I got the bento box with spicy tuna roll, brown rice, chicken katsu and salad. The tuna roll tasted rancid. The brown rice was not cooked all the way. The chicken katsu was mushy. A regular lunch stop on a busy teaching day, when I make my way to TL High School from College of Marin. Very Japanese way of ordering - when you walk in, you can try the self-service touch screen ordering system (although it was having software issues when I tried it), or fill out the paper slip with your desired options with a provided pen. Then you hand your order slip to the cashier and pay. A lot like a ramen joint in Shibuya... The poke is wonderful (photo below) - generous portions means a very filling lunch. Service is polite and friendly (for me, at least, I see the other reviews...perhaps it's a "reserved Asian" thing). For me it's a go to if I'm in the mood for a big lunch. read more

Solid poke place. A lot of parking since it is in a center/plaza. They have an order-yourself kiosk but you can also order with the cashier. I ordered with the kiosk and it was straightforward. Got the cold poke bowl with half rice half greens and 2 proteins and a bunch of toppings. Since they only have one size of the poke bowl, they heap on the toppings which is nice. They did use iceberg lettuce only for the greens, which is not the best greens for a poke bowl in my opinion. They also had an assortment of unique sauces i've never seen at orher poke places which is nice. Given that it's the only poke place near my job, I would come here again but not get the greens for my base. read more

Solid spot to pick up a poke bowl in the Northgate strip mall by Safeway. While they have seating, it is clear they cater more to the grab and go crowd. It didn't seem very inviting as a place to sit and have lunch, but when I did dig into my poke bowl at home, I was stoked. I ordered the half greens, half rice with salmon, poke, and all of the toppings. They have a great assortment of toppings, and they do not skimp on them. I'm guessing this will be a more regular lunch spot for a poke bowl to go when the weather gets nicer. read more

The food is good and the Poke bowl in particular is both healthy and tasty. I've also had the Bento Box here and it's decent as well for a lunch-size portion. That said, $18.50 for a bowl of rice, greens, and a couple small portions of proteins isn't going to work for me. The dealbreaker for me was the obvious ask for a tip when making a payment on the digital screen. Sorry, I don't tip for counter service, and it feels very awkward when it's so obviously asked for and when you're watched to see what you enter on the screen when you pay. You get half the protein compared to other poke places but lots of toppings without extra charges. Underwhelmed by the poke bowl. The small amount of fish with questionable quality is the reason for this review. The salmon didn't look or taste like salmon. It seems like some other fish dyed orange with no flavor at all. The mixed greens is actually chopped lettuce and while I got wasabi sauce, there wasn't even a hint of wasabi flavor. Everything was just bland. Service was also less than desirable. I'm only giving this place 3-stars because when your order a poke bowl they have a great selection of toppings. However, the bowl itself is very meh and for how much it cost made it even less worth it. The bowl wasn't that big, everything tasted like it was previously frozen. The order experience was also not great. I ordered online and the site didn't seem safe to put my even my credit card it. The website was also not mobile friendly. It was a quick pick up though and it was ready on time. I don't think I'll be coming back though. :( read more

Getting straight to the point, the food was both just okay and terrible. We placed a to-go order from Aloh-o's Northgate location. The online ordering part went well and was easy to use and the food was nearly ready when we arrived. This was our first time ordering online from Aloh-o, first time having their food actually. They're located in the shopping plaza near Safeway in Terra Linda. When you walk in the door, you're bombarded by a dark, chaotic and messy interior. The whole back section of the restaurant, where I assume you could sit during non-COVID times, was blocked off and full of supplies and random trash looking bags. It wasn't all that pleasant of a place to wait for your order so we waited outside until it was ready. From the items we ordered, only the vegan avocado/cucumber sushi rolls were tolerable. Even those had issues like completely falling apart as you picked them up. What was intolerable was the vegetable tempura. Absolutely the worst I've ever had. So greasy, so very soggy in heavy grease it was uneatable. The menu listed it as "veggie" but what we received was deep-fried sweet potato slices, dripping in grease. Total waste of money. The whole meal was off-putting and left an actual bad taste in our mouths. We were initially excited to find another local place that had a few vegan options but there's no chance we'd go back for another round after this experience. read more

Yes, I know...I was that person -_- 1 salmon avocado roll = $5.95 1 shrimp tempura roll = $6.95 1 mango green tea, no toppings = $4.00 My thoughts at the end: I should have gone with the bento lunch that every patron in the restaurant had at their table :: face palm:: The salmon avocado roll was exactly as it sounds. Nothing special and the fish was a bit too fishy for my liking - ended up giving away half to coworkers. Shrimp tempura roll was good, but nothing I hadn't experienced before. The batter was done well - crispy and ratio of batter to shrimp was pretty equal. The sauce that was drizzled on top was probably the only aspect that made it worthwhile. In conclusion: 1 point for tastiness of tea, 1 point for decent prices Mango green tea was the best part of my day. Yes, it was 100 degrees out and anything cold would have been refreshing, but mango GT has always been one of my favorites and like the classic little black dress, it never goes out of style for me! I loved it so much, I went back again. What I didn't enjoy the second time around was getting ripped off of a full cup's worth. I've been here twice now and will come back. Service is fast and friendly, and the poke bowl is generous. There's a tv playing the news, and some nice instrumental music playing in the background. Both times I've been here, my son slept through the entire ordeal because there's just enough noise as to not shock him when the register rings or people speak. The first time I ate here, I ordered a bowl along with a roll, and that was too much food. Today I ordered just the bowl, and I'm still having trouble finishing. There are unlimited toppings! So perhaps I may have overdone it. They also gave me a free miso soup today. Thank you! Ordering is easy breezy, as all the instructions are written down. There's a new spicy shoyu sauce! Mmm. The fish is good, but it's not the BEST --- but, you're paying $13 so keep your expectations realistic! There's water and hot tea at the beverage station. For those of you who are parents with babies in diapers, although there are high chairs in the restaurant, the bathroom does not have a changing table. read more

This review is long overdue! I've been coming to Aloh-o since late 2018 and have only ever had excellent experiences. I eat largely vegetarian, and am always amazed by the vast options available at Aloh-o: the meatless chicken is delicious, although I tend to go for a veggie bowl with tofu for protein. The spicy mayo is also a standard every time I order, and I honestly haven't found spicy mayo at any other restaurant that I enjoy as much as Aloh-o's. My family has some dietary particularities (my father is strictly vegetarian, and my sister and I have certain food tastes/textures that we struggle with) and Lisa always goes above and beyond to cater to our sometimes silly requests. For instance, I often order my bowl with teriyaki sauce, which is not an official option on the menu. Not only has Lisa been exceptionally accommodating, she often recognizes me when I come in (even if it's been months, and even if I am fully masked), asks me how I've been and how my family is, and personally discusses any special requests with the wonderful chefs. This may seem overly effusive, but I can't overstate this enough--I have never had a restaurant treat me with such care. On top of this, the food is delicious. Although I have honed my veggie bowl order to a fine art (edamame, tofu, mango, and crispy onion over sushi rice--DELICIOUS), I am always excited to order something new. The veggie gyoza is delightful, hearty, and hits the perfect comfort-food spot for me; the tempura vegetables are light, starchy, and a perfect accompaniment to their bright and salty sauce; and the honey milk tea is sweet, but not too sweet or too synthetic tasting. Although I haven't tried and thus cannot vouch for many of the meat offerings, I did order the teriyaki salmon bento box several times in my early days as a patron, and still frequently miss it! New places always get my attention when I have been back at the Northgate one mall I saw that this place has opened recently. Since I'm not very much into sushi or raw fish I checked and was happy to learn that the have chicken, beef option in their bento boxes. They always comes with white rice and greens and you can choose two option out of a list of items. I have chosen chicken katsu and teriyaki. The rice was perfect for eating with Chopstick (which I would expect from a sushi caring place). The salad was ok'ish could have made n general more exiting in adding some more ingredients it now cares greens and some small amount of carrots with some dressing. The katsu was good and the teriyaki sauce delicious, the chicken just perfect and still a bit crispy which I love. So food wise it was beside the salad a very delicious lunch. My only critic at this point is the size, it left me still hungry and with a price of 11.95$ (06/2018) it is not something you wanna order a second serving. It will surely not change since the plates are pre-sized compartments. Other then that I love the digital order station in the front which helps getting your order fast and accurate in their system. The kitchen and register area are well lite and looking very clean and efficient. The staff is friendly and fast preparing your order. You can also order at the register or fill out a order card with all options available. So pretty thought of ordering fast! I like that the dining area (which is surprisingly more roomier that expected) is a bit less lit and the dark wooden table are just perfect in that surrounding. When it is not to busy they also bring the order to your table and are fast in taking away your trash, since there is no trash or dish station. This of course as to be calculated I to the pricing. I wouldn't mind to take care of my Dishes if that would be in relation to the pricing. Just a very nice touch is that beside water they also offer free Jasmin tea! Very great! The last thing I like to mentioned when I was here they played Japanese music what I love cause it gets me in the mood of the country I enjoy food from. I hope this will stay that way. They also have a TV set which was out while I was there and I hope it stays that way and are only switched on when something special is showing up and not just running without any meaning or even for any other ball play. That would destroy the otherwise nice atmosphere here. Well I know it is a poke place and it's name I Aloh-o (a play on aloha) and pike mostly is big in Hawaii, but since they serve bento and sushi it is more a Japanese place :) So I would recommend it food wise if your ok with the pricing. I am sure most people might be not hungry after all maybe that just me :) you should be the judge about that yourself :). read more

Finally got to try this new spot at the Northgate One shopping center in San Rafael. A great addition to bringing more ethnically diverse food in Marin County. If you haven't tried Poke then this will be your opportunity. THE POKE BOWL (4 stars) Salmon, Yellow tail fish mixed with poke sauce (the non-spicy version), seaweed salad, red onion, edamame, cucumbers, avocados on top of sushi rice. The key to these bowls in to mix the ingredients once you get the bowl so you can taste all the flavors together. It's all good! THE SERVICE You go to the cashier and order your food first. They will guide you on the steps to order your poke bowl. Note that it took about 10 minutes for them to prepare your bowl so set those expectations when you come in. The also serve other options like Bento Combo Box, Nigiri and sushi rolls and side dishes like Gyoza, Tempura, soups and salads (see menus photos attached). Ordered the deep fried Californian roll and the Dragon roll. The Californian roll had a tempura covering that was more like cake batter (too much for my liking), while the Dragon roll was nice and simply made. This place is good for a quick lunch, similar to say Panda Express but for quick sushi. Definitely not high-end or over the top flavor, but it'll do. read more

I used to love this place but very disappointing waste of $40... very skimpy poke bowl. It says they give you 2 scoops of protein but more like they used a teaspoon as a scoop. We only got 2 toppings and got very little. For $14.95, it was mostly rice and only 1/2-3/4 of the bowl. Got a bento box which portion size was great but the tonkatsu was so tough & dry that it was inedible. The salad was chopped lettuce drowned in dressing- no carrots or tomato, only lettuce. Also got the shrimp tempura which would've been okay if it weren't soggy from the steam. Strawberry iced green tea was very strong flavored... probably black tea not green. I love them most for their bento boxes. They are simple, filling, and delicious. The sushi is decent, though not amazing but it's fairly budget friendly relative to some other places around here. From the entrance I could already tell this was your run of the mill Japanese fast food place. The workers were busy bees and didn't engage the customers much. A large order counter with menus and pictures splattered on its walls greet you as you come in. This is where the food orders, payment and special requests happen. Then you are left on your own to either wait for your togo order or find a seat and a worker will deliver your food to your table. A spacious but sparse dining area covers the rest of the back of the fast food place. Situated for a quick bite and perhaps some sports tv viewing, there is nothing much that encourages a patron to stay and linger. The food comes delivered to your table relatively quickly. read more
