-opening mode with several specials. You can see the menus via a QR code. The Hunan cuisine is listed as "Hunan Noodles" and the Szechuan cuisine is listed as "Chopfire Menu". The Szechuan dishes are listed with 1 to 3 chilies representing the spiciness. If you can't handle spicy, then avoid eating the chili pieces and you might "survive". The restaurant decided to minimize their food offerings so that they can focus on refining their dishes in terms of quality and taste, including from customer feedback. We ordered the following: 1. Signature Spicy Grilled BBQ Fish ($39.95). 2. Home Stir Fried Beef ($21.95). 3. Bullfrog with Baby Ginger ($19.95). 4. Stir-Fried Cauliflower with Preserved Pork ($15.95). 5. Drunk Oolong (charcoal roasted oolong tea base) x 2 ($5.95 x 2). 6. Lemon Taro Balls ($7.95). We also saw the following: 7. Stir-Fried Sliced Pork with Green Pepper Noodle Soup ($9.99). First 10 customers each day, only pays $1.00. 8. Ink Painting Cocktail ($5.95). The Signature Spicy Grilled BBQ Fish came out on a huge sizzling platter. The BBQ Fish, a Turbot Fish, was very fresh and flaky, easily coming off the bone. There is no head attached like at typical Chinese restaurants but it would not have fit in the platter. The platter had a delicious sauce (soupy consistency and not sweet), luncheon meat slices, lotus root slices, and two other vegetables, along with chili pieces. The entire dish tasted great together with the various flavours. The menu listed it as 2-chili spicy but I could handle it by avoiding the chili pieces. The Home Stir Fried Beef is tender. It is listed as 3-chili but I could handle it by avoiding the chili pieces. The Bullfrog with Baby Ginger has the bullfrog cut up in little pieces; no you don't see a whole frog! The meat was actually good but most pieces have bones in it, so it takes time to eat it carefully. There was ginger slices in it but it, but we thought the slices were quite large! The Stir-Fried Cauliflower with Preserved Pork was very delicious! It came in a sizzling plate. The Cauliflower was flavourful and was not crunchy and not too soft. I've never had preserved pork slices before; it was quite good, not as salty as Chinese preserved vegetables. The Drunk Oolong has comes in a small bowl a with gin and ice. On the side, they include pieces of the charcoal roasted oolong tea leaves so you can smell it; quite a good smell indeed. You can also order it without the gin, which is what I ordered for mine (since I don't drink alcohol). It was such a nice drink! The Lemon Taro Balls dessert was pretty. In the centre was a slice of lemon. The customer service was good. There is plenty of indoor table and counter seating, including a small private room at the back. There is also an outdoor patio during warmer weather. There is pop music playing in the background. There is no free WiFi. The restaurant is wheelchair accessible, but there is no door-open button. There are two gender-neutral washrooms downstairs, so they are not wheelchair accessible. There is paid neighbourhood street parking. Review 2025-026

From the moment we walked in, the space already set the tone.. dark, dramatic, elegant, and beautifully designed without feeling overly stiff. It has that upscale energy that makes dinner feel like an occasion before you've even ordered anything. Food-wise, there was a lot to love. The signature apple wood roasted Peking duck was definitely a highlight, especially with the tableside carving, which made the whole experience feel even more polished and memorable. The skin had that beautiful lacquered finish, and the duck was rich, flavorful, and very satisfying. We also ordered a few larger dishes for the table, and I really appreciated how everything still felt refined without losing that comforting, indulgent side of Chinese dining. Some dishes leaned rich and luxurious, others were lighter and more aromatic, so the meal never felt repetitive. Service was another standout. Attentive without hovering, smooth without being too formal.. exactly the kind of service you hope for in a restaurant like this. Overall, Mott 32 is absolutely the kind of place I'd come back to for a special dinner, celebration, or just one of those nights when you want the meal to feel a little more elevated than usual.

Also, when we call to check if dim sum is being served, it makes sense to inform us of the dining room closure instead of having us come in anyway. We settled for eating in the lounge which ended up being good because bartender, Aiki?, was excellent as our server. Really great. Ordered the following: King prawn Har gow: standard. Not worth the premium Mott charges. Miso black cod dumpling: not good. Wouldn't order again Shredded Peking Duck Spring Roll, Sliced Vegetable : Excellent. We loved this! Nice and crunchy. Delicious duck inside. Good vinegar dipping sauce. Good volume Hot & Sour Iberico Pork Shanghainese Soup Dumplings: Fantastic and unique. The dumplings don't really need dipping sauce since inside there is a hot and sour soup along with pork. These are unique and delicious. Fried Wagyu beef taro croquette : pretty good but really tasted like a Jamaican patty Cold noodle with shredded duck : very generous with meat. Honestly a lot more than any other restaurant that serves this. To be fair no one charges this much either so it should. Flavour could be stronger but certainly decent. Fresh Mango, Coconut, Glutinous Rice Roll: nice fresh dessert. Our favourite. Frozen xiao long bao with chocolate and nut: Tastes like a mochi. Not bad. Dragonball Zen - fun name. Delicious drink. Jasmine Dragon Ball Infused Tanqueray Gin / Peach Liquor Lime / Rose Water / Mint / Seltzer Over $200 for this meal before tip. It's premium an debatable if with it. Will be back but just occasionally.
