    Chickenless Katsu Curry Omurice
    Chris C.

A group of us recently went out for dinner in Unionville, not realizing that Black Bear Fusion is now only a ghost kitchen, operating out of Bo Tree Plant-Based Cuisine, their original location. After our initial confusion, we decided to try their food. We certainly didn't mind eating vegetarian. My two closest dining companions ordered the Chickenless Katsu Curry Omurice. It looked good. Visually, you couldn't tell that it wasn't real meat. It must have tasted good too because one friend, a chef, almost licked his plate clean! I had ordered a pasta dish with a medley of mushrooms in a creamy sauce, topped with Nori (dried Japanese seaweed). It looked really good but, in this case, looks were very deceiving. Once I got past the Nori, the dish was very bland. The "cream" sauce was thin like 2% milk, and flavourless. Oddly, there were significant gaps in the timing of the food. From the first to the last dish, it felt like it took half an hour. Realistically, it may have been around 20 minutes. Regardless, the timing was noticeably off. The table next to us experienced similar issues. Other than the timing of the meals, the service was pretty good. Our water glasses were always topped up and empty plates were cleared efficiently. Would I come back? Sure, but I would definitely try a different dish.

Went here with a few friends expecting to find Black Bear Japanese Fusion, unfortunately, we found out when we got there that it's only a ghost kitchen offering take out inside Bo Tree! Bo Tree is plant based, with offerings like faux chicken and fish, with the option of eggs. I got the faux chicken katsu omurice and while I could tell it wasn't chicken, it wasn't bad. The omelette was cooked perfectly, the sauce was flavourful. My friends had the mushroom pasta and bowl but didn't have the same decent experience. The pasta cream sauce was like water, sloshing around on the plate, and was quite flavourless aside from the seaweed. My other friend who got the bowl said the faux salmon was quite wet and squishy. It was definitely an experience, and we could all eat a little more plant based, but I may stick to ordering the chicken katsu omurice from Black Bear for pickup.

A vegan friendly restaurant with a lot of options. I went for lunch just as the store opened, but it quickly filled up with people. There was only one person manning the front of the house, so service was a bit slow. The restaurant has a very large menu of popular Asian dishes with a vegan twist. Not so Chicken burger with fries - Fries were crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, so that was nice. The chicken burger was 'chicken strips' on a toasted bun. The strips were vegan versions with meat texture really relied on the sauce to carry flavour. The batter was too dry for my liking, and it looked a deep brown colour suggesting over fried 'chicken' strips. As a whole the tar tar sauce (wish it was spicy mayo) was the cohesive piece that brought everything together making it a decent dish. Whenever I see a menu with 30+ items and short staffed at the front of house I drop my expectations of the place. I would only recommend this place to a vegetarian due to their extensive menu. Unlikely to revisit this establishment again.

Yummmm this place was soooo delicious for a plant based restaurant !!! We had the chickenless Katsu curry omurice, okonomiyaki beyond burger with fries and Pineapple crème brûlée. Definitely recommend everyone to try the chickenless katsu . The Katsu was honestly cooked so well that it tasted like real fried chicken . My partner legit couldn't tell lol .The curry, rice and omurice was sooo comforting but also on the heavier side. I'm typically not a fan of curry but even I found this to be super yummy and addicting esp eating the curry / rice together :) The Okonomiyaki beyond burger was pretty good too but it basically tasted like beyond burger with seaweed on it lol . I should have known given the name and the description:p still good but not really special or unique and def something easily replicated at home for a much cheaper price . The fries that came with it were SO crispy and delicious!! The pineapple crème brûlée was SO aesthetically pleasing ! It looked amazing !!! Taste wise unfortunately it was our least favourite. I liked the fresh fruits but creme brûlée was a bit mushy tasting. I do prefer the classic crème brûlée over this. Service was pretty good . The only off thing was they had cleaning supplies everywhere . For example , there was a Dyson vacuum right behind our table lol and the washroom stalls was also storage for cleaning supplies. It didnt bother me too much as the place felt otherwise pretty clean so didn't feel uncomfortable dining in there. Overall definitely recommend everyone to check this place out !

Came at around 1pm on a Sunday and it was pretty empty. We got to choose whatever table we wanted. Service was decent and food arrived shortly after we placed our order. The food came out really hot. We ordered the Chickenless Katsu Curry Omurice and Kinoko Spaghetti. The portions were quite generous and filling. The katsu was nice and crispy and the spaghetti was creamy and flavourful with enough sauce at the bottom. The miso soup and milk tea came with the katsu set and they were kind of flavourless and just okay. The main dishes were quite good nonetheless!

Hey, so I know Black Bear Japanese Fusion and Bo Tree share the kitchen. Black Bear can only be done through delivery and well... let's just say Waiter Barry and/or the kitchen staff might've pulled a fucky wucky tonight. I ordered through doordash for a Chicken Katsu Curry Omurice and Minestrone Soup with a Honey Yuzu drink. The last two are fine. Tell me how in the fuck the curry of CURRY omurice was forgotten in the dish. It's a damn shame because I reviewed this kitchen quite highly a couple months ago.

By far the best plant based restaurant I've been to! All the foods were realistic and tasted far too close to meat!! The servers were extremely friendly and kept us topped up with water fairly often (never got to the bottom of the glass) Would highly recommend to try if you are curious about good meat alternatives

Amazing vegan options here. Staff was friendly. Great deals for lunch etc. Bring cash for discount. Peking duck pizza was so unique and so delicious. I don't live in the area, but I wish I did for this place! I want to try more!

I had the vegan dan dan noodles. They looked better in the photo than they tasted but for some reason, 2 years later I'm here wanting to eat them again. The location is far from where I live so I doubt I'll be able to be in the area anytime soon. The ambiance was very nice however for a small birthday dinner, which is what I was celebrating. Service was quick and efficient also.

It's crazy that I have hit 2,100 reviews with this one. It's cool that I am reviewing an eatery in my own city of Markham. I will admit that this review has some twists and turns. It parallels my Yelp experience of trying to figure out a rhythm of checking in, posting photos, and writing reviews. Luckily, I finally do have my act together these days. For a while, I have flagged eating at Black Bear. I have seen Groupons and such over the years, but never made it here. Yes, this review is under Bo Tree. I'll explain in a bit. I did a search on Uber Eats last Wednesday and decided to get some takeout from here after running errands. There was a buy-one-get-one-free deal happening. I said yes to the following BOGO items: - Angus beef supreme burger with mixed greens - Bolognese spaghetti I was running my usual errands in Whitchurch-Stouffville. It would take 25 minutes for my order to complete, which was perfect for me to casually drive back to Markham. I got to the plaza and I couldn't find Black Bear. I drove around the plaza like a tourist. Nope, nothing. Luckily, I was able to look at the unit number. It was 3. It matched Bo Tree Plant-Based Cuisine. Really? Interesting. I walked in. A cheerful, energetic woman greeted me. I asked if this place was Black Bear. She said that it was through Uber Eats only, as it's now a virtual kitchen. Ah! Mystery solved! I said my name and provided my order number. Sure enough, two plastic bags with food were mine. I was so thrilled. I thanked her and was relieved to have fetched my dinner from the correct eatery. After putting away all my groceries, I went to town on my food. Yes, I bought a lot, but I was thrilled that I didn't need to cook the following day. I started with the bolognese spaghetti. The portion seemed smaller than I had imagined. I am so used to the large Hong Kong-style spaghetti that I had to adjust. The spaghetti was al dente and cooked perfectly. The tomato sauce was fresh. The description mentioned veggies in the sauce, but I didn't get a whole lot. It was more tomato sauce to me. It was also more acidic than I had anticipated, but it was still yummy. The place was not generous on the parmesan. I ended up making my own parmesan cheese rain on my spaghetti to compensate for the dash of it that I got. The spaghetti came with miso soup as a starter. Weird? Yes. It's a first for me! It worked, though. I loved the generous tofu cubes and seaweed. The soup wasn't salty, which I appreciated. I had half of my angus burger. The bun was so fluffy. It was toasted. The burger was a pretty good size. I enjoyed the sauteed mushrooms, cheddar cheese, tomato slice, mayo, and more as toppings. The downside was that the beef patty was super salty. It was flavourful and done perfectly. It was like the beef patty was balancing out the lack of salt in the miso soup. I also had the salad. It was essentially a lot of finely spiralled carrots over mixed greens. The greens were fresh and crunchy. The dressing was so good! I tasted miso and sesame in it. I loved it so much. The side salad was excellent! Both dishes held up well as leftovers. The bolognese tasted much better the following day. I still had to put more parmesan over it. The Bo Tree part of this restaurant offers vegetarian and vegan options. Black Bear has some vegan options, but it mainly features meat options. I managed to get a purple power drink (strawberry, banana, raspberry, blueberry, blackberry) with almond beverage. It tasted pretty good. I felt that the size was small for $9.99, though. It was definitely a weird experience, but everything worked out pretty well. I may give Bo Tree's menu a try next time, as I like going meatless now and again. I had a good experience at Black Bear after the virtual kitchen mystery was solved! (226)

We ordered take out 2nd time from this place. Because of Covid, I think they go back to "black bear restaurant" again. Their food is amazing, we ordered from uber eat this time with BOGO, katsu (pork) curry rice and angus beef burger with fries. They packed very well, with curry sauce on aside. They also gave us free miso soup, thank you We had carbonara last time and bolognese tomatoes with beef, they are both good. Definitely recommend this place!

The Chickenless Curry Omurice ~ The curry sauce is GREAT for dipping fries into as well haha

! I'm so shocked by the rating that they have on Yelp D: I truly believe they deserve an overall higher rating based on my own experiences with both their takeout and their dine-in (from way back before the pandemic!) -Menu now lists which options are vegan vs vegetarian (IMPORTANT DISTINCTION!) -Such a unique menu of vegetarian/vegan options :D -Very friendly service from the staff -Food is extremely flavorful and well-packed for takeout Now what should you order, right? -[MEATLESS SHEPHERD'S PIE] $14.99 *Comes with fries/salad! This is crafted from textured vegetable protein, mashed potatoes, corn, butter, cream, peas, and carrots! This is a VEGETARIAN dish, not a vegan one. This tasted as close to a regular shepherd's pie as possible without actually having any meat in it :D -[OKONOMIYAKI MEATLESS BURGER] $14.99 *Comes with fries/salad! This burger has a VEGAN option available but it is inherently only VEGETARIAN so remember to make that distinction depending on your dietary restriction :D This burger is made with a vegan beef patty, lettuce, tomato, shredded seaweed, dried shredded mushrooms, mayo and tonkatsu sauce ~ Oh my goodness, it's such an explosion of flavors in your mouth and I'm definitely not complaining! If you like the flavor of okonomiyaki normally, you'll LOVE this burger too -[CHICKENLESS KATSU CURRY OMURICE] $14.99 This is made with deep fried chicken seitan, potatoes, carrots, curry sauce, omelette, and white rice! APPARENTLY, there's a VEGAN option available for this so remember to ask about it if your heart is set on it. The curry was very flavorful and went really well with the rest of the food. I love curry so this is always a dish I want to order over and over again. Grab takeout from them during these tough times! You'll want to make sure that after all of this blows over that you still have tasty vegetarian/vegan options around to choose from :D

Came here based on my friends' recommendation and we were really impressed. No wonder why people think it is one of the best vegan food in Toronto. All dishes Pad Thai, Dan Dan noodles, fish curry and pizza were executed so well.

Graceful Vegetarian Restaurant, located inside Splendid China Mall in Scarborough, serves Chinese…read morevegetarian dishes that (in my opinion) are way better than the ones served in similar Chinese vegetarian restaurants that I had been to elsewhere in the GTA. At Graceful, they actually offer dishes that contain no mock meat, such as straight tofu and bean curd varieties with fresh vegetables (as a non-meat eater, I'm not a big fan of mock meats). The food here seems to be a hit with both vegetarians and non-vegetarians. The restaurant is easily spottable as there are huge signs and entrances from both outside and inside the mall. The interior is not very big - just one big room, but has a cozy and comfortable ambiance with Chinese decorations. There was a table with take-out snack and dessert items right at the entrance, where you can buy packages of cashew nuts, Chinese cookies, and glutinous rice-based snacks / desserts. Service was very friendly, quick, and much better than the service you'd find at most other Chinese restaurants anywhere else. We were presented with 3 menus: dim sum menu (where you mark the items you want to order yourself with a pencil), special dishes menu (with coloured photos), and the main menu (came in a paper booklet). We ordered a combination of dishes from the dim sum and main menus. DIM SUM - Vegetarian Shiu Mai: Loved it! The texture was very smooth and I could see the pieces of vegetables (maybe carrot, radish, water chestnut, mushrooms) in the shiu mai. - Mock BBQ Eel: We ordered this one just out of curiosity. This was my least favourite item out of the ones we ordered. It came out as cubed pieces of deep-fried gluten, covered in sweet sauce and a bit of sesame seeds. Not a fan of deep-fried stuff, and I didn't like the sweet sauce. It had zero resemblance (both visually and taste-wise) to eel (we didn't expect it to be... just wanted to see how this dish would turn out). - Mock Sliced Abalone Sashimi: This was okay, but it could do without the sauce. I liked the firm texture, just like abalone. It was served with a small dollop of wasabi (not needed, in my opinion). MAIN DISHES - Stir-Fried Tofu, Cabbage, Carrot, and Wood Ear Mushrooms: My absolute favourite dish here! We ordered it because I read another Yelp reviewer wrote that this dish was great, non-greasy, and non-oily. They were correct (thank you)! Glad we got this. The tofu was nice and firm with a chewy texture, and I loved all the vegetables that came with this dish. As a big fan of stir-fried cabbage and wood ear mushrooms, this was an easy win. I liked that it wasn't covered in thick sauce and not oily or greasy. - Egg Whites and Mock Crab Meat on Broccoli: Broccoli was a bit on the soft side, but I liked this dish for the combination of fresh vegs and a huge amount of lean protein (egg whites) on top. It was a big dish, and we got to take home some of the egg whites. - Crispy Egg-Free Noodles with Bean Curd Slices and Bitter Melon: This came with too much thick sauce (although I liked the black pepper), but the parts with the still-crispy noodles were good. The protein was actually called "Mock Beef" in the menu, but it was really bean curd slices. I liked the bitter melon the best in this dish, minus the sauce. Overall, this was a great place for Chinese vegetarian food. There was a wide variety of items to choose from, ranging from dim sum (small dishes) to larger main dishes, and all sorts of cooking styles (steamed, stir-fried, deep fried, soup, hot pot, etc.). In the fried rice section of the menu, it was written that they could make all of the fried rice vegan by omitting the eggs (good option for those who want them to be vegan). The 2 stand-outs of this restaurant were the quality and taste of the dishes (especially the ones with tofu / bean curd and actual vegetables), and the service. The gentleman who worked there (perhaps the manager or owner) really cared about his customers and acted like an owner - greeting us, making sure we were taken care of, giving us extra napkins and utensils when asked, explaining each dish that came out, and said goodbye as we were leaving. I plan on coming back to try some of their other dishes on the menu (still lots to choose from!).

Spouse had the mock sharks' fin soup - 10/10. We shared the "Korean style" napa cabbage with several mushrooms and taofu. It was outstanding and thankfully not loaded with cornstarch. 10/10. We splurged on "peanut filled dumplings" which contained minutely-chopped water chestnuts, chopped carrot and mushroom and the lovely crunchy peanuts.
