I didn't know there is a Sushi Modo in my area until recently. Sushi Modo is a chain and they have several locations. This is one of those restaurants that I am constantly getting mixed up with Sushi Mura. Anyways, my fav go to is their lunch combos. For $27 I got their sushi and sashimi lunch combo. That came with Sushi, sashimi, tempura, spicy salmon roll, Korean style gyoza, green salad, sunomono salad and miso soup. Portion size was pretty good for the price. B got the spicy salamon roll, spicy salmon crunch roll and the unagi roll. He said the spicy salmon crunch roll was spectacular delicious. We both enjoyed our food. Service was great. The restaurant was ok. We went during Sunday lunch time and it wasn't that busy at all. The decor of the place was ok as well. It is nothing fancy looking. Just a typical sushi restaurant that may need some renovations in the near future. There are plenty of street parking in the hood. read more

Saw recommendations on Yelp for Oshi Sushi, Osaka pressed style sushi. Location is at the corner of the street. Next to busy parkour gymnastics location. So little bit harder to park on street during busy time. Service was fast. Menu is pretty straightforward with reasonable price. Tried their popular Oshi Sushi - Salmon and Hotate Scallop. Came to eat dinner with my wife and mom. Friendly Greeting by one of the servers as we entered and immediately seated. Given tea to drink and menus. After looking at the menu I ordered to share with my mom assorted shashimi, favorite combo, an ebi suninomo, chicken karaage. Wifey got garlic unagi oshi, salmon flower, a tamago/Inari nigiri and black codfish. Everything was tasty and prepared nicely. Real leaves were used to decorate the plate of sashimi. The suninomo was garnished with Parsely which I don't think really goes with the flavor profile but you don't need to eat it I guess. Service was good and the servers prompt and attentive. One of my fave places for aburi salmon oshi & great value too! I'd also recommend some of their "special" rolls too, like the Scallop Motoyaki Roll (pretty unique peanut butter saunce, with very nice plating) and Chicken Karaage Roll. Haven't been here for a while, but they seem to have gotten a bit better than before. We ordered the sime-saba ( mackerel ), No 8 roll and salmon/tuna don. The sime-saba was good, with the black pepper giving it a little kick when you pop the sushi into your mouth. The special sauce and the torch add a good balance of flavor, although the black pepper can overpower it, depending on how much there is on top. The No 8 roll was interesting with the torched chopped scallop on top. The unagi and the roll in general was soft/tender ( not in a mushy way ) but the sushi rice was cooked perfectly, the unagi and chopped scallop was fresh. When I was in the washroom, I can hear diners clearly.....ahem I hope I was not too entertaining....noisy. We landed at this joint out of indecision, which seems to be in the middle of nowhere. Exactly what indecision deserves. We arrived around post lunch, this place seems to be occupied by well-tattooed angry millennials. Owned by Koreans, the meal was prepared by Japanese kitchen staff. If they were fronting, difficult job. Food tasted authentically Japanese. Nice. Every plate was delicious. Thank god I did not foot the bill. So four stars. Had I to pay, maybe three stars as you are paying 30% premium, of prime location prices for nowheresville location and subpar ambience. Would I come again? We ordered some take out from this restaurant after seeing good reviews and although we weren't blown away, food was tasty but prices are a bit higher than average. We went for a few special rolls including their volcano roll with negitoro and seared tuna (didnt taste much negi), sakura roll which was california with some mango and topped with salmon and avocado (my favourite because it had a nice burst of sweetness with the mango) as well as their Captain Crunch Roll which had tempura with some spicy salmon and yam flakes (nothing special). All of their special rolls had a little more rice than I prefer but did not eat too heavy being lighter handed with the sauce. The chopped scallop roll did not have much scallop making it a bit disappointing but their salmon flower aburi was really tasty with very buttery seared salmon wrapping a tiny bit of rice and chopped scallop. Onto their hot foods, the nabeyaki udon is pricey but full of chicken, egg, seafood, veggies and of course, noodles! It was very tasty and hearty. The biggest disappointment is their soft shell crab which was very small for the portion. At the very least, they included a side salad! Overall, prices are a bit high for average food but there were not complaints and we had a tasty meal! read more

After reading the positive reviews, I wanted to love this place. It has been on my list to try for a while and I finally get to do it. As I came after the lunch hour, I was the only diner. Service was quite dismal. There were 2-3 servers but they were more focused on each other than the customer. Overzealous in wanting to clear the plate when I was still eating, yet not noticing the tea cup needs topping up. I had to ask twice for more tea. Food wise, it was tasty. There were bits of bones in the black cod though. It could be due to the cut. So be careful when eating this dish. The house roll had only 5 pieces. A bit on the small side when compared to other places. Decent. Overall the food was nice, though smaller portion and higher pricing. I think there are probably other places with similar quality and with better service. Probably not a place I will return to. read more

A Friday evening in the Burnaby area led to dinner at Sushi Modo. To be honest, I haven't heard too much about this place before, but I saw that it had pretty good reviews on Yelp. First thing I noticed was that there is limited parking in the storefront (but has parking in the back), and even within 1 hour of closing, there were still many tables going in for dine-in. Due to COVID protocols, they had checked our vaccine passports. We decided to order the mentaiko cream udon ($14.50), Barley Hamachi Oshi ($14), and King Aburi Combo ($36). The udon was very creamy and coated with a thick sauce, but there wasn't that much mentaiko in the dish which led to the lack of mentaiko texture and flavours. The hamachi oshi was quite delicious! It was perfectly seared, and the green onion garnish evened out the taste. Lastly, the king aburi combo was quite delicious although it took awhile for it to come (so that some of the pieces had cooled down after being torched). My favourite was definitely the toro and scallop -- you could definitely taste the partially cooked taste! The scallop was still juicy even after being torched. My least favouite was the salmon, as it seemed to be a bit overcooked and almost tasted like pan-fried salmon. Overall, I would definitely return to this place again to try their other sushi items. I probably would not get the mentaiko udon again though. read more

Wow the salmon oshi sushi - what more is there to say! It was very similar to some of the more high end oshi sushi places in Vancouver but for a fraction of the price ($13). We haven't gone for sushi in awhile so after squash, we decided to check out Sushi Modo. They're next door to Amorosa Pasta House and Dahlak Restaurant. We dropped in on an early Saturday (around 4:30pm) and there was surprisingly people inside. Service is mediocre as they only refilled our teas once and it took forever to pay (even though I was standing right by the cash till). The menu is huge with appetizers, salad, tempura, noodle and soup, hot pot, entrée, rice don, sushi don, sashimi, nigiri, aburi, sushi combinations, maki sushi & roll and special rolls. There's a lunch special bento (only available till 3:00pm). - Spicy agedashi tofu ($5.50) - deep fried tofu with spicy sauce. Not sure where the spicy part comes in. This wasn't very memorable. - Spicy chicken karaage ($6.95) - deep fried boneless chicken. This was the better of the two appetizers. - Tamago and inari nigiri ($1.50 each) - always order a tamago as my benchmark. Texture was okay but nothing stood out in my mind. - Alfa tuna oshi sushi ($12.00 for 6) - spicy special sauce, alfalfa and green onion. Good sear to the tuna but the special sauce was oddly salty. - Negitoro roll ($4.50) - looked good but I didn't love the rice. - Spicy chopped scallop roll ($5.50) - don't get it spicy. Couldn't taste the scallop. - Red devil roll ($14.00 for 8) - spicy real crab and avocado topped with smoked salmon, chopped scallop and tobiko. B said this was terrible and found the rice wet. Only thing enjoyed was the smoked salmon. Not much else to say about SM other than it's another average sushi spot. read more

I loved this place! The service was great and the food was terrific. The presentation and flavour was there and the pricing was pretty decent. The salmon and beef oishi were very good and the ebi sunonomo and Gupta were tasty as well. I forgot to take a picture of the beef short ribs (Kalbi) and they were pretty good but they were a bit on the pricey side for $24 for the amount you got. I'll definitely be back! read more

Saw some amazing sushi photos from this place so I had to try (it was also a good location for my friend and I to meet up!) Their salmon oishi was perfectly seared. You can hear the chef making the oishi non-stop so you know it's popular! I came on a weekday, so it wasnt too busy. There were more people coming in for takeout. Service was really good but the portion sizes/prices were ridiculous. I paid $18 for 6 slices of tako (octopus) sashimi and I swear it was cut with a sandwich meat slicer. I have never seen slices so thin.... I could almost see through it. I had my late birthday dinner here and so happy to have chef's aburi sushi set. Maybe next time I will order ×2 What I like here is thin wider and longer fish and less amount rice. Not only fish taste but I focus the texture in the mouth: how easy break down in your mouth. It was perfect for me. On the aburi sushi set, there are 6 different sushi and all have different sauces. They will give you individual kinran(why?) soy sauce pack but you might not need it for this. I remember yuzu&black pepper, honey white miso? and hot chili oil. Sorry I don't remember others. Those three sauce were very impressive. I wish they provideed us bigger size of tempura sauce dish. Yum tempura was three times bigger than sauce dish and there was no point to dip. Please consider Japanese don't pour tempura sauce over the food. If they added ginger for age dashi tofu dish and grated daikon for tempura sauce, the quality will be really good. This is my favourite spot for sushi in Burnaby. The price here is on the high end compared to other restaurants in Burnaby but the food is definitely worth it. My go-to here is the Chef Aburi Platter which includes 6 pieces of premium nigiri for $16 (flame seared salmon toro, scallop, tuna, ebi, etc). Each piece has its very special flavour and they are all so good. Definitely worth every penny! I also tried their oshi (pressed sushi) in the past like salmon and saba, they were pretty good as well. In addition, they have some korean dishes like spicy seafood tofu soup or galbi that you can order. I also live their appetizer selection, many dishes to choose from. Sushi Modo is honestly a hidden gem in Burnaby! There are literally so many sushi competitors in Burnaby and the Lower Mainland but this is more than just your typical sushi joint! I was just craving some sushi and randomly landed on this restaurant as it's on the way to my next designation. My veggie sushi was better than average, but what stood out was the veggie gyoza. Sushi Modo has definitely honed their craft on oshi/aburi specialization. My husband and I came on a busy friday night where covid-19 restrictions are still in place so we waited ~25 minutes for our table. They're using approx less than 50% of their tables so expect a wait if you're going during covid restrictions. Sushi Modo is situated in a rougher part of town and their parking lot is in the back where you'll need to access it via the alley and then walk through a slice of empty lot space to get to the front of the business. It's a bit dark if you're going after the sun set so try to walk in a group. We ordered quite a bit for two people - a AAA tenderloin beef oshi, a garlic unagi oshi, the aburi combo set, don ko chi ramen, and an appetizer sashimi. The oshis came out quickly and it was apparent why their ratings online are so high. The oshis were fresh, visually appealing, and very tasty. It's definitely comparable to other oshi specializing establishments that we've tried and we would easily rate it as one of the best we've had so far. We were definitely not expecting much from the don ko chi ramen but we were equally surprised by how tasty the pork bone broth was. Think white gamjatang base with ramen. The only reason we dropped half a star to one star was due to a small miscalculation from the staff of how long our aburi combo would take in comparison to the rest of our order. The restaurant was BUSY with takeouts and dine-ins. We relatively expected the aburi combo would take a bit longer than the rest of our food but the staff severely miscalculated the wait time and so our oshis, ramen, and sashimi came out extremely fast. We then waited another 20-30 minutes without any food on our table for our aburi combo. It was obvious the restaurant staff felt a bit pressured by our table and we felt the same with the amount of people waiting outside the restaurant in the cold for a table. But the aburi combo finally came and it was amazing just like the oshis we ordered. Regardless, the oshis and aburis were top-notch and I highly recommend them. The sushi scene in Burnaby is definitely stepping up and I still have a few places to check out but Sushi Modo has been my go too since I've eaten there. (Been there atleast 4 times since!) It's just such a refresher as I live in South Burnaby and Sushi Garden was literally the only place I went too. Their menu is extensive and also has some Korean food if you're feeling some super hot dishes as well so a good mix! They also have special rolls that I highly recommend and their service is very good. I never care about services in an Asian establishment but they were attentive. read more

Wow !! This placed really amazed me. It's definitely A hidden gem. It sits on the corner of a main road so when I first approached it I had no idea where to park. I hit the set of lights right in front of the restaurant and went straight down that road for parking. It's not much of a walk, but I have yet to find real parking when I come back . Coming across this joint randomly, it didn't even cross my mind what the menu would consist of (I was hangry and it was the closest place I could find). I'm a really big fan of Oshi and usually restaurants only have three to four different kinds but here ? There were at least 7 or 8. Tried the yellowtail and Alfa tuna and they were mouth watering. If I were able to handle any more I probably would've ordered every single one. I will definitely be coming back here with a group to try other menu items. read more
