For a beverage, I had a pre-concert cocktail of a Poblano Escobar (Mexican gin + limoncello + pineapple + lime + basil + poblano). Great bites and great sips! While the blue crab flautas definitely tasted of the sea, my favorite bite was that spicy tuna ceviche. It was so good. I ended up eating the whole bowl with a spoon. Yum. We were attending a conference nearby and craving some Mexican food we decided to on Chico Malo. We ordered the Beef Birria flautas and the wife went with Halibut cerviche, which she throughly enjoyed, unfortunately my flautas were more like enchilada with a blue corn tortilla that you couldn't cut with a steak knife, not what I was expecting in flautas. While the service was friendly and attentive the food left 4 of the 6 guest dissatisfied with the care and quality of their dish. Extremely disappointing experience We went to Chico Malo for happy hour and ordered several items directly from the happy-hour menu. The photo I've attached was actually taken during our visit because I was planning on doing a review of their happy-hour items, so I happened to have a picture of the menu showing exactly what we were looking at. For our last item, I pointed directly to the "Chicharron de Ribeye" on the happy-hour menu, which is clearly listed at $12. I told our server that I didn't know how to pronounce the name, pointed to the item, and she confirmed the order. We ate our food, and when the check came, I noticed we had been charged $60 for a ribeye. I immediately explained that I had ordered from the happy-hour menu and specifically pointed to the $12 Chicharron de Ribeye. The server brought the happy-hour menu over and insisted that wasn't what I ordered and that I had ordered the regular ribeye. This was incredibly frustrating because I literally pointed to the $12 item on the menu when ordering. We had already ordered multiple things from happy hour, so why would I suddenly order a $60 entrée without being told that was what I was ordering? The biggest issue wasn't even the misunderstanding -- it was how it was handled afterward. Rather than acknowledging the obvious confusion and trying to find a reasonable solution, we were told there was nothing they could do and were left paying $60 for something we never intended to order. And honestly, the food wasn't impressive enough to make us want to come back anyway. If you're in the area, I'd honestly recommend going to Blanco around the corner instead. The food and overall experience are much better, and I'd rather spend my money there. After this experience, we definitely won't be making the drive back to Chico Malo. Me and some friends came in for dinner on a Saturday night with no reservation. Luckily, we found some seats at the bar. We were greeted right away. It is restaurant week so we ordered off of that menu. I got the Elote and a meat salad for apps. Then I got the chili rellano as my main. My friends got the Birria and chicken Tinga. And for dessert, we got Tres Leche cake. Everything was very delicious. The restaurant is very clean but a little dim. There was a slight mishap with our appetizers, but it was corrected right away. A friend and I came here before an event at the basketball arena. It was pretty busy, but were able to get two seats at the bar right away. Their drink menu has some classics like margaritas and old fashioneds, as well as specials that are pretty unique and have some unique flavor combos. I had the Mango y Chile and my friend got the Mojavito. We started with chips and salsa and got both salsas. I enjoyed both but the green salsa was to die for and I wanted to put it on everything! I ordered the blue crab enchiladas and cannot recommend them enough. There was a ton of crab and the cheese ratio was perfect. The beans and rice and toppings were all complimentary of the enchiladas. My friend got the birria flautas and brussel sprouts. I did not taste them but he said they were really good. My only complaint is that our server was not super attentive. She checked on us when our food came but never came back to see if we wanted another drink or to refill our water. It looked like she was helping make drinks for the well, but she ignored our side of the bar for the most part. No biggie, but just wanted to make note of it. Chico Malo has some real talent in the kitchen but the service will test your patience.. Went with my best friend, food came out promptly which I'll give them credit for, but everything around the food was a struggle. Getting the waiter's attention took minutes at a time, before we could even get drinks or silverware, and minutes is minutes too long when you're just trying to get a drink. Prices were about what you'd expect for a near upscale spot, no surprise there. The duck breast al pastor was the standout, I couldn't even tell it was duck, and the presentation was well put together. Dorados de papa were a great start to the meal, crispy and well done. The horchata was really good too. Pork verde was the only dish that didn't hit, it was decent but nothing I'd order again. Here's the problem.. the service was terrible. For a restaurant in downtown Phoenix, in an area packed with Mexican food options, that kind of service is hard to overlook. The food, especially that duck al pastor, deserves a visit. I was invited here by a colleague, and had zero expectations on my meal. My experience quickly went to 100, after sitting down, having great service from Dante and then tasting the food! It started out simply enough with chips and salsa. We had a choice between salsa verde and rojo, with a smoky flavor. It was delicious. Then, when Dante suggested I order the quesobirria tacos, I was hooked! This is definitely an upscale eatery, yet these tacos were straight from a street-corner taqueria. The gf and inane t here for date night during restaurant week. The atmosphere is low key but still very intimate with list of hi top half booth seating and bar seating. We started with the Elote and roasted beet salad. The elote had so much flavor but a bit too much sauce. The beet was good with whipped ricotta. Next we had chicken flautas and pozole. The flautas were crispy but still soft on the inside, not overcooked. I loved the guac and pickled red onions. The pozole was much thicker than I'm used plus it was spicier than normal. The pozole came with chips and warm tortillas beside the normal cabbage, onions n radish. The chips were a nice touch because it was almost like a dip. And they help offset the spice. It was almost too spicy but we couldn't stop eating it! Our mains were the Pollo Tinga and Birria tacos. The birria tacos were build your oyen with all the usual toppings. Birria was soft and tender. The tinga,, which I've never had before had so much flavor. The sauce was very close to a mole with cheeses chicken and potatoes. This was the best dish I had that night. The restaurant week menu came with a drink as well. We went the marg on the rocks. The drinks were a tequila forward and I like that. We saved a few portions of the birria and tinga to save room for dessert. We took those home with a fresh bag of chips. Our server Senait was so sweet to offer the bag of chips. Great leftovers btw. The desserts were great. We chose both options of course, the Gansito and Espresso Tres Leches. The Gansito was a soft vanilla cake in a chocolate shell on a vanilla bean bavarian cream whipped sauce. The sauce complimented the cake perfectly. The tres leches definitely was espresso taste forward. This the vanilla bean with cocoa cream was a good pairing with the espresso tres leches. I met a friend here for lunch recently and found it to be a pleasant place. We were seated on the patio outside near the entrance and it was not terribly busy or loud-which I appreciated. Peering inside, that might be where the real party is...louder music, lively atmosphere. I'd assume that the patio can hang too, but on a Tuesday mid-day it is pretty tame. Service was attentive-perhaps more than necessary. I can appreciate being checked on and not forgotten, but maybe just a little less than happened during our visit. Perhaps our server was new or under utilized, but it felt like we were confirming how everything was ok pretty often. The seats in the dining room were hard and metal and we weren't up for that. For food, we ordered the chips with green salsa, Beef Birria, Carne Asada Plate. Food was decent. Salsa Verde and Chips were great. Birria was flavorful but everything else was just sufficient. For drinks we the Aye Papi and PECADO. My husband enjoyed his Aye Papi. I survived the PECADO but it was not my style. PECADO which is suppose to be patron silver + pomegranate tamarindo + orange juice + citrus for $14. On this occasion this drink wasn't cold and I did not enjoy it. All in all, It was a decent experience. I would come back for Happy Hour or if I was in the area for another event. Went for a friends birthday. Honestly I was not super impressed. Menu was very limited and drink menu was so-so. For a downtown restaurant the prices were very fair, though portions were somewhat lacking. The beef enchiladas were tasty, but the balance of sauce to actual food was a little off for my taste. The birria flautas were not real birria, as confirmed by my several Latino friends in attendance. Our service was a little slow, it took a long time to get our order in and no complimentary chips and salsa is always disappointing. I tried the shrimp aguachile and the tres leches; both were good. I was surprised by the tres leches presentation, which looked more like three small donuts with ice cream. Every time I have eaten at Chico Malo I have enjoyed the food as has everyone I have dined with here. I think it's delicious! It's def overpriced, but it fits the restaurant's vibe and in this location it is to be expected. Happy hour prices are not bad, but portions are very small. Regular menu portions are plentiful, however. While the food is yummy imo, the drinks are meh. What is lacking for me at Chico Malo is the service. It's pretty slow even when they are not busy and overall I would describe it as absent. It also isn't particularly friendly. This is not make or break it for me but it is at the point that it stands out, I would say. The restaurant inside is cool though! And I love the music. Unfortunately, Chico Malo's enchilada order comes with only two medium-size enchiladas and nothing else. I was so lucky to order chips because I would've been completely unsatisfied with this visit. The flavor of my green/red enchiladas was great, however it was missing that extra touch. Chíco Malo prioritizes decoration and presentation, over quantity. However, I believe in a balance of quantity, quality, and presentation. The food isn't the cheapest as it's in a nice location of DT Phoenix so I'm expecting a little more bang for my buck. Service was decent, out server was chill guy. He thoroughly explained the menu and gave us good recommendations. Another great time at ChicoMalo with friends. Was invited to the suns game and this place just continues to do all the little things right from point of entry the vibe is perfect. Not to much to be over the top just enough to be comfortable and feel like you're at somewhere special. Friends arrived and we smashed the trio&chips. I should have errored and shared with my wife as I forgot how large the portions are here but I messed up and ordered way too much and well at it all! The molcahete was very good and pretty spicy. Only negative was it was so temperature hot it was hard to make a taco but I mean hot food definitely not a bad thing. Wife's barbacoa was on another level we should have just split that and our friends as always crush the pork verde shank. If you've never been this place is a must. I went in with a group for a late lunch on 8/4/26. There were customers sitting at the bar, and no visible employees. After a few minutes of standing at the front I saw what I believed to be the bartender walking around. She ignored our group standing at the host stand, and walked away from us. I followed and asked if they were still open, and she said yes. Then turned away and ignored us. I went searching for another employee, and someone in the kitchen went to to back to the back to locate someone. This entire ordeal had been going on for over 10 minutes at this point. An employee finally came, and I again asked if they're still serving food. I was told yes and we were seated. We were handed menus and the employee disappeared. After another 10 minutes or so of no employee contact, my group got up and left. I have eaten here before during normal lunch hours and not had any issues. The food is great. But clearly they're not equipped to remain open during off hours. And the bartender who was on duty clearly needs to find a new line of work. To begin our birthday weekend getaway, my boyfriend and I went to Chico Malo for dinner and it's a place that I would definitely consider going again! I made a reservation at 5:30pm, and we were seated quickly. The ambiance was lively yet intimate with dim lighting that fit with the Mexican-inspired aesthetic that invited people to party and socialize after a hard day of work. We have a bowl of chips with two different salsas and guacamole as a complimentary appetizer, so we solely ordered our main dishes since we knew from the size of the appetizer would be enough to satisfy us both. Although, I had a smaller appetite than usual that evening, so I tried their Dorados de Papa- a shareable dish, but just the right amount that I needed to get me full, but not painfully so. As for my partner, he ordered the Sea Molcajete that comes with octopus, shrimp, clams, and more to make for one stunning dish. It's a large meal, so if you consider trying it, you better come in ravenous. The server we had was very nice, checked up on us frequently, and even offered to take away a drink I had ordered and ended up not liking (my boyfriend drank it for me). I am not saying it is a poorly made dish, their version of mole is fruity and tangy. When I saw it in the menu I was expecting a chocolate mole rather than a fruity one. After having an amazing lunch the first time dining here with Mika as our server we decided we wanted to go back for dinner, wrong decision we quickly came to find out! My husband got the pork verde & it came out looking like something from the Flintstones era... not attractive at all! Didn't think the presentation was appealing at all! I had the beets salad again with 3 prawns added @ $6 a piece, the salad just wasn't a wow factor either & the goat cheese didn't taste like last time! It was just blah like no consistency in the preparation with the menu. We definitely chose to not have desert, we were just ready for our check! As we're staring at our dirty plates waiting endlessly for our check Chloe then appears, gives us our bill yet walks away empty handed! Sorry but I didn't know that service ends once the check is placed on the table! We ended up waiting so long we went over our validated 2 hours by 5 minutes because Chloe was nowhere to be found! Normally I'm a 20% - 25% tipper depending upon the whole dining experience but not this time! While staying in Downtown Phoenix we got to eat at a couple good places but Chico Malo was by far one of the best. We went Saturday evening and even though it was busy they were able to sit us very quickly. Inside the restaurant has a really good aesthetic and cool vibe. I started off with the Oaxacan Old Fashioned, which is made with Mezcal, and was one of the best of these type of cocktails I had. We then ordered the Chicharron de Ribeye Gucamole which was super tasty and came with lots of Ribeye. I came in for lunch today for the first time and loved it! My friend and I shared the elote appetizer as well the halibut ceviche verde. Both were really good We both ordered the beet salad. It was amazing and presented beautifully. The rest of the menu looked really good to I can't wait to come back.
