I haven't been here in a while. It's 1:00 pm and it's bustling here. I had the vermicelli with charbroiled pork and egg rolls and my hubby had the pho with rare steak. My dish was loaded with delicious pork and the equivalent of two egg rolls cut into bite sized chunks. The dish includes onions, bean sprouts, iceberg lettuce, crushed peanuts, and of course the vermicelli noodles. Everything was delicious. I tasted the broth from my hubby's pho. I'd heard so much about this place, and it's in a neighborhood with a high bar for quality Asian food. It was also very busy, and we were lucky to get the last table right away. The service was great. The decor is no nonsense, which is fine for an authentic experience. I will say it's refreshing to see Vietnamese iced coffee done the right way. But I always use bun as a measure of a Vietnamese place and it was a disappointment. Way too many vermicelli noodles, way too little vegetables -- no julienned cucumber, no shredded carrot, and a smidge of lettuce -- and the vermicelli was not the correct rice noodle. We came by around 8 and they stop taking dine in at 7 so we had to order out. The restaurant itself is pretty small and looks very authentic. I got the Vermicelli Noodles with curry and vegetables. I wanted to come here because their Google ratings were really high, and it did not disappoint. We had to wait a little bit after 1 PM on a Tuesday but they were very nice and worked quickly to get us a table. The pho broth is delicious and pretty unique and tastes very light, natural, and aromatic compared to other pho I've had. The large bowl is really big and they give a lot of meat and noodles, and the price is great. However, I wish they gave more fresh ingredients (mint, bean sprouts). They only gave us (2 people) one plate which honestly looks like it's for one person. I also don't recommend getting the "bowl of meatballs" for $3.50. I expected a good amount for that price but it was just a bowl of soup with 6 pieces of quarter-cut meatballs so literally 1.5 meatballs. The darling hubby and I, along with the rest of our fair ATX, have had a traumatic go of it this week with this epically-horrid #TREEPOCALYPSE2023, so, after four days of a zillion hours of heartbreakingly chainsawing and clearing ancient trees and shivering in our homes at night for lack of power, we needed a quick respite posthaste! I took to Yelp, natch, and we found Tan My! And I'm VERY sure that this has probably been said before, so please forgive me for the inevitable cliche, but OH, My! This was everything that we needed in our very souls! The place was packed, and for good dang reason! One of the top pho spots in Austin in my opinion. Not the best I've ever had, but amazing for Austin. Tan my is small, but they do a good job of rearranging guests and tables to fit everyone one. We came on a Saturday afternoon and it was moderately full. Service is pretty quick too. I ordered the small #1 and felt that the portion size was huge! The Bun Bo Hue broth is amazing. Not watered down, it comes with most of the authentic fixings like the pork feet and blood no cha or banana blossoms though. I will over look these details as their broth is amazing. I am Viet this is my all time favorite food. I used to live down the street from the "best" Bun Bo Hue place in Orange County/ Little Saigon and that places broth was many times inconsistent and cash only with mediocre service. I've also had this in Hue, Vietnam at some of the OG authentic spots. If Tan My can deliver on consistency this may be the best bun Bo place besides my moms kitchen. (At least that I've had in Austin and Orange County) I could tell this place is a labor love. My manager recommended this place to me because his Vietnamese childhood friend took him here regularly while they were growing up. Amy took our order and her brother delivered the food to us when it was ready. I didn't really read the reviews too much because I was craving bun bo and a taste of home. She said they had been there for over 25 years and she had taken over the restaurant from her parents. The do dine in only for lunch time and are closed on Sunday's. These are very important things that I did not read prior to just waltzing in starving at 7PM. This is a family restaurant that really shines in the quality of food. Is it unfortunate they don't do dine in after 3PM...a little. They do make up for it by packing your Bun in a microwave safe container. (Soup is still packaged separately to keep your noodles from getting soggy). I will be back and I hope it is as amazing next time as it was this time. I ordered the pho tai chin (pho with sliced rare beef steak and well-done brisket) to-go. It came with plenty of mung bean sprouts, Thai basil leaves, jalapeño slices, hoisin sauce, and a lime wedge in a bag. The basil leaves had some brown spots, so I didn't use them all. Overall, the pho was okay, but I wasn't blown away by the broth. I first tried to place the order online through Yelp but the order didn't go through, so I called to place my order and they had it ready in 20 minutes. They didn't ask what size I wanted (and the online ordering system didn't have size options either), so I'm assuming they only offer one size. I wish they had a smaller size option, because this was way too much food for me. On the bright side, they definitely don't skimp on the portions. The next time I'm craving beef pho, I'll probably go to Pho Van, but I'd come back to Tan My to try something else on their menu. read more

After hearing a couple recommendations on this Vietnamese place, my friend and I came during a rainy day and it did not disappoint. It seems to be a family-run restaurant, pretty low-key vibes. The highlight was the spring egg rolls being the perfect delicious crunch, as well as the green thai tea which I've never had before- my friend was super excited to order this so I ordered one too- so good! The taste reminds me of a mix between the orange thai tea more commonly offered in other places, with matcha. To Go: Ordering to go by phone was about a 20 minute wait. It's packaged well for to go. Make sure to keep everything upright because while the broth is separately bagged, the container it is in has a tiny hole to release steam at the top. Logistics: The restaurant isn't large so finding seating can be tough, so may be best for to-go. It was actually completely full when I went at noon on a weekday. My go-to for some of the best Bun (vermicelli) and Pho around. Service is fast and friendly, prices are reasonable, and the place is always packed with happy lunchers (they close at 3 pm these days). My #40 Bun (with grilled pork and egg rolls) is always excellent. The marinade on the pork is a bit sweet, but after the first bite or two, I am all in. They are generous with the egg roll, usually giving two small ones, and the noodles and veg are always just right. My lunch companion today said his order of Chicken Pho #19 was a mixed bag. The broth, he said, was possibly the best he'd ever had. But the chicken in his soup looked like it had been sliced off some ghastly chicken loaf, and he said that ruined it for him. He'd hoped for some nice shredded real chicken. He finished the broth and left the rest. He's not one to complain (unlike me), so when employees came by twice to ask if everything was okay, they only heard my praise. Full disclosure I only had the Bun Bo Hue but it was authentic and delicious! It had every thing that it was supposed to and didn't skimp out on anything. Still can't compare to homemade but it'll do when you're craving a bowl of pho! My family got: vermicelli grilled pork with egg roll, fried rice, broken rice dish, tofu with flat noodles, beef and broccoli with flat noodles. Tofu tasted off and sour, as if it was old. If you ask me which Vietnamese restaurant in Austin I would suggest, my next question would be, "for what dish specifically?" because if you're wanting some bun bo hue then look no further because it was ON POINT here! Great flavor, portion-size, and value for what you pay. Paired this with some cha gio which was good as well. The com ga thit nuong? It was good! However, given how great the previous dish was, I desired more here primarily because I was hoping for more of a charcoal, grilled flavor from the meat and didn't get that. Additionally, I would have liked the opportunity to order broken rice (com tam) instead of the regular white rice I got. If you're craving Vietnamese food, this is the place to go! They don't have a website, but you can order for pickup or delivery through Uber Eats. If you're picking up an order, you can skip the line outside and go to the counter inside. I went on Saturday for the Dine with Maui fundraiser, and the staff was super friendly despite being busy! I ordered: - Hu Tieu Xao Don Thap Cam (6/5): Delicious!! This was my first time trying this dish, and I absolutely will get it again. It's a stir fry with veggies, beef, chicken, shrimp, and crispy rice noodle squares in a garlic sauce. I wasn't sure what to expect for the rice noodle squares, but they're basically a bunch of rice noodle squares stacked together and fried. They're crispy on the outside, slightly chewy in the middle, and the undisputed star of this dish. The garlic sauce is perfectly savory and just a little sweet. If you've never had this before, you need to try it! - Mi Thap Cam (5/5): This is an egg noodle soup with pork, shrimp, squid, and fish cakes. Normally, when I order a noodle soup, the best part of the dish for me is the meat. However, the broth in this dish is addicting! I didn't even need the toppings, I could've just drank the broth by itself. It was flavorful yet light, and enhanced the flavor of the meats. That being said, the portion of meat in this dish was super generous, and I especially enjoyed that crispy fried piece of shrimp on top of the soup. This is a great alternative if you want a noodle soup but don't feel like having pho! - Cha Gio (4/5): These egg rolls were pretty good! The filling was a lot more meaty than I'm used to, but I still really enjoyed them. I'm not sure if they were busier than usual when I went, but the little parking lot in front of the restaurant was completely full. A lot of people were parked on the side street by the neighborhood behind the restaurant. This is definitely the best Viet food I've had in Austin so far! read more

My only (and super minor) complaint is my cha gio were overdone so i don't think i got to experience what they really taste like.
