Have tried a number of items here. Mind you, Im neither vegan nor vegetarian but the food here could satisfy even the pickiest meat eaters. The portion sizes are great. The textures are surprising. The food is delicious. There is a "salmon" that looks and feels just like sashimi down to the white stripes that go along each cut. They serve this on a massive kale salad with chickpeas, piles of thin carrots and a rich tahini dressing. Ive also had the "chicken". The breading is so tasty and crispy. When dipped in the sauce, could really fool you into thinking its chicken. Also have tried the mac and cheese and fried rice. Their drinks/ smoothies are delivious too. I recommend the avocado. Wasnt a fan of the bbq pork buns(dry and not enough filling). I removed 1 star for the customer service. A group of us recently went out for dinner in Unionville, not realizing that Black Bear Fusion is now only a ghost kitchen, operating out of Bo Tree Plant-Based Cuisine, their original location. After our initial confusion, we decided to try their food. We certainly didn't mind eating vegetarian. My two closest dining companions ordered the Chickenless Katsu Curry Omurice. It looked good. Visually, you couldn't tell that it wasn't real meat. It must have tasted good too because one friend, a chef, almost licked his plate clean! I had ordered a pasta dish with a medley of mushrooms in a creamy sauce, topped with Nori (dried Japanese seaweed). It looked really good but, in this case, looks were very deceiving. Once I got past the Nori, the dish was very bland. The "cream" sauce was thin like 2% milk, and flavourless. Oddly, there were significant gaps in the timing of the food. From the first to the last dish, it felt like it took half an hour. Realistically, it may have been around 20 minutes. Regardless, the timing was noticeably off. The table next to us experienced similar issues. Other than the timing of the meals, the service was pretty good. Our water glasses were always topped up and empty plates were cleared efficiently. Went here with a few friends expecting to find Black Bear Japanese Fusion, unfortunately, we found out when we got there that it's only a ghost kitchen offering take out inside Bo Tree! Bo Tree is plant based, with offerings like faux chicken and fish,with the option of eggs. I got the faux chicken katsu omurice and while I could tell it wasn't chicken, it wasn't bad. The omelette was cooked perfectly, the sauce was flavourful. My friends had the mushroom pasta and bowl but didn't have the same decent experience. The pasta cream sauce was like water, sloshing around on the plate, and was quite flavourless aside from the seaweed. My other friend who got the bowl said the faux salmon was quite wet and squishy. It was definitely an experience, and we could all eat a little more plant based, but I may stick to ordering the chicken katsu omurice from Black Bear for pickup. read more

Honestly this place was pretty decent. Id say my favourite was the chicken katsu- portion size was great and as someone who used to eat chicken, the chicken was pretty good! A vegan friendly restaurant with a lot of options. I went for lunch just as the store opened, but it quickly filled up with people. There was only one person manning the front of the house, so service was a bit slow. The restaurant has a very large menu of popular Asian dishes with a vegan twist. Not so Chicken burger with fries - Fries were crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, so that was nice. The chicken burger was 'chicken strips' on a toasted bun. The strips were vegan versions with meat texture really relied on the sauce to carry flavour. The batter was too dry for my liking, and it looked a deep brown colour suggesting over fried 'chicken' strips. As a whole the tar tar sauce (wish it was spicy mayo) was the cohesive piece that brought everything together making it a decent dish. Whenever I see a menu with 30+ items and short staffed at the front of house I drop my expectations of the place. I would only recommend this place to a vegetarian due to their extensive menu. Yummmm this place was soooo delicious for a plant based restaurant !!! We had the chickenless Katsu curry omurice, okonomiyaki beyond burger with fries and Pineapple crème brûlée. My partner legit couldn't tell lol .The curry, rice and omurice was sooo comforting but also on the heavier side. I'm typically not a fan of curry but even I found this to be super yummy and addicting esp eating the curry / rice together :) The Okonomiyaki beyond burger was pretty good too but it basically tasted like beyond burger with seaweed on it lol . Came at around 1pm on a Sunday and it was pretty empty. We got to choose whatever table we wanted. Service was decent and food arrived shortly after we placed our order. The food came out really hot. We ordered the Chickenless Katsu Curry Omurice and Kinoko Spaghetti. The portions were quite generous and filling. The katsu was nice and crispy and the spaghetti was creamy and flavourful with enough sauce at the bottom. I'm not sure if it was nearing the end of the day, but my order for the chicken katsu omurice was a let down, the rice was undercooked and dry. The curry didn't help soften the rice, the egg was overcooked, it wasn't runny, instead more the consistency of scrambled eggs. The spaghetti bolognese had a sweet tomato sauce, but it tasted like there was canned sardines or some sort of fish mixed in there. Perhaps it was fusion inspired that I wasn't used to the taste? It's crazy that I have hit 2,100 reviews with this one. It's cool that I am reviewing an eatery in my own city of Markham. I will admit that this review has some twists and turns. It parallels my Yelp experience of trying to figure out a rhythm of checking in, posting photos, and writing reviews. Luckily, I finally do have my act together these days. For a while, I have flagged eating at Black Bear. I have seen Groupons and such over the years, but never made it here. Yes, this review is under Bo Tree. I'll explain in a bit. I did a search on Uber Eats last Wednesday and decided to get some takeout from here after running errands. There was a buy-one-get-one-free deal happening. I said yes to the following BOGO items: - Angus beef supreme burger with mixed greens - Bolognese spaghetti I was running my usual errands in Whitchurch-Stouffville. It would take 25 minutes for my order to complete, which was perfect for me to casually drive back to Markham. I got to the plaza and I couldn't find Black Bear. I drove around the plaza like a tourist. Nope, nothing. Luckily, I was able to look at the unit number. It was 3. It matched Bo Tree Plant-Based Cuisine. Really? Interesting. I walked in. A cheerful, energetic woman greeted me. I asked if this place was Black Bear. She said that it was through Uber Eats only, as it's now a virtual kitchen. Ah! Mystery solved! I said my name and provided my order number. Sure enough, two plastic bags with food were mine. I was so thrilled. I thanked her and was relieved to have fetched my dinner from the correct eatery. After putting away all my groceries, I went to town on my food. Yes, I bought a lot, but I was thrilled that I didn't need to cook the following day. I started with the bolognese spaghetti. The portion seemed smaller than I had imagined. I am so used to the large Hong Kong-style spaghetti that I had to adjust. The spaghetti was al dente and cooked perfectly. The tomato sauce was fresh. The description mentioned veggies in the sauce, but I didn't get a whole lot. It was more tomato sauce to me. It was also more acidic than I had anticipated, but it was still yummy. The place was not generous on the parmesan. I ended up making my own parmesan cheese rain on my spaghetti to compensate for the dash of it that I got. The spaghetti came with miso soup as a starter. Weird? Yes. It's a first for me! It worked, though. I loved the generous tofu cubes and seaweed. The soup wasn't salty, which I appreciated. I had half of my angus burger. The bun was so fluffy. It was toasted. The burger was a pretty good size. I enjoyed the sauteed mushrooms, cheddar cheese, tomato slice, mayo, and more as toppings. The downside was that the beef patty was super salty. It was flavourful and done perfectly. It was like the beef patty was balancing out the lack of salt in the miso soup. I also had the salad. It was essentially a lot of finely spiralled carrots over mixed greens. The greens were fresh and crunchy. The dressing was so good! I tasted miso and sesame in it. I loved it so much. The side salad was excellent! Both dishes held up well as leftovers. The bolognese tasted much better the following day. I still had to put more parmesan over it. The Bo Tree part of this restaurant offers vegetarian and vegan options. Black Bear has some vegan options, but it mainly features meat options. I managed to get a purple power drink (strawberry, banana, raspberry, blueberry, blackberry) with almond beverage. It tasted pretty good. I felt that the size was small for $9.99, though. It was definitely a weird experience, but everything worked out pretty well. I may give Bo Tree's menu a try next time, as I like going meatless now and again. Their food is amazing, we ordered from uber eat this time with BOGO, katsu (pork) curry rice and angus beef burger with fries. They packed very well, with curry sauce on aside. Drove by and spotted this new vegetarian restaurant. My mom is vegetarian so decided to give this a try and I will say I was pleasantly surprised. Most entrees were around $14-16 a dish. I highly recommend trying the Chicken Katsu Curry Omurice and BBQ Pulled Pork sandwich! I mean, just looking at the picture of the chicken katsu dish could have fooled me into thinking it was actually chicken. Loved the texture of the chicken seitan, the inside even kind of looked like meat! It was a huge thick piece of egg! Probably at least 3 eggs in there. I'm not a fan of curry but I definitely appreciated this dish. Very delicious. The BBQ Pulled Pork sandwich was my favourite dish of the night. The smoked jackfruit definitely fooled me; had great pulled pork like texture. Loved the sauce, super tasty. At first I was a bit hesitant when I saw the okonomiyaki burger as I thought it would look more like an okonomiyaki pancake as the bun vs. just a normal burger with the okonomiyaki sauces. However, to my surprise it was actually very tasty. The meatless patty was grilled, flavourful and the texture was on point. The Pad Thai and the Spaghetti Meatballs were very mediocre in my opinion. Was not a fan of the type of rice noodle they used for the Pad Thai, it didn't have much of a strong flavor to it either. As for the Spaghetti meatballs, the plant-based meatball was not to my liking. It had a bit of an acquired taste to it - much more different than the other mock meat dishes. TL;DR This is a great find, and anyone looking for a good vegetarian / vegan place can eat here blindfolded and have a great time! The restaurant is on the small side, so book ahead if you think it'll be busy. The place is modern, quaint, and clean. The restrooms are well maintained and clean. But the food steals the show. We had the appetizer platter, and it was a delight, especially the squid (my favorite). The katsu and omurice were spot on. Finding a chef that can cook an omelet properly (runny in the center) at this price point is rare. And the curry sauce was delicious. The Peking duck pizza is probably the most authentic vegetarian Peking duck I've ever had. The flavors are spot on, and the boson sauce isn't too sweet. Finally, the dish that blew me away the most was the "Sorrowful Rice." The name is a nod to the Hong Kong comedy "The God of Cookery" and a take on char siu rice. Honestly, with a dish like that, you don't want to eat meat again. The mock pork was soft, and the sauce had the right amount of sweetness. It's genuinely awesome. Would I change anything? Been wanting to try this spot out for awhile now & decided to give it a go. I ordered the double decker nachos & peking duck pizza for take-out & had to wait another 5 mins for my food after I arrived to pick it up (no biggie). When I opened the box of nachos, I was SO disappointed to see I paid $15 for a mound of plain chips. There was probably a pinch of mozzarella added, with no bell peppers either. I may as well have bought a $3 bag of Tostitos from the grocery store and eaten them plain. Not to mention, half the chips were soggy and inedible. Probably because they made the nachos way in advance before my pizza was finished. First, the Mighty Mushroom Roast taste great, the Sunny Pizza is alright, but not a huge difference than if I order a vege pizza from other pizza shop, but this one cost more and slightly smaller. The Avocado J style rice burger was Ok, but the rice were made slightly too hard to eat. The fries are crispy, love their fries. There are other plant based food to try, I may return to try others. Service was good. Tips automatically charged to the bill. Tried this place for the 1st time last night. Everything was delicious! I was very surprised at how many types of cuisines they have. We got the banana blossom fish and chips, pork katsu curry rice, and bbq pork and choy sum over rice! The banana blossom fish is better than what we've tried in London! The katsu curry rice was topped with a soft egg omelet that melts when you break into it! And finally, the bbq pork and steamed choy sum was simple but is my favorite from the meal! The bbq pork is sweet and savory and is FULL of smokiness from the charring, and goes perfectly with the sunny side up egg on top of the rice! Had dinner here on a weeknight. My husband and I ordered the Buffalo cauliflower wings appetizer, the special dish of the day "Taiwanese braised beef noodle soup" and the sunshine pizza. The food was very mediocre. The cauliflower wings were huge with a thick batter that wasn't crispy... It was soggy and the sauce was extremely sour. Not very enjoyable at all. The noodle soup was really disappointing as well. It came with udon noodles which is not authentic Taiwanese at all. It also came with a lot of radishes, not common in that kind of noodle soup either. Worst of it all the radish was very fibrous.. And the way the radish was chopped you can tell the chef is not experienced. Lastly, the pizza that my husband ordered was also a disappointment. The pizza sauce tasted like tomato puree straight from a can. Not seasoned very well. It had quite a bit of veggie toppings, which was nice. But that's about it. Not a very flavorful pizza. No surprises here. Overall, I wasn't satisfied with the food. Most veggie restaurants charge a premium price but Bo Tree is more affordable. We were a big fan of Black Bear, and terribly sorry to see it closed. When we saw the new restaurant, purportedly also owned by the same people, we had to try it. We came on a Thursday night and ordered the Kinoko Spaghetti and Bo Tree Burrito. The Kinoko Spaghetti was surprisingly delicious-the sauce was rich and decadent, the Enoki mushrooms were crispy, and the spaghetti was perfectly cooked.
