To me it was in the middle of the road and nothing to ride home for. Food comes promptly and friendly staff, but I am.not sure if we would be back though as there are way too many other options and competitor for more refined nigiri options. Great neighborhood sushi joint. Came for dinner on a weekday and was greeted immediately. Lots of seating inside and it was clean and comfortable. I got the agedashi tofu and the MJ roll. Priced well and portions were good for the price. Tasty and filling. Service was efficient despite not that many people working there. Overall, MJ Sushi does well in its category. Have eaten here a few times now, and each time it's got better. First time was right around opening and it was still getting things optimized. Now, I can order online and pick up in 15-20 mins. Very good sushi and a mix of interesting rolls. Very generous sashimi pieces too - our last take out had lovely juicy big Maguro slices. Favorites do far are the 49er roll and Mango topped ones. Tip : order takeout via the website. Uber Eats is 20% more per serve which is a big hike. Ordering direct is very reasonable given the quantity/quality. Easy pickup with parking too. Decided to try out this spot as it had pretty decent reviews and it was on our way back to SF from Muir Beach. The parking entrance is a sharp right turn off the freeway, with the front only having four parking spaces. You should give yourself enough time to slow down and continue to the parking in the back of the restaurant, which has ample spots. You can enter the restaurant from either the front or the back doors, just have to make yourself noticed by the sushi chef or waitress since there is no designated "wait to be seated" area. Like the name suggests, this restaurant specializes in sushi, so the actual entree menu is limited to Beef, Chicken, and Salmon Teriyaki. There was also an interesting mix of vegetarian sushi rolls that consisted of tempura pumpkin or sweet potato. Service: We were the 2nd party to arrive at the restaurant for Sunday dinner, but quickly the restaurant filled up (including a big birthday party table) and there was only 1 waitress running around. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that having just 1 waitress/ waiter here isn't the usual case, but I would hope for a weekend they would be able to hire another person. One of our orders ended up going to a different table on accident and it was a little chaotic. But I applaud the waitress for her efforts all alone. Food: The entrees came with miso soup and salad and the beef teriyaki was tender. We also ordered the MJ Special sushi and Unagi roll and chicken karaage that were simple, but good. Go early or you'll wait & having a choice of beverage Asahi dry beer or Sapporo on the house! Ambiance is missing but so what? I'd rather not pay much higher prices for ambiance & small pint-size pieces of sashimi or sushi w/more rice than fish! Andy Fan owns several MJ's in the Bay Area & the "Grand Opening" sign outside in Sausalito may be up for a while like New York shops in Times Square "Closing for Good" (tonight @ 6:30 in tiny letters). I've been eating a lot more sushi for lunch lately, which is unusual for me, but since my usual go-to spot is often closed during lunch hours, I've been trying out different places. This time, MJ had a bunch of interesting options available on Uber Eats, so I decided to give it a try. First off, the fish quality was very, very good -- definitely a strong point. The rolls themselves were fine, though a bit less flavorful than I was hoping for. The miso soup was solid and exactly what you'd expect -- nothing remarkable, but no complaints either. When I went in to pick up the order, I was a little surprised by how empty it was. It was around 1:30 pm, peak lunch time, and there were only two or three people inside. That said, I didn't think too much of it and moved on. They did an excellent job with the packaging. Everything was packed neatly, and they were very generous with soy sauce and chopsticks, which was honestly nice to have and made the whole takeout experience easy. The sashimi platter could have been better -- that was probably the one item that fell slightly short for me. Also, the wasabi was placed in the middle of the rolls, so it ended up touching several pieces. If you're someone who likes to control how much wasabi you use, that might be a downside. Personally, I didn't mind too much. Overall, the food was good. Not the best sushi I've ever had, but definitely enjoyable. A new sushi spot in Sausalito. MJ Sushi has a lot of parking if you go to their back parking lot. Inside is spacious, plenty of seating, and you are immediately warmly greeted by a staff member. We ordered some gyoza, miso soup, california roll, 10 piece sashimi combo, and a couple of their specialty rolls. The food came out FAST, within only a few minutes. Everything was good, no complaints. Our waitress was also nice in bringing us extra plates and utensils for the table and made sure our waters were filled throughout our meal. read more

We've been here three times since we discovered it and have been more than satisfied each visit. We've always been warmly greeted when we arrived, and that level of welcome has continued through our entire meal. We had both the gyoza and vegetable tempura both times we went for dinner. Both were served quickly and were hot and crispy. They were not greasy, which is always a plus. We've had both maguro and hamachi sashimi at every visit. It may only be five pieces, but I'd guess there is at least six ounces or more of fish total. It is the bargain of the year. Their classic rolls are all very reasonably prices as well. Kappamaki is under $4.00 for six pieces which is almost unheard of in the Bay Area. The other rolls were around $6.00 each. Dinner for two big guys was around $80, which is a far cry from what we've spent at the other well-known sushi spot in Sausalito. The environment is utilitarian, but I come for the food and not the decoration. Highly recommended. read more

I love supporting new, local businesses, and am sympathetic to how difficult it is to succeed in the restaurant industry, especially in the Bay Area. As well, this particular location is notoriously difficult, and I'd love to see a business succeed here. That said, it's important to be honest about my experience and not lead people astray. After all, that's the entire point of Yelp. MJ Sushi was an enormous disappointment, and the worst restaurant experience I've had in some time. Service - nice greeting and accommodating demeanor. However, as the meal wore on, things went downhill. Two ordered dishes were forgotten and never brought to the table. The waiter seemed to forget about us. Long wait to get the check and to conclude the meal. Food - Not good. The o-toro was the worst I've ever had. The non-fish items (edamame, salad, etc.) did not seem fresh. The salmon in the entree was dry and woefully overcooked. Ambiance - seems unchanged from prior tenant. Bathroom not well cared for. Vacuum tube visible from the dining area near the kitchen. All told, it seems like this ownership group is trying to get by on the cheap. It's baffling that more effort is not being put into making sure MJ Sushi is successful. Wow. Great sushi here. Fluefin Otoro 6 pieces for less than $20. Chirashi was amazing all large pieces, bluefin tuna slices between traditional bluefin and Chu toro. Hamachi great. Usually not a fan of albacore but the cut was amazing not tough and dense. The value is tremendous here. Service with a nice smile, rainbow row amazing. I would suggest ordering from the traditional menu if you're more a traditional sushi lover. Ambiance is comfortable. Large space. Tables and chairs what you'd expect from a local joint but adorned with some very beautiful chandeliers. Certainly eclectic and the team really cares. Well done. Don't know why this place is not rated higher than a 4 but it should be a 4.5 in my book. read more

We've been here twice since it opened and have really enjoyed it both times. From the starters, we've tried the chicken karaage, takoyaki, tempura (twice), and gyoza. The gyoza and tempura are nicely fried, and the takoyaki was a pleasant surprise--great flavor and a light, fluffy texture. For sushi, we've had the Hot Mama Roll, TS Roll, California Roll, and Spicy Tuna Roll, along with the Tako, Sake, and Otoro nigiri. Everything was fresh and well-prepared. We're also big fans of their sake selection. Overall, we've had really positive experiences and hope this place sticks around for a long time. Highly recommend checking it out! read more

The good: the pricing, the "House" hand roll, the location/parking. The "eh": ambiance was a bit.. strange. I know they've only been open for a bit, so I don't wanna harp on this too much, but walking in you can definitely tell that it was a different restaurant previously. As in, not a ton done to make this feel like a Japanese restaurant.. The only way I could describe it as may be rushed to get open. And maybe that's just the vibe, who knows. There's no sushi counter seating, the tables are pretty spread out as it's a reasonably sized restaurant, so it leaves a bit of an empty/airy feel, and not in a "gives you space" kind of comfort. The service was also mediocre. The one gentleman that told me to sit anywhere I could tell was fairly new as he was reading people's orders as he dropped off the food, and the woman who looked more familiar with the restaurant seemed a bit, rushed and not extremely welcoming. Let's say, sometimes you just need some non-overpriced sushi, and this will do the job. And the qualities seemed decent as well. But maybe I'm just spoiled, having recently come back from Japan, but to me, service ambience sell the place before you even hit your seat. Was so looking forward to a pleasant meal after a long market , server's so rude. Every question I asked came with a very instant and very rude. "I don't know" The roll I ordered included to tobiko. They had one tiny pile on center of the role. When I asked for more, I said usually, I'm surprised the whole role has to be because more than once she said, my boss, my boss, my boss, so whatever this boss is doing not great for the patrons. Ordered online for takeout - sushi, sashimi, teriyaki chicken dinner and gyoza. Unfortunately they placed the hot dishes on top of the sushi in the bag, resulting in warm fish across the board. This really affected the taste and I couldn't tell if the fish was poor quality or just too warm to enjoy. We chose not to finish the fish as it was questionable due to the temperature. My son enjoyed the chicken teriyaki and rice dinner. Generous portions all around. If we go back it will be to dine in and try sushi fresh from the kitchen, or just stick with non-raw items. read more

We are from the east coast and most everything thing here is more expensive- but not MJ's sushi- it's priced better and the quality is amazing- we have eaten sushi all over the world - this is exceptional sushi- fresh- innovative- and perfect service- we absolutely loved the sushi and encourage everyone in the area and those visiting to go to MJ's!
