This was our first visit to The Fry Bread House. It was small inside, but we immediately found a seat after ordering. The person who took our order was distracted and provided poor customer service. We had to each repeat our orders, no eye contact, etc. We both ordered the Ultimate Taco, my wife chose Birria beef and I chose Green Chili beef. We ordered the Vegetable Beef soup to share. The food was delivered promptly. The food needed salt, but was otherwise delicious. The side red and green salsas provided were flavorful and provided the right amount of heat. Spoiler Alert! I heard about the Fry Bread House on an episode of Guy's Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives a few years ago and I have been dying to try it ever since. I begged my executive chef to come try it while he was in the area visiting family, and then we heard our conference would be on the Phoenix area this year I was thrilled, after years of anticipation - it was finally my turn to try it! We arrived in the afternoon, and they wrre BUSY! We grabbed a table when it opened up and looked at the menu to decide what we wanted. As we were making some tough decisions, a women & her grandma joined us at our table - they were so sweet and made other food suggestions for us while we were in the area. We place our order and chatted with our are friends while we waited. The food was brought out quickly and MY GOD that thing is HUGE! It was as big as the plate! It was delicious & so filling. We also ordered the sweet fry bread with honey and powdered sugar. There is no beer or wine here -- so I ordered an ice tea. The inside was full so we grabbed a picnic table outside. The food came out very quickly and we started digging in. Mine was really good but waaaaaaay too much sour cream (next time I would order on the side or just a little) because it made the fry bread a little soggy, especially by the end. But overall it was very good and I finished the whole thing (which is really quite large) -- but $14.00!!! Seems a bit pricey to me for just a taco -- also the beef taco is only $13 -- so wasn't sure why the meat taco was less (unless they were going by the number of ingredients but meat is surely more expensive than beans?) I would have guessed I waited less than 5 minutes for my food on a busy Saturday evening. I ordered the beef taco with my choice of meat being green chili. it was a very large meal that you could potentially split in two. If you choose the green chili option, be warned it has a little kick to it. I would equate its potency to a 2 out of 10 on a Thai spice scale (I apologize, that's the only scale I know of). This place is legit - owned and operated by Tohono O'odham Nation - you order at the counter and they bring out the food to your table. I got the Vegetarian Taco - a HUGE fry bread (the size of a small pizza) filled with refried beans, green chili strips, onions, sour cream, shredded cheese, and lettuce. Yummy! Each bite had a good chunk of chewy and crispy fry bread mixed with the cool lettuce and warm beans, a perfect mix of textures and flavors. When I opened up the wrapping, I thought I'll never finish it because it was so big. But I took bite after delicious bite, and before long, it was gone. We also got a grilled sweet corn from the daily specials menu - probably the sweetest, most delicious corn I've ever had. Finally, I had just enough room to share a honey fry bread - hot fry bread drizzled with honey - for dessert. The first bites are a little chewy, but after the fry bread cools, it becomes crispy so you get all the textures. No frills here, just excellent food. Stopped in while in town for the CFP semifinal game and was blown away by how good and busy Fry Bread House was. I ordered from the friendly cashier and waited a short time for my ultimate taco without beans. The spices in the beef stew and the fry bread itself make this taco stand out. A combination of chiles and other flavors let you know you are in the Southwest. The fry bread itself is an amazing texture - light, airy and a little bit crispy that is way better than any tortilla, even hand made. Both the red and green salsas further enhance the taste. It can be messy so I recommend eating it the way it's wrapped and gradually peeling the paper back or using a knife and fork. This was an enjoyable and authentic experience that felt like eating in my best Native American friend's home. Can't come to Phoenix and not try a Navajo taco. I've always wanted to eat Native American cuisine but never remotely had a chance to until I took a work trip here. Inside is smallish with enough tables to allow a good number of people to dine in. But, the space isn't large enough to contain the amount of people that probably want to eat here given the awards and accolades this place earned. James Beard and Best of Phoenix come to mind. Aside from that there are Native American portraits and/or paintings on the walls, along with clippings from media about the restaurant's success. Service was super friendly, welcoming, pleasant, and happy to provide. A couple of items that were possibly forgotten or slow to come out, were brought to the table immediately after. We ordered quite a bit of food; combo fry bread, hominy stew with chumuth, beef fry bread, ultimate fry bread, powdered sugar fry bread, and honey fry bread. Everything tasted great, didn't really need additional seasoning either. The fry bread held a decent texture under all the toppings. I had the combo one which is meat, cheese, and beans. The lettuce sort of killed it but might as well find some health benefit in there lol. The hominy stew was terrific as well, almost like a corn tortilla in a cup with large chunks of beef. The chumuth was like a tortilla of sorts but a bit chewier. Not bad but not overly amazing. The desert fry breads were also great. It took around 10 minutes to make but came out warm and fresh. I ate mine like a burrito and it was messy but delicious and exactly what I wanted. The combination of the fry bread and the wet birria was the perfect combo. No line when I went around noon but there was a long line when I left around 1pm. This location is one of the "original" Fry Bread location in Phoenix and at one time won a James Beard award. It is still Native-owned and operated and for our final meal in AZ we wanted to eat Fry Bread again. The outside retains all of its original wear and charm but the inside has been remodeled. We got 3 pieces with different orders and all of them were a little different in size and texture. The worst was one of them was very oily but the other two were fine. The ultimate taco with red chile beef was so good. I've never been a big fan of fry bread because of the texture/heaviness, but this fry bread was perfect. The pork was hearty and had a little kick to it. The size of the taco was was pretty large as I could only finish half. Tried a couple- ground beef, bean and cheese but the green chili beef was the clear winner in my opinion! Shredded type beef in green sauce- almost puts you in the mind of chicken or pork chili verde in flavor but yummier! The fry bread was perfect- it was fluffy and had a nice bite-best part is it wasn't greasy like some other places! Service was pleasant and quick! Disappointing Return to a Phoenix Classic I was born and raised in Phoenix and have been coming to The Fry Bread House since the old days. It used to be the place for a sopapilla or a good fry bread taco. I stopped by recently and ordered the Ultimate Taco with a small soda -- nearly $19! I was shocked. Worse, the taco was huge but completely mushy. The filling soaked through the fry bread, turning it into a soggy mess. It would be so much better to serve two smaller fry breads with the taco filling instead of one oversized portion that falls apart. Sad to see such a longtime favorite lose its touch.
