The drinks, service, and atmosphere were the highlights at Casa 16. The Espresso Martini was perfectly balanced. The other two drinks were seasonal. Every drink we tried was phenomenal, the service was excellent, and the atmosphere was perfect for enjoying the meal. The salsa had a unique smoky flavor that I really enjoyed, without being spicy. The guacamole tasted fresh and had a great balance of flavors. I added a little salt, but otherwise really enjoyed it. The taco plate was good overall, with the quesabirria and cochinita pibil being my favorites. The pickled red onions really balanced the sweetness of the pibil. Both had good flavor and stood out from the bunch. The asada was a bit dry and could have used more seasoning, while the rice and beans were bland. The Chile en Nogada was just okay. You could taste the fresh ingredients, but the dish didn't stand out for me. We finished with the flan, which was a little too custardy for my taste. Went for late lunch the other day. Great little spot with clean interior and lots of tables. Had a mezcal cocktail to start which was terrific. Followed that up with the goat and wow what flavor. It was amazing and easily would go back for this. Service was good but could see if busy they'd struggle. Maybe was off hours. The main thing I hope to see changed was the salsa. It really was watery and lacking spice and flavor. I was surprised when I asked if it was the normal look and our waitress said yes. Came here with my mom cause I saw a tik tok, and it looked great. We walked in- wasn't really greeted just asked how many and sat fast. They gave us water, and chips with salsa right away. They took 5minutes to take our drink order,and then another 10minutes to get our food order which we still didn't get our drinks. I pointed that out and he apologized and went to get them right away. Then it took them 20 minutes for us to get our food. There was only two men servers. I will say the horchata aqua I was good but too much ice for me. Though not on the menu, he made a hibiscus margarita for my friend. She ordered the chile en nogada and was blown away by the amazing and complex flavors. Every time I come here, the owner, Ulises, has added something new to enhance the ambiance. This time, he added a wonderful outdoor fountain with the beautiful sound of water splashing off a copper pipe. He also added a large tile topped family table in the main dining room. I met a friend for brunch and loved this place. I was busy catching up so I didn't get many pictures. The restaurant is really cute and I loved the decor. When we got there it wasn't very busy. It was nice to have al pastor with chicken instead of the usual pork and these were very nicely spiced. The carnitas were also excellent. We recently tried this new restaurant with a party of 7, and everyone ordered a different dish. Overall, 6 out of the 7 meals were very good and everyone enjoyed their food. One dish unfortunately wasn't great because the garlic flavor was very overpowering. The service was good and attentive during our visit, although we did go during the week, so I can't speak on how the service is during busy weekends. Girlfriend and I came to this place 2 hrs before a comedy show excited because it looks good. An hour and 20 minutes after ordering (waiter didn't write down our order, which is always infuriating) guy came over to ask us what we ordered. Clearly it had not been put into the kitchen. My husband and I visited Casa 16 for Arizona Restaurant week on 5/23/2026. I ordered off the AZ Restaurant Week menu. I got the aguachules which the menu says they include scallops but it was just shrimp no scallops, the enchiladas as the second entree, I asked for all chicken with mole, red and suiza sauce and they gave me green instead of suiza sauce, and for dessert the churros. The aguachiles were okay, enchiladas also okay but you can tell they used dark chicken meat because it had a different taste to it, the churros were deliciouand the best part of my order. My husband got the Mojarra Frita; which was delicious but it was not drained after they fried it and the side on the plate was oily. I did not tell our server Israel R about the mix up on the enchiladas sauce because it seemed like anything we asked for was bothersome to him. He was extremely attentive to the table next to us which we later found out they must be related or be close friends because he hugged one of them when they were leaving. This was quiet upsetting because he should not treat people he knows well and other clients poorly. The service was probably the worst service we've had at a restaurant; especially because it was not busy at all there was only about 3 or 4 tables being occupied with his "friends" being the biggest party of 4 all other tables had 2 people. I'm not sure if he treated us differently because we ordered of the "special" menu which is absurd, because the point of that menu is to bring new people in to try their food. With that service it makes me not want to go back. Mind you this is not an upscale restaurant the area it's in is kind of sketchy; which is not an issue but with servers like Israel R it makes me not want to go back. I was taken to CASA 16 today for my 78th birthday. I'm 6th generation Arizonian so my friends know I'm picky for authentic. By far best Mexican food I have had outside of Mexico. Menus , water, fresh chips & salsa delivered with a smile and offer to help with selections.
