My wife loves sushi - me, no thanks. But I am happy to dine at a restaurant that also serves Tempura. We found Sakura Sushi and I saw they did In fact have other choices besides sushi on their menu. We visited on a weeknight and were seated immediately. I liked the vibe and feel of the restaurant and the person who sat us was friendly. After a few minutes we placed our order - I chose the Tempura Dinner and my wife ordered the nightly special with Nigiri. We both ordered a beer which arrived shortly after our order along with Miso Soup. It was a good Miso, with long strands of mushroom that I had not had before. The Tempura Dinner had 3 pieces of good sized Shrimp and a variety of battered and friend vegetables. My wife's special had an assortment of Nigiri Sushi which she really enjoyed. Prices were reasonable given the portion size, flavor and service. I would happily return to Sakura Sushi for another meal.

Hamachi Kama, ninja, walnut prawn, salad and a little rice !thank you, Jessica!

It's always such a pleasure to go into the restaurant. Everyone is so kind! Even when I order online they know who I am. Thank you, Jessica

I think this was the hamachi toro? I've never had such a thing before! It tasted like heaven!

Yoooooooo! An updated review long overdue! I've been back a couple times since last review and the fish has always been fresh. The owner/sushi master has always kept his standards when it comes to his fish. He don't play around! I'm so glad this last time I decided to get the sashimi combo, and got to taste some of the best sashimi I've ever had, the hamachi toro! I've never heard of such a thing, not to mention tasted it. As you can see in my picture, the hamachi toro is glistening white, and upon taking a bite through the flesh, it bounces back like how pasta be Al dente. Then it's just a punch in the face of juiciness and fattiness from this quality sashimi. Not to mention the lingering sweetness of an after taste. I don't think my words even did it justice. I wish all 20 pieces were hamachi toro, but then the owner would be broke trynna feed me... All the other fishes are good too. There's salmon, my favorite, and tuna toro, also my favorite. Maguro is lean tuna, so being a fattie myself, no comments! Keep up the good work sakura sushi!! Until next time, I'll be dreaming about and drooling over that hamachi toro!

7 Pieces Nigiri and Spicy Tuna Roll

Tucked in an office park, this hidden sushi enclave felt like a true local treasure. The hostess was kind and the service was prompt. As for the sushi, no complaints. We did as our hostess suggested and tried the San Rafael roll, which did not disappoint. We also opted for the 7 piece nigiri which were all high quality and came with a spicy tuna roll. The decor was a little cluttered but in a homey way. We are happy to have found our new go-to to satisfy sushi cravings!

Sakura Special

It's a beautifully decorated space with lights and cherry blossoms all around the sushi bar. There is seating that wraps around the sushi bar and another 15+ tables, so it can hold a good sized capacity. However, due to the configuration of tables, probably wouldn't be good to have a group larger than 6. I wasn't particularly impressed by the 3 rolls I tried. If your palette is refined enough to enjoy nothing but the quality of fresh fish, you'll enjoy this place. I stick to sushi rolls because I like added flavor from sauces and different textures from other ingredients. Unfortunately, I didn't get much of that from the spicy tuna, San Rafael, or Sakura special rolls. The fish was fresh, but not much flavor. I wouldn't order the sakura special again. I was curious what it would be like to sub rice for cucumber but now I can see why that's not very popular. It had kind of a slimy texture that was tough to get down. This is a small critique but wanted to point out that the pieces in each roll are a bit too large. I was barely able to fit an entire piece in my mouth but my girlfriend was not able to at all. It made it difficult for her to eat them. A suggestion would be to cut the pieces maybe 2/3 of the size.

Pearl & salmon lover rolls.

This is based on delivery only, but I plan to dine-in soon as sushi has been great... Super fresh tasting, well made sushi. Their menu has some nice options for salmon lovers like myself. I do notice they (wisely) add a nearly 30% surcharge to the price of their rolls when you order on an app, which is steep, but I get it. I'd rather a great spot do that than lose money on those orders and suffer for it! I'll report back after I dine-in, but definitely give this spot a try if you're in Marin and looking for sushi.

Chicken Katsu Curry

I've been wanting to try this place since driving past it but I haven't had time. I decided it was finally time to give them a try. The location can be easy to miss as it's inside a parking complex way across from the movie theater. I love that there is plenty of parking however. I ordered online ahead of time so I can't really review the service/dining experience. 1. Chicken Katsu Curry: Absolutely delicious. There are a large amount of chicken and it was perfectly fried. It honestly didn't even need the curry but I appreciated that they packed it on the side so the chicken didn't get soggy. highly recommend! 2. Chicken Teriyaki: Pretty good but no where as good as the katsu curry. Typical chicken teriyaki. The sauce was good which I loved. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Overall, I really liked the food here. It was high quality and delicious. A bit on the pricey side however. I think it was $40ish for both dishes together (about $20 each) which is a bit more than avg but the quality and portion size was good. I'll definitely be back!

Been wanting to checkout Sakura after hearing about it for friends for awhile now. So when we had to be in SR for a meeting, we decided to have a nice long Friday afternoon lunch here. Nice easy parking in the office building lot. Look for the sign to turn into the lot because you might miss it thinking it's just an office building. It's nicely tucked away in a corner. Too bad it was raining because the outside looks like a nice option for views and atmosphere if the weather was better. The server Jessica is amazing! She's so welcoming and friendly, and gives great advice on what's new and fresh. Ask her, she's a great resource. We decided to splurge and got the blue fin and hamachi toro, a chirashi bowl (great selections!), and a hamachi kama/collar as a starter. All were really amazing! The kama was so soft and flaky, melting our mouths and the homemade sauce was a perfect complement. The chirashi bowl was packed and what a delicious and aesthetically beautiful selection! But the best we're the toros -- we only got the nigiri (2 pieces) and didn't get the salmon toro but next time we will get the sashimi (5 pieces) of all 3! So fresh and beautifully presented (see ny pics!) Can't wait to come back. Just looking back at our pics makes us hungry for more Sakura!

House Special Roll California Roll

I got the California roll and the Ramune drink and the Banana Tempura with mango ice cream and it was very good!!! The service was quick and also very good and the ambiance was also very good because it felt like a classic Japanese restaurant!!!

The restaurant doesn't allow modifications, which was one reason we waited until now to try, since both of us have food allergies. We selected the miso soup (my husband said it was difficult and he liked it, but has had better), the seaweed salad (I loved it-clean and not dripping with dressing), four types of sashimi (all very flavorful and fresh), and two rolls (ocean, and soft shell crab). The soft shell crab was delicious and the ocean was very good. The outside patio will be our next destination. Everyone was very nice and friendly. We're looking forward to trying a meal in the patio soon.

Service by main waiter was great as always. Getting our food was very slow and left some with ordered items and others of us waiting 20+ min (I expect timing differences in sushi restaurants but not to this extent) Sushi (tuna only) and also the Roll with tuna on top did not look presentable, as fish was probably older than it should have been, and/or not handled properly, or a poor section of fish, and should have been used for a different purpose (or discarded), rather than give us something that does not look or taste great. Another roll (Akira) as well was not at the same level as it had been on other visits. We should have complained, but waited so long that we just moved forward with items that were still good. Food should look beautiful or intentional relative what it represents, which normally it does at this restaurant. Experience last night was a 2 star given a couple of the items were still good (salad, salmon, others). Adding 4 stars to this review given the normal 4 to 5 stars based on prior exceptional visits. Hope last night was a one-off and doesn't represent something else going in the restaurant. I will be back and hope this comes back up to higher level.

Yelp really needs to offer zero stars--or negative stars--for experiences like this…read more STAY AWAY. Terrible service, cold pre-made food, questionable seafood freshness, and a staff attitude that ruined a family birthday dinner. We came here for my sister-in-law's birthday during a weekend getaway. Our 5:30 p.m. reservation for party of 5 was easy because the restaurant was empty. We chose to sit outside since the weather was nice. At first, everything seemed fine. The waiter brought menus, dinnerware, cups, and water quickly and took our order in a reasonable amount of time. Then the food came out suspiciously fast. The chawanmushi was lukewarm, which is completely wrong for a steamed egg custard that should be served hot and freshly steamed. That made me wonder how much had been prepared too early and left sitting around. The chicken karaage, lemon salmon, tempura udon, agedashi tofu, sashimi, and nigiri sampler were all forgettable. At best, it was average Japanese food for an area with limited options. Worse, the fish had a noticeable "fishy" taste, which raised serious concerns about freshness or storage. The final item we ordered was Curry Tonkatsu, but regular tonkatsu came out instead. We left it untouched because we wanted to send it back or exchange it. By then, we were almost 40 minutes into dinner, everyone had run out of water, and the waiter still had not checked on us. When we finally saw him after another long disappearance, we asked him to come over and clarify the order. That is where the entire table lost its appetite. When we explained that we had ordered Curry Tonkatsu, the waiter became defensive and insisted, loudly and condescendingly, that he had asked whether we wanted curry and that we had said tonkatsu. My sister-in-law explained she said tonkatsu because the menu offered a choice between tonkatsu and chicken katsu, but he kept scolding her. The worst part? She apologized repeatedly--on her own birthday--while he doubled down and said, "Besides, we already made it." So we were supposed to accept the wrong order because the kitchen had already made it? There was zero ownership, zero hospitality, and zero professionalism. My husband asked if we could at least get a side of curry, and we also asked for water. The waiter left and did not return for another 20 minutes. When he finally came back outside, he served the large table next to us first. By the time he reached us, the pitcher ran out, so only three of five people got water. We had to share what little we received before he returned again. The curry side did not arrive until about half an hour after we asked for it. When it finally came out, it was cold and served in a plain white bowl. Either it had been made far too early and left out, or they are microwaving pre-made food for guests. By then, the meal was already ruined. At that point, we just wanted to pay and leave. Everyone was still hungry, but no one had an appetite after being talked down to, ignored, left without water on a hot summer evening, and made to feel punished for questioning a wrong order. The waiter never checked on us again, so we went inside to pay at the register ourselves. As we left, we passed him, and he did not acknowledge us at all. Maybe this place gets a pass because the area has limited Japanese options, but calling it an izakaya is a joke. The food was mediocre at best, and the service was worse than anything I have experienced at far more ordinary restaurants in the midwest like IOWA or MINNESOTA. I will never come back, and I will warn others. Cold food that tasted pre-made or microwaved, seafood that raised freshness concerns, non-existent service, water treated like a luxury, and a waiter more interested in proving a point than fixing a problem. I am genuinely appalled. Avoid this place.

What made it worse was watching them clear two other tables, seat new families there, and fully set those tables up -- all while we were still sitting there with zero service.
