Bento box
Alison L.

Came here for lunch with a co worker and got the bento box. Food was good- not great. Portions were definitely on a smaller size, given the price point. Quality was great though, I would definitely be interested in coming back and trying some other things another time maybe not on the lunch menu.

Chirashi Dinner

The service was really good here. Our waiter was very attentive even with a pretty busy night. And we were a group of 7 as well. As for food the chirashi dinner was very good and you could taste the freshness of all the seafood! It was very filling and the price is worth it. The matcha strawberry tiramisu was very light and not too sweet. It was a really nice way to end the night! That alongside the hot green tea (refills included) was the perfect pairing. Very cozy restaurant but it seems they have outside seating as well if you're interested.

A Taste of Tradition at Masa's Sushi During our last visit to Novato, we decided to have lunch. Walking by Masa's Sushi, we noticed they were getting ready to open in 10 minutes. So, we walked around the block and returned when they were open. We had our puppy with us, so we opted for outside seating. It was chilly, so they turned on the two heaters near us, and we were all set. I later learned Masa's Sushi in Novato is a popular local restaurant founded by Masayuki Okugawa, a skilled sushi chef passionate about traditional Japanese cuisine. The restaurant is renowned for its fresh, high-quality ingredients and authentic flavors. Today, Masa's Sushi is guided by Chef Takatoshi Toshi, a highly respected sushi chef trained under Okugawa. Our server, a very professional young man, explained a couple of items on the menu and answered a few questions we had. We started with Miso Soup, which was delicious, and shared four pieces of Salmon and Yellowtail Nigiri. Needless to say, the nigiri was fresh and tasty. For the main course, I chose Kakiage Udon, and my significant other chose Miso Black Cod. Both dishes were very well presented, tasty, and satisfying. Although my partner is not a big fan of Cod, she really enjoyed her choice. As for the Udon, it was one of the best ones I have had in recent memory. This was a very pleasant experience, and we will definitely visit Masa's Sushi next time we crave food in Novato.

Hokkaido Dumplings

Masa NEVER disappoints! Everytime my wife and I have meal here it's always incredible and satisfying. High quality sushi and flavors are perfect; they let the fish shine when getting nigiri or sashimi, then with the tataki style plates the blend of flavor does not outshine the fish you're eating. Definitely recommend the sake flight and the 3 piece tasting of Tuna and Salmon. If you like some heat, the hamachi jalepeno is delicious. We tried the Hokkaido Scallop & Red Crab Dumplings this time and they were delicious, a little rich with a slight nutty flavor, very good. Wagyu nigiri was amazing as always. Ended with some toro tataki, and the thin red onion tempura slices ontop are such a great bite with the toro. Whether at the sushi bar or a table, the cozy ambiance can make it casual or romantic depending on the occasion. Service is always on point and helpful. In conclusion, I'm not surprised to see the Michelin star from 2025 on the wall. Our waiter tonight was an example of that Michelin star as well, wish I caught his name. Homemade ice cream is better than you think too... tried a new kelp flavor tonight, tasted like pistachio & caramel.

First time here. Very tasty, great presentation and service. We were there for lunch and found it to be great value for a very good sushi. Back cod was delicious too. Worth the drive there!

Was recommended this spot by a family member as they know I am an avid sushi lover. Went in on the weekend as they opened for dinner with a reservation. Ambiance was very nice, calming, and serene. The whole staff was very attentive & respectful (we were the only ones in the restaurant at the time; lucky us). The sushi was absolutely fantastic, every piece catered & crafted with precision & taste. Very fresh. The sake was very good, ordered it hot. The dessert was delicious! I will definitely come back when I am in town.

Shumai

2019 Michelin Good reviews This is what brought me to Masa's. The above three stars sums up my experience. The service was friendly and attentive and food was brought out quickly. Restroom is clean, restaurant appeared well kept. The food: ordered a bento box and sashimi lunch, shumai appetizer, and green tea. Greet tea was nice. The shumai... hmmmm, strange texture (mushy) and nearly no flavor. Even with adding soy/wasabi.... not a good choice. The bento was ok. Typical bento one might find anywhere. The sashimi was disappointing. The sizes of the fish were pretty small and uneven. Many of the pieces were marinated, why hide the flavor of the fish?? I couldn't find the Michelin in the food at all. Not one to recommend, nor repeat visit. Not the worst, but failed expectations.

Great place for lunch or dinner. The ramen soup is hearty and delicious. They also have really yummy bento boxes on the lunch menu. If the weather is nice there is a parklet to sit outside. On our last visit we sat out there with the dog and it was very peaceful.

Chirashi lunch super good value

The restaurant is in a nondescript pocket sized strip mall. I had my doubts, but felt we were transported somewhere else as soon as we stepped through the door. We were welcomed and seated immediately. The menu is extensive, mostly sushi and sashimi dishes. We ordered exactly the right amount for the two of us, including a special appetizer of a shrimp custard (yum), tempura shrimp (two shrimp, crispy, dipping bowl with a side of spicy daikon we could add). I ordered the Hakata Mizutaki hot pot with chicken and cabbage. My wife went for the Queen sushi roll with unagi, hamachi and sweet sauce and a small 2-piece sashimi plate. For dessert we ordered another special, a sweet potato custard that came with a generous scoop of the creamiest vanilla ice cream I've ever had. The presentation for the dessert was so special... it came in a lidded lacquer box (see photos). After recently eating in a terribly noisy restaurant, we appreciated that the sound level here was very low, making conversation easy. Our server was gracious and attentive (filling our pot of tea with hot water, and then pouring the tea for us). All of the food was fantastic. The total with tax and tip came out to $135 for two people. That's probably on par for the quality of the food, but steep for us, so this will become more of a "special treat" dinner place for us. But we do want to return to sample more dishes.

This dining experience puts other 5-star restaurants to shame. The attention to detail is…read moreincredible. First, it is small and in a strip mall next to a Smoke Shop, but don't let that fool you. Reservations are suggested, but seating at the small sushi bar is saved for walk in guests. If you have a handbag, it's placed in a canvas tote or basket so it doesn't have to be hung over the chair or on the floor. The playlist is perfect! I rarely notice music unless it's excellent or horrible or interferes with conversation. This was extremely well done--not too loud and not intrusive but a great vibe. The restroom was also nicely appointed and spotless. Service was friendly, efficient, and everyone seemed happy to be there. The tables were spaced so that servers could move around without having to worry about diners and guests didn't feel rushed or crowded. The spacing also provided for more privacy for conversations. Everything was delicious! From the red miso to sashimi to nigiri to the rolls. The presentation was amazing and the food was even better. Much of the fish is flown in from Japan daily and the rest is just caught. We ordered more dishes than we usually do in two different evenings out! It was that delicious and fresh. There is no outside dining and no takeout. Dinner only and limited seating. The focus is on a high quality, attentive enjoyable experience and they don't disappoint.

That should have been the first red flag. After being seated, we were completely ignored. No placemats, no water, no greeting -- nothing. We had to ask just to be acknowledged so we could order, and even then the staff acted like we were an inconvenience. What made it worse was watching them clear two other tables, seat new families there, and fully set those tables up -- all while we were still sitting there with zero service. It was obvious we were not a priority at all. The only moment anyone looked our way was when we finally got up and walked out -- and not a single person attempted to apologize or stop us. That level of indifference says everything. Absolutely unacceptable service. We will never return.

Service was immediate and attentive. A very nice young man delivered menus, tea, water and a carafe of water to our table. You have a choice of ordering on a tablet at the table or the server also came by to ask if he could take our order. Ordering on the tablet was super easy and straight forward. We ordered gyoza as an appetizer, one chirashi (sushi rice with fresh fish on top), and three of us ordered the 2-item bento: Teriyaki salmon & tempura Chicken katsu & shio saba Bulgogi & spicy tuna roll The bentos come with a nice miso soup and salad. They do offer a wide variety of rolls as well as an assortment of side dishes and salads. There is a robot that comes around to deliver food to the tables. Our server delivered the soup and salad to us personally. The robot delivered our main meals but our nice server walked to our table and took them from the robot and delivered them to each of us. Again, a very thoughtful touch. Our food was paced well and our server came to replace our carafe of water with a full one without having to ask. I heard the bulgogi was a bit on the sweeter side and the chirashi had a beautiful assortment of seafood. We enjoyed trying a new place and would definitely come back. There is a beautiful huge screen with an ocean channel playing on the far wall. I loved watching all the sea life in their natural habitat. Parking is easy shared with other businesses. This restaurant is easy to find right off of Lakeville.
