Meeting up with a friend in Coquitlam and this is their go to sushi place so met there. It is not a large establishment with limited seating and appears family run. We ordered two sushi combos. They came out pretty quick. The taste and presentation of all the sushi was ok but loved the colour of the salmon and tuna when plated. It was good value sushi. A standard mom and pop Korean owned sushi shop. 4.5 yelp stars enticed me to dine there. Coquitlam has good access to fresh seafood so my expectation was high. Ordered a variety of things including a few rolls, sashimi deluxe, aburi sushi's and others for takeout. First of all, charging 25cents for a plastic bag needed to take out my 130$ order is nickel and dining to the extreme. On to the food... the sashimi deluxe was a disappointment. It looked great but the pieces were very standard and they gave us 3 pieces of cooked shrimp. Really?. This little hidden gem was well hidden. For such a small shop, it was really popular. We had arrived around 1PM. Ordered and found that throughout the hour that we were there eating, customers kept coming in. With only 1 waitress at the time, service was obviously a bit lacking. Not going to hold that against them. The food: They have the typical Japanese fare. But they also included a fusion items like Korean fried chicken and fusion arancinis (rice balls). Being a Korean run Japanese restaurant, it was good. It was a bit more expensive then Sushi Town but with quite a extensive menu and variety there was something for everyone. We came to this restaurant per our friend's recommendation. The food prices were very reasonable and food was fine. I had rainbow roll ($9.50) and deep fried rice balls ($5.95). My partner had combination dinner A which came with 2 shrimp tempura, chicken teriyaki yakisoba, and 3 nigiri ( salmon, tuna, ebi), and miso soup ($14.95). The setting was pleasant and comfortable. I find many Japanese restaurants are owned by Korean, and this place as well. They had many varieties of sushi rolls in the menu, but I didn't see much choice of fish. Neat little sushi place tucked away in a sleepy neighbourhood in Coquitlam. I'd definitely miss it if I didn't look for it online. Service was prompt and we were seated quickly. Clear menus and easy to make selections. Clear interior that isn't overly cluttered. We ordered a Dinner For 2 combo, and a sleeve of Asahi on special. The food here is very tasty. The salad greens and fish are very fresh, and the chicken udon is flavorful and not overly salty like other places. Portion size was OK, for the price I expected a bit more. I was disappointed with how small the shrimp tempura came out to be. The Asahi on tap was excellent though - unbeatable price for imported Japanese beer. Our (senior couple and daughter) recent lunch at Sushi Karis was a first-time visit, and in honour of Mom's birthday. It was fun, the food and service good - overall, a much-enjoyed dining experience and start to celebrating my lady's big event!! I found the quite small in size restaurant to be bright & cheery, very clean and neat, and quiet (music was playing, but volume was always kept low - the way we like it!) -- very pleasant surroundings/ambiance. Seating there includes both tables (on one side of the restaurant these could be moved about to accommodate a larger group), and booths - we chose a booth, which was a perfect size for the three of us. And not to be missed, the small, and so cute "boutique" bathroom! Service to our table was very friendly and accommodating - we ordered a few appetizers first, and then the remaining dishes about half-way through these starters. The way we like to order, and it worked perfectly. What we ordered: - appetizers: agedashi tofu, tako yaki, assorted tempura (8 pieces - prawn, yam, squash, broccoli), and prawn tempura (6 pieces) served with the other dishes. These are some frequently ordered favourites of ours, and although these were not 'the' best we've tasted, I would find it difficult to find very much to fault their offerings - we enjoyed them all. - sashimi: assorted sashimi (10 pieces - sockeye salmon, other salmon, tuna, octopus, squid). A very nice layout of sashimi, and everything very fresh and tasty. And at the price, a real winner!! - rolls: BC roll (bbq salmon, cucumber, with teryaki sauce on top), crunch roll (prawn tempura, crab meat, cucumber, avocado, with crispy tempura crumbs). We thought the tempura crumbs on the crunch roll were a touch greasy, but I, and the others sure enjoyed and found some of the new-to-us tastes on both rolls to be interesting. - dessert: in honour of my lady's birthday, the chef prepared a small sushi cake -- sweet sushi rice, with some crab inside, and the entire top covered with small pieces of sockeye salmon -- very pretty, and so delicious!!! We enjoyed this dining experience at Sushi Karis -- ambiance was much to our liking, food was very decently-prepared and presented, and the service perfect to our needs. I don't know if it's because I ordered close to closing but it was the most disgusting sushi I have ever had in my life. The fish was so fishy to the point where I'm pretty sure it was gone bad. Pricing was reasonable, serving size was standard and the server was attentive. The fried dishes were good, sashimi wasn't bad, but the rice wasn't the best (the difference between Korean sushi and Japanese sushi). Yum - I love love love this place. It's become my go-to sushi joint since moving to Coquitlam. Prices are super reasonable, including the fancier ones. My go to is the crazy girl roll - it's the perfect combo of crunchy from the deep-fried and gooey from the cream cheese. Or more basics like their salmon avocado roll - tastes fresh and delicious. I can order takeout or eat-in and quality is always great. And of course miso soup, which as the weather gets colder, is a delicious way to warm up! The atmosphere is cheery, and the staff are friendly. If you sit in, they will fill up your water or tea non-stop, excellent service. I hadn't been to Sushi Karis for about two years - but I was out and about with a sushi-fiend friend, and we were already parked nearby, so it was suggested we give it a shot. I knew it had changed owners a few times since I last visited, but I still had to be dragged in, as my last experience at Sushi Karis ended in gastrointestinal distress I wasn't keen on repeating- but I figured if it was still sketch, I'd stick to edamame and tofu. When we opened the door- it was packed. Standing room only. Every table was filled, the waitress was pretty much jogging, and the chefs were rolling sushi at double speed. The interior had been updated nicely, and my friend and I were offered green tea while we waited - which is a HUGE service plus in my book. If you didn't want a hot drink, they had unlimited iced lemon water on tap. We squeezed into two tiny chairs around an even tinier table, and got our menus. Everything was updated beautifully, and while they had many traditional rolls and sashimi, the menu was not overly bloated with hundreds of rolls- it was concise, and that always gives me hope for a restaurant's quality- a true sign of a self-aware chef. Despite the limited menu, Sushi Karis still managed to offer a few really unique items- like stuffed, deep-fried avocado. Now, I freaking love an avocado, so I had to order one of these. I ordered two house rolls, and my friend ordered a variety of sashimi. Right out of the blue, the waitress presented us with two lightly seared tuna cheeks to apologize for the wait, along with our miso soup. I was really surprised and pleased with the service again, this kind of customer focus is very rare. Despite how busy the restaurant was, our order came very fast and it was just beautiful. The presentation and quality of the rolls was definitely visible- I was very impressed. I rarely take pictures of my meals, if ever - but I had to snap a few of my Sushi Karis plates- they were that gorgeous. The deep-fried avocado was incredible, but towards the middle, I found it was a bit over-floured, and it had a few pockets of raw dough between the crisp outer layer and the avocado. I called the waitress over, and she apologized and said she would take it off my bill. She asked if I wanted another one, but I declined - but to my surprise (AGAIN) she assured me it would be off my bill regardless of whether or not I wanted a replacement avocado. Very, very impressive service. We finished our meal, enjoyed every bite, and left extremely pleased with our lunch. The bill was much lower than I expected for the quality of food, so I tipped enough to cover the price of the avocado plus 15%, and I don't normally do that, either. The two chefs and the waitress thanked us as we left, as they did with each and every customer. Wonderful. Since my initial return to Sushi Karis a month ago, I've been back four times to eat. Food quality has been the same across the board, with every order, there have been no disappointments. No chipped plates, gorgeous presentation, no haphazard rolls, attentive and speedy service. I really thought Sushi Karis couldn't do any better- but a week ago, I decided to call in an order for pickup when I was across the street at Rona. Despite being told it would take 30 minutes, I arrived ten minutes after my call to find my food already packed up and ready to go. This is how you run a restaurant- hands down. Customer service that doesn't just satisfy, but astonishes - speed and quality when preparing food, and an atmosphere of competence. The new owners of Sushi Karis have definitely put in hard work to make this place not only good, but outstanding. Sushi Karis is now on the level of Tatsu (on Commercial Drive, Vancouver) and I would absolutely consider it the best sushi restaurant in Coquitlam at this point- and possibly the best even beyond Coquitlam's borders. My friend told me he drove out from Abbotsford to have a business meeting in Sushi Karis- no one does something like that unless the restaurant has made a deeply positive impact - which Sushi Karis has clearly accomplished. 5/5 stars, I would definitely recommend visiting Sushi Karis. It's been here for years and the food and service are consistent. Whenever I feel like sushi, I think of this place. I just moved to the area and I was looking for a nearby sushi place. I found this place by just driving around. It's really small and tables are limited. I went around 6 and of course all the tables were almost full. It was clean so I didn't mind the small size. There was only one waitress working and the small restaurant was packed so it took a while to get a menu. Everyone around us looked like they were waiting for their orders as well. The menu was decent and fairly priced. I ordered an ebi sunomono and the assorted sashimi plate. The ebi sunomono was amazing - the best I've tried to date. It was a large bowl with a lot of shrimp and the noodles were perfect. The assorted sashimi was decent. I was impressed by the variety but the tuna was a little frozen in the middle. I was pleased though considering the price. My mom ordered the crunchy roll. The tempura inside was fresh and it was quite a big roll. We waited a while for service but I am willing to go back perhaps when it's not so busy. My new go-to spot for takeout sushi after being continually let down by others in the Austin Heights area. Sushi is always on point without being too heavy on the rice, overly greasy or salty.
