I'm living 1 block from this restaurant and I couldn't be more grateful that I do. It is my go to place when I don't know what to eat. The staffs there are all very nice, and the food is authentic Taiwanese enough. I was craving Taiwanese food, came here, and enjoyed my meal. The pork ears could be more tender, but had good flavor. The pork hock was also good, but could also be more tender. The sausage fried rice was also good too. My favorite is the three-cup pork blood cake, very fragrant, soft in the inside, and crispy on the outside. The papaya milk drink is also good on certain days. I would definitely come here again when I'm feeling Taiwanese =) read more

I came here with the Girlfriend for a quick bite to eat. Once i walked in the decor was really cute. Plus the staff was pretty nice. We both were on a tight budget so we got the lunch special for about $7. Which comes with hot and sour soup, a house cucumber salad, rice, and your choice of the items given to chose from. My girlfriend ordered the sweet and sour chicken , while i ordered the mongolian beef. I wantes to try out some of their appitizers but our waitress recomended we shouldnt because we would be getting a lot of food. So no appitizer :\ I am always a fan with hot and sour soup but my girly didnt like it. Not even the cucumber salad. But hey, more for me :) Our food came out fast and hot. I have been here a couple of times through out the years (after it reopened again at its current location) and in the most recent visit, I ordered the shredded pork fried rice and the ground pork rice. The ground pork was actually kind of cold and so was the egg that came with it and pretty much the only thing that was warm was the rice. It was disappointing when the only thing that seemed like it just cooked was the rice. Also, with the fried rice, there really isn't much of anything else besides some shredded pork, green onions, scrambled egg and dried fried garlic pieces. There was way too much egg and dried garlic in there and the garlic flavor kind of just ruined it because it just made that dish very garlic-y when I ate it. Probably wouldn't come back here again after this. Its just not worth it to me and there is nothing that makes me want to come back anymore. And although they accept credit, there is a $25 minimum charge. read more

We went on Friday night and found a busy and noisy restaurant with a large crowd in the waiting area, I almost left. I'm glad I didn't! We were seated very quickly. We ordered the combination chow mien, black bean chicken and their Kung pao chicken. The chow mien noodles were fresh and hot with a light sauce. Both the chicken plates were equally fresh and hot and had sliced garlic in the sauce. The food was not greasy at all. Ok, I'm bias because I love red bean shaved ice and I can't find it at that many places. So when I found this café, I was in love. The decorations are adorable, it feels very costumey like you're in a museum but its fun. The pork hock was ok, the seared chicken rolls are yum, the dried shrimp fried rice is great. There's nothing like meeting up with a friend to brainstorm for business ideas at a cool cafe that doesn't rush you out. Not my typical Sat, but a really inspiring one. This place had the feel of a traditional tea house with the wooden benches. The food we ordered was also really good and came quickly. We had the a sticky rice dish, a shrimp with chives, and a beef noodle dish. Really yummy with a lot of great flavors hitting my taste palate. These are not typical dishes I've had but really good. We end the meal with a combination red bean and taro jelly ice shaving dessert. A great ending on a warm day! read more

We used to frequent this place quite a bit. Recently we haven't been going as much for the following reasons: 1. Not sure if the chef is now different, but several of their dishes taste different (oyster pancake, mi gao, pop corn chicken, fen guo bing) 2. The portion size has shrunk drastically (about 30-40% shrinkage). This started happening about 6 weeks ago. I much rather see price increase if they're going to up their bottom-line. It's really not cool to still feel hungry right after eating a meal. 3. The restaurant is getting more & more crowded and for the 2 reasons above, we don't feel it's worth the wait. Wan ruan pork hock rice is good, but nothing to write home about. But the bamboo shoot that comes with the rice is tasty. The ground pork (rou zhao) noodle soup is really bland. Skip their eggplant dish too - doesn't taste authentic at all. Fen guo bing used to taste authentic, but for several months now, their fen guo has changed from the mustard yellow color one should come to expect to this soil brown color and the texture went from chewy to this floppy sticky mess that's hard to break apart and doesn't taste like anything. read more

My expectation of good Taiwanese food in the Bay Area isn't very high, which probably explains why I gave it a 4-star. I liked the selection here, and the food itself was just ok. The good thing is that all the dishes weren't very salty, and the dessert was a treat. We ordered the intestine and blood in a hot pot, and it was burned by the time we ate it. Could be my own fault for not stirring it as soon as it arrived, but at least we should have gotten some warning? I would come back here for some more port knuckles and maybe shaved ice. read more

This place is legit. The star plate Wan Luan Pig Hock was tender, the dipping sauce was tasty - bit pricy but I guess the cooking process was complex and the spices were the secret sauce. We ordered: Oyster egg omelette; minced pork stew over rice; pig ears; pork pottage (rou geng tang); A-cai (lettuce-like texture Taiwanese vegetable) sauteed with garlic and a kong-pao shrimp for hubby. Everything was authentic and with generous portion. 3 of us couldn't finish and had to pack up majority of the food. I was craving pai gu fan (pork chop rice) and decided to give this place a try during lunch. Unfortunately this is one of the most mediocre pork chop rices I've ever had. The good - egg was marinated and flavorful. The bad - pork chop was simply a grilled pork chop. Imagine BBQ chicken you'd grill at home. Same taste. So while it's not bad, it's more of a taste you expect from a Hawaiian BBQ plate, so that's a fail imo. I came here for pai gu fan, not a BBQ rice plate. read more

The reviews by others are pretty accurate. The portions are small and the service was soso but the worst part was the quality of the food. I've had much better taiwanese food elsewhere. I don't know how an Asian restaurant would mess up on rice but the rice was kinda hard... something you would expect if you reheated rice kept in the fridge. Very smooth, tender and almost slip through your teeth and down your throat,that's my take of Taiwan food so far. The flavor is mostly mild and on the sweet side. The texture had layers of varieties. It's the Chinese version of comfort food. I liked the pig hock, the chicken roll and the shaved ice. Not so much about the ping dong meat ball because the skin was too chewy for me. I went with my bro for lunch and had oyster omelette, basil chicken, and ground pork over rice. The oyster omelette is the worst that I ever had. It was fried more than it should be. The basil chicken is so different from what I usually eat in other Taiwanese restaurant. It doesn't even taste like basil chicken and it is just too sweet with weird aroma. However, the service is pretty good in which I give this a two stars. I heard that the catering service from this restaurant tastes better but I have never try it before read more

Went there for Mango shave ice after a sushi lunch. While the ice is no comparison to the real thing in Taiwan, it turned out to be better than I had expected, especially with the delicious brown sugar syrup in it. Besides, I really don't know any other place in bay area that serves Mango shave ice anyway. Service was a different story. The service staff were there simply performing the very basic table-waiting tasks and did it with an arrogant attitude. The only smile I got whle there was from an apparent kitchen staff of definitely-not-asian ethnicity when she brought the food to our table. Judging from the fact that most people think this place serves decent food, I will still visit for the sake of that. However, I will definitely not be afraid to tip according to the level of service I receive. read more
