Our 1st meal when we arrived to Arizona and was not satisfied. We stayed at the Home2Suites Hilton so I loved the convenience of this restaurant being walking distance from the hotel. When we arrived, we weren't greeted immediately and we stood there waiting to be seated but come to find out, you seat yourself Ask for the complimentary chips and salsa to start--love the 3 different salsas they provide with the chips. We ordered the Al pastor tacos and 2 carne asada burritos but I think they gave us al pastor burritos instead The tacos were definitely better than the burritos. This place has the only cocktails that I genuinely crave. There are so many different flavors and spirits that you can't go wrong with trying (at least) a couple. Even when we sit outside on the couches the bartenders will bring us our drinks if it's not too busy. I really enjoy the outdoor area because there is a lot of space for larger groups to mingle without it feeling like they are taking over the entire area. The indoor atmosphere is a mix between cozy and dive. It's brighter than a normal dive bar but you still have the option to play pool and hang out. There is a limited menu but the food HITS. Tacos and burritos. So good. Trust. Added plus: dog friendly! This hurts to write, because this was a neighborhood gem for me. I came in today, a place I have loved since inception. When it first opened, you would see one of the co-owners around often. He was a very nice guy and the staff was always exceptional. My favorite, was the woman who ran the food area. She was kind, compassionate, and felt like extended family every time I saw her. Today, I stopped in, expecting to see her. Instead I see two young people behind the bar, one manning the register and the other cooking. I rarely ever saw anyone beside her cooking.. so this was odd. Turns out, she is no longer employed with Green Woodpecker and boy is it painfully obvious. I ordered chips and a bean and cheese, something I have definitely ordered here many times before.. the chips, burnt so badly you can see burnt spots all over them. The burrito, full of liquid soup for beans. You could literally turn it upside down and the entire contents would pour out. I confronted the server about the quality of the food. The entire time I was talking, she was trying not to laugh. I said, "I see you smiling as I'm telling you this, it's clear you don't care." Her response, ya I mean our fryer is overheating so there is nothing I can do about it. As if it was a funny joke that people are wasting money on food they are unable to cook properly. First and foremost, she does not belong in a customer facing role that involves customer service. Second, I will no longer be returning to or referring anyone to this establishment. The Green Woodpecker is a craft beer and taco bar concept that was founded by the people behind Gadzooks Enchiladas & Soup and Wren House Brewing Co. These are establishments that I frequent often and enjoy. So my expectations were somewhat high coming here and I wasn't disappointed. This place is pretty chill and I enjoyed my Friday night here. The menu here is quite simple - street tacos, burritos and chips & salsa (they also have vegetarian options for protein). Green Woodpecker has a number of craft beers on tap or you can grab a bottle of wine or canned beer to-go. Sometimes simple and delicious is all that you need for a relaxing evening out. Seating is both indoor and outdoor (with TV screens) and the customer service is fantastic. The Green Woodpecker is a very clean and aesthetically pleasing bar. They have a wide variety of beers and they even give samples. They also sell burritos and tacos; note that the tacos are only sold after 4pm on weekdays and 2pm on weekends. They also participate in taco Tuesday where all the tacos are $1 cheaper. The service was friendly and knowledgeable. They also have several wall coolers for any take home alcohol that you would like. Also, the bathroom is definitely the most swankiest bathrooms I've ever seen in a restaurant. I got a beer and two tacos which cost me $17. Overall, this is just a really nice place to hang out at; I love how there's different types of furniture both indoors and outdoors. Others seem to love this place but my specific experience was so awful I will never return. Specifically, I had the asada burrito. I've had better at Chipotle. The filling was gristly beef with some runny spicy cheese. I could not discern any beans though that was listed as a filling. The whole thing is fried/grilled. There was no attempt to 'dress it up' with a splash of crema or a little lettuce on the platter. I was supposed to receive the (hot) salsa on the side. It did not come. SO average and for me, awful. Though my husband and I ordered essentially at the same time though separately (we needed separate checks for business reasons), my burrito took so long to arrive my husband was finished eating three tacos before I got mine. It's as if it's one appetizer after another instead of a dinner place. The patio is full of loung-y couches and a couple of huge tables. Again seems like best for snacking. We chose to go inside for a proper table. The table wobbled. Seriously, this place takes casual to a new height. This is a fabulous new midtown bar/taqueria/flower shop run by the owners of Wren House Brewing. The vibe/decor, name & floral merchandise pays homage to the former inhabitants of the space- a flower shop. The tap list reflects the Wren House heritage -- mostly Wren House beers, with some others sprinkled in, some wine and a cider. A group of us came in recently to check them out for an indoor happy hour (shame that they have a beautiful patio and heaters for the cold winter we've had to date). Their website states they take reservations, but it takes some time for them to return a message/confirm the res. It is counter service for beers, and they'll usually deliver your tacos to your table. We sat around their massive wooden table to hang out.... The other tables didn't really have the space for our large group of 10. They definitely can accommodate larger groups when it's not freezing out. Their beertender was super kind to provide us with fresh house chips and salsa as most of us bought a couple of tacos. Dark red salsa = SPICY (for this gringa), green and light red = doable. Tacos are Al Pastor and also SPICY. But adding some green salsa made it doable. There's a veggie option too. The masa is freshly made and cooked to order (can they sell those individually?!?). A great space and very relaxed atmosphere! All of the beers I had were quite tasty. The tacos lived up to their reputation as well! I enjoyed the asada the most. I appreciated that all the tacos were charred well from the trompo and had crispy edges. I am very critical of pastor so while this is not the best pastor I've had, it definitely ranks high in the valley for me. The chips were thick and crispy and the salsas were good. Since the new owners have decided it needed to be a cocktail bar, the vibe feels less inviting, the food is not as good (al pastor was fine but wasn't offered chips or salsa), and the happy hour deals aren't the same. I checked their website before going last time and their happy hour looked the same, only to be charged double on my beer when I was notified it was no longer on happy hour. Update your website or don't, I won't be back. It's a shame, this felt like a real neighborhood/after work spot before. Now it's loud touch tunes and hipsters. read more

I found this spot from a general IG search for breweries in my area. The place is super cool and chill. They have a huge big screen TV on the patio which is awesome, especially this time of year. The beer selection is solid and the few I got were perfect for my IPA palate. After seeing a few of the tacos go out I decided to get a few. I got the Pastor and Asada. Great bites and super flavorful. The sauces are awesome and with the freshly made chips, they were even better. I spotted that carrot cake and got a slice to go for later and man it was delicious. I met up with a friend here on a Monday and it was trivia night. Such a fun and relaxing atmosphere with dog-friendly patio. I decided to try one of each taco and they were all delicious, but I agree with the other reviews that the al pastor tacos were the best. I'm a little ashamed to say that I went back and ordered 2 more al pastor tacos! The mushroom tacos were also delicious. My least favorite was actually the carne asada. We also shared a HUGE piece of carrot cake for dessert with the table and my drinks were all tasty. This is a super cute spot downtown. Plenty of bar, communal table and booth seating. We chose the bar and enjoyed watching our delicious mushroom tacos being made! We LOVED the vegan tacos (thank you for a GF/vegan option!) and the chips and salsa. They have a spicy (red), a mild (green) and a (fruity) in the middle. A good $5 beer menu from local and nearby breweries and a decent wine selection ($11/glass). Service was friendly and attentive. This used to be my favorite spot until recently. I refer people there like crazy, meet friends there multiple times in a week until a few weeks ago. The accuracy of the orders went away, their burrito portion shrunk in half but the price remained the same. The woman cooking the food was so kind and friendly. Now every time I go in I'm met with poor attitudes. It's not uncommon to wait 30+ minutes for one burrito to be made. The chips are constantly burnt now. Last night I ordered three burritos and chips, I waited OVER AN HOUR for my food only to get home and realize literally nothing that I paid for was in my bag. I went back 10 minutes before closing and Sarah (the employee with the poorest attitude and customer service skills) immediately says that she will refund my order. No apology, no offer to make it right, it was 9pm and every decent restaurant is closed. I don't want a refund I want what I paid and waited for. She then informs me that "this isnt my fault, you ordered with someone else and she rang it up wrong". My order was not entered wrong and the amount I paid did not match the items that Sarah gave me. I DONT CARE WHO IS AT FAULT- I WANT WHAT I ORDERED AND PAID FOR. Sarah is completely useless for her position. I will never return and will spend the rest of my life telling people to avoid this place at all costs. read more

I visited this restaurant yesterday for Taco Tuesday. I was drawn to the place for the outdoor sitting and advertised dog patio they had. When we got there, we sat outside for about 10 minutes without getting service from the staff. I went inside to finally figure out I had to order inside. This was frustrating but I figured the food could make up in lack of service. It did not. The chips were really good, fresh and hot. However the tacos fell short of flavor. My appreciation for the freshly made tortillas was the highlight of this lunch, but again the tacos lacked flavor and the meat was over cooked. I tried all three, asada, matake, and pastor. The overall vibe of the restaurant was okay. They did play great music, but it was EXTREMELY HOT sitting on the patio. Considering it's over 110 degrees outside, you would think fans/misters would be a requirement for patio settings. Ice would be provided with the water. Dog bowls on the patio with water. There wasn't though, and made my time here very uncomfortable. read more
