Shio Japanese Kitchen. You know when you enter a Japanese restaurant and no one greets you there is a good chance it is not Japanese. Yup Korean owned and operated. We came here to grab a quick lunch and opted for their lunch specials. Taste wise- it is fairly creative and delicious but seems lack depth. All the nigiris fell apart in transit from plate to mouth. Either they used the wrong rice or they weren't sufficiently compacted. Service is minimal. Like hailing cabs in Vancouver. Ambience was not fantastic, where we sat we are in full view of the clutter of open kitchen design. Overall, the fish on the nigiris were so thinly sliced as if they sliced as thin as humanly possible. Large plating gives the illusion of a "deal". It is an okay. If you must....
Hubby discovered this place close to Coquitlam Center and has been dining here quite often while I was away. Finally tried it and it truly is a great spot for Japanese food with a wide variety of choices, great serving size and good pricing. I usually get their sets as these give you bang for your money and also try different items at the same time. Service is good as well and wait for the food isn't too long. Always worth the drive from Burnaby to dine at Shio Japanese Kitchen.
Fairly priced and amazing option for affordable oshi and good tasting Japanese cuisine in the area.
I got take out here and was quite impressed. The sushi is fresh and seasoned well (but not overly seasoned). Would recommend the scallop sushis and the salmon aburi as well as the California roll salmon aburi.
The food was delicious my issue was the server who wasn't accommodating to our friend who legit had medical dietary restrictions and couldn't eat certain ingredients. The server was not helpful and very rude telling her she couldn't substitute anything. The server made it seem like she was being difficult and even had the nerve to say we will do it for you this time as if she's doing her a favour. I said out loud to our friend if we had known about your food restrictions we wouldn't of come here and I felt the servers death stare right at me. Very disappointed in the service how do they work in food, and not know about food restrictions and allergies?
It's good that you can find a decent Japanese restaurant in Coquitlam. It's actually running by Korean. They open daily except Sunday, so I can only go here and buy and try their food on Saturday as I need to work on weekdays. I ordered their combo A with beef bao bun and simple Oshi. The miso soup came with combo A. It was only ok but nothing was too special about it. I posted a photo of combo A here. You can see it came with some spicy California roll, a beef bao bun, grilled avocado with a special sauce, katsu (deep fried pork cutlet) and some coleslaw salad. I think combo A is a really good deal. It was $16 but it included a wide variety of food in one dish. The simple oshi was a good deal at $18 that included 4 types of oshi sushi. One thing that I would like to specify though about the oshi sushi was too much sauce on a couple of them. The sauce covered the flavour of salmon or sushi. It will be great if the restaurant can improve the quality or portion of sauce that they put on the sushi. Don't overkill the origin of the delicious sushi. If I go to this neighborhood again, I would like to try other dishes. The restaurant is next to Coquitlam Centre, so it's easy to find parking and it's free!
First time visiting this place with other 4 friends and we we're all very happy. The place was very busy for dinner time but we still got seated right away. Staff are friendly and very accommodating with our needs. All foods we've ordered were very good and tasty. Food presentation is very appetizing. Pricing is okay and worth the visit. I highly recommend this place.
A small place just off Glen Drive in Coquitlam. I sat by the counter so was facing the kitchen. Above them is a TV that shows the traditional knives, fish market, etc. It brought back memories of my trip to Japan. I so want to go back to Japan. Anyway, I ordered the Udon Combo. It had udon, rainbow oshi, chicken karaage and gommae with a tuna on top. The sashimi on top of the rainbow oshi was really fresh tasting and delicate, not like some places where the sashimi is a bit hard and flavorless. The chicken karaage was bite size which was good. It was juicy and light, even though it is fried. It wasn't overly oily. The udon was okay as it was plain udon in soup. The soup wasn't overly salty and you don't feel thirsty after. The service was quick and the server was so polite. I didn't wait that long for the food but she thanked me for waiting. The decor was clean and not cluttered, and very open.
I will give it a 3.5 out of 5 After around 20 min wait we got seated. We were really excited to try as we heard such great things about this restaurant. All the aburi sushi were excellent. However, everything else weren't good. The beef cream pasta was really sweet. I expected it to be savory. I've been back to this place recently (June 2021) and I'm glad that the food is still delicious. I found the portions a bit small, but that's only because I can eat a lot. My friend was full after eating only half of her order! I ordered Combo B, which was $16.75 (perhaps a bit on the pricey end), but only because I wanted to try their beef bao bun. The flavour of the bao bun as a whole tasted fresh and meaty, the sauce was creamy and mellow, and the bread was light and fluffy. The grilled avocado was delightful as always and it was perfectly ripe. The salmon fritter was slightly crisp, i.e., not too crunchy, but not soft either, which just happens to be what I prefer. The spicy mayo salmon oshi was delicious. I enjoyed the combination of the cooked salmon and its omega-3 fatty acids combined with the creamy spicy mayo sauce. My friend remarked that the spicy mayo wasn't that spicy―that it didn't really have a kick to it―and I'd have to agree. I can handle my spice, or rather, I enjoy spicy food, but I have come to accept that spicy foods in restaurants are rarely that spicy. I'll have to maintain my 5/5 stance as it's currently my go-to place!
I constantly order takeout from this place via Uber Eats, and it has become one of my favourite places around the area for Japanese food and sushi. The combos are pretty worth it for the variety of food that you get. For example, my favourite udon combo comes with a sesame spinach salad, chicken karaage with mayo, a whole salmon oshi roll, and a half bowl of plain udon. I feel like I get a taste of all my favourites for a reasonable price. I would recommend the Chicken Karaage, the Salmon and Tuna Oshi sushi, and the Udon. The udon broth is super nice- I feel like it has the perfect richness and depth of flavour. Overall I will keep on ordering from here. I can't wait to try more of the menu items.
Probably our favourite japanese restaurant in Coquitlam! They have a large menu of different japanese combo sets, and we got the Katsu burger combo and the udon combo to try this time. The Katsu burger was huge, 2 layers of crispy deep fried chicken cutlet, and cabbage salad coleslaw in between. Served with sweet potato fries and a choice of canned pop as well The udon set was as good as usual~ their dishes are all so neat and yet so simply delicious! The Special BC roll and BBQ ika (squid) was heavenly delicious too~ just love their food all so much
My friend and I decided to get some takeout here since they had a deal for 20% off all their takeout. I decided to get the aburi california roll, salmon avo roll and the chicken karaage rice bowl. The aburi california roll was pretty good but it's just the aburi sauce ontop of a california roll, there's no fish. The salmon avo roll however was really tasty and the salmon was so fresh and paired well with the sweetness of the sushi rice. The karaage bowl was so large and filling and came with rice, a side salad and ontop had wasabi mayo and seaweed flakes. The chicken was so crispy and flavourful and wasn't dry at all. I will definitely return to try more items here when I'm in the area and take advantage of the 20% off takeout discount!
Can't believe the last time I came here was almost 6 years ago! The food is still amazing. I love Aburi so we ordered beef Aburi and simple Aburi set as well as a roll set. We probably over ordered a bit. All the rolls are great. Some of the Aburi rice is a bit loose but the flavor is good. I am happy that they have mini udon on the menu. It's like they know what kids like. I love all the Ghibli posters as decor. It's a fun and inviting place for family and friends. read more
Arrived just before 1pm and it was still quite busy. The space is clean and we were seated right away. The menu is filled with pictures which is great! They just implemented a new takeout menu for a quick reasonable lunch if you're in the area. We ordered: Donkatsu $17 Deluxe negiri and beef udon $25 The pork katsu was well seasoned and juicy for such a lean cut of meat. It comes with miso soup, shredded cabbage and rice The sauce wasn't the typical tonkatsu sauce but a more mild version of it. I think it was well priced for the amount of food. The Deluxe nigiri came with 7 different pieces of fish, including squid and ebi. 2 shrimp tempura and a vegetable one. The beef udon broth was flavourful with a soothing mix of dashi and beef. We were very full after all of the food and the service was good. The only negative is probably the parking. Pay parking around the area or maybe park at the mall and walk over. Fat tuna oshi is a must order for us every visit! Also fans of the karaage and aburi salmon rice ball (the one that comes with donkotsu combo) They have a happy hour before 5:30pm Mon-Thurs for certain combos! Servers are usually friendly but we've had experiences where they come off a bit cold... though it's not too bad because I still find myself frequenting Shio a couple times a year. read more

This is quickly becoming one of my all time favourite sushi restaurants. It is a little higher in price point, but WORTH IT. The dishes are incredibly refined, and every component of every dish is flavorful and seasoned beautifully. I really enjoy the varied combinations which all come with unique and modern sides, such as the grilled avacado, tuna tataki with a flavorful ponzu sauce with multiple garnishes, and salmon tempura on a bed of almost a pickled coleslaw. Again every thing is seasoned to the 9!! The oshi is also very good, flavorful and saucey like I like it!! :) I also really like aburi California roll. It is only $5 while at a lot of other restaurants the same roll is considered one of the "fancy rolls" and is around $11. The restaurant is beautiful and modern with wooden tables and serving plates, and the service is always pleasant. They are grateful for your business and attentive. I highly recommend a visit. read more

2nd time coming and so happy that I did, seems like the place is under new management +totally new menu. Great trendy music~ Tried the following; Fried Poached Eggs -4/5 worth if u usually don't have poached eggs Creamy Salmon oshi- 5/5 wow! Salmon oshi- 5/5 wowwwwww! Omg! Takoyaki - 4.88/5 could be bigger !!+need flakes Chicken Karage-3.5/5 could be more juice &tender with the mayonnaise is a nice touch tho. Tuna tataki cubes - 4.88/5 nicee fresh cool to the tongue +can be bigger Fried Salmon bars - 5/5 using the pink island dressing was genius wow! Aburi Salmon toro nigiri-4.75/5 -5/5!!! BestB aburi toro nigiri -5/5 wow bit saucy but wow Fois grois nigri-6/5 WOW holy shit if u never had fois gras before this is a must. Good for a quick lunch bite, 3.5/5 stars Service 4/5 - we had to go find our waiter/waitress a couple times Atmosphere 5/5: clean, love interior and their table wares Food: 3.5/5 Fried egg 3.5/5- the egg was delicious but the sauce was too sweet. I had to wipe off some of the sauce to find the perfect balance. The egg was cooked beautifully I can eat 2,3 of the them no problem. Maybe next time I will ask them to have their sauce on the side. Sunomono 3/5 - sunomono is designed to be sweet and have tangy taste in your mouth. But I didn't find the elements in the sunomono that I had. Fried salmon 4/5 - I really enjoyed it, the amount was just right but too much flour. Pork cutlet 3.5/5 - pretty similar to other restaurants The highlights of the lunch were the pressed sushi, and nigiri. I wrote a review on Sooda on their nigiri (the rice falls apart) but for this restaurant It was really delicious and perfect. Their pressed sushi melts in your mouth, very yummy! 5/5. This place has some solid combo and aburi sets!!! Shio newly opened about 4 months ago and I'm so happy to have gotten to try them out for lunch over the Thanksgiving long weekend! They have a such a great lunch combo with the perfect combination of items in the combo! We ordered the combo B and the shio set. The combo B included miso soup, oishi sushi, sunomono, crispy salmon and grilled avocado. Everything in this combo was superb! Hard to choose a favourite but if i had to that batter and tender salmon in the crispy salmon was fantastic! And the grilled avo was an awesome touch that balances out the meal without the guilt! The shio set a set 4 different types of aburi oishi sushi (salmon, ebi, hamichi and saba). It was beautifully decorated and sooo good! Such a great addition to the coquitlam neighborhood! I'm already thinking when my next visit will be! read more
Cute place with simple Service: it was early dinner and only 3 tables, so servers were very attentive Food: we got this oshi combo, 12 pieces for $16! A really good deal! It was quite yummy and I enjoyed having a variety! We also got a roll combo and the portion was not bad! The california aburi roll was surprisingly really good, however the other rolls were nothing special. Would I come back? Yes for the oshi combo because it is a good deal and tastes pretty good! But wouldnt particularly recommend the regular rolls. Our food also came out quite fast probably cause it was slow at the time. Overall enjoyed dining here. Okay 2nd time back. Service was lacking, didnt get menus after sitting for a few minutes, going to the bathroom and coming back, had to ask for them. It wasnt insanely busy either so they mustve forgotten since we were sat at the back. Server took our order, we got our food, one tea refill and thats about it. No check up on food at all. The sushi isnt as good as I remembered. Maybe since ive been to Greenleaf more often, their oshi is much better than shio. I probably wont be coming back in a while. read more

There's a new sushi place in town! Shio Japanese opened its doors recently and my dear parents found some time in our dinner schedule to give it a try! This is located in the same spot as the now-closed Legend Fish. They seem to have renovated a bit, looks nice and clean inside with a woody themed interior. The prices are definitely higher-end but definitely worth the pricing as the sashimi was fresh and good quality. Everything was delicious, I found the Chirashi don ($18) to be a highlight because it was crafted with such care and had Ika! I love me some good Ika and it was definitely the good kind here! The rice they have is also well seasoned and made, nothing was overly salty or inappropriately tangy. The only downer was the wild salmon poke roll ($5.50). Although the little puffed rice added a different texture to the dish, it didn't compliment the roll. We all felt that everything was crafted with care and thought. Even though it IS a bit pricey for the area, we needed a nice Japanese restaurant like this here! So happy they've opened their doors now, hopefully they keep up the quality and good work! The staff were very attentive and friendly, still a bit inexperienced though (server forgot her pen when taking our order so she had to go back to get it). Overall, I'd give Shio a 3.5 stars. Quite a bit restaurant inside and we were lucky to get a spot right away but usually pretty busy. I was really looking forward to it because I've been wanting to try it. My friends and my family said it's decent but it's always closed when I'm free. The food is tasty but not the best I've had in terms of nigiri or oshi. The tempura are well done though. Portion is decent but for the price it's really not that worth it. Quite pricey for what they offer. I've had better, either with price or with quality or with creativity. Staff are friendly but just too busy. They need to hire more people, I feel bad for the waitress that day. Only two for takeouts and dine in. We raised our hands 5 different times and they only saw it after 10mins. Washroom is small and could be cleaner but overall it's not dirty. Not a bad place but just not something I'd go back to again. read more

A friend of mine had told me to try this place a while back , but finally had a chance to do so. Currently , everything is 20 % off because they are doing take out only. They have spots to sit while you wait for your food order. When it is not so busy , a wait time of around 10 minutes. So many delicious combos and rolls ! We got the Katsu combo and the roll combo ( not shown). The Katsu was crisp and not greasy- also held its crunch in a take out box after 20 min while being transported to Lafarge Park to be enjoyed physically distant from good company. My favorite feature of the combo was the deep fried poached egg ( kind of like a scotch egg but minus the meat ). It was sitting in a soy sauce vinegar that was sweet. The combo also came with miso soup, rice and salad. Totally worth it for $11.95! The roll combo had three rolls one being the dynamite roll. Good quality sushi and the combo was $9.95. They have so many items I would definitely come back to try more and would want to dine in when possible. read more

Sushi was tasty and similar to many other good restaurants, I tried house roll and Philadelphia roll and it costed ~$13. The smoked salmon wasn't placed on the roll properly as you see on the picture and the size is smaller than usual. I didn't like their Philadelphia roll Atmosphere is westernized and the table i had was shaking lol. Good customer service read more

I've noticed a lot of new sushi spots open up in Coquitlam lately. I decided to give Shio a try for a family dinner. We went in at around 6pm on a weeknight. We were seated immediately to one of the larger tables on the back of the small restaurant. The restaurant felt very clean and the decor was simple and modern. They have a decent selection on the menu. Also, I should note that the menu seemed more geared towards individual servings rather than ordering to share. Additionally, they have a surprisingly large selection of combo sets available for dinner as well, which they previously only offered for lunch. The sashimi menu is small, with only 3 actual a la carte sashimi options if I recall, as well choices to do a chef's choice assortment. There are also a few tataki dishes too. Overall, the food was pretty good. There is an emphasis on presentation, which is evident in their choice of dish ware. This spot is a little pricier than the average sushi joint in the Coquitlam area though, but if you looking for a little more refined atmosphere, this spot is worth a try. In terms of the specific dishes I tried: *Tuna sashimi and salmon sashimi - Presentation and knife work on the fish looked good. Tasted fresh, but parts of the tuna sashimi had an icy texture. They probably did not give it enough time to thaw. *Oshi combo - The oshi sushi was priced at a fairly low price point compared to others I have tried in the past. The combo came with 4 different kinds of oshi, but it was kind of hard to tell which was which because the creamy sauces were a little overpowering. I also had a lot of issues picking up the pieces without the rice crumbling. *Deluxe nigiri set - lots of variety in the set, which was really nice. The star of the set, the nigiri, was well made and had a good rice to fish ratio. *Assorted tempura - received at mix of prawn, yam, and pumpkin tempura. Enjoyed it, but sometimes found the yam was sliced a little to thin. *King ebi roll - this was one of their special rolls. Presentation was very nice. *Chopped scallop roll - Nothing special and probably the dish that was most lacking in presentation. The roll could have been rolled up more tightly. read more

This is my new favorite restaurant and I regret I didn't come visit sooner. I came here for lunch and ordered the lunch combo. The food was freshly made and delicious. The first bite of aburi california roll reminded me of the aburi I had at Miku. It was awesome. The service was great. My friend ordered the lunch combo that comes with a grilled avacodo that was kinda uuderripe. The server offered to change a new one for her even tho my friend had already ate half of the avacodo. The restaurant was clean and modern. I will definitely return for dinner next time. read more

Delectably delicious delightful delicacy. Nicely balanced taste that awakens all your senses. Oshi set was our favourite. Surprisingly scrumptious set of sushi. Udon was full of flavour. Drank the whole bowl down to the last drop. Sodium overload! Almost artistic, adventurously aromatic, aesthetically affecting, amorously acquainted, atypical amuse-bouches. They are not wrong to expect our repeated attendance. read more
