Sadly it was a bit lacking here for me. There was little to no interaction from the sushi chefs. They blatantly speak whatever is on their minds with little regards to who understands mandarin or cantonese and how it would effect their meal. The poke tuna was actually nice but mayo/aoili slathered all over it takes away from the light, and refreshing-ness of what it could have been. Clam soup wasnt much to write home about. Bill was average for Japanese i guess. If its super casual and youre not looking for anything in paricular...this is ok. read more

I live right up the street from Sweet Ginger and absolutely love it. The restaurant is consistent with both service and freshness. It's easy to get in and out of, contrary to its same street competitor and also inventive and healthy in a simple way. Atrocious lack of service and the food made me sick. We made a reservation and when we arrived the host seemed to have no recollection that we made a reservation but seated us. The place was about 50% full. We ordered promptly and then shortly after heard the complaints around us from other guests about "where's my dinner, I've been waiting an hour." My appetizer arrived after one hour, then my friend's arrived 30 minutes later and so on. We never ate together as the service was spaced out. The cooks seemed to be fulfilling take out orders ahead of the seated guests. This place has no clue about customer service. At one point the waiter said "everyone is waiting 2 hours" so I asked why did you grant a reservation? Incredibly rude. I guess they get away with it because of the visitors to Sausalito? The food tasted fine, but after becoming ill a few hours later I'd say stay away from this place. read more

I thought I would give this place a second chance. Ugggh, I try so hard to be positive. There is nothing positive about this in fact I felt awful after eating the himachi kamma. The counter has the glass where you can see the fresh fish but it was all fogged up and maybe not even cooling properly? Could not even see the fish! I decided to go with something grilled to be on the safe side. When they brought my entree, I asked for "the dinner". They don't speak much English and implied this was the dinner. Yet, I got no salad, soup, side? The fish looked like something that cat dragged out of the garbage! There was very little to eat on the himachi! My friend had something that was so so and we can't even tell you what it was! We tried to ask for more sake or service but they never came to serve when asked. The place was not crowded. Absolutely disgusting. Run by those who pretend to know how to make sushi, though they know just as much as I know how to make love to an iguana. The rice is gooey and slimy, and the fish... I thought it was lutefisk. The rolls were innundated in mayonnaise, and the ginger is straight out of the gallon-sized jar. Avoid at all cost, even if Sushi Ran down the street is full. This place puts the "s" in sucks! Our family went here to grab a bite after sightseeing and man were we disappointed. We're from southern Cali, where sushi joints are abundant but we expected much more from a place literally on the coast. Sushi was horrible, service was slow and waitress forgot several things. It took 40 minutes for our two sushi rolls to come and we were one of 4 guests. Check came to $55 after two rolls, edamame, chicken skewer and two lemonades! Argh!!! read more

This is not the best restaurants in the Marin County. The food generally is actually okay, but not decent. This place is actually very expensive compare to its price. The Marin County price, Chinatown quality Japanese food made by the Chinese couple owners. 3 stars for food 2 star for service 1 star for decor 1 star for hygiene 1 star for price 1 star for hygiene is that if you use the restroom, you will know, the restroom inside the kitchen wasn't suppose to be used by customers, and the oil in the flyer is very old, dark, and dirty, and they also re-use their ginger and wasabi! Very low key place. It's hard to compare to Sushi Ran in any way. Go there when you just want some sushi and want to get in and out pretty quickly--it never seems to be busy. Last time the sushi rolls seemed a bit messy . . . they could do better on that account. If you love Sushi Ran, you probably won't like this place. read more

Love this cute restaurant overlooking the park. The place itself is pretty-- light and airy with its corner location and French windows. It's a strange thing to comment on, but it's easy to talk here, too. Sometimes the acoustics in a place are so bad you can't hear each other very well. (haven't figured out what causes that). Because it's on the south end of Caledonia, there's always plenty of parking. I've been here many times and the food has always been terrific. The sashimi is incredibly fresh, the tempura done in a light, crispy batter, and interesting sushi rolls--my fave is anything with tuna. The darling owners have always been here when I've come, personnally cooking and serving to make sure everything is perfect. read more

Quite nice. The food is fresh and well put together. I have been here many tines and they are consistently good. I rarely have had the sushi, but the cooked dishes are inventive and good. I especially like the salmon over garlic soba and sprouts. Today I enjoyed the oyako-don. It was a pleasant surprise to have well-flavored miso come with it, as at most restaurants the don-buri doesn't come with miso unless ordered separately. read more

Friendly waiter and sushi chef make up for somewhat slow service and poorly rolled sushi made with medium-grain brown rice that doesn't stick or hold very well. Fish quality was fine, and more enjoyable in the nigiri sushi. but as is said in other reviews, the knife skills aren't here either. Fresh ingredients are the key, though, and this place has them. We spent $50 on takeout from this place and the rice was heavy with rancid oil, the fish all tasted like it had gone bad, and none of the sushi tasted fresh. Honestly one of the worst sushi experiences I've ever had and will never order from here again. The fried tuna roll was huge hunks old, dry tuna without any rice (see photo) and I cannot describe how disgusting it was. When I called to complain and ask for a refund, the manager said she could give "credit" for ONE roll for a future visit (never happening ) and that I "must not like the taste of eel" which is actually my favorite kind of sushi. read more

Although the quality of the fish at Sweet Ginger is not quite on par with many of the upper scale sushi restaurants around Marin, decent prices and a simplicity to the dining experience make this an attractive option if you are in the mood for an easy meal without the hassle. Of the sushi I recommend the Caledonia roll- a makizushi of sake, unagi, and avocado. Most of the maki rolls I have had here have been good, as have the nigiri. The udon is a safe bet. Unfortunately I can't really recommend anything cooked from the kitchen, as most of the dishes I have ordered that were cooked have been sub par. read more

A humble Japanese restaurant with average dishes. I tried the Pork Katsu and was fairly surprised at how moist the pork tasted even after it was tenderized, breaded and fried. The plus side is the portions are much larger than Marin's only Hawaiian restaurant. No macaroni salad offered. I would definitely return to give their sushi dishes a try. read more

Easily the best spot around for sushi or a quick stop in for some sake and a quick bite. Affordable enough to try lots, super friendly which makes you feel at home and want to go back often (which we do). The food is always fresh and delish' and the service is amazing (attentive, but not obnoxiously hawking your table while you sit and enjoy/take your time). Not impressed.....ordered California Roll, which fell apart....and simple dish....Chicken Teriyaki....how can you go wrong with that ? Chicken was dry and the teriyaki had no flavor at all ! It was terrible, the worst I have ever eaten. I couldn't finish it. Will NEVER go back again. I know they overheard me saying how bad it was but no one asked if they could do anything about it. I really like Sweet Ginger as a mellow weeknight spot. We tend to go every couple weeks for fresh, basic, yummy sushi. On busier nights, it seems they don't have extra employees to deal with the bustle. Valentine's day, they were exceptionally busy, and exceptionally slow, but now we just know to only go when the place looks empty. Overall, though, it's still our favorite local spot, and we'll continue to enjoy it! read more

Maybe I've drunk the sushi ran koolaid. But I was really disappointed by the meal at Sweet Ginger. Primarily because sushi ran doesn't deliver and I've been jonesing for a low-buck, sushi delivery place ever since I left Chicago this summer. Unfortunately I don't think Sweet Ginger fills that roll. We had an assortment of different rolls and they were all just kind of bleh. This place has some of the best -cold- sushi around. The caledonia roll is one of the best rolls I've had in a while, and everything else that we've gotten cold is wonderful as well. The Miso is also fantastic. The bad side is that their cooked food & rolls are worse than average. We've been there several times and are consistently disappointed by anything that comes from the kitchen. If, however, you're in the mood for normal sushi, this place is quite wonderful, and definitely worth the visit. read more

The food is sub standard but it's expected I suppose. The ramen has nothing notable about it and was incredibly bland. The noodles were very tough and chewy. Did not come apart easily. The food is ok, but the service was some of the worst I've experienced. They kept trying to push me out even before we were done eating just because they had other people waiting. Cutting straight to the quick, It's not often that I get Japanese food that is on par with Moms cooking. Lucky for me, I've got a spot 2 blocks from where I live that this guilty pleasure often occurs. Great lunch (bento boxes) specials that are incredible bargains. My husband and I are locals have been here no less than 3 dozen times over the last 2-3 years. We love the Spicy Sashimi Salad, which must have about 10 oz of fabulous, ahi, salmon, shrimp, and octopus along with the baby greens and a spicy home made viniagrette. (we usually ask for Wayne to tune down the spice a notch because it's definitely hot.) It is The Perfect Dish if you're on a lo-carb diet. Sweet Ginger also does a great Dragon Roll, and the Albacore with Garlic is fantastic. The tuna so smooth and buttery and the garlic with so much punch - it's hard to believe it's nothing but garlic! We take a lot of out-of-town visitors to SG when we want something casual and it's high on everybody's "wanna return" list when they come again. Other SJ things we really like: the seaweed salad and spinach salad are very good. I'd pass on the Spicy Tuna Rolls and their Spider Rolls - other places do them better. Service is attentive and friendly, and in all our times there, there was only 1 instance when it was slow, and it was clearly due to a missing server and a ton of delivery orders. read more
