An expensive taco place with $5 tacos with little seating inside (self serve) and counter style ordering. [[HIGHLIGHT]]There is extra seating outside and the food is brought to you as well as taken away.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I tried the crispy shrimp taco, fish taco, gobernador, costra taco, and the Sonoran taco. The shrimp, fish, and gobernador tacos are bland in different ways. The fish is just straight up bland with a lot of pickled red onions but not a lot of other flavors to help the fish stand out. Not sure if they went light on the crema but it needed something else. The shrimp taco's guajillo salsa overpowers the shrimp and I wasn't a huge fan of the flavor. The gobernador has a soy sauce salsa on the taco which sounded interesting but tasted just like soy sauce and grilled fish which I wasn't a fan of. The costra taco needed some kind of salsa to cut the greasiness from the cheese as there is only cheese, onion, and meat on there. The Sonoran taco was pretty good but a bit too salty. As a side note, the water they have is absolutely awful. It tastes so bad I spit it out and didn't drink any of it. It is truly some of the most horrendous water I've ever had the displeasure of tasting. I hesitate to call it potable. It must be a war crime to serve water this bad even to prisoners. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The spot seems to have nice vibes but I wouldn't come back for the food especially looking at the price.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

[[HIGHLIGHT]]A friend and I came here to catch up and we enjoyed the affordable aspect of this place as well as the vibe![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Since this establishment offered various types of tacos, we tried a bit of different kinds and overall enjoyed the differences in taste and texture. Specifically, I thought the sonoran taco was very innovative as it involved two kinds of salsa to provide a color juxtaposition, which also offered the carne asada different experiences in flavor. I also enjoyed the costra taco which was made with caramelized cheese over it, offering a pleasant fried flavor on the tortilla itself. The barbacoa taco was very juicy since the beef was very well-made. In contrast, the carne asada taco was a bit dry for some reason, and relied on the avocado salsa for both taste and juiciness. The fish taco didn't have enough fish, and had a lot of batter around the fish along with excessive pickled onion pieces. Since this spot is located in a very nice area, the arts district, I would recommend it to anyone that's around the area. It'd be a nice lunch after visiting the Phoenix Art Museum, which is only a mile away from here!

We came in when happy hour was happening and good thing we snagged a table at 5:30pm, because shortly after, the place was full. I wasnt very hungry as I just had a snack with another friend so only got some chips, salsa, guacamole and also a michelada (they use Tecate light for the beer). [[HIGHLIGHT]]The place is pretty busy and trendy and lot of people in here.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Was a bit loud as I was literally shouting to my friend.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Salsas were good, michelada was good and my friend said his quesadilla with beef was very good. Overall, a great place to chill and hang out on a Friday evening! I'd definitely come back!

Had a friend recommend we check this spot out for an all day happy hour on Tuesday and we were so glad we did! We sat right at the bar and everyone was very friendly. I had a regular margarita and it was the perfect refreshing drink after a long day. We also tried each of the tacos on happy hour. The chicken was my favorite but I loved the crispy shrimp too. This place is so good! I was looking for awesome tacos, and I'm so glad I stopped here. They have an outdoor patio and plenty of seating inside- tables and at the bar. This is a casual spot where you order at the counter and they'll bring the food out to you. They also open at 11:00 and by 11:10 every table was taken. So I'd recommend stopping in when they open or waiting. I ordered the fish tacos, and they were the best tacos I've had. They had huge pieces of fish, cabbage, salad, and more. I could barely hold them. I should've used a fork, but I made it work. I highly recommend stopping here for great tacos!

This is a pay first and eat next kind of establishment where it was super casual with water canteen for you to get your own water as well as plastic utensils.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]The weather was nice enough to enjoy seating outside in the patio area.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Selections chosen: -Chips, salsa, and guacamole appetizer to start -shrimp ceviche- mexican wild shrimp, cucumber, cilantro, tomato, avocado with chips. Nice starter. -Fish tacos- beer battered fish, morita crema, cabbage, pickled onion, and pico de gallo. I enjoyed this taco. -Chicken - adobo style with avocado, sour cream and pico de gallo. -Carnitas (pork)- with onion and cilantro -Carne asada (beef) - avocado salsa, onion, cilantro -crispy tacos (with minced shrimp inside and then topped with tomato salsa, pickled onion, avocado and cabbage). I loved the first crispy taco. And then when I had my 2nd crispy taco where it was not enjoyable anymore. I only was able to eat 1/3 of this until I had the most spiciest pepper seed in my mouth that ruined the rest of the experience and had to load with 3 cups of water with watery eyes and burning mouth. I wasn't hungry anymore. A nice way to curb an appetite. -strawberry horchata- yummy - tres leches de coco - something was lacking as it wasn't as tasty as if it was missing an ingredient. I would like to come back to try the crispy tacos but will need to make sure it doesn't have the spiciest seed as I don't believe there was an indication for something super spicy.

I enjoyed Taco Chelo. This review is really a 3.5. There are several taco spots in the area, and this spot was close to my Airbnb, so I decided to try. It was good. My order was wrong as I asked for no cream or cheese, but overall, it was good. I did like the salad with the pumpkin seeds so much so that I came back for the same salad the next day. The salad is a bit overpriced for the amount of food you receive, maybe it's just a small to go portion, but it was different and good enough. Might be worth checking out if you're in the area.

I though it was good but I wasn't wowed. I was alone having a few beers and wanted some tacos: a classic Phoenix night. I sat at the bar hoping for efficiency but didn't t really get it. I was one of two patrons and had to gently remind them that I had indeed ordered some food. We came across this spot while strolling around downtown PHX. It had a steady stream of customers and felt lively and fun. The prices were reasonable, and the staff was friendly and helpful. The restroom is shared with neighboring restaurants, so you'll need to ask for a key. Thankfully, there's a handwashing station right outside if you just need to wash your hands. Review on the food: Chicharrones - Just okay. The guac was made with real avocado but lacked flavor. Chicken & Barbacoa Tacos - My friends really enjoyed them. Crispy Taco - Super messy but pretty good. Carne Asada Quesadillas - Tasty. I liked it. Horchata - DELICIOUS! I really want to try their other house-made agua frescas and margaritas next time. Desserts- I think it was a tres leches with coconut - yummy, not too sweet. Overall, we had a great time hanging out in their outdoor patio. Good food, great vibes. I'd definitely go back for a light bite.

Went here on a Saturday night with friends. It was only my second visit here. It did not disappoint. I ordered the chicharonnes, carne asada taco, and Taco Gobernador. Everything was SO GOOD but that Taco Gobernador was the star! My friend got ceviche which I tried and it was good. My other friend got tacos, I don't remember which ones though. They tried my Taco Gobernador and we have all been talking and thinking about it since we left. I will be back to order a bunch of them soon. Since it was "officially" National Taco Day, as well as Taco Tuesday, the hubby and I wanted to try out a new taco spot. So.... we decided on Taco Chelo on Roosevelt Row. As soon as we walked in, we loved the vibe and atmosphere! Super chill and relaxing. They offer a walk-up style, seat yourself ordering process. The restaurant isn't super big, but they do offer indoor and outdoor seating as well as a small bar. We decided on a variety of tacos and the chips, salsa, and guacamole. We really enjoyed everything we tried! The food was tasty and the drinks were the perfect way to end our day! We will definitely be back!! Bonus - it was also HH so we even saved some $$$!

First time here! Parking was easy - we came on a Saturday night around 6pm. It was busy but not too busy! Parallel parking on the street - it was super easy to pay with credit card. Menus were available right when you walked in. We ordered at the counter. It was happy hour yay! I ordered one carne asada taco and one chicken taco (this was on their HH menu). My friend ordered 3 carnitas tacos (HH many). We also got an order of chips and guac and we each had a house margarita (all were on the HH menu). We sat ourselves helped ourselves to water cups. The bathroom is outside around the corner and you'll need to ask for a key. It was clean. Food came quickly! And overall - very delicious! Chips & guac - chips were fresh and crunchy and perfectly salted. Good amount of chips provided for the cost. Guac was a very small serving. It was average tasting. It came either this green spicy sauce - super yummy (I put some on my tacos too). It also came either this other dark red sauce but I didn't try it. It could be something Smokey) My carne asada taco was muy bueno!! So so good. And I'm a carne asada taco snob. I would totally come back and eat 10 of these in one sitting. My chicken taco was also very good. The meat was tender and very flavorful. I'm often hesitant to eat chicken tacos at new places I'm trying bc the meat can sometimes be dry. But not this place!!! In the summer it is humid in here so keep that in mind to dress accordingly. Service was okay, I know it's self serve and you order at the counter but the timing of the ticket orders is off. My friend and I on the same ticket had food brought out at different times. I think the kitchen needs to work on timing and the front on responses. Taco Chelo was a nice experience, I had the carnitas taco and my wife had an asada taco. They were both good, the salsas were lacking some flavor in my opinion. Even tried their new hotter one and didn't think the kick was very much. Not sure I'd seek this place out but wouldn't be sad if I was in the area and we ended up here. The service was friendly, real small place so had to sit outside in a lot of heat had misters at least. Bathroom is down an outdoor walkway and need a key just an FYI. read more

Visiting for a short work trip: Ate at Taco Chelo for lunch w some colleagues and we liked it so much I went back for dinner the same day w different colleagues! The staff were super friendly and tacos were all fantastic. The side of rice and beans was a standout favorite, as well as the tres leches. I grew up in the southwest but now live elsewhere so am so happy to get family owned, delicious Mexican food whenever I can. Highly recommend! read more

Taco celo is a beloved downtown classic. I particularly like the rumchada and the little quesadillas. Prices are reasonable, and it's a great place for a quick snack if you're looking for a casual stop. We like to go on the way back from sports games. The only think I dislike is the misters outside, which drip and make it muggy during the summer. Otherwise, I usually enjoy sitting outside and people watching. There's usually a line, but it moves quickly. It's counter service, so expect casual. read more

So I come Taco Chelo often and I have to say today, the person working was not the best person. I actually would say they need to get retrained potentially even fired because he had the audacity to tell me that the salsa that have been sitting outside in the heat is what they do. Normally they just leave salsa out in the Arizona heat that's crazy. Why did he tell me that because I asked him for fresh salsa because they brought my food out, tacos mind you, tacos that go with Salsa you know. Who doesn't know that you have salsa on your tacos and my tacos are getting cold and the salsa never came and then he had the audacity to tell me hey we have salsa sitting out on the sun and that we should've had thatsalsa you guys got a fire that guy. read more

Let's cut to the chase: the tacos here are pretty good and authentic. The decorations are cute too and I like that they have both indoor and outdoor seating. You'll have to find street parking as there is no parking lot. The only vegetarian option they had was a sweet potato taco, which was good, but I would have liked more options since I'm not a fan of sweet potato. The beef tacos were good and reminded me of street/taco truck tacos. I'd come here again, but admittedly I think I've had better tacos.. or maybe I just had high expectations since I've heard a lot of people talk about Taco Chelo. read more

Wandered in here while walking around the Roosevelt Row area on a lovely Friday afternoon. When we went up to order, we were told about their happy hour specials (Score!!) so we went that route. We had chicken tacos, beef taquitos, and barbacoa tacos. Everything was fresh and tasty! The corn tortillas had a very homemade look and taste. Servers were very sweet and the patio was wonderful (in late November ). If you want some homemade tacos and good margaritas, this is the place to go. It's a smaller space but they still have a good amount of seating both indoor and outdoor. My friend was visiting from New York and wanted to find some tacos to brag about when she went back east and she was blown away I still think about the barbacoa and carnitas tacos weeks later. And it doesn't hurt that they have a good happy hour for margaritas read more

After years of walking past this place every day, I finally decided to give it a try! Fresh, flavorful tacos that aren't too heavy make Taco Chelo a popular choice. What I like: It's not the most spacious taqueria, but they manage to give it decent enough seating and plenty of atmosphere. Our food was out in about 10 minutes despite being quite busy. Corn tortillas are the best I've had in a while. The agua frescas are refreshing. Things I don't like: I think the meat is dry. I think the salsas are too mild and too tart. And the menu is limited, with some choices only being available on particular days of the week (weird). I always thought this place would be mad overrated, but it's not. Just a little overrated. Not the worst lunch option on the row. read more

I absolutely love this place!! Street parking can be a bit of a challenge, but I love the casual atmosphere. After ordering at the counter, you bring a number to your table and the food and drinks are brought out to you. They have minimal seating inside, lots of outdoor seating, and a few chairs at the bar area as well. Whatever is serve yourself. I love their prickly pear margarita and their Oaxaca margarita. My favorite dish is the flamingo! Definitely a must try!! My friend from Mexico says this is the only Mexican restaurant in Phoenix he is willing to eat at. read more

I came to Yelp looking for the best fish taco and dang yelp didn't disappoint. I don't like fish that much but needed a fish taco during lent on a Friday. Well, maybe I don't like fish tacos, but I like good fish tacos! I think I would order this again even if I could eat meat! The potion was huge and it wasn't fishy at all! New fave spot in downtown Phoenix! The food is very good with homemade tortillas and good prices. The staff is quick and friendly. They have some tables inside and outside space too. The torta and costras were very good. I really liked their fun cocktails as well. Definitely a repeat taco spot, we've come back a few times now and it's always delicious. I recommend trying a bit of everything. It's a small restaurant but the patio will be fun to use when it's not too hot or cold outside. I look forward to coming back some more! read more

Would give more than 5 stars if I could. SO GOOD. Every taco we tried was so flavorful and delicious, and the tortillas were the best I've ever had. The happy hour spicy marg was also perfect. An amazing meal before the suns game. Cannot wait to be back here to try out more of the tacos. read more

Pros: Great food, Happy Hour, Music & Vibe is what brings us back even though it's a 30+ minute drive. Cons: No Fly control, Handwashing station lacks cleanliness & right next to a trash can where a fly fest builds up, Tables are always dirty from previous guests, and shared restrooms so keys are always missing, RR has no hand soap & the cleanliness lacks up-keeping. Delicious food with a chill ambience. I ordered barbacoa tacos, costra tacos, a barbacoa quesadilla, a horchata, and rice and beans. You can tell that everything is handmade and made with love. My favorite things were the horchata (it is made to order and delicious!) and the costra tacos (the crispy cheese on top make it a stand out item). I found the quesadillas to be a bit small and greasy for the price, so I would most likely skip those next time. Other than that, everything was incredible and I can't wait to come back soon! read more

Now these tacos are nothing like San Diego (or Mexico), but for Arizona, I would say these are top tier. My boyfriend told me that the tortillas are freshly made by hand, and they are near perfect -- so good! He ordered a chicken and two carnitas tacos, I got a fish, carnitas and barbacoa taco, and we got the chicharrones. I will say that the tacos were very oily, as in dripping, but that also adds some flavor. The fish taco, which also had a rich crema, and the barbacoa tacos were my favorite. The carnitas taco was also tasty, but I had a lot of fat pieces, which my boyfriend is more a fan of. The chicharrones had a kick to them, but were so crunchy and delicious. We each had a Jarritos to drink, but their beverages sounded enticing. We also sat outside since it was so nice out, but I would like to dine in because the establishment looks cute. I ordered the veggie tacos with roasted sweet potatoes (skin on, which was absolutely the right call), pepitas, feta, and all the right toppings. Whoever prepped those sweet potatoes deserves a raise because they were cut into the perfect sized pieces. Every bite had a little sweetness, a little crunch, a little saltiness... it just worked. My dining partner ordered the barbacoa tacos, and I didn't even have to ask if they were good. The involuntary "Mmm..." after the first bite answered that question. Four tacos disappeared in record time, followed by, "I could've eaten two more." That's about as glowing of a review as you're going to get. Now let's talk about these tortillas. Handmade. Corn. Tortillas. Are you kidding me? They're the kind of tortillas that had me question every tortilla I've ever eaten. Soft, fresh, and somehow they manage to steal the spotlight even with everything else on the plate being so good. The chips and guacamole were excellent, too. The chips have to be made in-house and they disappeared at an alarming rate. From the moment I stepped into this taco haven, I knew I was in for a treat! I kicked things off with a fish taco and a carne asada taco, both of which were absolutely delicious. The tortillas were perfectly cooked and the option to switch from corn to flour was a nice touch. I also ventured into the Sonoran taco territory with the carne asada version, but I'll be honest, it was a bit too greasy for my taste, so I'll probably skip that next time. But hey, it's all part of the adventure! The real star of the show was the coconut tres leches. It was a dessert that literally stole the spotlight and made me want to give a standing ovation. Plus, their agua fresca, the jamaica, was refreshing and utterly delightful. The food was perfectly balanced--flavorful without being overly seasoned, making it an excellent choice for a large group with different tastes. The salad was a standout, packed with fresh romaine, pepitas, orange, and cotija cheese. However, my absolute favorite was the roasted sweet potato vegetable taco; it was incredible! Great new place on Roosevelt! Delicious Got my tacos 5 minutes after ordering. Main takeaways: freshly made tortillas, unique salsa options, and authentic taco ingredients. Tacos are good for a treat yo self moment! Love the decorations in here and how you can see everything they are cooking up in the back! Especially being able to watch them cook the fresh tortillas! Bar is tiny, as well as limited indoor seating. Peak hours it is best to do a to-go order. Al Pastor is my favorite. I do love how they carry my favorite tequila Centenario! Went there during lunch time and there was not a lot of seating (first come first serve) which was a little annoying, but we eventually got a table. I ordered the Chilaquiles, which are essentially breakfast nachos, and you have a choice of protein to add. I chose the birria beef which was perfectly slow-cooked and complemented the corn tortilla chips, cheese, and eggs superbly. I opted for both the red chile and green chile sauce which coated the chips along with a generous layer of tangy cotija cheese. I asked for the eggs scrambled and they cooked them just how I like them... fairly dry and in a thin griddled layer.
