Daily Special and the Scratch Margarita
Cory H.

The sandos are baller on their food menu! The cocktails and tap options rock too. I'm a bit of a wine fan, so happy to see rotating bottles to choose from. Service is attentive but still laid back, no pressure means I end up spending more and coming back more often. Bring friends or have work lunches, the atmosphere provides a comfortable place for all.

The owners of this restaurant are a very nice couple (he's the chef, and his wife is often there…read moreworking as manager and server), therefore, it's not easy for me to deliver this review, but I want to be honest and forthright about my experience eating the food they sell. Part of their business model (she told me) is that her husband chose to set the menu items' prices high, but serve very large portions. For most people, this means that each combo plate is enough food for 2 meals. However, I doubt that most people are content to pay $20 - $24 for a plate of Mexican food. I don't think their business model is sustainable. Given the robustly sized portions, it would be a good value (I believe) if only their food tasted good. Unfortunately, everything that I've eaten there is tasted so-so to mediocre. I was very disappointed with the preparation and taste of their chili rellenos. Even their crispy tacos were unremarkable. There's always the usual heaping portion of refried beans and ubiquitous mountain of reddish rice, both fulfilling their role in making the plated food appear voluminous; designed to impress. But the food is bland, uncreative, and primarily comprised of low cost components (such as large quantities of iceberg lettuce, beans and rice). The food quality is not much better than that of most of the other local Mexican restaurants. I also tasted several of the menu items that my family ordered, and was disappointed with every one of the dishes. I won't be purchasing their food again, but I sincerely wish the owners blessings and good luck.

We ended up here for breakfast because of the coupon provided to us when we checked into the hotel…read morenext door (strong move). It was an interesting place and had a very local feel but the food was nothing to write home about. I just recently started ordering biscuits and gravy (previously I had sworn off anyone but my grandma's) and this was exactly what I was trying to avoid. It was floury and pretty tasteless. If I have occasion to be back in Corvallis again, I will partake of some of the downtown cafes instead. Sorry Tommy.

The choice on the vouchers was for a pancake or biscuits and gravy breakfast, 2 eggs and choice of meat. As someone who's allergic to dairy, I can't have either of those. Hashbrowns are way cheaper to make, so I thought maybe they'd make an exception. Nope. I got two eggs, nitrate laden bacon, and that was it. Having double the vouchers didn't even matter. I left a small tip, but dang, if only they'd been more accommodating, I'd have been pretty generous. I won't come back, food was totally meh and regular prices were fairly obscene ($5 for a drink!). Even if I stay at the hotel again I'll save the tip $ and bring my own food. What a missed opportunity for Tommy's. If it had been a nicer experience I would have been much more open minded about returning and recommending them.
