The staff was very friendly and there was no wait for a table at lunchtime. We ordered many rolls, the best roll in my opinion was the dragon roll. Ok, starting to understand the lower star ratings... My family and I came in for dinner and we had a very different experience. The guy servers were all very friendly, but the female server we had was terrible. She got our order wrong. Twice. She wasn't personable at all and rushed us through ordering and through dinner. Sushi Ko is a welcoming spot in the very popular Marin Country Mart shopping and dining complex by the Larkspur Ferry. The first thing is I've had lunch here probably six or seven times in the last several years. For me, it just doesn't keep me coming back. And I'm really disappointed to say that because I want to support every restaurant in our area. I know people work hard and try to do their best. It is three stars and not one star after all -- but for me, four or five stars means things are exemplary. I find Sushi Ko is hit and miss. I know I'm not going here for premium sushi. But I would like it to be more competent. I want them to serve relatively clean fish, not necessarily "top shelf" like some of my favorites. I just want a good lunch. Service is solid and friendly. The menu offers reasonable selections of nigiri and sashimi and rolls - as well as Japanese lunch dishes. You have two wines to choose from - a Chardonnay and I believe a Cabernet. On one visit the Chardonnay was corked and clearly open for days. A next glass was from a fresh bottle. These things happen, but to me there should be more effort to make sure what they serve is ready to go. An appetizer not to miss: the black sesame asparagus. The black sesame sauce is delicious. I enjoy asparagus, even though I'm not sure it was the most fresh. I still recommend this dish although it is $12 and there's not much on the plate. For nigiri - the sake (salmon) was decent, as was the shiro maguro (albacore). The spider roll is decent - if a little bland. I found myself slightly disappointed in the rainbow roll. There was very little crab meat in it. And the fish on top just didn't wow me. Price is on par with similar sushi restaurants. Will I come back? Probably. It's a capable lunch spot and I do enjoy sushi for lunch or anytime. But I just have higher hopes for a place like this in a prominent area where a lot of people come to eat. I would give 0 stars if I could. If you want to be ignored by staff this is the place to go. We loved Sushi Ko prior to our most recent experience today. We had family in town and suggested this place as reliable and good service and were embarrassed by the treatment we received. We were sat at a table for 4 and 15 minutes in to being seated with no water or order taken, we were asked to move as they had a prior reservation that they needed to honor. We obliged and moved to a different table and were finally given water. Ten more minutes had passed after being moved and no one had come to taken our order. We attempted to flag a staff member for attention but could not receive any service. To our surprise, we look over and the people who were placed at our old seating had already been given their appetizers and were placing their dinner order. At this point, almost 30 minutes had passed with no order taken and only water received. We walked out and will now be finding a different sushi place that treats each customer with respect and consideration. read more

We opted for indoor seating today since it was 95 degrees at noon; they have a covered, outdoor patio as well. I really enjoyed the Hirame (halibut) Carpaccio with olive oil, ginger, garlic, and chives--thinly sliced and fresh. And a lovely presentation. My friend enjoyed her Gyoza as well as the Spider Roll well enough. The Grilled Saba (mackerel) had a nice flavor, but it was slightly overdone; it comes with ponzu sauce, white rice, and miso soup. The miso seemed a bit salty to me. I wonder if noise abatement might help out the sounds that bounced off the indoor concrete walls. The wait staff was attentive and pleasant. read more

Took my sister here to treat her for her birthday. The place is really nice with a comfortable upscale feel. Servers were friendly and helpful. Sadly, the sushi wasn't quite up to par. The fish was fresh but as some other reviewers noted, the sushi rice wasn't good. It didn't taste seasoned and it was definitely overcooked and mushy. This results in the sushi not tightly packed/rolled and easily falls apart making it hard to pick up with chopsticks. The unseasoned rice made the sushi bland as well. Considering that this is a fairly pricey place, the poor rice prep is hard to justify. read more

Sushi Ko has a special place in my heart, it's the first place my boyfriend took me out to dinner while showing me around his hometown. We came again recently for dinner and the place is just as amazing as I remember 5 years later. We sat at the bar so we could be close to all the action. Sunny, one of the sushi chefs, made great recs and was nice to talk to throughout the meal. Highlights included the heavenly roll, kinmedai nigiri, king salmon nigiri, and surprisingly the tempura appetizer! All the fish was fresh, especially the kinmedai which came off the specials board that Sunny recommended. The tempura was really crisp and fresh, and it stayed that way throughout the meal. From the sushi chefs to our server, everyone was so welcoming and friendly, it definitely added to the overall experience. The hot sake and beer was flowing and we ate until we were stuffed, though we did end the meal with some mango mochi. The restaurant is small yet intimate, and I loved the warm lighting and wood tones that brought a nice coziness to the space. Came here on an impromptu stop and wasn't impressed at all. Service is horrendous - even while standing in line, the "hostess" skips over us to the next person and helps them as if we didn't exist. I'm one to speak up but too much in a good mood at the time to ruin any moment. Took another 10 min before someone else showed up to even acknowledge us... many empty tables but staff seemed to be rushed and busy. The food was not anything spectacular- I ate half of my sushi but the others seemed to enjoy their choices but, again, not enough to say we will want it again. We've been fans of Sushi Ko for years, maybe even decades! Since Covid happened, we've alternately been getting takeout, and sitting in their outdoor covered patio area, maybe once every couple of months. Food has always been really good, and so has their service. My personal favorite is the veggie udon soup with tempura shrimp. My wife usually ends up getting a fancy sushi plate. Since it's located in Marin Country Mart (previously Larkspur Landing) across from the Larkspur ferry terminal, parking is convenient. Stopped by Marin Country Mart for a few hours and grabbed lunch at Sushi Ko. I was by myself and quickly grabbed a table in their outdoor space. Service was quick and attentive, without feeling like I was rushed. First, I started with a cup of miso soup; warm and delightful - exactly how miso soup should be! Though I don't particularly fancy sushi or sashimi, my favorite is their "Tempura and Chicken Teriyaki combo" This item comes with one shrimp tempura, assorted tempura vegetables, chicken teriyaki, mixed greens salad dressed with the tastiest salad dressing, miso soup and steamed white rice. I always order an extra shrimp. Everything is cooked perfectly and consistently delicious! Even if I am not a sushi and sashimi eater, I am certain and confident to say that their sushi and sashimi items are excellent, as evidenced by the faces of their happy, satisfied guests. I have been going to this restaurant for at least 15 years. In the last year or two it seems to have changed ownership. What used to be great sushi has now just become mediocre. More over the portion sizes have gone from eight pieces down to six pieces per roll, and the price is gone up. They also reduce the amount of fish you get per roll. Perfect example is Philadelphia role which had hardly a sliver of salmon or cream cheese. This was served on what tasted like stale rice. For comparison I've posted a picture of a $5 Friday roll from Safeway vs. the $14 Philly roll we were served. Oh, and Safeway is still only $10 on a normal day. read more

Came to the restaurant hungry and left hungry and feeling discriminated. My partner and I came in when the restaurant was empty. 30 Minutes later it was filled up and the server gave our food to another table. I looked around and saw 2 tables around us and 2 parties at the bar with their food within 10 minutes of ordering. As we left, we came to find out that 4 other tables outside the previously empty restaurant were now eating their food as well. I noticed the servers were attentive to everyone except us, which may have been because we were the only poc there, which is especially upsetting given the staff is all poc. Given we did not complain- we were hungry and were not expecting an empty restaurant to take 30 minutes just for them to serve our food to someone else, so we quietly left and got Shake Shack which served us 2 minutes after we ordered. We called back and told them the situation, and we got an apology which filled my stomach with nothing special. read more
