We had been to the Taco Chelo in Tempe, and really liked it, so we really wanted to give the original location a try. The aesthetic here is quite different and not quite as pretty as the Tempe location (which I think is super cool), but still nice. There is a bar in one side when you walk in, then you stand in line to order at the other side of the bar. When we got there the line was long, but if moved quick. The menu has a lot of good choices, and we tried something a little different, in addition to carne asada and barbacoa tacos--the crispy tacos and the flamingo. Hubby said his carne asada tacos were cold, and wasn't thrilled with them, BUT son and I LOVED what we ordered. The crispy tacos are filled with minced shrimp--a lot of it. It is so stinking delicious!! The flamingo was huge, and it's basically cheese with green chili in either a fried tortilla or batter--not sure which, but boy, is it delish!
I went here based on social media recommendations. I regret eating here and listening to those people. I wanted to really like this restaurant. I wanted some delicious tacos as I was craving them. The ambiance is cute and charming. It has a chill and laid back vibe. I love the colors and eclectic feel. I loved the artwork inside and the patio decor too. The service was decent. My food came out pretty quickly. I placed a to go order. I chose the carne asada on flour and the crispy shrimp tacos. The steak on flour wasn't bad. The meat was a little chewy and under seasoned. The crispy shrimp tacos were overcooked. The shell was a bit too hard. I was talking to one of the regulars and he said the margaritas and chips are the best things on the menu. He suggested no tacos. I tried them anyway based on a couple of influencers. I definitely would go back for a margarita. They looked amazing and everyone was drinking them. The tacos are a NO. I will say the side of guacamole was delicious. So overall this wasn't the best experience, but it was definitely a new one.
I was in Phoenix for a business trip and stopped by here for lunch. And if you don't want to read the rest of my review, just know this: they have amazing food! I believe the only option for parking is to find street parking. I don't think they have a parking lot, unless I missed it. I tried their Costra taco, which is a beef taco with caramelized cheese, and it was amazing! I also tried the chicken taco, which was good. For a drink, I had their Strawberry-Lemonade Agua Fresca, and it was really good as well. Desserts don't count while you're on a business trip, right? So, I ended up ordering the Tres Leches de Coco, and it was absolutely amazing. It wasn't overly sweet at all and felt surprisingly light. The only thing I didn't like about this place was the restroom situation. You have to grab a key from the restaurant and walk outside to a restroom a few restaurants over. The restroom itself also had a few broken items, some light graffiti here and there, etc., which took away from the overall experience a little. Overall, I'd highly recommend the Costra taco and Tres Leches de Coco!
Absolutely the best happy hour menu in town ! We had one of everything and all items were 10/10. Ceviche was well seasoned and fresh. Horchata was perfectly sweet, crispy hot tacos and flavorful salsas. Highly recommend checking this place out !
I went to two taco spots during my trip to Scottsdale and Phoenix. Taco Chelo was definitely my favorite of the two. After taking a very short-lived walk through Roosevelt Row (it was HOT outside), I needed food and refreshment. I stopped into Taco Chelo and grabbed a seat at the bar. Lucky me, it was also happy hour. I ordered a frozen peach margarita and a variety of tacos. The star of the show for me was their fish tacos. Amazing! Even better, you could see the tortillas being freshly made. I don't know about you, but to me, the fresher the tortilla, the better the food tastes. My bartender was attentive and although the margaritas were frozen, they still snuck up on me. Taco Chelo is a very casual spot. A lot of people were enjoying watching sports at the bar. When in Phoenix again, I'd definitely return.
An expensive taco place with $5 tacos with little seating inside (self serve) and counter style ordering. There is extra seating outside and the food is brought to you as well as taken away. I tried the crispy shrimp taco, fish taco, gobernador, costra taco, and the Sonoran taco. The shrimp, fish, and gobernador tacos are bland in different ways. The fish is just straight up bland with a lot of pickled red onions but not a lot of other flavors to help the fish stand out. Not sure if they went light on the crema but it needed something else. The shrimp taco's guajillo salsa overpowers the shrimp and I wasn't a huge fan of the flavor. The gobernador has a soy sauce salsa on the taco which sounded interesting but tasted just like soy sauce and grilled fish which I wasn't a fan of. The costra taco needed some kind of salsa to cut the greasiness from the cheese as there is only cheese, onion, and meat on there. The Sonoran taco was pretty good but a bit too salty. As a side note, the water they have is absolutely awful. It tastes so bad I spit it out and didn't drink any of it. It is truly some of the most horrendous water I've ever had the displeasure of tasting. I hesitate to call it potable. It must be a war crime to serve water this bad even to prisoners. The spot seems to have nice vibes but I wouldn't come back for the food especially looking at the price.
Some of the best Mexican food I've had!! Really enjoyed everything we tried, all of the tacos were good, and so were the fried pork skins. I loved their horchata, and their strawberry horchata was so unique and delish! It's a cute spot too, and staff was very friendly!
This place is the best for taco Tuesdays. All day happy hour makes this spot super affordable and the tacos are incredible. They just got added on InKind as well so you can use your rewards here! Paid parking is limited out front so recommend walking from E Portland St.
A friend and I came here to catch up and we enjoyed the affordable aspect of this place as well as the vibe! Since this establishment offered various types of tacos, we tried a bit of different kinds and overall enjoyed the differences in taste and texture. Specifically, I thought the sonoran taco was very innovative as it involved two kinds of salsa to provide a color juxtaposition, which also offered the carne asada different experiences in flavor. I also enjoyed the costra taco which was made with caramelized cheese over it, offering a pleasant fried flavor on the tortilla itself. The barbacoa taco was very juicy since the beef was very well-made. In contrast, the carne asada taco was a bit dry for some reason, and relied on the avocado salsa for both taste and juiciness. The fish taco didn't have enough fish, and had a lot of batter around the fish along with excessive pickled onion pieces. Since this spot is located in a very nice area, the arts district, I would recommend it to anyone that's around the area. It'd be a nice lunch after visiting the Phoenix Art Museum, which is only a mile away from here!
So good! Awesome happy hour you can't beat. Service is fast! Love coming here before a concert or sports game or before bar hopping around Roosevelt row. The food is great and I always try to get something new each time
Really cool spot in the Ro Ro district! Stopped in today with a buddy and it was a great experience! We came in when happy hour was happening and good thing we snagged a table at 5:30pm, because shortly after, the place was full. I wasnt very hungry as I just had a snack with another friend so only got some chips, salsa, guacamole and also a michelada (they use Tecate light for the beer). The place is pretty busy and trendy and lot of people in here. Was a bit loud as I was literally shouting to my friend. Salsas were good, michelada was good and my friend said his quesadilla with beef was very good. Overall, a great place to chill and hang out on a Friday evening! I'd definitely come back!
I will forever come here every time I make to Phoenix/Scottsdale. Taco shells are made in house and make the tacos elite. They make my tacos just how I ask every time I come, and I make changes! Most recently was last night after a rough rental car situation (avoid NU check those reviews eek) and the bartender was awesome. Quick service, friendly and took my order perfectly. Strawberry lemonade is my absolute favorite and if you know me I'm a lemonade girl. Tacos are perfect, the meat has virtually no weird fat on them like most tacos do. Both carne and chicken. Delicious. I'm here for five days this trip and I'm going back for sure, may end up at the Tempe location too. I should mention the great atmosphere and getting I got, a "welcome in" from the ladies behind the counter as well as the bartender I wish I got his name. Thank you for making my night :)
This place is so good! I was looking for awesome tacos, and I'm so glad I stopped here. They have an outdoor patio and plenty of seating inside- tables and at the bar. This is a casual spot where you order at the counter and they'll bring the food out to you. They also open at 11:00 and by 11:10 every table was taken. So I'd recommend stopping in when they open or waiting. I ordered the fish tacos, and they were the best tacos I've had. They had huge pieces of fish, cabbage, salad, and more. I could barely hold them. I should've used a fork, but I made it work. I highly recommend stopping here for great tacos!

A friend brought us here and it was a hit! I loved the horchata, some of the best I've had. I'd come back for that alone. The food was delicious, flavorful. I enjoyed the tacos, and the guac / pork rinds was delicious as well (the lil squeezed on top makes it!). read more

We came across this spot while strolling around downtown PHX. It had a steady stream of customers and felt lively and fun. The prices were reasonable, and the staff was friendly and helpful. The restroom is shared with neighboring restaurants, so you'll need to ask for a key. Thankfully, there's a handwashing station right outside if you just need to wash your hands. Review on the food: Chicharrones - Just okay. The guac was made with real avocado but lacked flavor. Chicken & Barbacoa Tacos - My friends really enjoyed them. Crispy Taco - Super messy but pretty good. Carne Asada Quesadillas - Tasty. I liked it. Horchata - DELICIOUS! I really want to try their other house-made agua frescas and margaritas next time. Desserts- I think it was a tres leches with coconut - yummy, not too sweet. Overall, we had a great time hanging out in their outdoor patio. Good food, great vibes. Had a friend recommend we check this spot out for an all day happy hour on Tuesday and we were so glad we did! We sat right at the bar and everyone was very friendly. I had a regular margarita and it was the perfect refreshing drink after a long day. We also tried each of the tacos on happy hour. The chicken was my favorite but I loved the crispy shrimp too. Ambiance is cool and casual plus they have a patio. Will definitely be back! read more

The environment is really fun and lively. Louder music with an energetic vibe. Unfortunately they only have pastor tacos on Wednesdays which are amazing! Their margaritas are definitely worth it and have a good amount of booze so you'll only need one to two. We went before the baseball game. It was fairly crowded so if you want a table you have to get there and kind of wait for one to become available which I don't love but I get it because their food is so good. I just wish they did service instead of going to the counter to order because waiting in line makes it much more crowded. There are only 7 tables inside with one being a good size for a group of 5 or more. Their veggie taco is my favorite so if you like sweet potatoes give it a try. Next time I'm there I want to try the ceviche. Kinda pricey for the portions but the flavor is there for sure. read more

Hunted for some tacos and found some tacos. This is a pay first and eat next kind of establishment where it was super casual with water canteen for you to get your own water as well as plastic utensils. The weather was nice enough to enjoy seating outside in the patio area. Selections chosen: -Chips, salsa, and guacamole appetizer to start -shrimp ceviche- mexican wild shrimp, cucumber, cilantro, tomato, avocado with chips. Nice starter. -Fish tacos- beer battered fish, morita crema, cabbage, pickled onion, and pico de gallo. I enjoyed this taco. -Chicken - adobo style with avocado, sour cream and pico de gallo. -Carnitas (pork)- with onion and cilantro -Carne asada (beef) - avocado salsa, onion, cilantro -crispy tacos (with minced shrimp inside and then topped with tomato salsa, pickled onion, avocado and cabbage). I loved the first crispy taco. And then when I had my 2nd crispy taco where it was not enjoyable anymore. I only was able to eat 1/3 of this until I had the most spiciest pepper seed in my mouth that ruined the rest of the experience and had to load with 3 cups of water with watery eyes and burning mouth. I wasn't hungry anymore. A nice way to curb an appetite. -strawberry horchata- yummy - tres leches de coco - something was lacking as it wasn't as tasty as if it was missing an ingredient. I would like to come back to try the crispy tacos but will need to make sure it doesn't have the spiciest seed as I don't believe there was an indication for something super spicy. read more

Since it was "officially" National Taco Day, as well as Taco Tuesday, the hubby and I wanted to try out a new taco spot. So.... we decided on Taco Chelo on Roosevelt Row. As soon as we walked in, we loved the vibe and atmosphere! Super chill and relaxing. They offer a walk-up style, seat yourself ordering process. The restaurant isn't super big, but they do offer indoor and outdoor seating as well as a small bar. We decided on a variety of tacos and the chips, salsa, and guacamole. We really enjoyed everything we tried! The food was tasty and the drinks were the perfect way to end our day! We will definitely be back!! Bonus - it was also HH so we even saved some $$$! read more
I enjoyed Taco Chelo. This review is really a 3.5. There are several taco spots in the area, and this spot was close to my Airbnb, so I decided to try. It was good. My order was wrong as I asked for no cream or cheese, but overall, it was good. I did like the salad with the pumpkin seeds so much so that I came back for the same salad the next day. The salad is a bit overpriced for the amount of food you receive, maybe it's just a small to go portion, but it was different and good enough. Might be worth checking out if you're in the area. read more

I though it was good but I wasn't wowed. I was alone having a few beers and wanted some tacos: a classic Phoenix night. I sat at the bar hoping for efficiency but didn't t really get it. I was one of two patrons and had to gently remind them that I had indeed ordered some food. I like the patio area and it's a great location so a little jump will go a long way. Tacos weren't bad but a bit cold and not enough wow factor. It's in my walking path so I'll likely try again. read more

Went here on a Saturday night with friends. It was only my second visit here. It did not disappoint. I ordered the chicharonnes, carne asada taco, and Taco Gobernador. Everything was SO GOOD but that Taco Gobernador was the star! My friend got ceviche which I tried and it was good. My other friend got tacos, I don't remember which ones though. They tried my Taco Gobernador and we have all been talking and thinking about it since we left. I will be back to order a bunch of them soon. It packed and loud but the vibes were great. The bartender was personable and sweet. We got to watch him make and/or pour batches of horchata which is amazing! The salsa was also great too. read more

We had a good time here. The patio set up was perfect to hang w sum good tacos and a beer. The order process is easy and they were courteous and helpful with the menu. The tacos were tasty and the beer was crisp and refreshing. I would def swing by again if I'm in the area. read more
The only reason this place doesn't get a 1/5 I've whew the chorizo torta was INCREDIBLE. The avocado was so fresh, the cheese melted to perfection, the chorizo so flavorful, and the bread perfectly crispy yet soft at the same time. The carne asada tacos were rubbery and bland, the chips hard as rocks, and the barbacoa completely flavorless and so greasy, emily and fatty. I have to say, the difference in the torta vs everything else was shocking. I'd definitely go back for that torta time and time again! read more

I tried this place once for takeout and thought the tacos were good enough to eat again. Unfortunately, my 2nd visit completely changed my mind. I stopped in today, I was told that the Crispy Tacos (minced shrimp) include bacon -- which is **not listed anywhere on the menu**. That's incredibly misleading. I don't eat meat, and including pork as an unlisted ingredient is a huge issue. This isn't a minor detail; it's a serious oversight. Not listing bacon in a dish is unacceptable, especially when dietary restrictions are common and easily avoided with transparency. Because of this, I'll never eat here again. read more

Not only was the staff super welcoming but the food was amazing! I got a spicy marg and my boyfriend got a michelada and if we weren't driving I could've had 10 more! We got the ceviche to start followed by fish tacos, costra tacos, carnitas taco and a carne asada. We ate them so fast I didn't really get any good pictures. Can't wait to come back next time I visit 10/10! read more
This place is so wildly overrated and I would not recommend visiting. Let me start by saying the customer service is good, all the staff was nice. And it's also very well decorated inside. It's the food that's the issue. We ordered the fish tacos, chicken tacos, and guacamole. The guacamole is SO small for the price. Not to mention it is extremely bland. It tastes like avocado with a teaspoon of lime juice, don't waste your time ordering. Now the fish taco, flavor wise was good in comparison to the other tacos, but why lord is most of the fried fish just soggy batter???? A rip off in my opinion. And the chicken taco was so negligible. The only thing at the table that people enjoyed was the kid quesadilla with no meat. Do yourself a favor and walk down to taco boys for some real tacos. read more

This was my first visit here. I didn't realize that you ordered at the front of the restaurant. I was expecting a waiter. The people at the register were very nice and helpful with recommending items. I got chips and guacamole, which came with two salsa as well. Thechuos and salsa were tasty and chips were nice and crispy. The guacamole and both salsa tasted very good. One had a smoky flavor that I enjoyed. I had a prickly pear margarita which was very good. I had the crispy shrimp tacos. They were delicious. I loved the toppings that came along with it. It also came with a seafood broth to dip or pour over the tacos. It wss very flavorful. The staff checked on us a few times, amd they kept the place very clean. I love that there is indoor and outdoor seating as well as bar seating. The prices were great! read more

Beautiful restaurant, so clean, exceptional staff service, and the food is amazing. I did a sampling of five different tacos and a cheese enchilada today. This is my 10th or 12th time eating at this location and I kept forgetting to do a review, I was not about to forget today because it is worth the five stars. if I could pick two restaurants a year to give 10 stars too, this location would get one of my10 stars. read more
Got takeout and overall everything was delicious. The fish taco was crispy and fresh though overall mild in terms of flavor though did come with a slaw which balanced the textures. The barbacoa taco was impressive - moist, juicy and perfectly seasoned. The carnitas taco was a bit dry for my taste and I probably would not get that again. As a heads up, the salsas that came with the tacos were all quite spicy. Especially the green one which also came with the chips (the flavor was herbal/citrus forward). I've only ordered take out from Taco Chelo so can't speak to the inside, but I love their veggie quesadilla so much, have to give it a shout out. It's stuffed with roasted sweet potato, green onion, and pepitas. So good if you want a cheesy veggie option. Their salsas are also good, they got some kick to them. The chips are fresh and crispy. I think the chips and guac is a decent serving for the price. I also really love their Charra beans. Sooo cozy. Its been hit or miss for me with other items though. Last time I got carne asada tacos they were dripping grease. Literally there was a pool of it in the container. It coated my mouth. I ate it cause I was starving and had nothing else, but it was gross, honestly. It sucked too because I've had the carne asada before and it was good. I think the fish taco is okay - probably a lot better if you eat it there vs take out. Carnitas was also okay imo. I have tried the Sonoran Taco too and it was good - the regular carne asada (when it's not a greasy mess) is better I think. read more

We had some time to kill and were hungry before meeting a friend in Phoenix. I was craving Mexican food so we settled on this place, and I'm glad we did! There was some space at the bar, so we bellied up with our luggage tucked nearby. The sign said order at the register but the bartender was nice and took our order. We got the chips, guac and salsas to start. The guac was bright and fresh, the tomatillo salsa had some heat to it and the darker salsa, whatever it was, was really Smokey and delicious. For tacos, I got the crispy shrimp tacos and the costra. I misunderstood the menu and thought the shrimp was the crispy part of the taco, but the taco shell was crispy instead. It still had some good flavor and came with a consume-esk sauce that softened the tortilla shell. I also got the costra, which had melted cheese and sautéed onion. The cheese was chewy and delicious, and it really amplified the barbacoa meat in the taco. The bartender checked on us throughout and was super attentive. They had the doors open in the front and back plus the front windows and fans throughout so it was nice and cool still on a hot day. Overall it was a great visit and we'd go again next time we're in town! read more
