I am once again leaving Cocina Madrigal feeling better all around. The food, while being prepared in a food truck, is every bit as good as what was made in the brick and motor, which should be back up and running in the next couple of months. . Chef Leo is almost always on site, and today was no exception. The air conditioned indoor seating area was bustling. Chef Leo still made the time to speak with every one of us in the room. I cannot say enough good things about out the restaurant, the food, and especially the people. Waiting for the brick and mortar to reopen hasn't been too bad since I can still come here and get everything that makes for a fantastic experience. I rarely give out five stars but this restaurant deserved five stars. From their customer service and the phenomenal fresh homemade food that was brought to the table was amazing. The tortillas or freshly made, and you can tell they put so much love into what they cook with their marinated, slow roasted meats. I decided to go with one of each of the enchiladas and so glad I was able to try both the Barbacoa and the chicken. I can't express my gratitude and admiration for the waiter that we had. He loved explaining the menu to us, which I can truly appreciate. He was also so kind to me and my family and attentive to our table. To get to the food truck/dining area, make sure you follow the signs on the street-- it is a little bit confusing to find if you're going too fast! The chips were served warm and were salted very nicely. The Al Pastor was not my favorite, however, the steak taco was the best I've ever had. The steak was so tender and the additions were a really great touch. The Jamaica Agua Fresca was the best drink for a hot day. The service was quick and I was greeted immediately after I parked. Went here for lunch right from the airport. The place is currently undergoing reservation. I found the website misleading specially place being owned by a renowned chef as the website states. It is like a Taquaria and serving food from the food truck. Eats nothings more than a nearby eatery honestly. We got one entre, one kids meal and two non alcoholic drinks for 70$. I honestly just wanted some authentic, non-chain Mexican food and this absolutely hit the spot. I asked for recommendations and was offered the breaded whitefish with accompanying flour tortilla shells, rice, and beans. While I waited and dug into the chips and salsa, I was unprepared for that flavor bomb. It's definitely not the standard fare tomato salsa, but has a depth of flavor and uniqueness to it that's hard to pinpoint. I was still noshing on it even after finishing my meal. The plate arrived with a massive, but delicately fried filet of whitefish, hot and crispy breading when I sliced it into taco-able chunks. I was brought some standard ranch as well as chipotle ranch for the salad and the chipotle was the right choice. There is a sizable bucket of fresh hot sauces on each table and I didn't spare one from the taste test. My absolute favorite that complimented the fish was the la guacamayo and I took home a bottle for good measure (purchased...). The fish was delicate, perfectly fried, lightly breaded, and didn't sit heavy at all. The rice was pretty standard fare and if I had to nitpick anything, I'd love to see the beans have a little more flier and substance to the plate. All in all, an absolute winner and if I'm ever back in phoenix; I WILL be hitting this wonderful restaurant again. read more

While the food is just as good as ever, sadly a major fire has the restaurant relocated to a temporary building down a small side street (follow signs for Food Truck) and as the temporary kitchen is a food truck, there are a few menu limitations (no booze being the main one)). They still have my wife's favorites-steak tacos and my go to -the meaty chicken enchiladas. For now, the Food is served in takeout containers but they have ample seating inside and out in the temporary space and most importantly the same strong customer service and friendliness. While they work to rebuild, they need our dining dollars more than ever so make a point to over there and get some of their great chow! read more

Service throughout the meal was friendly, attentive, helpful, and the team kept things running smoothly even with the temporary setup. But the food is where this place really shines. We started with Guacamole de Casa, which comes with chips and salsa. Fresh, bright, and a great way to start off the meal. For our mains we ordered Beef Tenderloin Steak Tacos with pomegranate marinade, chipotle aioli, fried peppers and onions, and gorgonzola cheese. These tacos were incredible. The flavors were layered and bold and honestly I am drooling a little just typing this out. We also tried the Barbacoa Green Chile Enchiladas made with slow roasted beef and New Mexican Hatch green chile sauce. Rich, savory, and packed with flavor. To drink we had agua frescas, jamaica and piña, which were both refreshing and perfect alongside the food. Dessert absolutely delivered, too! The churros are dusted with cinnamon sugar, filled with cream, and come with a sweet glaze for dipping. So good! Our server also let us know about a coconut cream pie that was not listed on the menu and we are glad that he did. It was one of the best coconut cream pies I have had, topped with toasted coconut shavings and full of coconuty deliciousness. It is the little details and thoughtful flavor combinations that this place really nails. If you are looking for one Mexican restaurant to take visiting friends or family, or you just want a truly memorable meal, this is an easy pick. I had three tacos; shrimp, beef tenderloin, and the al pastor. All three were amazing. Could've been the owner but as I was leaving a guy approached and asked how everything was, thanked me for the business and said he hopes I return... makes all the difference. I am so happy this place is still around. I would drop in frequently to get the Jerk Chicken Sandwich. It was a grilled chicken breast with lettuce, tomato, onion, and sauce all on a delicious bun. I would always get fries as my side. At some point last year, the building was closed. I kept watching for it to reopen and finally earlier this year as I was driving down 16th Street, I saw a sign on the corner of Wood St 'Cocina Madrigal Food Truck' with an arrow pointing down the side street I was so happy and finally made my way there. The menu is condensed so no Jerk Chicken Sandwich, but everything else like tacos, burritos, guacamole, quesadillas etc is still available. This is the temporary location for Cocina Madrigal. They have their taco truck set up just down the street from the restaurant while it's being renovated until October. There is a limited menu but they do have inside seating with service. As well as outdoor patio seating. The plates are all to go containers along with the silverware because of the location. It was nice to get some of their food again. I missed it. Today I got the mango steak salad I've had some spicy walnuts. It was quite delicious. Meat was juicy and tender and the dressing was not overwhelming with the flavor. So if you're looking to satisfy your craving like I was you have that opportunity now. This place was some of the most authentic Mexican food I've had in the area. The lady who took our orders was very friendly and talkative. The employees were very attentive as well. I ordered three tacos: shrimp, Al Pastor, and Steak. Out of three I found the Steak to be the best one. There was some fried potatoes and cheese to go with it and the steak was not dry at all, had lots of flavor. Al Pastor was also solid I wish they put more pineapple in there. If I were to go back I'd probably order 2 steak and one Al pastor taco, the shrimp was alright. I'm glad that they did stuff the tacos with a good amount of meat. One thing to note is the prices for most of the entrees are about $18-$20 pre-tax so expect to pay a little more. Overall if you don't mind the price I'd say this place is pretty solid if you're looking for quick authentic Mexican food. 7.7/10. read more

I was fortunate to be back in Phoenix and I realized it's been 5 years since I've had the opportunity to quench my appetite with the food from Cocina Madrigal. The chicken enchiladas were succulent and, in my opinion, the best green chile in the valley of the sun. The tacos al pastor and rice and beans were made from scratch and were great . The owner took tike to coldest with us and the wait staff made sure we had everything we needed . I was in the area and decided to try Cocina Madrigal. I got there and I had totally forgotten it has burned down, but... A sign said they had a good truck. They've opened up a trailer in a dirt parking lot. I sat down and was told the food is the same and the restaurant will reopen in about three months. I had the chicken and barbacoa enchiladas. So freakin good. Although it says food truck on the outside they have indoor restaurant style seating that is perfect on a hot day. The inside is clean and tastefully decorated. The food here is legit and authentic. You can taste the amazing flavors of each delicious dish. I ordered the 2 plate enchiladas and selected the mushroom and green chile one. My husband ordered the 3 tacos and was able to try different meats for each one. He picked chicken, shrimp, and the barbacoa. The star of the show for me was the mushroom enchilada. Im pretty picky about food and biting into this was delightful treat. The mushrooms were sautéed perfectly and paired nicely with the red sauce. The barbacoa meat was tender and soft and was good as well but I really liked the mushroom enchilada. For appetizers we also ordered the guacamole with bacon. This was serviced in thick chunks of fresh cut avocado and crunchy bacon on top. Delish! Our server was also super friendly and attentive. He made sure we found everything to our satisfaction and checked on us regularly. I would highly recommend this place even if you're driving out a bit further. The barbacoa tacos were chock full of tasty beef, but I preferred the pastor tacos, because the tasty pork was accompanied by pickled onions and grilled pineapple, which added a really nice contrast to the pork. Started off strong with the mango margarita - sweet, slightly tangy, and very mango-y. The got the Trio with salsa, guacamole, and Oaxaca fundido. Probably one of the best guacamoles I've ever had. I loved how all the ingredients were so finely chopped in the avocado. The fundido was savory, delicious with the chips. Enchilada - one mushroom and one birria - both tasted too and had distinct flavor profiles.
