I will forever come here every time I make to Phoenix/Scottsdale. Taco shells are made in house and make the tacos elite. They make my tacos just how I ask every time I come, and I make changes! Most recently was last night after a rough rental car situation (avoid NU check those reviews eek) and the bartender was awesome. Quick service, friendly and took my order perfectly. Strawberry lemonade is my absolute favorite and if you know me I'm a lemonade girl. Tacos are perfect, the meat has virtually no weird fat on them like most tacos do. Both carne and chicken. Delicious. I'm here for five days this trip and I'm going back for sure, may end up at the Tempe location too. A friend and I came here to catch up and we enjoyed the affordable aspect of this place as well as the vibe! Since this establishment offered various types of tacos, we tried a bit of different kinds and overall enjoyed the differences in taste and texture. Specifically, I thought the sonoran taco was very innovative as it involved two kinds of salsa to provide a color juxtaposition, which also offered the carne asada different experiences in flavor. I also enjoyed the costra taco which was made with caramelized cheese over it, offering a pleasant fried flavor on the tortilla itself. The barbacoa taco was very juicy since the beef was very well-made. In contrast, the carne asada taco was a bit dry for some reason, and relied on the avocado salsa for both taste and juiciness. The fish taco didn't have enough fish, and had a lot of batter around the fish along with excessive pickled onion pieces. Since this spot is located in a very nice area, the arts district, I would recommend it to anyone that's around the area. It'd be a nice lunch after visiting the Phoenix Art Museum, which is only a mile away from here! read more

I didn't know this place would not have table service. You order at the register. That sucks for the servers because they won't make service tips and they still bring stuff to the tables often. The water is serve yourself and they ran out of both of them. I feel like thats a rubios or mc Donald's vibe. Ceviche should be like $11, $14 wasn't worth it. Vegetable taco should be cheaper than all the tacos and it was just sweet potato inside. The tacos are good but they're not what I was expecting. This is more of a fast food style taco. The whole restaurant reminds me of Rubios. The only things we didn't like were the chips and the rice and beans were not good at all, not even Mexican. But like I said the food is good with nice flavors but for a $5 taco I expected plates and table service. No one wants to stand up to order a marg and then order another one after, they'll prob just order 1 marg and go somewhere else when they're done eating, it's not smart. It's not relaxing to eat here after work. We were all fighting for the tables and it's not a vibe. Not enough inside seats and tons of outdoor seats. I'd totally tell the owner to close up the register area, expand the kitchen, and get the girls to be servers. No one wants to pay full price ceviche and tacos to a restaurant with no table service. The vibe doesn't match the price so I think you should change the vibe to be high end and step up service to match the prices of food. Or match the vibe to a fast food all the way and change some prices. The food is fast so they can easily do a drive thru or walk up and order window. Stopped by during my lunch break this week and was met by music - pouring loudly into the restaurant. I ordered my meal and sat down, and quickly realized how much louder the music got and fellow patrons raised their own voices to be able to chat amongst themselves. The food itself was a tad underwhelming. The frijoles had much more "add-ins" than beans, the fried shrimp taco was not as expected but rather a minced mash of shrimp. Had a friend recommend we check this spot out for an all day happy hour on Tuesday and we were so glad we did! We sat right at the bar and everyone was very friendly. I had a regular margarita and it was the perfect refreshing drink after a long day. We also tried each of the tacos on happy hour. The chicken was my favorite but I loved the crispy shrimp too. Really cool spot in the Ro Ro district! Stopped in today with a buddy and it was a great experience! We came in when happy hour was happening and good thing we snagged a table at 5:30pm, because shortly after, the place was full. I wasnt very hungry as I just had a snack with another friend so only got some chips, salsa, guacamole and also a michelada (they use Tecate light for the beer). The place is pretty busy and trendy and lot of people in here. Was a bit loud as I was literally shouting to my friend. This is a pay first and eat next kind of establishment where it was super casual with water canteen for you to get your own water as well as plastic utensils. Selections chosen: -Chips, salsa, and guacamole appetizer to start -shrimp ceviche- mexican wild shrimp, cucumber, cilantro, tomato, avocado with chips. Nice starter. -Fish tacos- beer battered fish, morita crema, cabbage, pickled onion, and pico de gallo. I enjoyed this taco. -Chicken - adobo style with avocado, sour cream and pico de gallo. -Carnitas (pork)- with onion and cilantro -Carne asada (beef) - avocado salsa, onion, cilantro -crispy tacos (with minced shrimp inside and then topped with tomato salsa, pickled onion, avocado and cabbage). I loved the first crispy taco. And then when I had my 2nd crispy taco where it was not enjoyable anymore. I only was able to eat 1/3 of this until I had the most spiciest pepper seed in my mouth that ruined the rest of the experience and had to load with 3 cups of water with watery eyes and burning mouth. I wasn't hungry anymore. A nice way to curb an appetite. -strawberry horchata- yummy - tres leches de coco - something was lacking as it wasn't as tasty as if it was missing an ingredient. I enjoyed Taco Chelo. This review is really a 3.5. There are several taco spots in the area, and this spot was close to my Airbnb, so I decided to try. It was good. My order was wrong as I asked for no cream or cheese, but overall, it was good. I did like the salad with the pumpkin seeds so much so that I came back for the same salad the next day. The salad is a bit overpriced for the amount of food you receive, maybe it's just a small to go portion, but it was different and good enough. This place is so good! I was looking for awesome tacos, and I'm so glad I stopped here. They have an outdoor patio and plenty of seating inside- tables and at the bar. This is a casual spot where you order at the counter and they'll bring the food out to you. They also open at 11:00 and by 11:10 every table was taken. So I'd recommend stopping in when they open or waiting. I ordered the fish tacos, and they were the best tacos I've had. They had huge pieces of fish, cabbage, salad, and more. Everything was SO GOOD but that Taco Gobernador was the star! My friend got ceviche which I tried and it was good. My other friend got tacos, I don't remember which ones though. We came across this spot while strolling around downtown PHX. It had a steady stream of customers and felt lively and fun. The prices were reasonable, and the staff was friendly and helpful. The restroom is shared with neighboring restaurants, so you'll need to ask for a key. Thankfully, there's a handwashing station right outside if you just need to wash your hands. Review on the food: Chicharrones - Just okay. The guac was made with real avocado but lacked flavor. Chicken & Barbacoa Tacos - My friends really enjoyed them. Crispy Taco - Super messy but pretty good. Carne Asada Quesadillas - Tasty. I liked it. Horchata - DELICIOUS! I really want to try their other house-made agua frescas and margaritas next time. Stopped by for a breakfast burrito that they're doing this weekend only. I hope they add it to the full time menu, it's excellent just like the rest of their food! I've been a big fan of Taco Chelo for a long time and it is my go-to spot to bring friends and family who want to get tacos downtown. Aside from their tacos (Barbacoa is my favorite followed closely by Chicken which is $3 during happy hour), I've really appreciated the prompt and friendly service from the staff, both front and back of house. Particularly, Cynthia, Salem, Adre, and Adolfo back in the kitchen have all been extremely kind and professional to my wife and I. Since it was "officially" National Taco Day, as well as Taco Tuesday, the hubby and I wanted to try out a new taco spot. So.... we decided on Taco Chelo on Roosevelt Row. As soon as we walked in, we loved the vibe and atmosphere! Super chill and relaxing. They offer a walk-up style, seat yourself ordering process. The restaurant isn't super big, but they do offer indoor and outdoor seating as well as a small bar. We decided on a variety of tacos and the chips, salsa, and guacamole. I tried this place once for takeout and thought the tacos were good enough to eat again. Unfortunately, my 2nd visit completely changed my mind. I stopped in today, I was told that the Crispy Tacos (minced shrimp) include bacon -- which is **not listed anywhere on the menu**. That's incredibly misleading. I don't eat meat, and including pork as an unlisted ingredient is a huge issue. This isn't a minor detail; it's a serious oversight. Not listing bacon in a dish is unacceptable, especially when dietary restrictions are common and easily avoided with transparency. Because of this, I'll never eat here again. read more

The only reason this place doesn't get a 1/5 I've whew the chorizo torta was INCREDIBLE. The avocado was so fresh, the cheese melted to perfection, the chorizo so flavorful, and the bread perfectly crispy yet soft at the same time. The carne asada tacos were rubbery and bland, the chips hard as rocks, and the barbacoa completely flavorless and so greasy, emily and fatty. Met a friend for lunch and was instantly excited about the ambience and especially the music playing. It has cool beach taco spot feel with incredible art work lining the walls. The menu is well balanced with lots seafood options but also other proteins to choose from. My friend ordered the chips, salsa and guacamole basket, the flamingo and added chicken and an ice tea (which came in the bottle). They asked for a sweetener and they gave them a small cup of agave nectar which was perfect for them. I ordered the horchata, shrimp ceviche appetizer minus the chiltepín and one carne asada taco. All of the food came out quick and fresh! The tortillas are A+! Delicious corn tortillas thick enough to really hold up with a loaded taco. The carne asada also seemed quality, and with the toppings included was very flavorful. The horchata was perfect! Smooth, not grainy and delicious. The ceviche needed a little more lime but that's more of a preference thing for me. My friend said they loved everything they got and was glad they went with the guy at the register's suggestion to add the chicken. Overall great experience, great food, great ambience! This place is so wildly overrated and I would not recommend visiting. Let me start by saying the customer service is good, all the staff was nice. And it's also very well decorated inside. It's the food that's the issue. We ordered the fish tacos, chicken tacos, and guacamole. The guacamole is SO small for the price. Not to mention it is extremely bland. It tastes like avocado with a teaspoon of lime juice, don't waste your time ordering. Now the fish taco, flavor wise was good in comparison to the other tacos, but why lord is most of the fried fish just soggy batter???? A rip off in my opinion. And the chicken taco was so negligible. Got takeout and overall everything was delicious. The fish taco was crispy and fresh though overall mild in terms of flavor though did come with a slaw which balanced the textures. The barbacoa taco was impressive - moist, juicy and perfectly seasoned. The carnitas taco was a bit dry for my taste and I probably would not get that again. As a heads up, the salsas that came with the tacos were all quite spicy. Especially the green one which also came with the chips (the flavor was herbal/citrus forward). Went to Taco Chelo for the first time the other day and was super expressed. Their prices are super good for high end quality tacos and drinks. I usually am weary about ordering margaritas at Mexican restaurants because sometimes they are wayyy too sweet but their margarita was PERFECT. Also apparently you can order their homemade tortillas to go. I ordered 12 to bring home and it was only $3.50 which I think is a great deal. They have a great outdoor seating area and service was quick and staff was very friendly. Highly recommend if you're looking for a quick bite to eat and great vibes! read more

Weds they do pastor and it was my 1st time trying it, They did NOT disappoint. Chunk of pineapple was the perfect topping! Food service is quick. Staff is polite. They have a window where you can see the tortillas being handmade. Bar area has some great options. Their horchata specialty adult drink is tasty. I've only ordered take out from Taco Chelo so can't speak to the inside, but I love their veggie quesadilla so much, have to give it a shout out. It's stuffed with roasted sweet potato, green onion, and pepitas. So good if you want a cheesy veggie option. Their salsas are also good, they got some kick to them. The chips are fresh and crispy. I think the chips and guac is a decent serving for the price. I also really love their Charra beans. Sooo cozy. Its been hit or miss for me with other items though. Last time I got carne asada tacos they were dripping grease. Literally there was a pool of it in the container. It coated my mouth. I ate it cause I was starving and had nothing else, but it was gross, honestly. It sucked too because I've had the carne asada before and it was good. I think the fish taco is okay - probably a lot better if you eat it there vs take out. Carnitas was also okay imo. I have tried the Sonoran Taco too and it was good - the regular carne asada (when it's not a greasy mess) is better I think. read more

We had some time to kill and were hungry before meeting a friend in Phoenix. I was craving Mexican food so we settled on this place, and I'm glad we did! There was some space at the bar, so we bellied up with our luggage tucked nearby. The sign said order at the register but the bartender was nice and took our order. We got the chips, guac and salsas to start. The guac was bright and fresh, the tomatillo salsa had some heat to it and the darker salsa, whatever it was, was really Smokey and delicious. For tacos, I got the crispy shrimp tacos and the costra. I misunderstood the menu and thought the shrimp was the crispy part of the taco, but the taco shell was crispy instead. It still had some good flavor and came with a consume-esk sauce that softened the tortilla shell. I also got the costra, which had melted cheese and sautéed onion. The cheese was chewy and delicious, and it really amplified the barbacoa meat in the taco. The bartender checked on us throughout and was super attentive. They had the doors open in the front and back plus the front windows and fans throughout so it was nice and cool still on a hot day. I was walking around downtown looking for somewhere to eat and this place looked good. I ordered a carnitas taco and a barbacoa taco. There is self serve water in the middle and the tacos were ready SO fast. They both were very flavorful and the corn tortillas were so good. They also gave two little cucumber slices which is always a nice little palette cleanser. It was pretty busy but we were able to grab one empty table. The AC was dripping on us though which may be why no one was sitting at that table. I like the unique light fixtures inside and the skull artwork. read more
