Scooped out so much excess oil and the crispy peas
Ashley Y.

I had such high expectations because my friends in SF loooove this place so I got excited when we were getting one but... it was just such a disappointment. I got the recommended Sichuan spicy but it was FLOODED with oil. I've ordered spicy before at other chains and have never had this much oil before, where I grabbed a cup and started scooping it out for my health and sanity. It filled half of a standard water cup.... that's just too much. As I walked around to grab all sorts of stuff (napkins, sauce, water etc) I saw people who ordered the same flavor as me eating and it's just straight up oil. Like you don't even see the water, just dipped in oil. Think the spicy soup base at haidilao. It's just not what I would expect from a Malatang place because it's supposed to be "soupy" and drinkable. Not just... oil. Also as a whole it is SOOOO, SOOOO SALTY. Like I made my peace with the oil, scooped some out, tried to keep eating and the ingredients were boiled in ocean water or something. Normally I make a savory dipping sauce but I had to make a new sauce of sesame paste + sugar to counteract the salt. And dipping it in sugary sesame paste did counter some of the salt.... But it's just so miserable. It doesn't even taste good it's just more palatable. Like I knew I didn't like this meal from the first 30 seconds but 10 min in I just gave up. Like look, I don't have to suffer like this. Just took the L and threw it away. I did see that they offered low sodium but usually I don't have to order that? My friends too were like what the hell why is it so salty ??? All 3 of us left our bowls full and unfinished. And they ordered mild spice so you can't even blame it on my soup base. Yintang and YGF have soup bases that are much better like I've never had this problem before. AND CAN WE TALK ABOUT THE FRIED PEAS??? Texture of popcorn kernels (but slightly softer where you can still bite into them).. either way, gross. I don't want these!! Why didn't you ask me if I wanted them!! To be fair, they asked if I had allergies but no mention of oh hey we're just gonna drop 2 scoops of fried kernels into your soup. Other people garnish with green onions or cilantro ... FRIED HARD PEAS?? No thank you. It being priced at $15.99/lb is already higher than their competitors which are $13.99/lb and it is COMPLETELY self-serve everything. Grab your own water, find your own table, pick up your own food when it's ready. As a concept it's fine (think fast food), but there's just so much mess with oil/liquids where it gets really messy really fast. Grab some water and napkins and clean your own table. Pros would just be the varied selection of meats and veggies. I did wish each item had its own tongs if they're not going to give us individual tongs like other places. Sauce bar was missing satay sauce that I normally would add but I guess otherwise it's fine. It's just small. They give our free oranges and a small ice cream cone. I didn't bother though. Too short staffed, didn't want to wait around for someone to get me ice cream. It's tiny anyways. I guess it's been awhile since I've had such a bad meal where there's pretty much no redeeming factor. Like too oily, too salty, more expensive than other places. It just sucks because I know people swear by SF location so what's going on with Arcadia!!

My loaded bowl. Amazing!

Pretty good hot pot experience. Located by Matcha Ren on Nordstrom side of the mall. You start off at the food bar where you wear provided disposable gloves and load your bowl with any meats and vegetables and noodles you'd like for your Hot Pot. Price is by weight (try not to overload it, or pay the price... literally), and then they take it back and cook it for you, and buzz you when it's ready. They have a small self serve sauce bar and some fresh fruits. Self serve water and ice. After you finish, if you bring back your dishes to the cleaning area you get an ice cream cone for dessert for free. Overall the flavors and ingredients were good. Loved the variety of selection. The main con is the price per weight can get tricky, and make it more expensive than some AYCE places. My bowl cost $28 below

Found this new malatang place that replaced EMC at the Santa Anita Mall, so I had to try it out. The selection was decent, and they have heavy metal bowls for you to grab your items with. The bowls were huge, and I'm not really sure why. They also add about 1 lb to the weight, so it made it a bit harder to gauge how much I was actually going to pay. I ended up getting a little under half a pound, while my wife got close to 1.4 lbs. Now for the food, it was good (decent). The meat quality was average, and the beef was slightly chewy. The soup was okay; I got the tomato broth, which had a very light flavor. What I did love was the sauce bar. It's unlimited and had everything you need to make a pretty good sauce. They also had some fruit available, which was a nice touch. Overall, everything was pretty much self-service (I even had to pick up my food when it was done), and while the food was good, there are so many better malatang places in Arcadia. This is probably my least favorite one so far. The price was average at $15.99 per pound, but I still didn't like that the bowl weight was included while you were shopping. They subtract it when you pay, but it made it harder to understand how much I was actually spending.

Checked out Tang Bar at Santa Anita Mall and liked the build-your-own hot pot concept. You grab a bowl, put on some gloves, and walk down the line choosing your ingredients before picking your soup base or dry pot option. They charge by weight at $15.99/lb, which is definitely on the pricier side, but I appreciated the variety of ingredients available. There were plenty of options to customize your bowl and they also offer 7 soup bases and 4 dry pots. I went with the laksa broth and enjoyed it. It had a rich flavor that paired well with everything I picked. Service was quick and friendly, making it a convenient stop if you need something filling while shopping. A nice little bonus was the complimentary ice cream cone at the end of the meal. Overall, a solid option if you're at Santa Anita and craving a customizable hot pot experience.

Returned again and it was as good as before. The chicken broth with less sodium is my go-to. Meats and veggies were fresh. Wagyu beef slice was kind of tough to chew though. Good service and ambiance. It was pretty packed at 6pm on Friday. They still have the free ice cream after you return your dishes.

I'm giving it a two stars because I liked the free ice cream cone at the end . First of all there are not enough tongs to pick up the different types of meat , fish and veggies ... a lot of cross contamination going on and if it wasn't for the fact that everything gets cooked hopefully at high temperatures and kills are the bacteria ....I would have second thoughts about eating here ....also they don't ask you if you have any food allergies until check out ! So if you're allergic to seafood... shell fish ... expect cross contamination. Secondly, they don't clean the table surface after each patron. So we had to grab a table that was filthy Couldn't find anyone to clean it so we took what's called paper thin paper napkins and attempted to clean an oily table .... Still unsanitary because under the light we can still see the smeared oil since we didn't have nothing but paper and water to clean with!!! The fact that you have to table stalk and go grab your own food is weird because you can lose your seat if you're solo and no one is holding your table .... That's such a weird concept .... Keep in mind the food takes about 30 mins to cook.... Do they expect us to stand waiting and then take our tray walk around until someone hopefully leaves ????? So odd.... Third, they messed up our order .... We took someone else's food to our table only to look through the bowl to see we did not grab those particular items .... Again unsafe.... Someone else took our food and when we went back to the counter to ask for our order .... They messed up a few other orders as well..... a lot of I'm sorry , I'm sorry ... I particularly think that if you're running a food establishment that just opened up as a manager you need to double check when the orders are going out ! I'm sorry don't cut it when someone has to get back into line again and restock their bowl and wait again because their order was given to someone else who touched it before returning it !!!! Here is the finishing touch ! Sometimes it doesn't matter if the food is good or not .. it's a combination of their entire experience .... I don't like to stress eat . It was a stressful dinning experience and I will never be eating here again.

Aight don't be like me and assume your to-go malatang containers have the malatang split 50/50. It's not 50/50, it's dry/wet! First time here, got some to-go for lunch and both bowls weighed about the same--I admittedly did not check the sloshiness of each one. I brought one bowl to work for lunch, ripped the sealed plastic lid off, heated it up, went to go eat, and discovered IT'S JUST SOUP! I haven't eaten any of the parts but the soup is pretty good. Ingredients seem fresh and there are spare tongs by the bowls, or use the tongs already at the bar. Cross contamination is inevitable. There's a good selection of meat and veggies and everything in between which is nice. Self-serve sauce bar and some fresh fruit is available as well. There's tons of seating and a private bathroom inside the restaurant. Edit: finally got to the dry part and was pleasantly surprised by the flavor--I got "wagyu" beef, head on shrimp, some fish tofu/balls, vegetables, tofu, mushrooms, potato starch noodles, and enjoyed the quality of everything. This can def replace expensive hotpot most times.

Tang Bar is located in the Santa Anita Mall, near Uncle Tetsu and Matcha Ren. They currently have their Soft Opening from May 19-25, 2026 where they are offering a 15% off all items while they are ramping up. This one of those spots where you grab all of the ingredients and pay for it by the weight - $15.99/lb. This is a smidge more expensive than other similar business concepts in the area. I like that they ask you to put on gloves for sanitary, but you also grab a tong that you take down the whole counter so you can essentially cross contaminate a lot of ingredients. NOT RECOMMENDED FOR PEOPLE WITH ALLERGIES. Worse of all they put the meats in front so if you grabbed meat first, you can touch everything else with your meat infected tongs. If anything, I think the vegetables and things should go first so you don't infect vegetarian ingredients with the meats. Also the meat selection was really fatty. For instance they don't have normal pork slices, it was pork belly. I just took a few slices but it was less protein than I'd normally eat. Otherwise I liked that they had a lot of fish balls, the vegetables looked really vibrant and high quality. I also got some sweet potato noodles to full out my meal. So when they weighed it I was at .91 lbs ($14.55) and I grabbed an herbal drink ($3). You have the option to get the MaLaTang with broth with laksa, just a kick, hot & sour, Szechuan spicy, chicken broth, tomato or mushroom both or you can get it dry and served with a sauce with sweet & spicy, Szechuan pepperson, Szechuan spicy, or sesame sauce. I opted for the tomato broth, but is usually my go-to flavor at these type of restaurants. I got a pager. The food took about 15 minutes to prepare, which isn't a bad weight but it felt longer since there wasn't a good waiting space it and was really crowded. The seats were crowded too, and the restaurant could do a better job cleaning the tables afterwards. When I got my food, I went to the sauce bar and it was a mess. I got sesame, sesame sauce, garlic, and cilantro which I usually get, but it tasted off. I think other sauces got contaminated in there. Once again... those would allergies, BEWARE! As for the bowl, the ingredients were ingredients I like so it's decent but I didn't really like the tomato broth which really affects the whole meal. I like how they have togo containers out if you have leftovers. When you finish your meal, they have an area where you return the tray. And you are able to redeem a vanilla ice cream cone for returning your try. It's a nice gesture, okay ice cream. Staff seemed too staff and overwhelmed I ended up waiting forever for that ice cream, and it was okay, not something I would buy, but I guess it's okay cause it's free. The energy here is really stressful and chaotic from both the staff and the customers. I hope it gets better once they settle into the business. I might come back if it's convenient and I'm already at the mall and don't feel like eating anything else, but I wouldn't go out of my way to come here.

Mushroom and Just a Kick broth

Came during their soft opening and everything was very clean and organized. I had the Just a Kick broth and thought it would be just a spicy soup, turns out it was Mala with numbing spice. Not the best choice to have with the hot temperature in the dining area. However, they did have plenty of good options and I would be back to try a different broth. Only thing I'd say they was missing, would be the usual barbecue hot pot sauce. Other than that, it's nice having another dining option in the mall. Nothing really special from other Malatang restaurants, but convenient if you're already at the mall. * $15.99/lb, they weigh it with the bowl at first so the weight will show heavier. They do subtract the weight in the total on the register.

Haven't heard of Tang Bar before but it is one of those self serve hotpot places where you grab the ingredients you want and you pay per pound. I came with friends for their soft opening where they had 15% off. It was busy when we came but luckily there was still seats. The entrance is right at the beginning of the bar where you grab your ingredients. They start with meats then veggies and then the noodles/carbs. You move down the bar in a line until you reach the cashier at the end. It is a bit different than other places where you don't walk around with your bowl to grab the ingredients. They only had 1 cashier so it was a bit slow but it wasn't too bad. I liked how many meat and seafood options they had. The veggies didn't look super fresh though. And they didn't give a tong per person but there is a shared tong per section in the bar, which isn't as convenient when you're grabbing things. They have broth and sauce options and I decided to try their Chicken broth. You can get it less sodium so that is what I did. After paying, you get a buzzer and then get seated yourself. They are nice and have a water machine to grab water yourself. Their sauce station is a bit small but it has all the basic hotpot sauces. The food took around 10 minutes. My buzzer didn't buzz though because of some issue in the kitchen so the employee walked around looking for the order number. When they found me, they brought mine over for me which was nice. The chicken broth was pretty good and it still had plenty of taste even with less sodium. All the ingredients I got tasted good together. However, the beef I got wasn't super good quality and bit tough to chew. I even got the wagyu beef one but it didn't taste like it was wagyu. Maybe that batch was not that good? Not sure. At the end, they also give you free ice cream cone if you return your dishes yourself. Overall, this is a nice addition to the food options here at the mall. I would recommend it if you want hotpot while you are here. They have plenty of options and prices are typical based on how much you grab.

I like their dry sauce! Way better than ygf's but the second time I came I tried szechuan broth and it was ok. Imo better than big way hotpot but still lacking to ygf's broth. As for the meat selections, they got A LOT and the vegetables look pretty fresh to me not limpy and very green :) I also like their free ice cream at the end, the cone is def not the wafer kind so it's a bit better (for me at least). The ice cream flavor is different on each day and u dont get to choose bc they only have 1 specific flavor per day. They also provide to go container that u can take by yourself if u dont finish. One worker noticed i was just carrying my to go container in my arm and he offered a plastic bag without me asking so that was very thoughtful :) One downside is that once u walk past certain section of food, its hard to go back because you walk in a narrow aisle. And i also dont like the shared tongs bc people mix them around and the handle fall into the food, feels pretty unhygienic to me (gloves are provided but not enforced) but whatever since they'll boil my food anyways. Overall, this is a pretty solid restaurant I will def come again.

Diana L.

While we appreciated the many options provided on the protein and veggie, we noticed that the temperature on the fridge was at 45 degrees on a pretty hot day. The wait for the food was a tad bit longer than other malatang places we've been to. The broth was unfortunately underwhelming. The space is spacious though and half enclosed so it could be dog friendly. $15.99/lb.

The long anticipated Tang Bar has opened inside the Santa Anita Mall in Arcadia (right next to Din Tai Fung). The hype is real! We came on the Monday of their soft opening and there was a line of 25 people! It's a self service restaurant. Step 1: select your food items from the tang bar Step 2: choose your flavor / broth Enjoy! We between the two of us, we spent about $67 for the two bowls. We def got too much food!

I really wish they would bring it back because it was one of the restaurant's signature dishes and a favorite among many customers. During this visit, I ordered the sliced pork and the jelly noodles. The sliced pork was incredibly tender, with a clean, fresh flavor that let the ingredients' quality shine. The jelly noodles were refreshing, spicy, and full of bold Sichuan flavors. The combination of heat, seasoning, and texture was simply delicious. The dessert was also surprisingly good. It reminded me of mochi, topped with puffed rice that added a pleasant crunch and contrast to the soft, chewy texture. If you're looking for authentic Sichuan food in Los Angeles, I highly recommend Sichuan Impression. For the first three dishes, we clarified with the owner to make this vegetarian (also vegan), which she was able to do very easily and without question. We communicated with her in Chinese, but she also spoke English to us, when we discovered that our Chinese was likely not as fluent as native speakers. Everything was flavorful, without relying on just an overwhelming amount of salt, and we really enjoyed the green beans that seemed to be cooked in fermented bean paste. I found the eggplants particularly tasty too! The service: This small store had so much business, so we did spend some time waiting before we could actually order our meal. The restaurant itself was filled with folks dining in, and there were multiple parties waiting for take out. Even so, once we did order our meal, it didn't take too long for all four dishes to come out. For these reasons, I can't say service was particularly attentive, but they were still polite and I felt like they did try to make it a good experience for us, even if it was so busy.
