Tray B, salmon sashimi and chicken teri don
    Stephanie M.

We ordered party tray B, large salmon sashimi and the chicken teriyaki don. We called in our order and the food was ready within 15 minutes The party tray B is large for the price of $46.50 for 43 pieces is quite affordable as it was able to feed 6 of us with leftovers. The rolls didn't fall apart and luckily they weren't too sweet. There's a good mix of raw sushi and cooked ones (good for all ages and demographic) I didn't try the chicken don ($12.75) but i heard it was not bad The salmon sashimi ($17.25) for 8 pieces was nice and fatty. Good representative of salmon sashimi in Vancouver. I would go back and get this again for big groups

Good service! The staff was sweet and the food came out fast! There's not much seating but it makes for a cozy atmosphere in my opinion! Prices were pretty good, definitely worth the portions. We got 4 rolls, all 4 I would order again! My personal favourite was the crazy boy roll.

Arrived at 3:45pm on a Saturday with my date. I'll get the quick notes out of the way: Nice, lowkey little shop that houses 12 seats MAXIMUM. Waitress at the time was friendly and gave us great service! Interior normal with noticeable wear-and-tear on the walls and tables. Now how does the food fair? Read along.. Ordered the following between me and my date: Dragon Roll - $12.95 8pcs Volcano Roll - $12.75 8pcs Rainbow Roll - $14.75 8pcs Crazy Boy Roll - $9.75 8pcs Salmon Combo - $15.50 12pcs All of the special rolls were delicious and EXCELLENTLY priced. Overall quality was high without sacrificing anything else due to economy inflation which unfortunately a lot of restaurants seem to be pivoting costs onto the customers these past few years. VOLCANO ROLL was honestly *not* that special. Basically was sriracha sauce on xalifornia rolls stacked like a mountain. Dragon Roll, Rainbow Roll, and Crazy Boy Roll were all delicious but was also not that special in the sense that it had any wow factor to them. Despite this, they were filling and did what it was suppose to and I can't give any other positive comments beyond that. The entire menu itself was quite short compared to the average sushi restaurant selections. That was my biggest observation. Overall, food was standard fair. Great quality, everything excellently priced, but average across the board. Everything from the interior decoration, service, atmosphere, and table setting were all average. Neither bad but not amazing either. Just in the middle. Verdict: recommend.

Chicken teri donburi, salmon roll, and spicy salmon combo
    Carrie M.

We first came here on a Monday evening, and the very small restaurant was full, so we tried again the next rainy evening. We were successful in getting a table this time. The prices were very reasonable. Even though they were really busy, the service was attentive. I could see them packing a lot of takeout orders. I had the chicken teri donburi and salmon roll. The donburi was a warm rice bowl with chicken and teriyaki sauce. I really enjoyed the flavour and the soft chicken. The salmon roll was very small and simple, but I expected this as it was only $4. My friend had the spicy salmon combo, which she thoroughly enjoyed, and it was a nice portion size.

Came here on a whim after reading searching for 'cheap food near skytrain stations' on reddit. For a college student, I thought the prices were alright; though if I were to come back, I'd come by around lunch for the bento menu! I ordered the Salmon Combo and a Dynamite roll which costed me ~$23, and it came super quick! Like some others have mentioned, there aren't much seating spots, and they filled up right before I got here; they are always busy in the kitchen, either packing to go orders or serving in house. The fish was of great quality for its price! Tasted very fresh and was presented in a high end way. Don't expect too much from the interior; it isn't a trendy sushi place, but I'd consider that one of its benefits: it's an unassuming great neighbourhood sushi spot!

Parking is not anywhere remotely close, be ready to walk. This id a HIDDEN GEN of a sushi spot. It seems like alot of locals grab dinner here as we came on a Wednesday around dinner time and there were easily over 30 take out orders in the hour span we were there. Sashimi portions are gigantic and extremely fresh. Sushi was very very decent for the price. Not a lot of seating indoor so I definitely recommend coming during non peak hours

Been to Sushi Taku for a couple of visits. They're a small, Japanese run neighbourhood sushi spot a few doors down from Classic Chinese Craft Kitchen. The inside is small with 5 tables (fits 15 people). Service is friendly and they came by several times to refill our waters and tea. The menu has a variety of dishes. Bento boxes are only available weekdays (11:30am to 2:30pm). Note: no gluten free soy sauce available and they close for a break between 2:30pm to 3:00pm. Trip #1 - Ebi sunomono ($5.25) - Chicken karage ($7.95) - takes ~10 minutes to prepare but it's worth the wait. Piping hot, crunchy exterior and soft, tender inside. - Beef yaki soba ($12.25) - good portion. - Mango mango roll ($10.50) - sauce added a nice sweetness. - Salmon sashimi ($14.50 for 8) - good portion size, especially for the price. Hard to find cheap salmon sashimi these days. - Negitoro roll ($4.75) - Spicy chopped scallop roll ($5.75) - California roll ($4.50) - standard. Trip #2 - Scallop tataki roll ($11.25) - Negitoro roll ($4.75) - tuna and green onions are oddly not mixed together. Don't love how they're made here. - Oshinko roll ($3.25) - lacked both a crunchy texture and pickled taste. - Deluxe assorted sashimi ($28.95 for 22) - 4 salmon, 4 sockeye salmon, 4 tuna, 3 tako, 3 amaebi, 2 toro and 2 saba. For a "deluxe", would have liked one or two other types of sashimi offered. Best pieces were the saba and toro. I liked the regular salmon (fattier, better bite) over the sockeye salmon. Found the tako watery. - Spicy agedashi tofu ($6.25) - standard. - Sunny roll ($9.95) - Spicy chopped scallop roll ($5.75) Nothing will blow you away at ST but decent value. 3.5 stars.

Small shop with easy parking in front and in the back. Service is super slow (30+min for takeout). They get a lot of phone orders and have limited seating. They ran out of sushi rice by near end of the day. 10/10 Salmon Tataki $10.95 10/10 Pokémon 12.95 10/10 Alaska $9.50 Fish was all fresh and rolls were cheap! (Relative to other places). Was full after but still cannot compare to ayce price. If you are not a bigger eater then this place is worth it for you!

Great neighborhood sushi spot that was very affordable. There was plenty of 2 hour street parking right in front of the restaurant, plus it's right next to the Joyce station so very easy to get to via car or transit. My friend and I came for dinner Tuesday at 6, and there was a short wait of 10-15 minutes. It's a tiny place with just 4 tables, so I can understand why. They do a lot of takeout/delivery, as I saw folks come in constantly to pick up orders. Most of the menu is dedicated to sushi and sashimi, though they have one page with rice and noodle options. They also offer bento boxes for weekday lunches. I hadn't had sushi in a long time, so I was super excited to go ham on the rolls and nigiri. We shared the dragon roll ($11.25), crazy boy ($8.35), and salmon and avocado ($5.50). I also ordered individual nigiri pieces of amaebi, aburi salmon, toro, and chopped scallop. The nigiri was quite affordable and cost somewhere in the $2-3 range per piece. All of the sushi was really good. I love unagi and salmon, so I know I can never go wrong with any rolls with these ingredients. The surprise of the night was the crazy boy roll, which is a deep fried California roll. I haven't had a deep fried roll in years but I loved it here. The roll is dipped in batter and fried, so each piece is hot and has a nice crunch to it. The nigiri was delicious as well. My favorites were the toro and chopped scallop. When it came time to get the check, it was nice to see they split it automatically for us already so we didn't need to ask for split checks. This may not be the most traditional sushi spot, as I believe it's Korean-run and a lot of their rolls have various sauces drizzled on top, but I really enjoyed the food. Plus it was very affordable for sushi... my total for the meal was ~$27! Not bad.

Chicken Teriyaki ($10.75): Yikes! Was it really chicken? Yuck! :(

=== 1. VERDICT/VALUE I'm going to go against the grain of my fellow Yelpers here - perhaps we just got bad takeout? Perhaps a dine-in experience is needed? Either way, I would ask for sauces on the side (less is more) and ahem, avoid the chicken! === 2. FOOD Salmon Sashimi ($13): Eight pieces of salmon sashimi - not eh best value in town, but nicely done! Black Swan Roll ($9.95): So it's a dynamite roll with the avocado on top, constructed with black rice. It tasted the best of the three rolls, but perhaps because it didn't come overwhelmed with extra toppings on top... Taku Roll ($10.50): So it's prawn tempura with imitation crab, cucumber and tuna...with a whole boatload of mysterious crunchy stuff and sauce on top. It would have been fine without that extraneous layer on top...! Volcano Roll ($9.50): A California roll with scallop on top - it would have been good...if they didn't add the layer of tempura bits and sauce all over it. Chicken Teriyaki ($10.75): Was it really chicken? The texture was wrong, and it was like someone took chicken meat, watered down the taste and made it flaky...? The Teri sauce couldn't save this one and we didn't bother eating it - even my toddler (who really only eats chicken) avoided it :( === 3. CONCLUSION I understand the aspect of artistry that could be present in cooking and how everyone has differing tastes. However, IMHO, less is more, and simplicity is elegant - I think I would have appreciated the seafood and rice much more so without the copious toppings and sauce - I could then actually taste the seafood. If I were to go back, it would include requests to leave the toppings aside...and avoidance of the chicken!

Excellent quality sushi spot in an outskirt of vancouver. Fish pieces are large, menu selection is unique, and prices are value focused. I believe the establishment is owned and operated by Koreans, which is very common for japanese restaurants in north america. Service was fast and kind. Would definitely come back again.

Since we have always going to our staple Japanese restaurants we decided to try something new and gave Sushi Taku a shot! The we ordered the toro nigiri, chopped scallop nigiri, Collingwood roll, and taku combo. My favourite of them are the chopped scallop nigiri! They were generous with their chopped scallops and they were big and plump - loved every single bite of it!! I would probably skip the aburi next time that was in the Taku combo. I found the aburi a bit too overcooked and it ended up too dry and tasted more like a piece of cooked fish on top of sushi rice. Overall with the rest of the food we ordered it is a decent place to mark for a quick sushi stop!

I second another reviewer's comment that Sushi Taku serves the best Japanese in the area. Good prices and quality go hand in hand here, which is so hard to find nowadays anywhere! We ordered two party trays (both same so only one shown), some specialty rolls, a seafood "pizza" and some tempura. All are good. Will come back to dine-in next time ^_^

I always order beef tongue, Japanese fried chicken, and shrimp mayonnaise. These are my must-orders and their signature dishes. The beef tongue is actually quite simple; it's delicious just from being lightly heated. The hot stone slab is served piping hot, perfect for searing meat. Be quick, or it will cool down. The Japanese fried chicken is tender, juicy, and incredibly fragrant. The seasoning is just right. The shrimp mayonnaise is plentiful and a perfect match for beer. The two seasonal or specialty dishes of the day weren't as good, and I wouldn't order them again. My advice is to order their most popular and classic dishes, and definitely make a reservation in advance if you want to come (especially on weekends, as the wait can be up to an hour).

Japanese cuisine demands high standards for ingredients and details, and Kingyo excelled in both taste, ingredients, and presentation. The restaurant's ambiance was also very Japanese--refined yet not overly formal, creating a comfortable and relaxing space. This visit left a very positive impression. The service, food, environment, and atmosphere all made me feel very comfortable, making it a restaurant I would definitely visit again.

One of the best parts is the ever-changing menu of daily specials alongside the regular menu, so there's always something new to try while still coming back to your favorites. This visit we ordered the shrimp garlic fried rice, Agedashi Nasu, Grilled Squid with Garlic Mayo, and an assortment of sashimi. The shrimp garlic fried rice is an absolute must every time. It's packed with flavor, perfectly seasoned, and somehow manages to be comforting without feeling too heavy. It is a large dish and can easily be shared by 3-4, depending on what else you order. We also love the Agedashi Nasu here with melt-in-your-mouth eggplant wrapped in a light, delicate coating that soaks up the savory broth. Service is always quick and organized, even when the restaurant is busy. Dishes arrive as they're ready, making it easy to share everything around the table, which is exactly how an izakaya experience should feel. If it's your first visit, don't skip the shrimp garlic fried rice, and make sure to check out the daily specials before ordering. But in other parts of the world the meal is what's important and so is a quick turn around. Guu with Garlic reminded me a lot of the Izakaya restaurants I found under the train lines of Tokyo in many ways, including the amount of time it felt right to stay. The food came out quick, the servers took orders quicker, and the alcohol came out chilled and as nice contrast to the hot food. Looking around and you see the hand written menu on blackboard surfaces on the walls and this feeling of authenticity. The heat of the flames from the kitchen can be felt and seen if you sit at the bar. And the flavors just hit all the right notes. Starting with appetizers, a section izakayas shine at, the first dish we got was their scallop and mayo pizza. With a crispy crunch on the bottom and crust, this reminds you of the flavors of a baked volcano roll or scallop roll you can find in almost any North American sushi restaurant. Just like that dish, it's important to eat it while it's still hot so it doesn't get gross and 느끼 에. Then came the yellowtail tuna "tempura" pieces. Thick pieces of yellowtail tuna flash fried for just the right crisp on the outside with slight pink of the fish inside. It is meaty without being oily or fatty. Great bite. The beef tongue after was interesting. From the color of the sauce it accompanies it you would think it would be heavy in flavor but it is actually light and citrusy. A good cut into the richer tones of the beef tongue. The yaki udon was one of the best I ever had. It was smokey without being overpowering. The beef was thin and tender and balanced well with the mushrooms it also came with. The udon noodles stayed bouncy and chewy which I didn't expect from being grilled. Very tasty and highly recommend this dish. For our final bite we shared a hot stone bowl of their pork and cabbage rice. With the hot stone bowl constantly cooking even after this dish arrived it was imperative to stir the ingredients together constantly for the first two minutes. It allowed for the runny egg to meld with the rice and the crispy texture of some ingredients was a nice bonus. All in all, I loved eating here and if my appetite was bigger I would've tried more on their menu. A solid place to eat with a great atmosphere, if you're looking for delicious food that won't take too much of your time but still lingers in your memories you have to check out Guu with Garlic.

I made reservations about 4 months in advance. Upon arrival, one of the hostesses opened the door for us, and asked us to wait in a very ornate waiting area. We only waited a couple of minutes before another hostess seated us at the main seating area. The space is very dark, and only lit with candles while the rest of the diners trickled in. During that time they take drink orders, which is limited to sake, wine, beer and a few non-alcoholic drinks. Of note, they don't provide a drink menu, so we were a little surprised by the cost - the yuzu sake and the plum wine were $30 each. My non-alcoholic drink was $12, but a fair size. The theatrical portion started a few minutes later than the official start time - closer to 6pm. The shades lifted, the lights turned on, and the chefs introduced themselves. And from that moment on, they immediately went to work preparing our meal. They operate like clockwork to show the ingredients whole to the diners, and then preparing them, and serving them. Soon as the one dish was completed by all the diners, the next round came shortly after. Over 20+ dishes, there was very little wait time in between each. Each time a dish was served, a hostess was there to describe the dish and provided tips on how best to eat it. The food was overall was very good. I thought a few items were very average, most of them were very good, and a select few were truly outstanding. Most of the ingredients are imported from Japan, so I would imagine that it's part of the reason it's so expensive. This is definitely a splurge meal. I think half the diners at our sitting was celebrating a birthday. On the most part, the food is very good, watching the chefs at work is part of the entertainment, and the service is excellent. Okeya Kyujiro is a Michelin one-star theatrical omakase restaurant, and when they say theatrical, they mean it! From the moment you're welcomed by smiling ushers in kimono to the closing tea ceremony, every movement feels intentional, precise, and elevated. The ambiance is serene and anticipatory. At the start, guests sit in silence as a black screen conceals the chefs. You see their shadows moving behind it. A bell rings, the screen lifts, and the performance begins. Dinner is a 25+ course experience priced at $325 per person. It's undeniably a splurge, but for a milestone celebration, it feels justified. The menu is seafood-forward, with many ingredients flown in from Japan. Each ingredient is presented before preparation, then carefully assembled and served directly from chef to guest. Courses arrive one by one, never rushed. The service team moves seamlessly in the background, refilling water and attending to drinks (available as an add-on) without disrupting the flow. The finale is a matcha ceremony, whisked in front of you with the same quiet precision that defines the evening. When the final sip is taken, the bell chimes once more, the chefs and staff bow, and the screens close. It was a beautifully choreographed dining experience, perfect for marking a special moment, and one I'd gladly return to for the next celebration.

People who haven't been to an izakaya may think it's loud and noisy, but the point of izakayas is they're supposed to be vibrant, high energy, and filled with cheerful chatter. Think of a tapas-style pub/bar for people to unwind and gather to chat after a long day at work. I loved the atmosphere, as it's casual, entertaining, and lively. The food was great and I couldn't think of a dish I didn't like. The sashimi were so fresh and high quality. Of course they use freshly grated wasabi too. The hanger steak was cooked perfectly and super tender and flavorful. The saba mackerel is grilled to perfection and reminds me of the ones I ate in Japan. I'm not a big fan of bonito but the yaki udon was so tasty, I still ate it with the bonito flakes on top! I would love to come back or go to their Toronto (closer to me) location next!

I came here for dinner on a weeknight with two foodie friends of mine. Said friends lived in Japan…read morefor over a decade and they've dined here often in the past, saying it's very "authentic" Izakaya and it reminds them of their past life in Japan (which they miss a lot). Me, I know nothing about Izakaya or what is or isn't authentic Japanese cuisine, so this review is coming from someone with zero knowledge or expectation of any specific foods or experiences. Despite it being a weeknight, the place was packed. It was good that we had a reservation. There was a couple in line before me and they were walk-ins, and there were no available seats for them. I noted how small this place was, and crowded, with the tables close together and a long bar with a counter and barstools there (also close together). Our reserved table was right by the front door - literally, - so every time the door opened, we got a gust of cold air (and it was a cold February night when we were there). I kept my coat on. Truth be known, I was not very comfortable. Also, it was loud. Very loud. I like how the staff shout Japanese greetings to diners whenever they enter but between the frequent shouts and the sheer volume of chatter from all the diners, all sitting close together in close proximity, it was kinda hard to hear what my friends were saying during our dinner. That said, the environment was super vibrant and, again, my friends said this was very typical of an Izakaya in Japan. Food-wise, I have no idea what my friends ordered. The menu was primarily available by way of a QR code and I had no idea what the dishes were, so I deferred to my friends' knowledge. But I can attest that all the dishes were DELICIOUS. We had some sort of Japanese street food "pancakes" (they were wonderful). We had some sort of stirfry beef with noodles (amazing). We had two types of sashimi (omg both were so fresh and so so good!). We had a few other dishes that I can't recall, but I remember I loved them. So.... the food here was GREAT. Service was also attentive which I hadn't expected, being as busy as the restaurant was. I really liked this place but I'll probably go back in the summertime when the weather is nicer as I was cold there, and I'd dine at an off-time, when the volume wasn't so loud. (I'm too old for the loudness!).
