I come back here time and time again for the pazole with a side of fry bread. The stew is so flavorful especially with the fresh cilantro, onions, and lime they provide for you to add to your taste. The chunks of meat are generous and I've never bit into anything wierd (that's a deal breaker for me) and the broth is nice and thick. I'll rip a chunk of the perfectly fried, but not too greasy bread and dunk it into that fabulous broth and it emerges perfectly coated, getting soaked up by the little fried crunchies. And don't worry about it ever being soggy, you'll never leave it on your plate long enough for that to happen. Once you taste that first bite you won't talk to your friends, or check in on your phone, or even wipe up your kids spills until every morsel has been consumed. I'm telling you this dish will change your life. Just don't be thwarted by the jerk outside selling jewelry. He's unpleasant and obnoxious, and he has a nasty mouth. Hands down the most memorable fry bread I've ever had in my life. Growing up in New Mexico, we usually frequent the NM State Fair in the fall for our fry bread fix or attend the Pueblo feast days. I had heard good things about The Fry Bread House and during my latest trip to Phoenix I made sure to visit. I ordered the Combo Taco with extra red chile on the side. The fry bread itself was perfect. It had a nice crunchy texture on the outside, but was nice and fluffy on the inside. The red chile beef reminded me a lot of the traditional New Mexican red chile my family makes. Service was excellent. I went during the lunch rush and it took no more than 10 minutes to wait in line, order, and receive my food. The restaurant was nice and clean too. Definitely recommend visiting. This will be a must stop for me every time I go to Phoenix. read more

I went here today for lunch and it was just wonderful! The food is delicious. I had to posole with an Indian taco and I would order it again. You order at the counter here and then they deliver it to your table. Although it was the noon hour, we ordered and then it was delivered to our table in about one minute. Very fast! The ambience is fine. This is a very small restaurant and I bet when the weather isn't so hot it would be nice to sit out on the patio. There was a lady out there selling jewelry, but I didn't look because it is so hot today! The parking lot is fairly small so you may have to park on the street. That's fine, but much of the street is for resident parking only so I'm not sure what to suggest if the lot is full, but don't let that keep you from coming to this wonderful little restaurant! A few loved ones were in town visiting me recently and found this restaurant I had never heard of before, saying this place is a MUST-TRY for anyone in the Phoenix area! Upon further investigation, I learned that indeed it is a James Beard award winner and multiple-time Best of Phoenix winner! An additional perk is that they're Tohono O'odham owned and operated since 1992. Despite it being lunchtime on a Friday, the place was packed! We were extremely lucky with both parking in the small, adjacent lot and with finding a table right after we ordered. We tried to get a pretty even spread of what the restaurant had to offer: HOMINY STEW CHUNKS OF BEEF, WITH ONIONS AND CORN -- very comforting soup! not sure what hominy stew entails, but it was very easy to eat even amongst picky eaters HONEY FRY BREAD -- extremely soft fried bread with honey and powdered sugar on top, a lightly sweet doughy dessert WAILA FRY BREAD $17.25 TWO GROUND BEEF PATTIES, ONIONS, CHEESE, LETTUCE, TOMATO, HATCH CHILI -- more smokey/charry than what I'd prefer normally, even as someone who likes charred meats! very interesting they used fry bread even for this burger ULTIMATE TACO $15.75 BEEF, REFRIED BEANS, ONIONS, SOUR CREAM, CHEESE, LETTUCE -- didn't get to try this one but it was huge I've never had Tohono O'odham food before, or even any Native American food, but I was pretty unimpressed with this restaurant. I hadn't stopped at The Fry Bread House in a very long time. I have been a customer of theirs for years. I even remember the other two locations before the current location. The menu evidently has changed as I was looking forward to a chorizo and beans which they no longer have on their menu. So I went with the Native Taco which still made my tummy feel good. As Summer comes I am pretty sure that most of the orders will be takeout. The place is kept clean but can't accommodate a large crowd. Their service is still impeccable and they do it with a smile. Chile was mild but had a good flavor. Topped with shredded cheese, lettuce and tomatoes. Price for Combo was $15.95 paid separate for fountain drinks $3.25 ea came with free refills. After we ordered a fry bread with sugar & cinnamon on top with a side of honey at $10.50 it was so Good! We arrived about 5:45 pm on a Monday and it wasn't busy. Amazing! I tried this place with my family today, and the food did not disappoint. We ordered several tacos, posole, chocolate fry bread, and honey fry bread. The tacos were huge and bursting with flavor. The green and the red sauces provided were too spicy for my wife but added even more enjoyment to my taco. The posole had a good level of spiciness to it too and had a unique corn flavor that I wasn't expecting. Finally, we loved the sweet fry breads especially the chocolate one. The restaurant was closed for Memorial Day, but their DoorDash was left on, so I didn't know they were closed when I placed and paid for a pickup order. I was surprised to get to the restaurant and see a closed sign when so many other restaurants were open that day. Because DoorDash automatically marks these orders as 'completed,' it turned into a multi-day hassle to get a refund, and I ultimately had to dispute the charge to get my money back. I left my name and number for a Fry Bread House manager to call but they never did. Just a friendly heads-up to management to please turn off the apps on holidays so future customers don't have to fight for refunds (I wasn't the only confused person pulling up to their parking lot), and a note to diners to not order on any holidays. read more

Okay, I've been rummaging through the James Beard lists and such for the area, and I stumbled upon this gem that received a James Beard a while ago. It's a small little joint. I took a friend here, and we both got the ultimate fry bread taco! They offer it with ground beef, or red/green chili beef. The green chili was the spicier option, so we went with that. Shoutout to the lady at the register for taking the time to walk us through the menu so we could decide what we wanted. The fry bread is similar in concept to a pita combined with a funnel cake, I suppose. It's actually quite reminiscent of the Vietnamese Bánh Tiêu, if you've had that before. Texturally, its soft, tender, and cuts fairly easily. Couple that with the toppings of beans, cheese, onions, sour cream, and the beef, and you're in business. It really is like a massive taco, served open face, and you can eat it with your hands, with a fork and knife, or any combination of the two! It's fun! As an intro to the Native American cuisine of this side of America, it's a great beginning. It makes me wonder what other things I've been missing. Okay, it's gonna sound reductive, but the taco is pretty much a ginormous chalupa. Once you see it, you can't unsee it. Based on our reviewing Fry Bread House seemed to be the place to go! We visited in the late afternoon (between normal meal times) but were surprised that it was still so busy! They don't have much seating inside (it's a tiny spot) but they have ample tables and chairs outside (all of which was packed during our recent visit). We planned on takeout, which was good since I don't think we would have found a spot to eat! There was ample room to wait while our order was being prepared, which didn't take too long especially considering how busy it was. We had fun looking at all the decor around the room while we waited - and we learned the Guy Fieri visited on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives! Fun and eclectic decor that was on-theme all around. The main dish seemed to be the fry bread taco, so that's where we focused our eyes. I was pleased to see so many options! My husband opted for the ultimate taco, which featured beef (he chose the mix of red and green chili beef) and refried beans alongside onions and lettuce. I went for the the vegetarian taco, which substituted the beef for green chili strips. Even with transporting our meal back to our hotel, it really didn't lose much integrity. The fry bread was as I remember - substantial yet not super heavy and with a nice crisp. The taco take was different from how I originally enjoyed it, but I thought the pairings worked just right. The various flavors blended together to make it certainly the most unique taco I've had! The tacos were decently sized, leaving us full but not overly stuffed, afterwards. I am a vegetarian so I ordered the Vegetarian Taco which comes with refried beans, green chili, onions, sour cream, cheese and lettuce in a fry bread. My friend got the beef taco. We also ordered the sweet fry bread with honey and powdered sugar. There is no beer or wine here -- so I ordered an ice tea. The inside was full so we grabbed a picnic table outside. The food came out very quickly and we started digging in. Mine was really good but waaaaaaay too much sour cream (next time I would order on the side or just a little) because it made the fry bread a little soggy, especially by the end. But overall it was very good and I finished the whole thing (which is really quite large) -- but $14.00!!! Seems a bit pricey to me for just a taco -- also the beef taco is only $13 -- so wasn't sure why the meat taco was less (unless they were going by the number of ingredients but meat is surely more expensive than beans?) The sweet fry bread was good but a bit chewy and also not nearly enough honey -- I was actually even wondering if they put honey on it cause I couldn't see or taste it. If you choose the green chili option, be warned it has a little kick to it. I would equate its potency to a 2 out of 10 on a Thai spice scale (I apologize, that's the only scale I know of). This place is legit - owned and operated by Tohono O'odham Nation - you order at the counter and they bring out the food to your table. I got the Vegetarian Taco - a HUGE fry bread (the size of a small pizza) filled with refried beans, green chili strips, onions, sour cream, shredded cheese, and lettuce. Yummy! Each bite had a good chunk of chewy and crispy fry bread mixed with the cool lettuce and warm beans, a perfect mix of textures and flavors. When I opened up the wrapping, I thought I'll never finish it because it was so big. But I took bite after delicious bite, and before long, it was gone. We also got a grilled sweet corn from the daily specials menu - probably the sweetest, most delicious corn I've ever had. Finally, I had just enough room to share a honey fry bread - hot fry bread drizzled with honey - for dessert. The first bites are a little chewy, but after the fry bread cools, it becomes crispy so you get all the textures. No frills here, just excellent food. I'm not surprised that both James Beard and Guy Fieri both gave thumbs up to The Fry Bread House! It's awesome! If you haven't tried it yet, you are missing out. What are you waiting for? The frybread itself is really really good! Very light and fluffy and excellent with all the fillings. My family's favorite thought was the sweet honey frybread. That was AMAZING. This was a bucket list item I got to check off. I brought my daughter to Phoenix to see Madison Beer, I told her my only requirement was to eat at Fry Bread House on Saturday. We arrived to town a little early and waited in the truck for them to open. Close to opening time, there was already a line to get in. Luckily we were one of the first people in and we got to have a table inside. I ordered the Ultimate Taco with red Chile beef. Wow, incredible. It definitely lived up to the hype. So good. If I lived in Phoenix, I would eat here all the time. My daughter for a cinnamon and sugar fry bread with butter and she enjoyed hers as well. We ate quickly and as we were leaving there were others calling dibs on our table and we noticed the line was very long by that time. I read a tip somewhere that said to come at opening to beat the rush and they were right. I look forward to my next trip to Phoenix solely for this meal again. Can't come to Phoenix and not try a Navajo taco. I've always wanted to eat Native American cuisine but never remotely had a chance to until I took a work trip here. Inside is smallish with enough tables to allow a good number of people to dine in. But, the space isn't large enough to contain the amount of people that probably want to eat here given the awards and accolades this place earned. James Beard and Best of Phoenix come to mind. Aside from that there are Native American portraits and/or paintings on the walls, along with clippings from media about the restaurant's success. Service was super friendly, welcoming, pleasant, and happy to provide. A couple of items that were possibly forgotten or slow to come out, were brought to the table immediately after. We ordered quite a bit of food; combo fry bread, hominy stew with chumuth, beef fry bread, ultimate fry bread, powdered sugar fry bread, and honey fry bread. Everything tasted great, didn't really need additional seasoning either. The fry bread held a decent texture under all the toppings. I had the combo one which is meat, cheese, and beans. The lettuce sort of killed it but might as well find some health benefit in there lol. The hominy stew was terrific as well, almost like a corn tortilla in a cup with large chunks of beef. The chumuth was like a tortilla of sorts but a bit chewier. Not bad but not overly amazing. The desert fry breads were also great. Overall a terrific outing here as well and I'd happily come back for other offerings resembling tacos of more Native cuisine. read more

Stopped in while in town for the CFP semifinal game and was blown away by how good and busy Fry Bread House was. I ordered from the friendly cashier and waited a short time for my ultimate taco without beans. The spices in the beef stew and the fry bread itself make this taco stand out. A combination of chiles and other flavors let you know you are in the Southwest. The fry bread itself is an amazing texture - light, airy and a little bit crispy that is way better than any tortilla, even hand made. Both the red and green salsas further enhance the taste. It can be messy so I recommend eating it the way it's wrapped and gradually peeling the paper back or using a knife and fork. This was an enjoyable and authentic experience that felt like eating in my best Native American friend's home. I'll be in a few weeks during spring training and will try to time it better to avoid the massive crowd. read more

The tacos are so good and so is the plain fry bread! Skip the sweet fry bread and the burro if you're looking for novelty. The fry bread is cooked perfectly - fluffy and not too oily. It's also huge. read more
