If you are looking for upmarket Mexican food, with a great drink on the side, my favorite go to spot in downtown Phx is casa corazon... they have a good menu and fo everything well, from grey Baja tacos, in true Baja style to chili rellenos, fajitas and oh my god the salsa bar!! To die for. Chips are gratuit. Service is prompt and knowledgeable. The entrance is via the kitchen as this was once a home, now converted into a great eatery. So you come in the side door to the dining room . Wait staff all greet you and guide you to the dining room, festooned with roses and talavera tiles. It's not kitschy, just gorgeous. The menu is ample and you can't go wrong with anything. The initial refrito dip, tho yummy, has pork. But they have the best, the absolute best black beans!! Try them just for a change. You'll be converted. The dining area is small but cozy and beautifully done. So enjoy!! read more

I'm so glad we finally went to try Casa Corazon. We met with a friend visiting from out of town during lunch, and everyone absolutely loved it. The restaurant is inside of an old brick home with wood interior and warm colors. The service was good-- friendly and food came out at a good pace, we were checked on regularly. We ordered an appetizer and then entrees from the lunch menu. The aguachile appetizer is SO good. It's bright, fresh, and has a lot of flavor in the green sauce. It reminds me of a ceviche type dish due to its raw butterflied shrimp that is marinated in the house made chile serrano & cilantro citrus sauce. It was awesome. We were also given free chips & house made bean dip. I ordered the mixed two item plate with a chile rellano and taco corazon (grilled taco dipped in a red chile sauce, stuffed with shredded beef & melted cheese. Topped with grilled onions). The black beans and rice is also tasty. I tried a bite of the other dishes, and I also really liked the brightly colored spinach & cheese enchiladas with pink sauce ( signature beet sauce). We found this place on Phoenix eater so we decided to try something new, so we popped in for some drinks and snacks. We stopped in about five for happy hour. The restaurant has a small bar of three seats to enjoy some drinks.. initially we were just going to have margaritas for six dollars during happy hour but decided to have guacamole as well for $10 on happy hour. Guacamole was excellent and came with a bean dip. To complement, our guacamole and chips we checked out the salsa bar. The salsa bar has over six choices of salsa. One of my favorite salsas was hibiscus. We enjoyed our quick happy hour so much that we hope to come back for dinner as I see Mole is on the menu. The staff was super friendly and attentive. I hear that they have open a second venue not too far from the original place. They have an event venue. Their original place is in a former church. We were there at happy hour so we ordered margaritas and tacos off of that menu. The margaritas tasted scratch made and the tacos were awesome! The Corazon taco is a must try. What a terrific southern Mexican focus! So delicious! The staff were very friendly and welcoming. I had the Azteca Tinga which was a perfect southern blend of chicken, rice, and black beans and I chose the house made corn tortillas. The very first bite was an immediate taste of legitimate authentic southern Mexican blend and just plain delicious. There is also a featured salsa bar with different delicious flavors. My wife and daughter had the flautas which weren't your typical idea of flautas bought anywhere else. I took a bite of my wife's who ordered beef. They were hand rolled, either lightly fried or baked. They weren't greasy at all and served enchilada style. The beef was tender and could easily be cut with a fork and practically melted in your mouth. Magnificent. I had the Casa Corazon margarita which was the perfect blend of corazon tequila, lemon juice, Cointreau, with fresh lime, grapefruit, on a salted brim. Our server had a terrific smile, so friendly and attentive. The restaurant got a tad warm once the sun shifted overhead (July in Arizona). The restaurant is a remodel of a much older Phoenix building. Reservations accepted and highly recommended when our weather gets nice because there was also outdoor seating. Thank you! Even for a party of people who do not love spicy, we were able to find something for us. The signature sauce on the food was a bit spicy for us, but that did not deter from the flavor. First of all I called beforehand cause we were a party of six to see if we can get a reservation or be put on the waitlist and the lady said that was not possible. We arrived there and the woman asked if I had Reservations. That threw me off since I was told Reservations were not allowed. She then said if I wanted to be put on a waitlist which was six parties long, but there was nobody there so apparently these were called in. Already a crappy start. She asked if we wanted to sit outside with the misters and I said yes they set us up quite promptly with that. I ordered their signature dish, Corazón tacos, which were absolutely disgusting. They were supposed to have beef inside, but was super fatty and it tasted like pork. My daughter ordered the chicken fajita which came with little pieces of chicken that looked like they were made out of rubber. They were stringy and they were gross. When I told the waitress she took it back but still charged my daughter for the rice that was on the plate even though she left that on the table and my daughter did not eat that either. The only thing that I thought was decent was their lemonade since it's freshly squeezed other than that, it was pretty dismal. The waitress we finally did Get was very good. We found such a nice little Mexican food spot. The entrance leads you in with the kitchen on your direct left and the dining room/seating to the right. The atmosphere was very relaxed and welcoming. Great spot for family or a date night. The staff were all kind and professional, all the food and drinks came out fairly quickly. 5 Star - hibiscus salsa was amazing. Unique and unlike anything we've had before. There is a decent amount of heat on the back end, it subtly comes. We put this just about all the food we had. 5 Star - Margarita Flight. The size of the drinks and the amount of alcohol was surprisingly fantastic. The base flavors came across as an aguas frescas which provided more depth of flavor. Our favorite was the hibiscus, then the cucumber jalapeño and last strawberry. 4 Star - The taco corazon: the shredded beef was a bit sweet but full of flavor. The grilled onions on top were a nice touch. This would be a five star if the taco were crispy. I really enjoyed the marinade on the Al Pastor taco was. It wasn't goopy and the balance of pineapple and onions made this an above average taco. 4 Star - The Chiles En Nogada was almost a 3 Star. It was really good, with a great amount of flavorful pork. We would have liked if they add more dried fruit, to better balance the amount of pork. The sauce was perfectly sweet, but we would have liked it to be a little less grainy, so blend it for longer. 4 Star - The white rice was sweet and something neither of us have tasted before. The rice had pineapple, corn and maybe a little bit of carrot. So simple but really well done. 4 Star - The guacamole was not the best we have had, but it was better than most restaurants. It was freshly made and there were great size pieces of avocado too. 3.5 Star - The tacos de chicharron. The fried pork skin rinds were wonderfully crispy but they were lacking in flavor a bit. I was not a fan of the house paste tomatoes. I was so excited for this but the soft corn tortilla with crispy pork rinds and heavy amount of paste just didn't work for me. Overall we were very impressed with the uniqueness of their food and drinks, as well as the quality overall. We will be absolutely be back to try more items on their menu! 3*** = Good but no separation from similar restaurants 4**** = Set themselves a part with unique food and I want to go back. 5*****= You have to go out of your way and make a special trip to try the deliciousness that is there! read more

This is an authentic Mexican restaurant located in Phoenix. This was my first time trying this restaurant, and I was not disappointed. They have a salsa bar where you can try a bunch of different salsas included with your meal, and happy hour drinks. I got the house margarita and found it to be quite strong. I ordered the pink sauce chicken enchiladas, and they were pretty good. (To be honest, I couldn't tell the difference between the pink sauce and the red sauce enchiladas I usually get) The traditional rice and beans were good as well. We sat outside on the little patio, and although there isn't too much seating out there, we really enjoyed the ambience outside with the trees and mood lighting. The staff was friendly and our food came out reasonably fast. We didn't make any reservations and came around 5pm on a Friday; we got seated right away. It was a delight to eat at Casa Corazon yesterday with my family. Every single person raved about how great the food was. 2 of the family had different tacos so that means 6 tacos received the excellent rating for taste. I had the chili relleno which was different than any other I have had in Phoenix and I know I will be back just for this. My husband had another similar dish with poblano chilies and that was just as good. There was just the right amount of heat in the food which allowed you to really appreciate the food without needed to drink a carton of milk. Out waiter was excellent as well -- he knew how to be available without being annoying and was very pleasant. Everything about Casa Corazon was blah. My first impression was that this is a confused restaurant. You walk in to what is basically the kitchen, surrounded by stainless steel appliances, workstations, and a self serve salsa bar. None of this is bad, it's just more fitting for a street taco joint. The service was below average, like eating at an Applebees, with menus thrown willy-nilly in front of us and no attention to detail. We also showed up with reservations and were made to wait for ten minutes so they could get a table ready for us. The food was fine, but I was expecting something more for a restaurant with an Eater recommendation. Not sure how this slipped through on Phoenix's 38 best restaurants. I know this isn't exactly a food town, but wow! Besides the generally confused aesthetic, the dining room was very cool. There's a lot of potential here, but there's a lot of room to get there. Very good food and drinks. This quaint spot looks small from the outside but is pretty spacious inside. There is also a nice sized patio area for outdoor seating. I chose to dine inside where I would be close to the salsa bar, which had a variety of salsa's to choose from. The only one I wanted to try that I couldn't was the the pico de gallo because the container was empty. I asked one of the staff members if there was more and she said she would check. Though I checked a few times for more after asking it was still remained empty. As I was leaving once done, I saw that the pico was replenished. Complimentary chips and salsa were placed on the table. I ordered the Spicy Margarita off the happy hour menu...it was tastey and a little spicy. The tacos were a nice size and filling. My server who was also the bartender suggested the shrimp taco which I did order. It was really good after I added one of the salsa's to give it some flavor. I think the veggies that are an ingredient in the shrimp taco are bland and watery. The house taco and chicken tacos tasted great without any salsa but the right salsa enhances those tacos. We arrived at 1215 on Sun afternoon and it wasn't yet busy which was good. We ordered Chile en Nogada and Camarones Culichi. Before I race about the good, let me tell you about the salsa bar! There were multiple types of salsa ranging from regular pico de gallo to pineapple to hibiscus and a creamy green. The winner for me was a tie between the hibiscus and creamy green--absolutely phenomenal flavors that are completely unexpected on the salsa bar. The chile en nogada was like a meaty warm fruity salad in a pepper. Pomegranate seeds on top a nice crunch and the pork was a savory balance against the sweet fruits! The camarones culichi was a delicious avocado cream sauce enrobing grilled shrimp and covered with melted cheese. Simple flavors that don't overpower the tastebuds. The rice was a white rice w veggies w lite salt. Also came w homemade tortillas. (Note to self: great dessert if you just have a side of honey and butter!) The nopales were served grilled w onions--the perfect char with just the right ratio of onions so it didn't become the star. Ok, the food here is amazing! Let's start with the salsa bar - 10 different salsas and all so flavorful and delicious. I could have just eaten the chips and salsa and my all natural skinny marg and would have rated it a 10! I had their signature Shrimp dish with green sauce - wow is all I have to say. If you're still on the fence, come on a Tuesday when all tacos are $4, including the delectable al pastor, carne asada, and the birria-style corazon taco. Came with our work crew for a birthday celebration. A few of the group had been here before and it was new for the rest of us, including me. There were 8 in our group and we made a reservation prior to arriving. Nice place and interesting to enter through the kitchen, which I loved and slowly looked around! Service was quick and efficient and as we waited for a couple of others to join us, everyone ordered drinks and chips with salsa and bean dip were delivered. The salsa was hot...according to this person, who is admittedly a whimp with spicy! but the bean dip was good, flavorful and not spicy at all. The chips were colored and freshly made, great crisp and not too salty. Meals ordered were the lunch special enchilada with chicken, the Tinga Empanada, a couple of the lunch special taco plates, quesadilla with chicken and a side of rice. I am including pictures of everyone's dishes, which all came with rave reviews for the freshness, quality of the food and of course the amazing tastes. I ordered the Cochinita Empanada, which was amazing! The crust was like no other empanada I've had, light and crispy and just a good flavor. The pork inside was full and flavorful and tender! So good! I also ordered a side of the rice and was expecting Spanish rice but they serve more of a white rice with seasoning and corn and veggies. The dish also came with a salad covered with pickled red onion. The empanada had crema on top and the whole dish was so good! I actually took half home for the wife to have some.
